Abstract:Abstract. Radiation belt electron flux dropouts are a kind of drastic variation in the Earth's magnetosphere, understanding of which is of both scientific and societal importance. Using electron flux data from a group of 14 satellites, we report multi-satellite simultaneous observations of magnetopause and atmospheric losses of radiation belt electrons during an event of intense solar wind dynamic pressure pulse. When the pulse occurred, magnetopause and atmospheric loss could take effect concurrently contributing to the electron flux dropout. Losses through the magnetopause were observed to be efficient and significant at L ≳ 5, owing to the magnetopause intrusion into L ∼ 6 and outward radial diffusion associated with sharp negative gradient in electron phase space density. Losses to the atmosphere were directly identified from the precipitating electron flux observations, for which pitch angle scattering by plasma waves could be mainly responsible. While the convection and substorm injections strongly enhanced the energetic electron fluxes up to hundreds of keV, they could delay other than avoid the occurrence of electron flux dropout at these energies. It is demonstrated that the pulse-time radiation belt electron flux dropout depends strongly on the specific interplanetary and magnetospheric conditions and that losses through the magnetopause and to the atmosphere and enhancements of substorm injection play an essential role in combination, which should be incorporated as a whole into future simulations for comprehending the nature of radiation belt electron flux dropouts.

Abstract:Vlasiator is a high‐performance ion‐kinetic code that is now conducting 3D hybrid‐Vlasov simulations of the global magnetosphere. We use Vlasiator to investigate the impact of a pressure pulse with southward‐oriented magnetic field on the Earth's magnetosphere. The simulation driving parameters are comparable to conditions that have led to geomagnetic storms. Our pressure pulse simulation reproduces many physical effects, namely the expansion of the auroral oval, the development of field‐aligned currents, enhanced particle precipitation near the open/closed field line boundary, and compression of Earth's magnetopause. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the hybrid‐Vlasov approach for moderate driving conditions. Our investigation of the time‐dependent magnetopause compression motivates a generalization of the existing theory. Specifically, we find that accounting for the finite transition time of the solar wind dynamic pressure improves the model's description of the magnetopause oscillations.

Abstract:Dayside transients, such as hot flow anomalies, foreshock bubbles, magnetosheath jets, flux transfer events, and surface waves, are frequently observed upstream from the bow shock, in the magnetosheath, and at the magnetopause. They play a significant role in the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. Foreshock transient phenomena, associated with variations in the solar wind dynamic pressure, deform the magnetopause, and in turn generates field-aligned currents (FACs) connected to the auroral ionosphere. Solar wind dynamic pressure variations and transient phenomena at the dayside magnetopause drive magnetospheric ultra low frequency (ULF) waves, which can play an important role in the dynamics of Earth’s radiation belts. These transient phenomena and their geoeffects have been investigated using coordinated in-situ spacecraft observations, spacecraft-borne imagers, ground-based observations, and numerical simulations. Cluster, THEMIS, Geotail, and MMS multi-mission observations allow us to track the motion and time evolution of transient phenomena at different spatial and temporal scales in detail, whereas ground-based experiments can observe the ionospheric projections of transient magnetopause phenomena such as waves on the magnetopause driven by hot flow anomalies or flux transfer events produced by bursty reconnection across their full longitudinal and latitudinal extent. Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), hybrid, and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are powerful tools to simulate the dayside transient phenomena. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the present understanding of dayside transient phenomena at Earth and other planets, their geoeffects, and outstanding questions.
Progress in the Studies on Earth's Magnetospheric Responses to the Solar Wind Dynamic Pressure Pulses

Abstract:The solar wind dynamic pressure pulses(DPPs) are a kind of important interplanetary small-scale disturbance structure.When it interacts with the magnetosphere,it will cause global strong disturbances in the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling system that affect almost all major plasma regions and current systems in the magnetosphere and ionosphere.In this paper, the recent progress in the studies on the responses of the magnetosphere in multiple spatial and temporal scale to the solar wind dynamic pressure pulses is summarized,focused on the observations and the physical models.In addition,we report the new observations of TC-1,when the spacecraft is located in the near-Earth magnetotail plasma sheet,that the interplanetary shock directly drives the enhancements of the plasma oscillations in the magnetotail plasma sheet.The shocks are observed by WIND on November 07,2004.Prior to and after the shock,the IMF is either weakly southward or northward.The responses of the plasma sheet to the two shocks are intense and much similar.When the shock interacts with the magnetosphere,the magnetic field impulsively increases 12 min after the geomagnetic field sudden impulse(SI) judged from the Sym-H index change,and the magnetic field line is stretched.On the other hand,all of the ion density,the ion temperature,and the velocity of ion flow in the plasma sheet increase. Interestingly,quasi-periodical oscillations of the ion flow are suddenly enhanced,and the plasma flow is basically perpendicular to the local magnetic field.The responses of the magnetic field and the plasma are nearly simultaneous.The responses in the plasma sheet are probably caused by the lateral compression due to the dynamic pressure enhancement downstream the shock when the shock propagates antisunward in the magnetosheath.

