Abstract:Fe3O4@polydopamine@polyamidoamine (Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM) core-shell nanocomposites were successfully fabricated through a monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoflower synthesis, PDA modification and PAMAM grafting. The as-prepared single Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM nanocomposite possesses a high relevant saturation magnetization (M-s) (30.25 emu g(-1)), while the coercivity (H-c) (10.85 Oe) and retentivity (M-r) (0.9062 emu g(-1)) were extremely low. The obtained Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM has an adsorption capacity as high as 97.18 mg g(-1) for Cu(ii), and the adsorption process is in conformity with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the effect of pH and thermodynamics of the adsorption process is also discussed briefly.

Abstract:The organic pollutants and heavy metal ions are critical harmful substances in waste water because they destroy the ecological systems and lead diseases to animals and human beings. Unfortunately, the simultaneously remove of them in one system is still a challenge due to their different treating mechanism. Herein, a novel magnetic h-Fe3O4@Au/Polydopamine (Au/PDA) hybrid hollow nanosphere which can both absorb the potentially toxic U(VI) ions and catalyze the reduction of the 4-nitrophenol is reported. By using a simple in situ redox-oxidizing polymerization method, the h-Fe3O4 hollow nanosphere is well encapsulated by the Au/PDA hybrid shell to form the dual-functional magnetic hollow nanocomposites. Owing to the hollow interior, uniform and functional PDA coating, and high active Au nanocrystals, the final h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA hollow nanosphere possesses high potential in nanocatalysis, heavy metal ions adsorption, and drug delivery. Because of the PDA protection, the h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA nanosphere can even keep 90% activity after 7 cycling catalytic reactions on reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Similarly, the h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA exhibits a good adsorption effect for U(VI) in nuclear waste and its adsorption capability reaches to 82.9 mg.g(-1) by 6 successive adsorption-desorption experiments. Due to the facile magnetic separation, the h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA nanosphere can be easily collected by applying an external magnetic field. In summary, such a multifunctional recyclable h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA nanosphere with green and facile synthesis, easy manipulation, efficient adsorption performance and good catalytic activity possesses broad application potential in treatment of coexisting toxic water pollution.

Abstract:Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell structured nanoparticles are promising candidates for adsorption of heavy metal ions from waste water due to their high adsorption capacities and feasible recycling process. However, their practical applications have been hindered by the trade-off between the magnetic separation efficiency and durability. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of amino-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 absorbents with both high magnetic separation efficiencies and durability in strong acidic environment. Our key strategy was to use a thin but highly protective silica layer by manipulating the sol-gel chemistry. With the protection of a thin but poorly permeable silica shell, the durability of the Fe3O4 in strong acid solution was significantly enhanced while its magnetic separation efficiency was maintained. We also demonstrated the adsorption of Cu2+ from aqueous solution corresponded well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacity can be further improved by coating an additional layer of mesoporous SiO2 outside Fe3O4@SiO2. The design of highly durable magnetic absorbents without sacrificing the magnetic separation efficiency greatly facilitates the practical applications of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption of heavy metal ions.
Multifunctional Nanocomposites Fe 3 O 4 @sio 2 -EDTA for Pb(II) and Cu(II) Removal from Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:In this study, EDTA-functionalized Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@SiO2-EDTA) was prepared by silanization reaction between N-(trimethoxysilylpropyl) ethylenediamine triacetic acid (EDTA-silane) and hydroxyl groups for Pb(II) and Cu(II) removal from aqueous solutions. Fe3O4@SiO2-EDTA composites were characterized using SEM, TEM, EDX, FTIR, XPS, TGA and saturated magnetization techniques. Maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity was found to be 114.94 mg g(-1) with SiO2/EDTA molar ratio of 2.5:1. The adsorption rate was significantly fast and the equilibrium was reached within 10 min. The optimum pH was recorded to be 5.0. The maximum adsorption capacity of the studied heavy metal ions calculated by Langmuir model followed the order: Cu(II) (0.58 mmol g(-1)) > Pb(II) (0.55 mmol g(-1)) approximate to Ni(II) (0.55 mmol g(-1)) > Cd(II) (0.45 mmol g(-1)). Moreover, Pb(II) and Cu(II) adsorption capacities were not significantly affected by co-existing cations and NOM. These results suggested that this adsorbent can be considered as a promising adsorbent to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II) from wastewaters. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A novel adsorbent(FADA)was obtained by modifying Fe_3O_4/poly(acrylate methyl ester) magnetic microspheres which were prepared by suspension polymerization using divinybenzene as a crosslinker.FADA was characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction patterns(XRD),infrared spectrometry(IR)and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).And the adsorption performance of FADA toward metal ions was investigated.The experimental results showed that the diameter of the magnetic adsorbent was 35～55 μm and the mass fraction of Fe_3O_4 in the FADA was about 18%.The isotherm adsorption data agreed with the Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of Hg~(2+),Cu~(2+)and Ni~(2+)were 2.3,2.2 and 1.1 mmol/g respectively. The adsorption rate constants of Hg~(2+),Cu~(2+)and Ni~(2+)determined by Lagergrent equation were 0.023,0.034 and 0.036 min~(-1)respectively.And the regeneration and reuse performance of FAD was satisfactory.

