Abstract:Li-O2 batteries have a high theoretical specific energy, 3500 Wh kg-1 ; however, its practical capacity is far below this value and limited by the passivation with the insulating discharge product Li2 O2 . The nonconductive nature of Li2 O2 also impedes the charging process, leading to a low coulombic efficiency and high overpotential on charge even at a moderate rate. To address these challenges, redox mediators could be used both during discharge and charge to transfer electrons between O2 /electrode surface or Li2 O2 /electrode surface to overcome the passivation of Li2 O2 , which would facilitate the discharge and charge process. The capacity and current density were significantly improved using the redox mediators, thus representing a promising strategy to achieve a high energy density for Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:For safety concerns, polymer-based Li-O-2 batteries have received more attention than traditional non-aqueous Li-O-2 batteries. However, poor cycling stability, low round trip efficiency, and over charge potential during cycling are the major shortcomings for their future applications. In this work, a soluble redox mediator integrated into a polymer electrolyte provides immediate access to the solid discharged product, lowering the energy barrier for reversible Li2O2 generation and disintegration. Moreover, introducing a redox mediator to the polymer electrolyte boosts the ORR during discharge and the OER during the recharge process. The synergistic redox mediator pBQ (1,4 benzoquinone) dramatically reduces the over-potential. A small proportion of pBQ in the polymer electrolyte allows Li2O2 to develop in a thin film-like morphology on the cathode surface, resulting in a high reversible capacity of similar to 12 000 mA h g(-1) and an extended cycling stability of 100 cycles at 200 mA g(-1) with a cut-off capacity of 1000 mA h g(-1). The remarkable cell performance is attributed to the fast kinetics of para benzoquinone for the ORR and OER in Li-O-2 batteries. The use of a redox mediator in a polymer electrolyte opens a new avenue for practical Li-O-2 battery applications in achieving low charge potential and excellent energy efficiency.

Abstract:Non-aqueous lithium-oxygen battery is considered as the next-generation battery because it has the highest theoretic energy density among all rechargeable batteries. But its discharge product Li2O2 is difficult to be oxidized back in the charge process, which causes high charge overpotential, serious electrolyte decomposition and poor cyclability. An effective way to solve this problem is adding redox mediator (RM) in the electrolyte to catalyze the charge reaction via redox shuttle process. However, the reaction kinetics between the oxidized RM and Li2O2 is seldom reported. Here, taking iodine species as the model RM, we find that the efficiency of the solution phase catalysis is limited by the reaction rate between the oxidized RM and Li2O2, which is largely dependent on the electrolyte solvent. Protic solvents, such as water and alcohols lead to high reaction rate because of the hydrogen bond-assisted solvation of Li2O2. However, too high proton activity may also bring unwanted peroxide disproportionation. Among a series of alcohols, n-butanol is found to show proper proton activity and significantly promote the efficiency of the redox shuttle process. To prove the electrochemical mechanisms, this paper also introduces a Li2O2-graphite cell to evaluate the reversibility of cathodic reaction. Comparing with conventional cycling tests with excess lithium metal anode, the Li2O2-graphite configuration can eliminate the “fake reversible capacity” caused by parasitic cathodic reactions, and thus is more reliable.

Abstract:Development of lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries is hindered by large overpotentials, low energy efficiency and unsatisfactory cycling life, which are predominately caused by the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involving sluggish oxidation of lithium peroxide (Li2O2). Herein, a highly-efficient soluble redox mediator (RM) of N,N’-Diphenyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPPD) is introduced to catalyze the oxygen evolution reaction for Li-O2 batteries. During charging process, DPPD is electrochemically oxidized into DPPD+, which can chemically decompose Li2O2 on the cathode with a much-reduced overpotential. The in-situ differential electrochemical mass spectrometry confirms that the charging process is dominated by Li2O2 decomposition. With the assistance of DPPD, Li-O2 cells can achieve lower charging potential, improved cycling stability, and prolonged lifespan (294 cycles) which is three times longer than that of tetrathiafulvalene counterpart. This work presents a credible and viable opportunity for long lifespan Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:The lithium−oxygen (Li–O2) battery is considered as a promising candidate for the next-generation energy storage systems owing to its high theoretic specific energy. However, the slow kinetics of Li–O2 batteries cause a high charging overpotential, which leads to poor cyclability. Redox mediators are introduced as a promising tool to reduce the overpotentials of Li–O2 batteries. Unfortunately, the oxidized redox mediators can diffuse to the lithium anode and induce undesirable reactions. This so-called “shuttle effect” leads to the consumption of the redox mediators and the decrease of battery round-trip efficiency. In this work, an organic bromine, bromonitromethane (BrCH2NO2), can act bifunctionally as a redox mediator and a lithium anode protective layer-forming agent for Li–O2 batteries. It generates bromine ion (Br−) and in situ forms a lithium anode protective layer via reducing on lithium anode. This layer suppresses the shuttle effect and allows efficient lithium ion (Li+) transfer. The superior cycling performance of batteries containing BrCH2NO2 demonstrates that the suitable bifunctional redox mediator is important for highly efficient and stable Li–O2 batteries.

