Abstract:Fe3O4@polydopamine@polyamidoamine (Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM) core-shell nanocomposites were successfully fabricated through a monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoflower synthesis, PDA modification and PAMAM grafting. The as-prepared single Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM nanocomposite possesses a high relevant saturation magnetization (M-s) (30.25 emu g(-1)), while the coercivity (H-c) (10.85 Oe) and retentivity (M-r) (0.9062 emu g(-1)) were extremely low. The obtained Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM has an adsorption capacity as high as 97.18 mg g(-1) for Cu(ii), and the adsorption process is in conformity with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model. Moreover, the effect of pH and thermodynamics of the adsorption process is also discussed briefly.

Abstract:A novel adsorbent(FADA)was obtained by modifying Fe_3O_4/poly(acrylate methyl ester) magnetic microspheres which were prepared by suspension polymerization using divinybenzene as a crosslinker.FADA was characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),X-ray diffraction patterns(XRD),infrared spectrometry(IR)and thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).And the adsorption performance of FADA toward metal ions was investigated.The experimental results showed that the diameter of the magnetic adsorbent was 35～55 μm and the mass fraction of Fe_3O_4 in the FADA was about 18%.The isotherm adsorption data agreed with the Langmuir model and the maximum adsorption capacity of Hg~(2+),Cu~(2+)and Ni~(2+)were 2.3,2.2 and 1.1 mmol/g respectively. The adsorption rate constants of Hg~(2+),Cu~(2+)and Ni~(2+)determined by Lagergrent equation were 0.023,0.034 and 0.036 min~(-1)respectively.And the regeneration and reuse performance of FAD was satisfactory.
In Situ Redox-Oxidation Polymerization for Magnetic Core-Shell Nanostructure with Polydopamine-Encapsulated-au Hybrid Shell

Abstract:This work reports a facile one-step method for the fabricating Fe3O4@Au/polydopamine sandwich-like core-shell nanostructure, in which the Au/polydopamine (Au/PDA) hybrid shell is obtained via an in situ redox-oxidation polymerization between the HAuCl4 and dopamine. The content of Au nanocrystals, shell thickness, and particle sizes are tunable by varying the experimental parameters. Intriguingly, this general method can be applied for different functional nanostructures such as the β-FeOOH@Au/PDA, SiO2@Au/PDA, and CNT@Au/PDA nanocomposites. A possible formation mechanism is proposed and it is found that the surface interaction plays a key role in determining the final nanostructure. The as-prepared Fe3O4@Au/PDA exhibited eminent catalytic activity on the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Since the external PDA shell prevents the Au nanocrystals from leaching during the reduction, the cycling activity has been maintained as high as 95% after seven times of catalytic reaction.
Design of Magnetic Nanoparticles with High Magnetic Separation Efficiencies and Durability for Cu2+ Adsorption

Abstract:Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell structured nanoparticles are promising candidates for adsorption of heavy metal ions from waste water due to their high adsorption capacities and feasible recycling process. However, their practical applications have been hindered by the trade-off between the magnetic separation efficiency and durability. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of amino-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 absorbents with both high magnetic separation efficiencies and durability in strong acidic environment. Our key strategy was to use a thin but highly protective silica layer by manipulating the sol-gel chemistry. With the protection of a thin but poorly permeable silica shell, the durability of the Fe3O4 in strong acid solution was significantly enhanced while its magnetic separation efficiency was maintained. We also demonstrated the adsorption of Cu2+ from aqueous solution corresponded well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacity can be further improved by coating an additional layer of mesoporous SiO2 outside Fe3O4@SiO2. The design of highly durable magnetic absorbents without sacrificing the magnetic separation efficiency greatly facilitates the practical applications of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:We report a new method to synthesize magnetically responsive Fe3O4@polyaniline@Au nanocomposites. The superparamagnetic Fe3O4@polyaniline with well-defined core/shell nanostructure has been synthesized via an ultrasound-assisted in situ surface polymerization method. The negatively charged Au nanoparticles with a diameter of about 4 nm have been effectively assembled onto the positively charged surface of the as-synthesized Fe3O4@polyaniline core/shell microspheres via electrostatic attraction. The morphology, phase composition, and crystallinity of the as-prepared nanocomposites have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). The central Fe3O4 cores are superparamagnetic at room temperature with strong magnetic response to externally applied magnetic field, thus providing a convenient means for separating the nanocomposite from solution. As-prepared inorganic/organic nanocomposite can be used as a magnetically recoverable nanocatalyst for the reduction of a selected substrate.
Magnetically Separable Nanocatalyst with the Fe3O4 Core and Polydopamine-Sandwiched Au Nanocrystal Shell

