Abstract:Phosphorous modified high silica ZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized by infusion method.XRD BET and NH3-TPD results showed that phosphorous compounds were loaded uniformly on the surface of catalyst and de-aluminated pore surface was observed.The strong acids of phosphorous modified catalyst decreased and the weak acids increased.It also revealed from the results of methanol to propylene reaction that the phosphorous compounds in high silica ZSM-5 catalysts could suppress the hydrogen transfer reaction and increase the propylene selectivity.But the activity of catalysts would decrease rapidly when the phosphorous was over-loaded.
Catalytic Performance of Modified ZSM-5 Designed with Selectively Passivated External Surface Acidity by Phosphorus

Abstract:A phosphorus modified HZSM-5 sample with excellent p-xylene selectivity was successfully obtained by a method of reversing the external surface ZSM-5 crystals to positive charged by HDTMA, which could selectively deposit the phosphorus on the external surface and pore entrance. The texture properties were characterized by XRD, XRF and N2 adsorption–desorption. The accessibility of acid sites was determined by NH3-TPD and Py/Coll-IR. The solid-state NMR measurement indicated that more phosphorus did not enter the pores of the MZS-1.5P sample and existed as H4P2O7 or polyphosphates not connected to aluminum. Applied to alkylation of toluene with methanol, MZS-1.5P sample all exhibited excellent para-selectivity at reaction temperatures of 360–420 °C and WHSV of 1.0–4.0 h–1. The TPD of xylene analysis showed that the interactions between diffusing molecule and surface of ZSM-5 as well as the geometric factors play important roles in the diffusion process.

Abstract:HZSM-5@silicalite-1 catalysts were prepared by the hydrothermal method, and the structure, morphology, acidity and pore texture of core–shell catalysts were studied by XRD, SEM, TEM, NH3-TPD, Py-IR and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms in detail. Their catalytic performances were tested in the alkylation reaction of toluene with methanol. The results showed that a coating layer was formed in the form of silicalite-1 on HZSM-5. NH3-TPD measurements indicated that HZSM-5@silicalite-1 contained less strong acid sites but more weak acid sites than the parent HZSM-5. The selectivity of p-xylene for toluene alkylation was approximately linear with the percentage of weak acid in total acid. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the conversion of toluene was 34.15%, and the selectivity of p-xylene was 96.77%.

Abstract:This work aims at revealing the reaction and carbon behavior of SAPO-34/ZSM-5 composite molecular sieve (SZ-TS) in MTO reaction, which is synthesized via in situ two-step crystallization method. Several tests are used to explore the structure–activity relationship of the SZ-TS. The results show that the strength of weak and medium-strong acid is suitable, the particle size of two-phase molecular sieve is decreased, the hierarchical pore structure with abundant mesoporous is formed. By using the SZ-TS in MTO reaction, the methanol conversion and light olefins selectivity are 98% and 92.7%, respectively. These results can be attributed to the interface phase effect produced by etching and dissociation on the skeleton of the nuclear phase SAPO-34. The result of in situ IR and analysis of carbon deactivation indicate that polymethylbenzene is generated as the active intermediate of MTO reaction.SZ-TS with appropriate acid sites and rich mesoporous distribution could alleviate the formation rate of methyl-substituted benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, smaller particle size can avoid the occurrence of secondary reactions of olefins, therefore displaying the excellent resistance to the carbon deposition inactivation, with a catalytic lifetime up to 1380 min.

Effects of Silicalite-1 Coating on the p-Xylene Selectivity and Catalytic Stability of HZSM-5 in Toluene Methylation with Methanol

Abstract:The methanol–toluene alkylation process over zeolites catalysts offers a promising route for the production of p-xylene from low-cost feedstocks. Herein, we present a catalyst by preparing a core-shell aluminosilicate zeolite with an epitaxial silicalite-1 shell that passivates acid sites on the exterior surfaces. The para-selectivity was obviously increased due to the inhibition of the unselective isomerization of p-xylene over the external acid sites, and the open porous structure of the silicalite-1 shell ensured the mass transfer of reactants and products. Meanwhile, the carbon deposition was suppressed over HZSM-5@silicalite-1 catalysts, as a result of the decreased external acid sites. Furthermore, pulse chromatographic experiments revealed that the silicalite-1 coating could also improve the separation efficiency of p-xylene over o-xylene and m-xylene, due to the steric hindrance and extended diffusion path, resulting in a higher selectivity for p-xylene compared to that of the parent HZSM-5. The HZSM-5@4%S-1 catalyst showed the highest p-xylene selectivity (>80%) and methanol efficiency (66%), with good catalytic stability throughout the 170 h reaction time.

