Abstract:Li-CO 2 batteries offer a promising avenue for converting greenhouse gases into electricity. However, the inherent challenge of direct electrocatalytic reduction of inert CO 2 often results in the formation of Li 2 CO 3 , causing a dip in output voltage and energy efficiency. Our innovative approach involves solid redox mediators, affixed to the cathode via a Cu(II) coordination compound of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid. This technique effectively circumvents the shuttle effect and sluggish kinetics associated with soluble redox mediators. Results show that the electrochemically reduced Cu(I) solid redox mediator efficiently captures CO 2 , facilitating Li 2 C 2 O 4 formation through a dimerization reaction involving a dimeric oxalate intermediate. The Li-CO 2 battery employing the Cu(II) solid redox mediator boasts a higher discharge voltage of 2.8 V, a lower charge potential of 3.7 V, and superior cycling performance over 400 cycles. Simultaneously, the successful development of a Li-CO 2 pouch battery propels metal-CO 2 batteries closer to practical application.

Abstract:The realization of practical aprotic Li-O-2 batteries is hindered by superoxide-related parasitic reactions and high overpotentials. Herein, a heme-based nanozyme containing iron-porphyrin derivative ligands is used as a novel electrolyte additive to scavenge superoxide radicals in the Li-O-2 system. Specially, this type of nanozyme can act as a bifunctional catalyst for both discharge and charge by coordinating with superoxide intermediates, functioning as a molecular shuttle of superoxide species and electrons between cathodes and products. As a consequence, the Li-O-2 batteries exhibit boosted discharge capacity, reduced charge polarization and superior cycling stability in the presence of the nanozyme additive. This first attempt to using nanozyme in Li-O-2 batteries should pave a new way for the sustainable cross-link between biomimetic enzymes and advanced energy storage.

Abstract:Li-O2 batteries have a high theoretical specific energy, 3500 Wh kg-1 ; however, its practical capacity is far below this value and limited by the passivation with the insulating discharge product Li2 O2 . The nonconductive nature of Li2 O2 also impedes the charging process, leading to a low coulombic efficiency and high overpotential on charge even at a moderate rate. To address these challenges, redox mediators could be used both during discharge and charge to transfer electrons between O2 /electrode surface or Li2 O2 /electrode surface to overcome the passivation of Li2 O2 , which would facilitate the discharge and charge process. The capacity and current density were significantly improved using the redox mediators, thus representing a promising strategy to achieve a high energy density for Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:Due to cathode passivation caused by the insulating discharged products and by-products, Li-O-2 batteries sustain some obstacles encompassing poor discharge capacity and high overpotential. Herein, we introduce 6-Ethoxy2,2,4-trimethylquinoline (EQ) as a bifunctional redox mediator into electrolyte and investigate its influence on the electrochemical performance of Li-O-2 batteries. Strikingly, the discharge process is promoted in the solution phase by the solvated Li+ with EQ, and the correlative capacity exhibits more than a 30-fold increase than pristine Li-O-2 battery at the current density of 3000 mA g(-1) carbon. DFT calculations further clarify the working mechanism of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) induced by EQ. Furthermore, the surface electrostatic potential diagram shows that N and O atoms in EQ are electron-rich, which is prone to donate electrons to get its desirable oxidation state and effectively catalyze the oxidation of Li2O2, resulting in the extremely low charge plateau at 3.08 V and longtime stable cyclability (150 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g(-1) carbon with a fixed capacity of 1000 mAh g(-1) carbon).

Abstract:Limited by the energy density and stability of currently developed Li-ion battery, there are eager demands for high energy density of electrochemical energy storage devices. Among various candidates, Li-O2 battery has been recognized as one type of the next generation lithium battery to achieve the energy density goal of 350-500 Wh kg−1 due to its extremely high theoretical energy density. However, there are gaps in terms of achievable energy density, rate-capability and cycling performance with respect to practical applications. One of the main reasons is the sluggish reaction kinetics of oxygen electrochemistry at the cathode caused by the insolubility and insulation of the discharge product Li2O2. Considering the advantage of mobility in Li-O2 battery over general solid catalysts, soluble catalytic redox mediators have been introduced into aprotic Li-O2 battery to facilitate the kinetics of both oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction on the cathode and extensively investigated. In this paper, recent progress on the application of soluble catalytic redox mediators in non-aqueous Li-O2 battery is systematically reviewed with focus on the underpinning chemical and electrochemical reaction mechanisms, after a brief discussion on the electrolyte solvent which plays a crucial role on the battery performance. The challenges and future opportunities of Li-O2 battery containing soluble catalytic redox mediators are also summarized and analyzed in this paper.