Abstract:This work reports a novel Fe3O4@polydopamine/Au/polydopamine core/shell nanocomposite toward a magnetically separable nanocatalyst. Because the polydopamine (PDA) layer-sandwiched Au nanocrystals were prepared by a layer-by-layer method, the content of Au could be controlled by varying the Au shell number (such as burger-like Fe3O4@PDA/Au/PDA/Au/PDA). Fe3O4 @PDA/Au/PDA exhibited excellent catalytic activity in reducing p-nitrophenol because the substrate could penetrate the PDA shell. Owing to the protection of the PDA shell, Fe3O4@PDA/Au/PDA presented higher cyclability than Fe3O4@PDA/Au. The activity of Fe3O4@PDA/Au/PDA maintained 95% after 7 cycles, while that of Fe3O4@PDA/Au was only 61%, The detailed cycling catalytic mechanism was investigated, and it was found that the catalytic rate of Fe3O4@PDA/Au/PDA/Au/PDA was faster than that of Fe3O4@PDA/Au/PDA because of the higher Au content. Interestingly, this method could be extended for other magnetic nanocomposites with two different kinds of noble metal nanocrystals integrated within one particle, such as Fe3O4@PDA/Au/PDA/Ag/PDA and Fe3O4@PDA/Au/PDA/Pd/ PDA.

Abstract:New molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-based core-shell nanocomposite materials were successfully prepared through the self-assembly of mussel-inspired chemistry. Characterization by Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the surface of the flaked MoS2 was homogeneously coated with a thin layer of polydopamine (PDA). Dye adsorption performances of the synthesized MoS2-PDA nanocomposites were investigated at different pH values and reaction times. Compared with pure MoS2 nanosheets, the obtained core-shell nanocomposites showed elevated adsorption performances and high stability, indicating their potential applications in wastewater treatment and composite materials.

Abstract:Poly(amindoamine) (PAMAM) was grafted onto magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles to produce PAMAM grafted Fe3O4 (shortened as Mag-PAMAM). Mag-PAMAM coordinated with Cu(II) to form the supported Cu(II)–PAMAM complex (shortened as Cu(II)/Mag-PAMAM). The stoichiometric ratio between amine groups in Mag-PAMAM and Cu(II) was found to be 4. The Cu(II)/Mag-PAMAM complexes were employed to catalyze the oxidative polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol (DMP) in water. The Cu(II)/Mag-PAMAM complexes demonstrated the excellent selectivity of C–O/C–C coupling and reactivity to form poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO). After polymerization, the Cu(II)/Mag-PAMAM complexes were recovered by an external magnetic field and used repeatedly in the next run with additional Mag-PAMAM and copper ions. After three runs of oxidative polymerization of DMP, the recovery ratio of the catalyst was about 95% and the yield of PPO maintained a relatively high value.

Abstract:With the ever-increasing challenge of heavy metal pollution, the imperative for developing highly efficient adsorbents has become apparent to remove metal ions from wastewater completely. In this study, we introduce a novel magnetic core-shell adsorbent, Fe3O4@UiO-66-PDA. It features a polydopamine (PDA) modified zirconium-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66) synthesized through a simple solvothermal method. The adsorbent boasts a unique core-shell architecture with a high specific surface area, abundant micropores, and remarkable thermal stability. The adsorption capabilities of six metal ions (Fe3+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, and Cd2+) were systematically investigated, guided by the theory of hard and soft acids and bases. Among these, three representative metal ions (Fe3+, Pb2+, and Hg2+) were scrutinized in detail. The activated Fe3O4@UiO-66-PDA exhibited exceptional adsorption capacities for these metal ions, achieving impressive values of 97.99 mg/g, 121.42 mg/g, and 130.72 mg/g, respectively, at pH 5.0. Moreover, the adsorbent demonstrated efficient recovery from aqueous solution using an external magnet, maintaining robust adsorption efficiency (>80%) and stability even after six cycles. To delve deeper into the optimized adsorption of Hg2+, density functional theory (DFT) analysis was employed, revealing an adsorption energy of -2.61 eV for Hg2+. This notable adsorption capacity was primarily attributed to electron interactions and coordination effects. This study offers valuable insights into metal ion adsorption facilitated, by magnetic metal-organic framework (MOF) materials.