Abstract:Although the preparation of ZSM-5@silicalite-1 (ZS) core-shell catalysts has been reported in the literature, their selectivity to pars-xylene (PX) in the toluene alkylation with methanol is difficult to control. Here we present the effects of water and ZSM-5 adding amounts in the synthesis solution, the hydrothermal synthesis time, and the Si/Al ratio of core ZSM-5 on the catalytic performance of ZS core-shell catalysts. The ZS core-shell catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, and NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) techniques. The highest PX selectivity of 95.5% was obtained for the ZS (Si/Al = 140) catalyst prepared in the synthesis solution with a molar ratio of 0.2TPAOH:1TEOS:250H(2)O at 175 degrees C and 10 r.min(-1) for only 2 h and the corresponding toluene conversion is as high as 22.8% for the alkylation of toluene with methanol. Abstract:Modified high silica HZSM-5 catalysts have been used to selectively transform methanol to propylene (MTP). The HZSM-5 catalyst with a Si/Al ratio of 220 exhibited satisfying catalytic performance (space time yield of propylene is up to 18mmol/gh). The selectivity of propylene can be obviously affected by additives. P leads to a pronounced improvement of propylene selectivity up to 55.6% with complete conversion of methanol. The enhancement of propylene selectivity and catalytic life can be attributed to partial elimination of the strong acid sites on the HZSM-5 catalyst.

Abstract:H-ZSM-5, H-IM-5, and H-IM-5(DS) zeolites were synthesized as highly active and shape selective catalysts for the alkylation of benzene with methanol. The samples were characterized by N2-adsorption-desorption, XRD, SEM, TEM, NH3-TPD, and Py-FTIR. The benzene conversion and xylene selectivity were in the same order H-IM-5(DS) > H-IM-5 > H-ZSM-5, while the toluene selectivity was in the reverse order. Combined with the analysis of pore structure and TEM, H-IM-5(DS) zeolite was equipped with more meso/macropores and it exhibited even better catalytic properties. The optimum reaction condition with H-IM-5(DS) as catalysts was obtained.

Abstract:In this work the controlled SiO2 deposition on the HZSM-5 of medium (M-) and small (S-) sized grains is accomplished through the mild steam-pretreatment of zeolites (to modify the density of surface OH groups) followed by chemical liquid deposition (CLD) process. The amount of deposited SiO2 is tunable by varying the conditions of steam-pretreatment and/or CLD process, which allows quantitative correlating the changes of sample characteristics with the amount of deposited SiO2. NH3-TPD, pyridine and 2,6-DBT-pyridine adsorption infrared spectroscopic studies revealed the effect of surface SiO2 deposition on strength (weak and strong), type (Brønsted and Lewis), and location (external) of acid sites of HZSM-5. The external Brønsted acid sites of more than 75% are diminished upon SiO2 deposition of 13wt%. Due to pre-existing extra Na+ in S-HZSM-5, less amount of SiO2 deposition or P-doping will cause more obvious enhancement in para-selectivity on S-HZSM-5. The present study revealed that with the integrated modifications of SiO2 deposition and P–Ni doping on S-HZSM-5, toluene conversion of 31% and para-selectivity of 91% can be achieved. It was also found that doping of 5wt% Na and 6wt% P to M-HZSM-5 (free of silylation) can give p-xylene selectivity of ∼80% at toluene conversion of ∼26%. SiO2 deposition can more obviously reduce the strong acid sites, and P–Ni doping seems also to affect Lewis acidity. Low density of Brønsted (external)/Lewis acid sites and controlled diffusivity of HZSM-5 would be favorable for p-xylene generation in toluene alkylation with methanol.

