Abstract:A nitrogen, sulfur‐containing organic iodide—acetylthiocholine iodide (ATCI) is first proposed as a defense‐donor redox mediator (RM) to simultaneously address the large charge overpotential and unstable Li metal interface issues in Li−O2 batteries. As a result, the ATCI‐containing Li−O2 batteries show excellent performance, with a low charge potential and a prolonged cycle life. Lithium–oxygen batteries (LOBs) suffer from large charge overpotential and unstable Li metal interface, which can be attributed to the inefficient charge transport at the insulating Li2O2/cathode interface and the severe oxygen corrosion issue on the Li anode surface. The use of soluble redox mediators (RMs) can effectively enhance the charge transport between Li2O2 and cathode, thus greatly reducing the charge overpotential. However, oxidized RMs will also shuttle to the anode side and react with the Li metal, which not only results in the loss of both the RMs and the electrical energy efficiency but also exacerbates the Li anode corrosion. Herein, an organic compound—acetylthiocholine iodide (ATCI), in which a big cation group is contained, is proposed as a defense‐donor RM for lithium anode in LOBs to simultaneously address the above issues. During charge, it can accelerate the oxidation kinetics of Li2O2 via its iodide anion redox couple (I−/I3−). Meanwhile, its cation segment (ATC+) can move to the anode surface via electric attraction and in situ forms a protective interfacial layer, which prevents the Li anode from the attack of oxidized RM and oxygen species. Consequently, the ATCI‐containing LOBs can achieve both a low charge potential (≈3.49 V) and a long cycle life (≈190 cycles).

Stabilizing Li Anodes in I2 Steam to Tackle the Shuttling-Induced Depletion of an Iodide/Triiodide Redox Mediator in Li-O2 Batteries with Suppressed Li Dendrite Growth

Abstract:Redox mediators (RMs) have become a significant point in the now-established Li-O-2 battery system to reduce the charging overpotential in the oxygen evolution process. Nevertheless, a major inherent barrier of the RM is the redox shuttling between the Li metal anode and mobile RM, resulting in the corrosion of Li and depletion of RM. In this study, taking iodide/triiodide as a model RM, we propose an effective strategy by immersing the Li metal anode in I-2 steam to create a 1.5 mu m thick surface protective layer. The resultant ionic conductive LiI layer on the Li metal anode can not only suppress Li dendrite growth but also act as a buffer layer between the RM and bare Li. By combining the iodide/triiodide RM with the LiI protective layer, the Li-O-2 battery shows low and steady charge voltage plateaus of similar to 3.6 V over 70 cycles. Importantly, the symmetrical cell using the LiI-protected Li electrode exhibited small Li plating/stripping overpotentials (similar to 20 mV, 480 h), far superior to that of the bare Li electrode (similar to 70 mV, 300 h). The in situ interfacial observation shows that dendrite growth on the Li metal can be effectively suppressed by optimizing the LiI protective layer.
Simultaneously Generating Redox Mediator and Hybrid SEI for Lithium–oxygen Batteries by Lewis Acid Catalyzed Ring‐opening Reaction of Organic Iodine

Abstract:Facing high overpotential, severe Li corrosion and degradation of electrolytes caused by the reactive oxygen species, the development of lithium-oxygen batteries is seriously limited. Although the iodine species have been considered to be effective redox mediators (RMs) for lowering the charging overpotential, the shuttling of oxidized I3- may attack the Li metal anode, compromising the number of RMs, cycling stability and energy efficiency. Here the intend to introduce 3-Iodooxetane (C3H5OI, IOD) into TEGDME-based electrolyte to form a protective SEI layer on the Li surface for defending against the attack of I3-. However, the iodine in IOD is found difficult to dissociate. To solve this problem, hard Lewis acid, aluminum trichloride (AlCl3) is proposed as the catalytic agent for dissociating the I- and triggering the ring-opening reaction of the detached C3H5O+ ions. The former can dissociate redox couple I3-/I- while the latter can form oligomers or polymers under the attack of a nucleophile. Meanwhile, AlCl3 can form Al2O3 and LiCl inorganic species. Taking together, the introduction of IOD and AlCl3 into electrolytes can effectively derive reduced overpotential and in situ SEI layers consisting of flexible organics and rigid inorganics, endowing lithium-oxygen batteries over 150 cycles with significantly enhanced stability and lifespan. 3-Iodooxetane (IOD) is difficult to dissociate iodine to form redox couple. AlCl3 is added to trigger the ring-opening of IOD to release the detached C3H5O+ ions and the iodine. The former can form oligomers or polymers while the latter can dissociate redox couple I3-/I-. Meanwhile, AlCl3 can form a stable Al2O3 and LiCl-rich SEI layer to stabilize the Li anode.image