Abstract:In recent decades, magnetic nanomaterials with fast separation and recyclable performance have raised great interest for broad applications in catalysis, protein separation and immunodiagnostics. In this paper, Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles with a size of (350 ± 50) nm were produced by the solvothermal method. Then, the nanoparticles were coated with a shell made of 3-aminophenol-formaldehyde (APF) resin to prevent agglomeration. The reaction was very rapid, and core–shell Fe 3 O 4 @APF nanospheres were produced by polycondensation within 10 min. Besides, the thickness of the APF shell could be easily adjusted in the range of 10–200 nm by controlling the reaction time and the concentration of 3-aminophenol and formaldehyde. In particular, the APF layer could also act as an effective carrier and reducing agent to capture hundreds of well-dispersed Ag nanoparticles for the abundant hydroxyl groups, obtaining sesame-ball-like Fe 3 O 4 @APF@Ag nanocomposites. The structure of sesame-ball can prevent silver nanoparticles from agglomerating, and Fe 3 O 4 core could provide strong magnetism. The magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @APF@Ag nanomaterials could catalyze the reduction of organic dyes (4-NP, MB and RhB), and the catalyst possessed high activity, with the conversion of dyes remaining above 90% within 3 min after 7 cycles.

Abstract:In this study, the functional core-shell structure Fe3O4@PDA microspheres with strong saturation magnetism was successfully prepared by in-situ polymerization method. The microstructures, morphologies and chemical components of obtained samples were systematically analyzed. The maximum removal capacity of Fe3O4@PDA microspheres towards Cd(II) was 296.4 mg.g(-1) at 298 K. The removal process of Cd(II) conformed pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. In addition, the significant effects of pH and ionic strength on the adsorption performance were also researched by batch adsorption experiment. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of Fe3O4@PDA remained at a relatively high level after five cycles, which implied that it possessed high reusability as an adsorbent. Therefore, the prepared Fe3O4@PDA microspheres could be recognized as excellent adsorbents for Cd(II) removal from polluted water. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this study, a novel composite material with a core–shell structure, Fe 3 O 4 @PPy@SDBS, was synthesized through a combination of hydrothermal, in situ polymerization, and surface modification methods. The primary objective was the removal of methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) dyes from aqueous solutions. The influence of adsorbent type, time, initial adsorbent concentration, and temperature on the adsorption behavior of MB and MG was comprehensively investigated. The experimental results revealed that the adsorption kinetics of both MB and MG adhered to the pseudo-second order kinetic model, while the isotherm data were best described by the Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, the adsorption process exhibited characteristics of a spontaneous heat-driven reaction. The maximum adsorption capacities were determined as 124.07 mg/g for MB and 73.10 mg/g for MG, respectively. Remarkably, even after undergoing five desorption-adsorption cycles, the removal efficiencies for MB and MG remained above 80% and 90% respectively. These promising outcomes were attributed to the collaborative effects of electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions mediated by PPy and SDBS, in addition to the magnetic properties imparted by Fe 3 O 4 . Consequently, the Fe 3 O 4 @PPy@SDBS composite exhibited high potential as a proficient and reusable adsorbent. Beyond its efficient removal capabilities, the incorporation of magnetic properties and diverse adsorption mechanisms within these composites presents compelling opportunities for advancements in adsorption and separation processes.

Abstract:The organic pollutants and heavy metal ions are critical harmful substances in waste water because they destroy the ecological systems and lead diseases to animals and human beings. Unfortunately, the simultaneously remove of them in one system is still a challenge due to their different treating mechanism. Herein, a novel magnetic h-Fe3O4@Au/Polydopamine (Au/PDA) hybrid hollow nanosphere which can both absorb the potentially toxic U(VI) ions and catalyze the reduction of the 4-nitrophenol is reported. By using a simple in situ redox-oxidizing polymerization method, the h-Fe3O4 hollow nanosphere is well encapsulated by the Au/PDA hybrid shell to form the dual-functional magnetic hollow nanocomposites. Owing to the hollow interior, uniform and functional PDA coating, and high active Au nanocrystals, the final h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA hollow nanosphere possesses high potential in nanocatalysis, heavy metal ions adsorption, and drug delivery. Because of the PDA protection, the h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA nanosphere can even keep 90% activity after 7 cycling catalytic reactions on reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Similarly, the h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA exhibits a good adsorption effect for U(VI) in nuclear waste and its adsorption capability reaches to 82.9 mg.g(-1) by 6 successive adsorption-desorption experiments. Due to the facile magnetic separation, the h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA nanosphere can be easily collected by applying an external magnetic field. In summary, such a multifunctional recyclable h-Fe3O4@Au/PDA nanosphere with green and facile synthesis, easy manipulation, efficient adsorption performance and good catalytic activity possesses broad application potential in treatment of coexisting toxic water pollution.