Abstract:P modified ZSM-5/aluminophosphates composite zeolite(wP-ZSM-5/AlPO4-m)was obtained by NH4H2PO4 modification of ZSM-5/AlPO4-mand characterized by XRD,N2 adsorptiondesorption,NH3-TPD,FT-IR and so on.The effects of P loaded amount in wP-ZSM-5/AlPO4-m and the reaction conditions,reaction temperature and space velocity,on methanol conversion and product selectivity of MTP were investigated.It was confirmed that the surface area,acid strength and acid amount of wP-ZSM-5/AlPO4-m were effectively regulated by P modification,and the maximum ratio of B acid and L acid reached 3.03in 3%P-ZSM-5/AlPO4-m,which had the best catalytic activity and stability at the reaction temperature of 500℃ and MHSV of 1h-1.The conversion rate of methanol,selectivity of propylene,molar ratio of propylene and ethylene remained around 100%,50% and 5,respectively,when the reaction continued for 73h.
Catalytic Study of Methanol-to-Propylene Conversion over Nano-Sized HZSM-5

Abstract:Methanol-to-propylene conversion was carried out in a continuous-flow fixed-bed reactor over nano-sized HZSM-5 zeolites. The HZSM-5 catalysts were synthesized with different Si/Al ratio and silicon sources, and treated with NaOH. The structural property, morphology, and acidity of catalysts were measured by XRD, N2 adsorption, FE-SEM, TEM, and NH3-TPD. The results indicate that the increment of Si/Al ratio decreased the acidity of catalysts and then improved propylene selectivity, while silicon sources had slight impact on the acidity but affected the product distribution. The desilication after alkali treatment could increase intracrystalline mesopores and enhance propylene selectivity. Keywords—Alkali treatment, HZSM-5, methanol-to-propylene, synthesis condition.

Abstract:HMCM-49/MCM-41 composite molecular sieve was synthesized with hydrothermal method. The physicochemical properties of the composite were characterized by using XRD, FT-IR, SEM, N-2 isothermal adsorption-desorption and NH3-TPD. Results of different characterizations indicated that the synthesized composite molecular sieve possessed the characteristics of both HMCM-49 and MCM-41. XRD and N-2 isothermal adsorption-desorption revealed that it has both micropores and mesopores, a larger surface area than that of HMCM-49, NH3-TPD and pyridine adsorbed FT-IR revealed that the strong acidic sites that caused side reaction in HMCM-49 are deactivated in the composite molecular sieve of HMCM-49/MCM-41. When applied to the alkylation of phenol with isopropanol, the HMCM-49/MCM-41 composite molecular sieve exhibit an enhanced catalytic performance with significant enhancement in p-isopropylphenol and o-isopropylphenol selectivity, which can be ascribed to the composite characteristics of HMCM-49 and MCM-41. This kind of material will has widely industrial application in preparation of alkyl-phenol.

Abstract:SAPO-34 catalysts with high selectivity for light olefins were first synthesized via the introduction of phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo) and AlPO 4 -5 zeolite into the initial gel. The physical and chemical characteristics of the synthesized catalysts were determined by a series of techniques and the catalytic performance of the modified composite zeolites for the methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reaction was investigated. The results indicated that HPMo-modified SAPO-34 was featured with more Brønsted acid sites, more mesopores, and a smaller crystal size, thereby demonstrating superior catalytic performance. The further combination with AlPO 4 -5 (16.7 wt%) prolonged the lifetime of the HPMo-modified SAPO-34, which is thought in this paper related to its 12-ring straight channel (0.7-0.8 nm) and the absence of any Brønsted acid sites. The MTO tests showed that the light olefins selectivity for the modified composite zeolites reached 95.1%, while the catalyst lifetime remained at 445 min.

Effects of Desilication in NaOH/Piperidine Medium and Phosphorus Modification on the Catalytic Activity of HZSM-5 Catalyst in Methanol to Propylene Conversion

Abstract:Background: Propylene is one of the main petrochemical building blocks applied as a feedstock for various chemical and polymer intermediates. The methanol-to-propylene (MTP) processes are reliable options for propylene production from non-petroleum resources. The highsilica ZSM-5 zeolite is found to be a reliable candidate for the methanol to propylene catalysis. Objective: In this study, the mesoporosity was first introduced into a high silica ZSM-5 zeolite via an alkaline treatment by NaOH solution with piperidine to decrease the diffusion limitation, and then the structure of zeolite was stabilized by phosphorus modification to improve the acidic properties and to enhance the catalyst stability. Methods: High-silica H-ZSM-5 catalysts (Si/Al = 200) were successfully prepared through microwave-assisted hydrothermal technique in the presence of tetrapropyl ammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) structure-directing agent. The mesoporosity was efficiently introduced into the ZSM-5 crystals via desilication derived from alkaline NaOH/piperidine solution. Then, the acidity of the desilicated ZSM-5 samples was improved using phosphorus modification. The catalysts were subjected to XRD, ICP-OES, FE-SEM, BET, TGA, FT-IR and NH3-TPD analysis. Results: The catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts in the methanol to propylene (MTP) reaction was examined in a fixed-bed reactor at 475 °C, atmospheric pressure and methanol WHSV of 0.9 h-1. The results showed that the alkaline treatment in NaOH/piperidine solution created uniform mesoporosity with no severe damage in the crystal structure. Similarly, phosphorus modification developed the acidic features and led to the optimal catalytic efficiency in terms of the maximum propylene selectivity (49.16%) and P/E ratio (5.97) as well as the catalyst lifetime. Conclusion: The results showed an excellent catalytic activity in terms of 99.21% methanol conversion, good propylene selectivity up to 49.16%, a high ratio of P/E of 5.97 and a low selectivity to C5 + hydrocarbons of 11.57% for ZS-D-PI-P sample.
IM-5 zeolite with abundant narrow mesopores and modulated acidity as stable and selective cracking catalyst