Abstract:Soluble redox mediators (RMs) are one of the most promising approaches for reducing charging overpotentials in Li–O2 batteries. However, this auspicious strategy still in its infancy and raises new scientific problems needing to be clarified, such as the influence of RMs with different charge–transfer or different molecular structure (same redox functional group) on Li2O2 oxidation behavior. Herein, the realities of Li2O2 oxidation by some RMs, including lithium bromide, tetrathiafulvalene, 2,2,6,6–tetramethyl–1–piperidinyloxy, and 2–azaadamantane–N–oxyl, were investigated using detailed experimental results and first–principles calculations. Among these RMs studied, single electron–reaction RMs exhibited a more stable charging curve at lower potential than that of multiple electron–reaction RMs. Besides, the RM molecular with smaller steric effects and higher electron–donating power exhibited higher catalytic activity thus a lower charging overpotential. These findings offered a guidance direction for subsequent explorations and optimization of high performance RMs, which might further facilitate development for Li–O2 batteries.

Abstract:Aprotic lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are receiving intense research interest by virtue of their ultra-high theoretical specific energy. However, current Li-O2 batteries are suffering from severe barriers, such as sluggish reaction kinetics and undesired parasitic reactions. Recently, molecular catalysts, i.e. redox mediators (RMs), have been explored to catalyse the oxygen electrochemistry in Li-O2 batteries and are regarded as an advanced solution. To fully unlock the capability of Li-O2 batteries, an in-depth understanding of the catalytic mechanisms of RMs is necessary. In this review, we summarize the working principles of RMs and their selection criteria, highlight the recent significant progress of RMs and discuss the critical scientific and technical challenges on the design of efficient RMs for next-generation Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:Due to cathode passivation caused by the insulating discharged products and by-products, Li-O-2 batteries sustain some obstacles encompassing poor discharge capacity and high overpotential. Herein, we introduce 6-Ethoxy2,2,4-trimethylquinoline (EQ) as a bifunctional redox mediator into electrolyte and investigate its influence on the electrochemical performance of Li-O-2 batteries. Strikingly, the discharge process is promoted in the solution phase by the solvated Li+ with EQ, and the correlative capacity exhibits more than a 30-fold increase than pristine Li-O-2 battery at the current density of 3000 mA g(-1) carbon. DFT calculations further clarify the working mechanism of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) induced by EQ. Furthermore, the surface electrostatic potential diagram shows that N and O atoms in EQ are electron-rich, which is prone to donate electrons to get its desirable oxidation state and effectively catalyze the oxidation of Li2O2, resulting in the extremely low charge plateau at 3.08 V and longtime stable cyclability (150 cycles at a current density of 500 mA g(-1) carbon with a fixed capacity of 1000 mAh g(-1) carbon).

Abstract:Limited by the energy density and stability of currently developed Li-ion battery, there are eager demands for high energy density of electrochemical energy storage devices. Among various candidates, Li-O2 battery has been recognized as one type of the next generation lithium battery to achieve the energy density goal of 350-500 Wh kg−1 due to its extremely high theoretical energy density. However, there are gaps in terms of achievable energy density, rate-capability and cycling performance with respect to practical applications. One of the main reasons is the sluggish reaction kinetics of oxygen electrochemistry at the cathode caused by the insolubility and insulation of the discharge product Li2O2. Considering the advantage of mobility in Li-O2 battery over general solid catalysts, soluble catalytic redox mediators have been introduced into aprotic Li-O2 battery to facilitate the kinetics of both oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction on the cathode and extensively investigated. In this paper, recent progress on the application of soluble catalytic redox mediators in non-aqueous Li-O2 battery is systematically reviewed with focus on the underpinning chemical and electrochemical reaction mechanisms, after a brief discussion on the electrolyte solvent which plays a crucial role on the battery performance. The challenges and future opportunities of Li-O2 battery containing soluble catalytic redox mediators are also summarized and analyzed in this paper.