Dayside Magnetospheric and Ionospheric Responses to Solar Wind Pressure Increase: Multispacecraft and Ground Observations

Abstract:We provide in situ observations of the transient phenomena in the dayside magnetosphere during the preliminary impulse (PI) and main impulse (MI) event on 30 September 2008. The PI and MI geomagnetic signals are induced by twin traveling convection vortices with opposite polarities in the equivalent ionospheric currents due to a sudden increase of the solar wind dynamic pressure. The two PI-associated ionospheric current vortices centered at similar to 07 magnetic local time (MLT), 67 degrees magnetic latitude (MLAT) in the dawnside and similar to 14 MLT, 73 degrees MLAT in the duskside, respectively. The dawnside MI current vortex centered at similar to 8 degrees MLAT and 6 MLT, while the duskside vortex center was traveling poleward from similar to 67 degrees MLAT to similar to 75 degrees MLAT at a speed of similar to.6-7.4 km/s around 14 MLT. It is found that both dawnside PI-and MI-related current vortices were azimuthally seen up to 4 MLT. Following the magnetosphere sudden impulse, a clockwise flow vortex with a radial scale larger than 3 RE, associated with positive field-aligned current (FAC), was observed by Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) spacecraft in the outer dayside magnetosphere. The flow vortex expanded and traveled tailward in the magnetosphere, also being reproduced with global MHD simulations. Based on both observation and simulation technique, we show that the MI-related FACs are correlated with the large-scale flow vortex. The PI FACs are partially provided by the mode conversion of fast mode waves into the Alfven waves near the equatorial plane, while most of it may be generated at a higher-latitude region in the magnetosphere.

The special issue has a total of five accepted manuscripts. Their topic 17 of research spans from evaluating the impact of sudden commencement on ionospheric currents, solar wind 18 pressure control of EMIC waves in the magnetosphere, sudden changes in the magnetosphere due to IMF 19 By polarity changes, solar wind Mach number influence on Dst index, and magnetosphere interaction with 20 isolated Co-rotating Interaction Regions over four consecutive solar rotations. Abstract:Dayside transients are frequently observed upstream from the bow shock (such as hot flow anomalies, foreshock cavities, and foreshock bubbles) and at the magnetopause (such as flux transfer events and surface waves). They play a significant role in the mass, energy, and momentum transport from the solar wind into the magnetosphere and impact the whole magnetosphere–ionosphere system. The Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) Transient Phenomena at the Magnetopause and Bow Shock and Their Ground Signatures focus group has employed both observations and simulations to investigate transient phenomena at the magnetopause and bow shock and their impacts on the magnetosphere–ionosphere. There are over 80 peer-reviewed papers (only those presented in this focus group at GEM were included) and 8 PhD and MS theses of the students who were actively working on the focus group topics.

Abstract:An interplanetary shock can abruptly compress the magnetosphere, excite magnetospheric waves and field-aligned currents, and cause a ground magnetic response known as a sudden commencement (SC). However, the transient (<∼1 min) response of the ionosphere-thermosphere system during an SC has been little studied due to limited temporal resolution in previous investigations. Here, we report observations of a global reversal of ionospheric vertical plasma motion during an SC on 24 October 2011 using ∼6 s resolution Super Dual Auroral Radar Network ground scatter data. The dayside ionosphere suddenly moved downward during the magnetospheric compression due to the SC, lasting for only ∼1 min before moving upward. By contrast, the post-midnight ionosphere briefly moved upward then moved downward during the SC. Simulations with a coupled geospace model suggest that the reversed E ⃗ × B ⃗ vertical drift is caused by a global reversal of ionospheric zonal electric field induced by magnetospheric compression during the SC.