Abstract:Herein, poly(acrylamide)-grafted cell@Fe3O4 (PAC@Fe3O4) nanocomposite was synthesized through the polymerization process of acrylamide polymers oxidative available radical in the existence of cell@Fe3O4 nanomaterial nanoparticles. Various analytical methods including FTIR, SEM, XRD, and TEM were used to characterize the material. The nanocomposite material was studied further for its ability to adsorbed Pb(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) from wastewater. To optimize adsorption process, the impact of different factors like contact time, temperature, pH, doses, and concentration was performed. Adsorption of metal ion is pH-dependent, with the highest removal efficiency occurring at high pH levels and at pH value 5; the maximum capacities of the chosen metal ions were determined for Pb(II) and Cu(II) while pH 4 for Ni(II). The maximum capacity (qm) was observed to be 313.02 mg g−1 for Pb(II), 219.33 mg g−1 for Ni(II), and 210.71 mg g−1 for Cu(II), respectively. The kinetic parameters indicate that the metal ion adsorption by PAC@Fe3O4 followed second-order kinetics, with chemical adsorption as the rate-limiting step. The nature of adsorption was endothermic and spontaneous demonstrated by positive ΔH° and negative ΔG° values.
Adsorption of heavy metals in water by modifying Fe3O4 nanoparticles with oxidized humic acid

Abstract:Magnetic nanoparticles require a protective coating to enable them to be used to adsorb heavy metals from wastewater, given their oxidation properties and instability in acidic media. Humic acid (HA) has an affinity for magnetic nanoparticles, but its adsorption capacity is low. To improve adsorption capacity, we synthesized a novel adsorbent (HA-O/Fe3O4) through chemical modification and examined its adsorption of Pb (II), Cu (II), Cd (II), and Ni (II) ions. The effects of pH competition, adsorption mechanism, isotherm, kinetics, regeneration, and stability were investigated. The HA-O/Fe3O4 exhibited faster kinetic performance (10 min), conforming to the pseudo-two kinetics equation, and the adsorption isotherm conforms to the Langmuir model with maximum adsorption capacities of 111.10, 76.92, 71.43, and 33.33 mg/g, respectively. The interaction between metal ions and functional groups of the adsorbent was further characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and the results indicated that adsorption by cation exchange at low pH and complexation at high pH. Additionally, the adsorbent was recycled four times, and the removal rate was not significantly affected. A recycling efficiency of more than 90 % indicates good sustainability and reusability. The stability test shows that the amount of organic matter and heavy metals desorbed by the adsorbent were negligible. Most importantly, at low concentrations, all four metal ions meet the industrial emission standards, and Pb (II) and Cu (II) meet the drinking water standards.
Novel magnetically separable anhydride-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA nanoparticles as effective adsorbents: synthesis, stability and recyclable adsorption performance for heavy metal ions

Abstract:In this paper, a novel adsorbent, Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA, was first prepared by the immobilization of an amine and anhydride onto magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles with polyethylenimine (PEI) and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic-dianhydride (NTDA) for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The structure of Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA was systematically investigated; the results confirmed that amine and anhydride groups were successfully covalently grafted onto the surface of Fe3O4@SiO2, which showed a homogenous core-shell structure with three layers of about 300 nm diameter (Fe3O4 core: 200 nm, nSiO2 layer: 20 nm, and PEI-NTDA layer: 20 nm). The adsorption performance of Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA NPs was evaluated for single Pb2+ and coexisting Cd2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ ions in an aqueous solution in a batch system. The amine and anhydride groups may have a synergistic effect on Pb2+ removal through electrostatic interactions and chelation; Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA NPs exhibited preferable removal of Pb2+ with maximum adsorption capacity of 285.3 mg g-1 for Pb2+ at a solution pH of 6.0, adsorbent dosage of 0.5 g L-1, initial Pb2+ concentration of 200 mg L-1 and contact time of 3 h. The adsorption mechanism conformed well to the Langmuir isotherm model, and the adsorption kinetic data were found to fit the pseudo-second order model. Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA NPs could be recovered easily from their dispersion by an external magnetic field and demonstrated good recyclability and reusability for at least 6 cycles with a high adsorption capacity above 204.5 mg g-1. The magnetic adsorbents showed high stability with a weight loss below 0.65% in the acid leaching treatment by 2 M HCl solution for 144 h. This study indicates that Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-NTDA NPs are new promising adsorbents for the effective removal of Pb2+ in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Amino-functionalized nanocomposites with a magnetic CoFe2O4 core and an amorphous SiO2 shell have been designed and synthesized. The core-shell structure was characterized by SEM, EDS, TEM, FTIR and XPS. CoFe2O4@SiO2-NH2 with a high saturated magnetization (28.09 emu g(-1)) can be easily separated under a moderate external magnetic field within one minute. In addition, the adsorption capacity of the CoFe2O4@SiO2-NH2 for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) was 170.829, 144.948 and 110.803 mg g(-1), respectively. The removal efficiency was increased from 12 to 85% with an increase in the pH from 4 to 6.5. The adsorbent can be recycled for at least four cycles with a feasible removal efficiency (85.41%). The adsorption process was fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetics and a Langmuir isotherm model. Based on the data of the present investigation, CoFe2O4@SiO2-NH2 could find potential applications in heavy metal ion wastewater treatment.

