Abstract:The autoignition characteristics of binary fuels of n-heptane, a typical surrogate of diesel fuel, and butanol isomers (n-butanol, i-butanol and s-butanol), were investigated on a constant volume combustion chamber. The ignition and combustion delay times, pressure and heat release rate traces in the autoignition processes of binary fuels were compared at changed butanol volume fractions, chamber temperatures and equivalence ratios. The experimental results revealed that the autoignition tendency of binary fuels were decreased with the increase of butanol fraction, evidenced by the retarded heat release phasing and the two-stage heat release behavior. Among the three butanol isomers, the autoignition inhibition effects of butanol isomers on n-heptane was in the order of i-butanol > s-butanol > n-butanol. In addition, both increased chamber temperature and increased equivalence ratio could shorten the ignition and combustion delays. Specifically, increased chamber temperature monotonically elevated the peak heat release at the fuel-lean conditions, however, a turning temperature was observed in the trend of the peak heat release at the equivalence ratio of 0.64. Moreover, increased equivalence ratio significantly promoted the peak pressures and heat release rates.
