Abstract:The Earth's magnetosphere is a dynamic and continuously changing system, the shape of which changes under the influence of the interplanetary medium: the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field. Variations in the parameters of the solar wind and the interplanetary magnetic field can be a trigger for the development of geomagnetic storms in the magnetosphere, which result in particle precipitations in the oval region and strong variations in particle fluxes of the Earth's radiation belts. The magnetosphere can be divided into internal and external parts and the auroral magnetosphere located between them.

Abstract:The behavior of the main parameters of the interplanetary medium, cosmic ray variations, and geomagnetic activity as magnetic clouds pass the Earth (466 events from 1967 to 2021) was studied. Time distributions of these parameters during magnetic clouds passage are considered. It is shown that the maximum values of the solar wind velocity, interplanetary magnetic field strength, and geomagnetic activity indices are more often recorded in the front part of the magnetic cloud, while the minimum values of the temperature index, density, and equatorial component of cosmic ray anisotropy can be observed in any part of the studied structure.

Abstract:We present a study on the dynamical variations of geoelectric fields E during the intense geomagnetic storm of April 23–24, 2023. The storm is caused by the interplanetary counterpart of a coronal mass ejection erupted from the Sun in association with an M1.7 X-ray flare. The GeoElectric Dynamic Mapping (GEDMap) code is applied to develop spatial E maps using magnetometer data from 29 observatories distributed across northern Europe. The code has been applied during local nighttime and morningtime intense substorms which occurred during the storm main phase. The maps show intensifications and strong variability of the E -fields during the substorm events. In particular, the morningtime event is associated with a significant variability in the E -field direction. Using the computed E -fields, we determined geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) at the sub-auroral station Mäntsälä. The modeled GIC values exhibit significant correlation (correlation coefficients ) with the observed values. The performed E -field mapping provides a basis for the further determination of GICs in selected locations not covered by magnetometers and can be useful in understanding the GIC variability during magnetic storms and substorms.

Classification of Enhanced Geoeffectiveness Resulting from High-Speed Solar Wind Streams Compressing Slower Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections

Abstract:High-speed solar wind streams (HSSs) interact with the preceding ambient solar wind to form Stream Interaction Regions (SIRs), which are a primary source of recurrent geomagnetic storms. However, HSSs may also encounter and subsequently interact with Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs). In particular, the impact of the interaction between slower ICMEs and faster HSSs, represents an unexplored area that requires further in-depth investigation. This specific interaction can give rise to unexpected geomagnetic storm signatures, diverging from the conventional expectations of individual SIR events sharing similar HSS properties. Our study presents a comprehensive analysis of solar wind data spanning from 1996 to 2020, capturing 23 instances where such encounters led to geomagnetic storms ($SymH$ $< -30$ nT). We determined that interaction events between preceding slower ICMEs and faster HSSs possess the potential to induce substantial storm activity, statistically nearly doubling the geoeffective impact in comparison to SIR storm events. The increase in the amplitude of the $SymH$ index appears to result from heightened dynamic pressure, often coupled with the concurrent amplification of the CMEs rearward $|B|$ and/or $B_z$ components.