Abstract:Soluble redox mediators (RMs) are one of the most promising approaches for reducing charging overpotentials in Li–O2 batteries. However, this auspicious strategy still in its infancy and raises new scientific problems needing to be clarified, such as the influence of RMs with different charge–transfer or different molecular structure (same redox functional group) on Li2O2 oxidation behavior. Herein, the realities of Li2O2 oxidation by some RMs, including lithium bromide, tetrathiafulvalene, 2,2,6,6–tetramethyl–1–piperidinyloxy, and 2–azaadamantane–N–oxyl, were investigated using detailed experimental results and first–principles calculations. Among these RMs studied, single electron–reaction RMs exhibited a more stable charging curve at lower potential than that of multiple electron–reaction RMs. Besides, the RM molecular with smaller steric effects and higher electron–donating power exhibited higher catalytic activity thus a lower charging overpotential. These findings offered a guidance direction for subsequent explorations and optimization of high performance RMs, which might further facilitate development for Li–O2 batteries.
Minimizing the Abnormal High-Potential Discharge Process Related to Redox Mediators in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:Nonaqueous lithium oxygen batteries can achieve a reduced charge potential when an available redox mediator is introduced. However, there are accompanying problems, such as the shuttle effect and the abnormal high-potential discharge process (>2.96 V) after the first cycle. The shuttle effect can be addressed by developing a blocking separator or resistant solid electrolyte interphase on the anode. No attention has been paid to the abnormal discharge process. Here, we unravel the underlying mechanism causing the undesired abnormal phenomenon. Our results show that the slow reaction rate between the discharged lithium peroxide and redox mediator and the low yield of lithium peroxide should take primary responsibility for the abnormal discharge issue. The sluggish reaction kinetics results from the formed byproducts covering lithium peroxide. We propose developing redox mediator containing hydrate-melt lithium oxygen batteries. The lithium hydroperoxide intermediator shows high reaction activity with the redox mediator and improves battery charge ability, thus solving the abnormal discharge problem. This work sheds light on the further design of lithium oxygen batteries using a redox mediator.
Biphasic Electrolyte Inhibiting the Shuttle Effect of Redox Molecules in Lithium-Metal Batteries

Abstract:Redox molecules (RMs) as electron carriers have been widely used in electrochemical energy-storage devices (ESDs), such as lithium redox flow batteries and lithium-O2 batteries. Unfortunately, migration of RMs to the lithium (Li) anode leads to side reactions, resulting in reduced coulombic efficiency and early cell death. Our proof-of-concept study utilizes a biphasic organic electrolyte to resolve this issue, in which nonafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrohexyl-trimethoxysilane (NFTOS) and ether (or sulfone) with lithium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (LiTFSI) can be separated to form the immiscible anolyte and catholyte. RMs are extracted to the catholyte due to the enormous solubility coefficients in the biphasic electrolytes with high and low polarity, resulting in inhibition of the shuttle effect. When coupled with a lithium anode, the Li-Li symmetric, Li redox flow and Li-O2 batteries can achieve considerably prolonged cycle life with biphasic electrolytes. This concept provides a promising strategy to suppress the shuttle effect of RMs in ESDs.
Redox Mediator: A New Strategy in Designing Cathode for Prompting Redox Process of Li-S Batteries.