Abstract:High-performance IM-5 was prepared by tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) and NaOH alkaline treatment. The modification of combined alkaline treatment on the pore and acidity were systematically characterized. The 29Si NMR results indicated that Si(4Si, 0Al) sites were protected by tetrapropylammonium cation (TPA+) at low TPAOH/(NaOH + TPAOH) molar ratio, while the protection effect extended to some Si(3Si, 1Al) sites at TPAOH/(NaOH + TPAOH) ratio of 75%. And, the amount of strong Brønsted acid sites decreased significantly from 255 μmol g−1 to 119 μmol g−1 under the optimal TPAOH/NaOH alkaline treatment conditions. Compared to NaOH treatment alone, the mesopore volume and external surface area of IM-5 were further increased with TPAOH introduced, meanwhile, the mesopore size was shrunken into the range of 2–10 nm centered at 5 nm. Compared to NaOH treated IM-5 catalyst, the TPAOH/NaOH treated one exhibited higher initial light olefins yield (53.4% vs. 45.2% for n-heptane cracking) and better catalytic stability and regeneration properties. The abundant narrow mesopores contributed into high tolerance ability to coke deposition in IM-5 catalysts, as confirmed by TGA results.

Abstract:A series of HZSM-5 zeolite catalysts modified with MgO, La2O3 and La2O3-MgO were prepared by the impregnation method and characterized by XRD, N-2-adsorption, NH3-TPD, pyridine-adsorption IR spectroscopy and model reaction of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene. Methylation of toluene with methanol to p-xylene was carried out over these catalysts. According to the research, MgO, is mainly deposited on the external surface of HZSM-5, which results in the inactivation of external surface acid sites of MgO/HZSM-5, and the MgO/ HZSM-5 catalysts show only a little higher p-xylene selectivity than HZSM-5. However, highly dispersed La2O3 on La2O3/HZSM-5 covers the strong acid sites and narrows the pore channels of HZSM-5, which leads to a better p-xylene selectivity. The p-xylene selectivity of the La2O3-MgO/HZSM-5 catalyst is significantly improved to 93%, and the conversion of toluene is lowered a little to 20%, owing to the dual effect of L(a)2O(3) and MgO. The results show that the reduction of pore dimension of the HZSM-5 catalysts has a greater effect on the p-xylene selectivity enhancement than the suppression of strong acid sites and inactivation of external surface acid sites.
Organic acid-modified high silica HZSM-5 zeolite and application thereof in methanol to propylene

Abstract:HZSM-5 zeolites were treated with organic acids such as tartaric acid,citric acid and oxalic acid,and then applied in methanol to propylene. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET,NH3-TPD,SEM and TEM. The characterization results showed that the acid treatment did not result in destructions of the crystal structure of the HZSM-5,the acid-treated zeolites had decreased micropore volume and both increased total pore volume and specific surface area with secondary mesopores formed in the surface thereof,and that the acid-treated zeolites had increased weak acid sites and reduced strong acid sites,and the most significant effect was produced after the treatment with tartaric acid. Under the reaction conditions of normal pressure,480 ℃ and WHSV of 2 h-1,compared to as-received HZSM-5,the HZSM-5 catalyst modified with 0.1 mol/L tartaric acid was reduced in methane selectivity from 0.73% to 0.25% and in aromatics selectivity from 8.89% to 5.87%,and increased in propylene selectivity from 56.00% to 59.73% and in propylene/propane ratio from 41.79 to 51.94,indicating a significant enhancement in catalytic performance.