Abstract:We examined rapid variations in the electron zebra stripe patterns, specifically at L = 1.5, over a three‐month duration, using twin Van Allen Probes within Earth's inner magnetosphere. During geomagnetically quiet intervals, these stripes exhibit a peak‐to‐valley ratio (Δj) ∼1.25 in detrended electron fluxes. However, during geomagnetic storms, they became highly prominent, with Δj > 2.5. The correlation between Δj and net field‐aligned currents (FACs) is observed to be high (0.70). Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation results indicate that the westward electric field at midnight at low latitudes in the deep inner magnetosphere correlates well with net FACs. An increase in net FACs could amplify the dawn‐to‐dusk electric field in the deep inner magnetosphere, thereby causing the inward transport of electrons. Given that FACs are linked to the interaction between solar wind and the magnetosphere, our findings emphasize the importance of solar wind‐magnetosphere coupling in the deeper regions of the inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:In May 2024, the scientific community observed intense solar eruptions that resulted in an extreme geomagnetic storm and auroral extension, highlighting the need to document and quantify these events. This study mainly focuses on their quantification. The source active region (AR 13664) evolved from 113 to 2761 millionths of the solar hemisphere between 4 May and 14 May 2024. AR 13664's magnetic free energy surpassed 1033 erg on 7 May 2024, triggering 12 X-class flares. Multiple interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) came out from this AR, accelerating solar energetic particles toward Earth. At least four ICMEs seemingly piled up to disturb the interplanetary space, according to the satellite data and interplanetary scintillation data. The shock arrival at 17:05 UT on 10 May 2024 significantly compressed the magnetosphere down to ~ 5.04 R_E, and triggered a deep Forbush decrease. GOES satellite data and ground-based neutron monitors confirmed a ground-level enhancement from 2 UT to 10 UT on 11 May 2024. The ICMEs induced extreme geomagnetic storms, peaking at a Dst index of -412 nT at 2 UT on 11 May 2024, marking the sixth-largest storm since 1957. The AE and AL indices showed extreme auroral extensions that located the AE/AL stations into the polar cap. We gathered auroral records at that time and reconstructed the equatorward boundary of the visual auroral oval to 29.8° invariant latitude. We compared naked-eye and camera auroral visibility, providing critical caveats on their difference. We also confirmed global enhancements of storm-enhanced density of the ionosphere.

Abstract:Magnetic storm, ionospheric storm, atmospheric storm, and electrical storm are the components of a geospace storm resulting from a solar storm. In the literature, the main attention is paid to the analysis of severe and extreme geospace storms. It is these storms that have the greatest impact on the Earth–atmosphere–ionosphere–magnetosphere system. They are most dangerous for space-based and ground-based technological systems. Such storms have a significant impact on human well-being and health. Minor and moderate storms are much less studied than severe and extreme ones. There are good reasons to believe that such storms can have some impact on the systems and people. It is important that the frequency of occurrence of moderate storms is much greater than the frequency of occurrence of severe storms. All this determined the relevance of this work, which consists in the study of magnetic disturbances that arise during moderate geospace storms, which receive undeservedly little attention. The purpose of this paper is to analyze on a global scale the temporal variations of geomagnetic field components during moderate magnetic storms on April 28–29 and May 1–2, 2023. The latitudinal dependence of the geomagnetic field components temporal variations during two moderate magnetic storms in April–May 2023 and on reference days was analyzed on a global scale using the data of the global network of Intermagnet stations. The limits of fluctuations in the level of the geomagnetic field under quiet conditions and during moderate storms were estimated. The range of variations in the geomagnetic field level under quiet conditions decreased from 200–260 to 30–50 nT with decreasing geographic latitude. During the storms, these limits increased 1.3–2.1 times. The variations in the level of components at stations equidistant from the equator were close. This is true for both the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. The fluctuations of the geomagnetic field level at the stations operating approximately at the same latitude but in different hemispheres were also close.

Influence of Solar Wind High‐Speed Streams on the Brazilian Low‐Latitude Ionosphere During the Descending Phase of Solar Cycle 24

Abstract:This study investigates the Brazilian low‐latitude ionospheric response to CIR/HSS‐driven geomagnetic storms during the declining phase of solar cycle 24, from 2016 to 2017. In this period the geomagnetic storms were mostly moderate, SymHmin ≈ −72 nT, AEmax ≈ 1580 nT, Vswmax ≈ 690 km/s and lasted, on average, for 6 days. We analyze the variations in Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) at three representative regions: bele, over the equatorial region; boav and cuib, at the northern and southern crests of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly. Our findings reveal the role of High‐Speed Solar Wind Streams and Corotating Interaction Region—driven geomagnetic storms. The VTEC intensifications were up to 30 TECu, during the daytime and nighttime. Additionally, three categories of nighttime enhancements were observed and analyzed with distinct characteristics and levels of pre‐reversal strengthening; Depletions up to 20 TECu also occurred during the day and nighttime. The delay between the storm commencement and the positive and negative variations were, on average, 7 and 20 hours, respectively. We discuss the Prompt Penetration Electric Fields and Disturbance Dynamo Electric Fields following the magnetic reconnection between Earth's and interplanetary magnetic field, using observational data and modeling. Furthermore, this study presents catalogs of low‐latitude ionospheric storms, providing detailed information for space weather applications and ionospheric modeling.