Abstract:The multistep redox reactions of lithium-sulfur batteries involve undesirably complex transformation between sulfur and Li2S, and it is tough to spontaneously fragmentate polysulfides into shorter chains Li2S originating from the sluggish redox kinetics of soluble polysulfide intermediates, causing serious polarization and consumption of sulfur. In this work, 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI)/G is employed as sulfur host to accelerate the conversion process between polysulfides and sulfur, which could facilitate the process of both charging and discharging. Moreover, PTCDI has strong adsorption capacity with polysulfides to restrain shuttle effect, resulting in promotional kinetics and cycle stability. A high initial capacity of 1496 mAh g-1 at 0.05 C and slight capacity decay of 0.009% per cycle at 5 C over 1500 cycles can be achieved. Moreover, the cathode could also achieve a high energy efficiency over 85% at 0.5 C. This research extends the knowledge into an original domain for designing high-performance host materials.

Abstract:High concentration LiBr is beneficial to enhance the Br− oxidation rate, displaying stable low voltage plateau during charging process for lithium–oxygen batteries. However, the sufficient cyclic performance is generally restricted by uncontrollable high level Br3−, resulting in the low energy efficiency and shuttle effect. Herein, a nanoreactor, red-ox mediators shuttling suppressor and lithium-metal protector with the combination of the high concentration and shuttle-free LiBr are successfully constructed by anchoring the Br3− to carbonized ZIF-8 supported on reduced graphene oxide substrate (ZC-rGO). ZnO-decorated/nitrogen-doped 3D carbon framework of ZC-rGO cathode can accurately capture Br3− by space confinement effects and/or chemisorption, which is beneficial to improve the oxidation of discharge products (Li2O2) and avoid the anode corrosion. The Li–O2 battery demonstrates enormous advantages of the RMs in comparation with the typical rGO-based batteries, such as better cycling performance (>90 cycles) and more stable overpotential (<1.0 V). The proposed strategy in this study opens up a new way of inhibiting the shuttle effect of RMs in Li–O2 batteries and other halogen batteries.

Abstract:Redox mediators (RMs) have shown promise in enhancing Li‐O2 battery cycling stability by reducing overpotential. However, their application is hindered by the shuttle effect, leading to RM loss and Li anode corrosion. Here, we introduce a polyionic liquid, poly (1‐Butyl‐3‐vinylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonylimine)) ([PBVIm]‐ TFSI) as an additive, showcasing a novel Li anode protection strategy for LiI‐mediated Li‐O2 batteries. [PBVIm]+ cations migrate to the Li anode, forming a protective cationic shield that promotes uniform Li+ deposition. The addition of [PBVIm]‐TFSI enhances the cycling stability, achieving 105 cycles at 200 mA·g‐1, compared to the cell with LiI which exhibited 38 cycles under the same conditions. Synchrotron X‐ray tomography reveals the evolution of this protective layer, providing insights into its formation mechanism, in conjunction with XPS analysis. Our findings offer a new approach to Li anode protection in Li‐O2 batteries, emphasizing the critical role of interfacial engineering for battery performance.