Heavy metals enter our environment through diverse resources, causing harmful effects owing to their inherent toxicity and facile migration into aqueous medium, becoming an environmental challenge. Among technologies able to remove these contaminants, the adsorption process emerges as a promising application for water treatment. Herein, functionalized silica magnetic nanoparticles using inorganic and organic have been employed as adsorbents to remove environmental hazards from wastewater effectively. Magnetic silicate core-shell amino-functionalized (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -AP) nanocomposites were synthesised using acrylic acid (AA) and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) as dual copolymer for Cd (II) removal. The characterization analysis confirmed the formed crystal nanostructure and the copolymers were chemically introduced in the magnetic silicate core-shell nanoparticle. The Cd (II) adsorption results on (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -AP) nanocomposites achieved an impressive q max of 32.50 mg/g at pH 8, adsorbent dosage of 3 g/L, and Cd (II) concentration of 100 ppm. The laboratory-scale fixed-bed column showed the breakthrough curves are flow rate independent, achieving metal removal of 99% for 405 min, at pH 8, influent ion concentration of 100 ppm, flow rate of 5 mL/min, and 1 cm bed height. The Freundlich model was the most suitable for fitting equilibrium data (R 2 adj = 0.981) indicating a multi-layer adsorption phenomenon in the heterogeneous surface sites of the (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -AP) nanocomposites. The pseudo-second-order model (R 2 adj =0.999) confirms that the adsorption rate depends on nanocomposites active sites and occurs by chemical sorption mechanism. The reusability adsorption-desorption experiments slightly decreased from 97.5% to 86.7% in the sixth cycle stability, demonstrating the material stability. Abstract:Overexploitation of nature by humans has led to an increasingly serious issue of heavy-metal water pollution. To reduce the threat of water pollution to humans and the environment, it is imperative to develop or improve the water treatment technology for heavy-metal-containing wastewater. Functionalized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 MNPs) have been widely used as effective adsorbents for the removal of heavy-metal ions from water owing to their high efficiency, low cost, selective adsorption ability, and recyclability. In this study, Fe3O4@DA-DMSA magnetic nanoparticles (FDDMs) were prepared by the functionalization of Fe3O4 MNPs with environmentally friendly dopamine (DA) and a heavy-metal detoxifying agent such as 2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) for the efficient and rapid adsorption of Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+, with maximum adsorption capacities of 187.62, 63.01, and 49.46 mg/g, respectively. FDDMs exhibited the best ability to remove Pb2+ with a maximum adsorption capacity than that of the most reported Fe3O4 MNP-related adsorbents. In actual wastewater and multi-component simulated water samples contaminated with Pb2+, Cu2+, and Cd2+, the as-prepared adsorbent maintained a good removal ability for Pb2+ with low influence by ionic strength and interfering ions, as well as exhibited an excellent selectivity. According to the results of batch experiments and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the adsorbent before and after adsorption, the adsorption mechanism of the adsorbent for the removal of heavy-metal ions mainly involves coordination and ion exchange. In addition, the adsorbent exhibited a good regeneration performance. Therefore, FDDMs can be considered as a promising adsorbent for the treatment of heavy-metal wastewater.

