Abstract:In order to investigate the accuracy of metal-oxide arrester (MOA) simulation models for evaluating the energy absorbed in MOA,the non-linear resistance model and frequency-dependent models, including IEEE model,Pinceti model and Fernandez model, were adopted to evaluate the residual voltages and energy absorption in metal-oxide varistors (MOVs).Three types of impulse currents, including standard 8/20μs lightning current, switching current of 30/60μs,and steep current with front time about 1μs,were considered in the analysis. Then the simulation results were compared with the experimentally measured results. It is shown that the IEEE model could evaluate the residual voltages on low-voltage MOVs accurately, while the Pinceti model could only be used under 8/20μs current. As for the evaluation of the energy absorption in MOVs used for transmission and distribution arresters, only the non-linear resistance model and Fernandez model have high accuracy under 8/20μs current. However, the non-linear resistance model is more accurate in evaluating the energy absorption in low-voltage MOVs than the frequency-dependent models. As for evaluating the energy absorption in high-voltage MOVs,the optimization parameters for non-linear resistance A0 and A1 in frequency-dependent models are necessary.