Promoting Li–O2 Batteries with Redox Mediators

Abstract:Li-O2 batteries have a high theoretical specific energy, 3500 Wh kg-1 ; however, its practical capacity is far below this value and limited by the passivation with the insulating discharge product Li2 O2 . The nonconductive nature of Li2 O2 also impedes the charging process, leading to a low coulombic efficiency and high overpotential on charge even at a moderate rate. To address these challenges, redox mediators could be used both during discharge and charge to transfer electrons between O2 /electrode surface or Li2 O2 /electrode surface to overcome the passivation of Li2 O2 , which would facilitate the discharge and charge process. The capacity and current density were significantly improved using the redox mediators, thus representing a promising strategy to achieve a high energy density for Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:In this work, 1-aminopropyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (APMImBr) is introduced in dimethyl sulfoxide-based Li-O2 batteries. The Br- functions as a redox mediator to catalyze the decomposition of the Li2O2 products. Meanwhile, the APMIm+ serves as a scavenging agent for superoxide radicals as well as protects the lithium metal anodes via an in situ formed Li3N-rich solid electrolyte interface layer. As a result, the Li-O2 batteries containing APMImBr delivered an enlarged discharge capacity, a reduced charge overpotential of around 0.61 V and a prolonged cyclic life of over 200 cycles.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries have a great potential in energy storage and conversion due to their ultra-high theoretical specific energy, but their applications are hindered by sluggish redox reaction kinetics in the charge/discharge processes. Redox mediators (RMs), as soluble catalysts, are widely used to facilitate the electrochemical processes in the Li-O2 batteries. A drawback of RMs is the shuttle effect due to their solubility and mobility, which leads to the corrosion of a Li metal anode and the degradation of the electrochemical performance of the batteries. Herein, we synthesize a polymer-based composite protective separator containing molecular sieves. The nanopores with a diameter of 4 Å in the zeolite powder (4A zeolite) are able to physically block the migration of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxy (TEMPO) molecules with a larger size; therefore, the shuttle effect of TEMPO is restrained. With the assistance of the zeolite molecular sieves, the cycle life of the Li-O2 batteries is significantly extended from ∼ 20 to 170 cycles at a current density of 250 mA·g−1 and a limited capacity of 500 mAh·g−1. Our work provides a highly effective approach to suppress the shuttle effects of RMs and boost the electrochemical performance of Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:Practical utilization of zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries is hindered by significant challenges, primarily stemming from the polyiodide shuttle effect on the cathode and dendrite growth on the anode. Herein, a feasible redox-active electrolyte has been introduced with tetraethylammonium iodide as an additive that simultaneously addresses the above mentioned challenges via polyiodide solidification on the cathode and the electrostatic shielding effect on the anode. The tetraethylammonium (TEA+) captures water-soluble polyiodide intermediates (I3 -, I5 -), forming a solid complex at the cathode, thereby suppressing capacity loss during charge/discharge. Furthermore, the TEA+ mitigates dendrite growth on the Zn anode via the electrostatic shielding effect, promoting uniform and compact Zn deposition at the anode. Consequently, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell demonstrates superior cycling stability during Zn plating/stripping over 4,200 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2. The Zn||NiNC full-cell exhibits a stable capacity retention of 98.4% after 20 000 cycles (>5 months) with near-unity Coulombic efficiency at 1 A g-1. The study provides novel insights for establishing a new direction for low-cost, sustainable, and long-lifespan Zn-I2 batteries.
Bifunctional 1-Boc-3-Iodoazetidine Enhancing Lithium Anode Stability and Rechargeability of Lithium–Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:Lithium anode protection is an effective strategy to prohibit the continuous loss of redox mediators (RMs) resulting from the unfavorable "shuttle effect" in lithium–oxygen batteries. In this work, an in situ Li anode protection method is designed by utilizing an organic compound, 1-Boc-3-iodoazetidine (BIA), as both a RM and an additive, to form a lithium anode protective layer. The reaction between Li metal and BIA can form lithium iodide (LiI) and lithium-based organometallic. LiI can effectively reduce the charging overpotential. Meanwhile, the in situ-formed anode protection layer (lithium-based organometallic) can not only effectively prevent RMs from being reduced by the lithium metal, but also inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites. As a result, the lithium–oxygen battery with BIA shows a long cycle life of 260 cycles with a notably reduced charging potential. Reclaiming Inactive Lithium with a Triiodide/Iodide Redox Couple for Practical Lithium Metal Batteries.

Abstract:High-energy-density lithium (Li) metal batteries suffer from a short lifespan owing to apparently ceaseless inactive Li accumulation, which is accompanied by the consumption of electrolyte and active Li reservoir, seriously deteriorating the cyclability of batteries. Herein, a triiodide/iodide (I-3(-)/I-) redox couple initiated by stannic iodide (SnI4) is demonstrated to reclaim inactive Li. The reduction of I-3(-) converts inactive Li into soluble LiI, which then diffuses to the cathode side. The oxidation of LiI by the delithiated cathode transforms cathode into the lithiation state and regenerates I-3(-), reclaiming Li ion from inactive Li. The regenerated I-3(-) engages the further redox reactions. Furthermore, the formation of Sn mitigates the corrosion of I-3(-) on active Li reservoir sacrificially. In working Li | LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 batteries, the accumulated inactive Li is significantly reclaimed by the reversible I-3(-)/I- redox couple, improving the lifespan of batteries by twice. This work initiates a creative solution to reclaim inactive Li for prolonging the lifespan of practical Li metal batteries.