Abstract:The effect of polydopamine (PDA) modification on aminated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 )/graphite oxide (GO)/β-cyclodextrin polymer cross-linked by citric acid (CDP-CA) composites were studied for the removal of a cationic dye (methylene blue, MB) and an anionic dye (Congo red, CR) from waters. The micro-structural and magnetic characterizations confirmed the successful preparation of Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 /GO/CDP-CA and PDA/Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 /GO/CDP-CA composites. The maximum MB and CR adsorption capacities of Fe 3 O 4 -NH 2 /GO/CDP-CA were 75 mg/g and 104 mg/g, respectively, while the corresponding amounts for PDA/Fe 3 O4-NH 2 /GO/CDP-CA composite were 195 mg/g and 64 mg/g, respectively. The dye sorption behaviors of these two composites were explained by their corresponding surface-charged properties according to the measured zeta potential results. Moreover, the high saturation magnetizations and the stable dye removal rate in the adsorption–desorption cycles indicated the good recyclability and reusability of the fabricated composites.

Abstract:This work describes fabrication of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 core–shell nanoparticles functionalized with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and its application for the removal of Cu(П) and Cd(П) ions. Surface chemistry and morphology during functionalization of Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 NPs were evaluated utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, vibration sample magnetometer, transmission electron microscope, field emission scanning electron microscope, and dynamic light scattering. The performance of the PVA-modified magnetic nanoparticles for Cu(П) and Cd(П) ions removal was evaluated by changing five process variables: contact time of adsorbent, temperature, pH, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration. The highest removal efficiency was observed at a pH value of 7, an adsorbent dose of 15 mg, an initial concentration of 0.5 mmol/L, and a contact time of 25 min for Cu(II), while these values are 7, 15 mg, 0.4 mmol/L, and 20 min for Cd(II), respectively. The adsorption equilibrium is well explained by Langmuir adsorption isotherms which namely monolayer adsorption. The adsorption isotherm studies of the novel adsorbent in removing target ions from wastewater showed that the maximum adsorption amounts of Cu(П) and Cd(П) were 1.57 and 0.99 mmol/g at 35 °C. According to the calculated parameters and fitting model, the kinetics adsorption data are well fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model which suggests that the main rate-determining step was chemisorption's. According to the results, the prepared composite possesses excellent adsorption efficiency to be applied for the preconcentration of target heavy metal ions in the field of water treatment. The new adsorbent is completely separated from the aqueous solution under external magnetic field for five consecutive cycles without significant loss of activity.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous ferriferrous oxide (Fe3O4) was facilely synthesized via a sol-gel process accompanied by phase separation, and further graft modified by dopamine (DA) and polyamido-amine (PAMAM) to prepare macroporous Fe3O4@DA@PAMAM for heavy metal ions adsorption. Appropriate phase separation inducer (poly(acrylamide), PAA) and solvent allows the formation of iron oxide xerogels with interconnected macropores and cocontinuous skeletons. Two-step heat treatment at 200 °C for 30 min in air and then at 500 °C for 2 h in N2 atmosphere leads to the precipitation of crystalline phase, Fe3O4, with high magnetic properties, without any deterioration of the macrostructure. The macroporous Fe3O4@DA@PAMAM show a core-shell structure and high adsorption capacity for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) ions, which are promisingly used for removal of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Uniform Fe3O4 nanospheres with a diameter of 100 nm were rapidly prepared using a microwave solvothermal method. Then Fe304/polypyrrole (PPy) composite nanospheres with well-defined core/shell structures were obtained through chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of Fe3O4; the average thickness of the coating shell was about 25 nm. Furthermore, by means of electrostatic interactions, plentiful gold nanoparticles with a diameter of 15 nm were assembled on the surface of Fe3O4/PPy to get Fe3O4/PPy/Au core/shell/shell structure. The morphology, structure, and composition of the products were characterized by transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The resultant nanocomposites not only have the magnetism of Fe3O4 nanoparticles that make the nanocomposites easily controlled by an external magnetic field but also have the good conductivity and excellent electrochemical and catalytic properties of PPy and Au nanoparticles. Furthermore, the nanocomposites showed excellent electrocatalytic activities to biospecies such as ascorbic acid (AA).