Abstract:In the present work, mesoporosity is introduced into highly siliceous HZSM-5 zeolites (SiO2/Al2O3 = 400) by a two-step path including desilication using NaAlO2 and TPAOH (tetrapropylammonium hydroxide) mixtures, followed by acid washing treatment. The physicochemical properties of conventional microporous HZSM-5 and all treated samples were characterized by ICP-OES, XRD, FE-SEM, BET and NH3-TPD methods. The catalytic performance of the HZSM-5 samples was determined in methanol to propylene conversion reaction at 460 °C and methanol WHSV of 0.9 h-1 using feed containing 50 wt% methanol in water. The results showed that the porosity of the desilicated samples has been mainly blocked by sodium aluminate derived deposits and silicon-containing debris. After a subsequent acid washing step with hydrochloric acid, the blocking species were removed which resulted in improving the mesoporosity generated in the desilication step. It was found that alkaline-acid treatment in a NaAlO2/TPAOH solution with TPAOH/(NaAlO2 + TPAOH) = 0.4 followed by acid washing, leads to the formation of narrow and uniform mesoporosity without severely destroying the crystal structure. Also, it exhibits higher selectivities to propylene (37.7 vs. 30.7%) and total butylenes (21.2 vs. 16.1%), propylene to ethylene ratio (4.0 vs. 2.7), as well as total light olefins (68.4 vs. 57.9%) compared to the parent catalyst, while its selectivities to C1-C4 alkanes (9.6 vs. 13.7%) and heavy hydrocarbons (13.8 vs. 28.4%) are relatively lower. The lifetime of the optimum alkaline-acid treated sample (640 h) showed a significant increase compared to that of the parent catalyst (425 h). The results exhibited that desilication process leads to a considerable mesoporosity development, while acid washing treatment mostly influences on the catalyst acidity. Therefore, the combination of the alkaline-acid treatment leads to hierarchical HZSM-5 catalyst formation with tailored pore architecture and surface acidic properties.
Catalytic properties and deactivation behavior of modified H-ZSM-5 in the conversion of methanol-to-aromatics

Abstract:A comparative study on the effects of SiO2 modification and mesoporous structures on catalytic performances over ZSM-5 zeolites in MTA conversion both theoretically and experimentally was done. Experimental results showed that hierarchical pores increased the production of aromatics. However, DFT calculation proved that energy barriers for producing aromatics over mesoporous ZSM-5 were larger than that of parent ZSM-5 due to decreasing acid strength after alkali treatment which significantly influenced rate-determining step. Furthermore, diffusion behaviors of toluene were studied by Molecular Dynamics. Larger pores led to the improvement of diffusion behaviors over hierarchical ZSM-5 owing to the decrease of collision frequency between molecules. Therefore, the formation of aromatics was mainly determined by diffusion limitation over hierarchical ZSM-5. The lowest BTX selectivity was obtained over SiO2 deposited mesoporous ZSM-5 due to decreasing acid strength and blockage of pore mouth. Additionally, the deactivation of ZSM-5 serial catalysts in MTA was attributed the formation of insoluble coke. Moreover, the introduction of mesopores and silylation on external surface alleviated the deactivation of catalysts.

Abstract:A hollow HZSM-5 supported molybdenum (Mo) catalyst was successfully prepared by desilication-recrystallization method of HZSM-5 in tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH) solution. The as-synthesized catalyst exhibiting excellent performance in propane aromatization reaction was thoroughly investigated, along with the mechanism for the formation of hollow structure and mechanism for the deactivation. Results revealed that TPA(+) exerted a controllable desilication and recrystallization effect. Compared with Na2CO3 treatment which led to a mesoporous structure, TPAOH treatment was able to leach out the inner Si species by OH- and then those Si species recrystallized on the external surface, resulting in the hollow structure and a silicon-rich external surface. In addition, the hollow zeolite exposing higher external surface provided more anchoring sites for Mo species, which was beneficial to the Mo related Lewis acid sites but decreased the surface Bronsted acidity. At 823 K and a space velocity of 1800 mL.g(-1).h(-1), the hollow Mo/HZSM-5(TPAOH) catalyst behaved a propane conversion of 73.01% and aromatics selectivity of 77.36%, exceeding those of the hierarchical Mo/HZSM-5(Na2CO3) catalyst by 5.97% and 9.96%, respectively. These features of Mo/HZSM-5(TPAOH) granted it superb diffusion ability and optimized Bronsted/Lewis acid ratio (B/L = 1.3), which greatly enhanced the propane conversion and aromatic selectivity together with a preeminent catalytic stability.