But its discharge product Li2O2 is difficult to be oxidized back in the charge process, which causes high charge overpotential, serious electrolyte decomposition and poor cyclability. An effective way to solve this problem is adding redox mediator (RM) in the electrolyte to catalyze the charge reaction via redox shuttle process. However, the reaction kinetics between the oxidized RM and Li2O2 is seldom reported. Here, taking iodine species as the model RM, we find that the efficiency of the solution phase catalysis is limited by the reaction rate between the oxidized RM and Li2O2, which is largely dependent on the electrolyte solvent. Protic solvents, such as water and alcohols lead to high reaction rate because of the hydrogen bond-assisted solvation of Li2O2. However, too high proton activity may also bring unwanted peroxide disproportionation. Among a series of alcohols, n-butanol is found to show proper proton activity and significantly promote the efficiency of the redox shuttle process. To prove the electrochemical mechanisms, this paper also introduces a Li2O2-graphite cell to evaluate the reversibility of cathodic reaction. Comparing with conventional cycling tests with excess lithium metal anode, the Li2O2-graphite configuration can eliminate the “fake reversible capacity” caused by parasitic cathodic reactions, and thus is more reliable.

Abstract:The lithium−oxygen (Li–O2) battery is considered as a promising candidate for the next-generation energy storage systems owing to its high theoretic specific energy. However, the slow kinetics of Li–O2 batteries cause a high charging overpotential, which leads to poor cyclability. Redox mediators are introduced as a promising tool to reduce the overpotentials of Li–O2 batteries. Unfortunately, the oxidized redox mediators can diffuse to the lithium anode and induce undesirable reactions. This so-called “shuttle effect” leads to the consumption of the redox mediators and the decrease of battery round-trip efficiency. In this work, an organic bromine, bromonitromethane (BrCH2NO2), can act bifunctionally as a redox mediator and a lithium anode protective layer-forming agent for Li–O2 batteries. It generates bromine ion (Br−) and in situ forms a lithium anode protective layer via reducing on lithium anode. This layer suppresses the shuttle effect and allows efficient lithium ion (Li+) transfer. The superior cycling performance of batteries containing BrCH2NO2 demonstrates that the suitable bifunctional redox mediator is important for highly efficient and stable Li–O2 batteries.

Abstract:The high charging overpotential and insulating/insoluble Li2O2 discharge products have seriously hindered the development of Li-O2 batteries. Here, we report a highly concentrated 5.0 M lithium nitrate (LiNO3) in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) with TEMPO as a redox mediator (RM) and with the LiF layer by adding DMTFA in the electrolyte, which reduces the charge voltage (3.6 V over 65 cycles), and allows stable cycling for 100 cycles without noticeably fading in capacity. The Li plating/stripping test and electrochemical impedance of the Li/Li symmetric cell results reveal that a Li/Li symmetric cell with DMTFA is stable due to the formation of a LiF protective layer on the Li metal, which suppresses the RM shuttle effect, improving the interface stability of the Li and the electrolyte, and also restraining the growth of dendrite during cell cycling. This work may provide a novel strategy for designing a protective layer for Li anodes in Li-O2 batteries when using an RM.

Abstract:Although redox mediator (RM) strategy can decrease the overpotential in Li-O2 batteries by tuning the electrochemical formation/degradation of Li2O2 from the circumscribed surface pathway to the solution one, the redox shuttling causes an unexpected RM degradation and a continuous deterioration of Li anode, finally leading to a poor cyclability. This work presents the first report detailing the development of a novel MnxCo3-xO4-decorated separator for Li-LiI-O2 batteries. Benefiting from the promotion effect of MnxCo3-xO4 nanocages on I−/I3 − and I3 −/I2 redox coupling, the cell with as-prepared separator maintains a low charge potential of ~3.3 V till the death of cell cycling. In addition, as-prepared separator can efficiently restrain the redox shuttling, leading to an obvious improvement on cycling stability for the cell. Moreover, the contributions of LiI to the battery performance and the operation mechanism are systematically investigated. These results present a promising progress in the development of multi-functional separator materials for RM-involved Li-O2 batteries and the new design of hybrid energy storage device.