Abstract:Anionic redox chemistry is extensively studied by virtue of the promising strategy for appealing to the large capacity in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, stimulating the lattice oxygen activity generally occurs at high voltage suffering from irreversible oxygen release, transition metal ion migration, and even structural distortion, which is a critical limitation for their further application. In this study, a series of Na y Li0.1Cu x Mn0.9– x O2 cathode materials are developed by introducing Cu2+ into the transition metal layer. Theoretical calculations disclosed that the electron agglomeration around the O atom has been enhanced with the increase of Cu content, leading to a strong covalent bonding between Cu and O and contributing to a more stable structure. The local structure facilitates the loss of electrons, thus reducing the O redox potential along the charging process, which is further confirmed by an experimental study. Besides, the Cu substitution introduced a whole solid solution reaction during the charge–discharge process with small volume change, hence greatly improving the cycling performance of NLCMO systems. Our research provides unique insights into the activation mechanism of anionic redox reactions and provides critical guidance in further designing anionic redox-based layered oxide systems.

Abstract:Soluble redox mediators (RMs) are one of the most promising approaches for reducing charging overpotentials in Li–O2 batteries. However, this auspicious strategy still in its infancy and raises new scientific problems needing to be clarified, such as the influence of RMs with different charge–transfer or different molecular structure (same redox functional group) on Li2O2 oxidation behavior. Herein, the realities of Li2O2 oxidation by some RMs, including lithium bromide, tetrathiafulvalene, 2,2,6,6–tetramethyl–1–piperidinyloxy, and 2–azaadamantane–N–oxyl, were investigated using detailed experimental results and first–principles calculations. Among these RMs studied, single electron–reaction RMs exhibited a more stable charging curve at lower potential than that of multiple electron–reaction RMs. Besides, the RM molecular with smaller steric effects and higher electron–donating power exhibited higher catalytic activity thus a lower charging overpotential. These findings offered a guidance direction for subsequent explorations and optimization of high performance RMs, which might further facilitate development for Li–O2 batteries.

Abstract:The application of redox mediators has been considered as a promising strategy to boost the performance of aprotic Li-O 2 batteries.However,the issues brought with redox mediators,especially on the Li anode side have been overlooked.Here,we propose a facile approach of preparing a gel polymer membrane that not only allow uniform Li plating/stripping withlarge current densities over extended cycling but also inhibit the diffusion of redox mediators and avoid redox shuttling,self-discharge,and internal shortcircuiting.More importantly,the gel polymer membrane prevents the penetration of O 2 and superoxide intermediates from the Li anode. Therefore,it ensures the successful application of both lithium anode and redox mediators in Li-O 2 batteries to achieve the desired high capacity and rate performance.Meanwhile,it helps understand the benefit and problems of added redox mediators and reactive oxygen species so that theperformance of such Li-O 2 batteries can be truly evaluated.

Abstract:A nitrogen, sulfur‐containing organic iodide—acetylthiocholine iodide (ATCI) is first proposed as a defense‐donor redox mediator (RM) to simultaneously address the large charge overpotential and unstable Li metal interface issues in Li−O2 batteries. As a result, the ATCI‐containing Li−O2 batteries show excellent performance, with a low charge potential and a prolonged cycle life. Lithium–oxygen batteries (LOBs) suffer from large charge overpotential and unstable Li metal interface, which can be attributed to the inefficient charge transport at the insulating Li2O2/cathode interface and the severe oxygen corrosion issue on the Li anode surface. The use of soluble redox mediators (RMs) can effectively enhance the charge transport between Li2O2 and cathode, thus greatly reducing the charge overpotential. However, oxidized RMs will also shuttle to the anode side and react with the Li metal, which not only results in the loss of both the RMs and the electrical energy efficiency but also exacerbates the Li anode corrosion. Herein, an organic compound—acetylthiocholine iodide (ATCI), in which a big cation group is contained, is proposed as a defense‐donor RM for lithium anode in LOBs to simultaneously address the above issues. During charge, it can accelerate the oxidation kinetics of Li2O2 via its iodide anion redox couple (I−/I3−). Meanwhile, its cation segment (ATC+) can move to the anode surface via electric attraction and in situ forms a protective interfacial layer, which prevents the Li anode from the attack of oxidized RM and oxygen species. Consequently, the ATCI‐containing LOBs can achieve both a low charge potential (≈3.49 V) and a long cycle life (≈190 cycles).

Abstract:In this work, 1-aminopropyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (APMImBr) is introduced in dimethyl sulfoxide-based Li-O2 batteries. The Br- functions as a redox mediator to catalyze the decomposition of the Li2O2 products. Meanwhile, the APMIm+ serves as a scavenging agent for superoxide radicals as well as protects the lithium metal anodes via an in situ formed Li3N-rich solid electrolyte interface layer. As a result, the Li-O2 batteries containing APMImBr delivered an enlarged discharge capacity, a reduced charge overpotential of around 0.61 V and a prolonged cyclic life of over 200 cycles.