Abstract:Aprotic lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries have received attention as a result of their high theoretical energy density and potentially low material cost. However, their practical applications are limited by side reactions from extremely active singlet oxygen (1O2), lithium superoxide, and insulated lithium peroxide. The use of redox mediators (RMs) has emerged as a strategy to avoid such irreversible reactions. This review summarizes typical RMs on discharging and charging and their corresponding reaction mechanism. Useful non-electroactive additives are also mentioned for inspiration on RMs preparation. Strategies for suppressing shuttle effects and reducing 1O2-induced degradation are further discussed to achieve high reversibility when using RMs. Finally, prospects and conclusions for reversible Li–O2 cells are presented.

Abstract:The application of redox mediators has been considered as a promising strategy to boost the performance of aprotic Li-O 2 batteries.However,the issues brought with redox mediators,especially on the Li anode side have been overlooked.Here,we propose a facile approach of preparing a gel polymer membrane that not only allow uniform Li plating/stripping withlarge current densities over extended cycling but also inhibit the diffusion of redox mediators and avoid redox shuttling,self-discharge,and internal shortcircuiting.More importantly,the gel polymer membrane prevents the penetration of O 2 and superoxide intermediates from the Li anode. Therefore,it ensures the successful application of both lithium anode and redox mediators in Li-O 2 batteries to achieve the desired high capacity and rate performance.Meanwhile,it helps understand the benefit and problems of added redox mediators and reactive oxygen species so that theperformance of such Li-O 2 batteries can be truly evaluated.

Abstract:The realization of practical aprotic Li-O-2 batteries is hindered by superoxide-related parasitic reactions and high overpotentials. Herein, a heme-based nanozyme containing iron-porphyrin derivative ligands is used as a novel electrolyte additive to scavenge superoxide radicals in the Li-O-2 system. Specially, this type of nanozyme can act as a bifunctional catalyst for both discharge and charge by coordinating with superoxide intermediates, functioning as a molecular shuttle of superoxide species and electrons between cathodes and products. As a consequence, the Li-O-2 batteries exhibit boosted discharge capacity, reduced charge polarization and superior cycling stability in the presence of the nanozyme additive. This first attempt to using nanozyme in Li-O-2 batteries should pave a new way for the sustainable cross-link between biomimetic enzymes and advanced energy storage.

Abstract:A nitrogen, sulfur‐containing organic iodide—acetylthiocholine iodide (ATCI) is first proposed as a defense‐donor redox mediator (RM) to simultaneously address the large charge overpotential and unstable Li metal interface issues in Li−O2 batteries. As a result, the ATCI‐containing Li−O2 batteries show excellent performance, with a low charge potential and a prolonged cycle life. Lithium–oxygen batteries (LOBs) suffer from large charge overpotential and unstable Li metal interface, which can be attributed to the inefficient charge transport at the insulating Li2O2/cathode interface and the severe oxygen corrosion issue on the Li anode surface. The use of soluble redox mediators (RMs) can effectively enhance the charge transport between Li2O2 and cathode, thus greatly reducing the charge overpotential. However, oxidized RMs will also shuttle to the anode side and react with the Li metal, which not only results in the loss of both the RMs and the electrical energy efficiency but also exacerbates the Li anode corrosion. Herein, an organic compound—acetylthiocholine iodide (ATCI), in which a big cation group is contained, is proposed as a defense‐donor RM for lithium anode in LOBs to simultaneously address the above issues. During charge, it can accelerate the oxidation kinetics of Li2O2 via its iodide anion redox couple (I−/I3−). Meanwhile, its cation segment (ATC+) can move to the anode surface via electric attraction and in situ forms a protective interfacial layer, which prevents the Li anode from the attack of oxidized RM and oxygen species. Consequently, the ATCI‐containing LOBs can achieve both a low charge potential (≈3.49 V) and a long cycle life (≈190 cycles).