The crystalline phase, morphologies, particle size, chemical compositions and chemical structure of the absorbent have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The composites exhibit excellent magnetic properties with high saturated magnetization and can be separated by a magnet within 30 s, and the saturation magnetization (M-s) of CoFe2O4 NPs can be adjusted by sintering temperature, increased with the increase of the temperature. The effect of pH and reaction time on the adsorption of CoFe2O4-SiO2-NH2 for Cu (II) was examined. And the amino-functionalized CoFe2O4-SiO2 (CoFe2O4-SiO2-NH2) shows high adsorption capacity and high removal efficiency for Cu (II), Cd (II), Zn (II) and Mn (II), which makes great potential application on the heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Chitosan has several shortcomings that limit its practical application for the adsorption of heavy metals: mechanical instability, a challenging separation and recovery process, and low equilibrium capacity. This study describes the synthesis of a magnetic xanthate-modified polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan composite (XMPC) for the efficient removal and recovery of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The XMPC was synthesized from polyvinyl alcohol, chitosan, and magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles. The XMPC was characterized, and its adsorption performance in removing heavy metal ions was studied under different experimental conditions. The adsorption kinetics fit a pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. This showed that the adsorption of heavy metal ions by the XMPC is a chemical adsorption and is affected by intra-particle diffusion. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm was well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The XMPC reached adsorption equilibrium at 303 K after approximately 120 min, and the removal rate of Cd(II) ions was 307 mg/g. The composite material can be reused many times and is easily magnetically separated from the solution. This makes the XMPC a promising candidate for widespread application in sewage treatment systems for the removal of heavy metals.

Abstract:This study explores the potential of a novel carbon-coated NiFe 2 O 4 nanocomposite as an efficient nano-adsorbent for Pb(II) and Cd(II) removal from aqueous solutions. The single-step synthesis combines the advantageous properties of NiFe 2 O 4 and carbon coating. Characterization techniques, including XRD, Raman, FT-IR, FESEM, and TEM, revealed a high carbon content (53%) and a crystallite size of 36 nm. Optimization of adsorption parameters (pH, dosage, contact time) was performed using central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology (RSM). At acidic pH, the nano-adsorbent achieved removal efficiencies of 97.6% for Pb(II) and 99.5% for Cd(II). Adsorption data followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, indicating significant chemisorption. The adsorption capacities were 497.7 mg/g for Cd(II) and 325.6 mg/g for Pb(II). The NiFe 2 O 4 /C nanocomposite also demonstrated multiple reuses without significant efficiency loss.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous ferriferrous oxide (Fe3O4) was facilely synthesized via a sol-gel process accompanied by phase separation, and further graft modified by dopamine (DA) and polyamido-amine (PAMAM) to prepare macroporous Fe3O4@DA@PAMAM for heavy metal ions adsorption. Appropriate phase separation inducer (poly(acrylamide), PAA) and solvent allows the formation of iron oxide xerogels with interconnected macropores and cocontinuous skeletons. Two-step heat treatment at 200 °C for 30 min in air and then at 500 °C for 2 h in N2 atmosphere leads to the precipitation of crystalline phase, Fe3O4, with high magnetic properties, without any deterioration of the macrostructure. The macroporous Fe3O4@DA@PAMAM show a core-shell structure and high adsorption capacity for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) ions, which are promisingly used for removal of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Developing high-efficient and easy-to-recover adsorbents for the removal of toxic metals in water is imperative, although it poses a huge challenge. In this study, a sulfur-functionalized metal-organic framework was incorporated into Ca-alginate/polyacrylic acid granulates as an effective adsorbent ( abbr. CPZ-SH) for Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ removal. The physicochemical properties of the obtained CPZ-SH were determined by the integrated characterization techniques (e.g., FTIR, XRD, and SEM). The environmental effects of solution pH, typical background cations (K + , Na + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ ), and dissolved organic matter were assessed to determine the adsorption behaviors of the granulates. Time-dependent adsorption kinetics suggested that the adsorption process was dominated by an intraparticle diffusion procedure. CPZ-SH exhibited maximum adsorption capacities of 75.8 and 48.4 mg g –1 at 30 °C, and excellent adsorption reusability with Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ adsorption efficiencies over 96.0% and 85.1% after 10 cycles, respectively. The extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) demonstrated that the functional groups (thiol, carboxyl, and hydroxyl) played a crucial role in adsorption processes. The findings provided an effective strategy to construct nanostructured metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into granulates as recyclable adsorbents and enable heavy metal removal from water.

Abstract:Magnetic nanomaterials that can be easily separated and recycled due to their magnetic properties have received considerable attention in the field of water treatment. However, these nanomaterials usually tend to aggregate and alter their properties. Herein, we report an economical and environmentally friendly method for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles with core-shell structure. MnFe2O4 nanoparticles have been successfully coated with amorphous Mn-Co oxide shells. The synthesized MnFe2O4@Mn-Co oxide nanoparticles have highly negatively charged surface in aqueous solution over a wide pH range, thus preventing their aggregation and enhancing their performance for heavy metal cation removal. The adsorption isotherms are well fitted to a Langmuir adsorption model, and the maximal adsorption capacities of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) on MnFe2O4@Mn-Co oxide are 481.2, 386.2 and 345.5 mg g(-1), respectively. All the metal ions can be completely removed from the mixed metal ion solutions in a short time. Desorption studies confirm that the adsorbent can be effectively regenerated and reused.