Abstract:We report the in situ observation of a plasma vortex induced by a solar wind dynamic pressure enhancement in the nightside plasma sheet using multipoint measurements from Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) satellites. The vortex has a scale of 5–10 Re and propagates several Re downtail, expanding while propagating. The features of the vortex are consistent with the prediction of the Sibeck (1990) model, and the vortex can penetrate deep (~8 Re ) in the dawn‐dusk direction and couple to field line oscillations. Global magnetohydrodynamics simulations are carried out, and it is found that the simulation and observations are consistent with each other. Data from THEMIS ground magnetometer stations indicate a poleward propagating vortex in the ionosphere, with a rotational sense consistent with the existence of the vortex observed in the magnetotail.

Abstract:The near-Earth space environment is greatly affected by transient perturbations in the solar wind. One of the most obvious and important perturbations are solar wind dynamic pressure changes, which are sometimes positive (increasing with time) and sometimes negative (decreasing with time). When they arrive at the Earth, we can see the compression of the magnetosphere after the dynamic pressure increase, and the expansion of the magnetosphere after the dynamic pressure decrease. Previous and recent work have shown that they may produce vortices, ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves, and aurorae in the magnetosphere and the ionosphere. In this work, we will review the previous and recent studies on these processes and seek to build a global picture of these processes from both observation and simulation.

Abstract:Using the solar wind data obtained from OMNI web, we find 1778 dynamic pressure enhancement events during Mar 2007 to Dec 2012. Then we check the responses of Magnetospheric plasma flows to these events and find 64 responses show clear sudden impulse (SI) signatures from THEMIS observations. We superpose the initial responses of the flows in one plot to find two flow vortices exist at two sides of the near earth magnetotail respectively, which was not observed in-situ before. There are some ULF wave observations after initial responses.

Abstract:The sudden enhancements of magnetic strength, named magnetic peaks (MPs), are often observed in the magnetosheath of magnetized planets. They are usually identified as flux ropes (FRs) or magnetic mirror mode structures. Previous studies of MPs are mostly on the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scale. In this study, an electron scale MP is reported in the Earth magnetosheath. We present a typical case with a scale of similar to 7 electron gyroradii and a duration of similar to 0.18 s. A strong magnetic disturbance and associated electrical current are detected. Electron vortex is found perpendicular to the magnetic field line and is self-consist with the peak. We use multipoint spacecraft techniques to determine the propagation velocity of the MP structure and find that the magnetic peak does propagate relative to the plasma (ion) flow. This is very different from the magnetic mirror mode that does not propagate relative to the plasma flow. Furthermore, we developed an efficient method that can effectively distinguish "magnetic bottle like" and "FRs like" structures. The MP presented in this study is identified as magnetic bottle like type. The mechanism to generate the electron scale magnetic bottle like structure is still unclear, suggesting that new theory needs to be developed to understand such small-scale phenomena.
Small-scale magnetic flux emergence preceding a chain of energetic solar atmospheric events

Abstract:Advancements in instrumentation have revealed a multitude of small-scale extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) events in the solar atmosphere and considerable effort is currently undergoing to unravel them. Our aim is to employ high-resolution and high-sensitivity magnetograms to gain a detailed understanding of the magnetic origin of such phenomena. We used coordinated observations from the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST), the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph ( and the Solar Dynamics Observatory ( to analyze an ephemeral magnetic flux emergence episode and the following chain of small-scale energetic events. These unique observations clearly link these phenomena together. The high-resolution (0 $) magnetograms obtained with SST/CRISP allowed us to reliably measure the magnetic field at the photosphere and to detect the emerging bipole that caused the subsequent eruptive atmospheric events. Notably, this small-scale emergence episode remains indiscernible in the lower resolution SDO/HMI magnetograms (0 $). We report the appearance of a dark bubble in related to the emerging bipole, a sign of the canonical expanding magnetic dome predicted in flux emergence simulations. Evidence of reconnection are also found, first through an Ellerman bomb and later by the launch of a surge next to a UV burst. The UV burst exhibits a weak EUV counterpart in the coronal SDO/AIA channels. By calculating the differential emission measure (DEM), its plasma is shown to reach a temperature beyond 1 MK and to have densities between the upper chromosphere and transition region. Our study showcases the importance of high-resolution magnetograms in revealing the mechanisms that trigger phenomena such as EBs, UV bursts, and surges. This could hold implications for small-scale events similar to those recently reported in the EUV using Solar Orbiter. The finding of temperatures beyond 1 MK in the UV burst plasma strongly suggests that we are examining analogous features. Therefore, we recommend caution when drawing conclusions from full-disk magnetograms that lack the necessary resolution to reveal their true magnetic origin.
