Abstract:In [BS] Babson and Steingrimsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. Let $f_{\tau;r}(n)$ be the number of $1\mn3\mn2$-avoiding permutations on $n$ letters that contain exactly $r$ occurrences of $\tau$, where $\tau$ a generalized pattern on $k$ letters. Let $F_{\tau;r}(x)$ and $F_\tau(x,y)$ be the generating functions defined by $F_{\tau;r}(x)=\sum_{n\geq0} f_{\tau;r}(n)x^n$ and $F_\tau(x,y)=\sum_{r\geq0}F_{\tau;r}(x)y^r$. We find an explicit expression for $F_\tau(x,y)$ in the form of a continued fraction for where $\tau$ given as a generalized pattern; $\tau=12\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $\tau=21\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $\tau=123... k$, or $\tau=k... 321$. In particularly, we find $F_\tau(x,y)$ for any $\tau$ generalized pattern of length 3. This allows us to express $F_{\tau;r}(x)$ via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, and continued fractions.

Uniform Recurrence in the Motzkin Numbers and Related Sequences mod $p$

Abstract:Many famous integer sequences including the Catalan numbers and the Motzkin numbers can be expressed in the form $ConstantTermOf\left[P(x)^nQ(x)\right]$ for Laurent polynomials $Q$, and symmetric Laurent trinomials $P$. In this paper we characterize the primes for which sequences of this form are uniformly recurrent modulo $p$. For all other primes, we show that $0$ has density $1$. This will be accomplished by showing that the study of these sequences mod $p$ can be reduced to the study of the generalized central trinomial coefficients, which are well-behaved mod $p$.

Enumeration of flattened $k$-Stirling permutations with respect to descents

Abstract:A $k$-Stirling permutation of order $n$ is said to be "flattened" if the leading terms of its increasing runs are in ascending order. We show that flattened $k$-Stirling permutations of order $n+1$ are in bijection correspondence with a colored variant of type $B$ set partitions of $[-n,n]$, introduced by D.G.L. Wang. Using the theory of weighted labelled structures, we give the exponential generating functions of their cardinality and their descent enumerating polynomials. We also provide enumerative formulae for the number of flattened $k$-Stirling permutations of order $n$ with small number of descents and the number of flattened Stirling permutations with maximum number of descents.

Abstract:The study of flattened partitions is an active area of current research. In this paper, our study unexpectedly leads us to the OEIS numbers A124324. We provide a new combinatorial interpretation of these numbers. A combinatorial bijection between flattened partitions over $[n+1]$ and the partitions of $[n]$ is also given in a separate section. We introduce the numbers $f_{n, k}$ which count the number of flattened partitions over $[n]$ having $k$ runs. We give recurrence relations defining them, as well as their exponential generating function in differential form. It should be appreciated if its closed form is established. We extend the results to flattened partitions where the first $s$ integers belong to different runs. Combinatorial proofs are given.

Abstract:We prove that the number of permutations which avoid 132-patterns and have exactly one 123-pattern equals (n-2)2^(n-3). We then give a bijection onto the set of permutations which avoid 123-patterns and have exactly one 132-pattern. Finally, we show that the number of permutations which contain exactly one 123-pattern and exactly one 132-pattern is (n-3)(n-4)2^(n-5).

Abstract:In this paper, we give a formula for the number of permutations that avoid the split patterns $3|12$ and $23|1$ with respect to a position $r$. Such permutations count the number of Schubert varieties for which the projection map from the flag variety to a Grassmannian induces a fiber bundle structure. We also study the corresponding bivariate generating function and show how it is related to modified Bessel functions.

Pattern avoidance in nonnesting permutations

Abstract:Nonnesting permutations are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid subsequences of the form $abba$ for any $a\neq b$. These permutations have recently been studied in connection to noncrossing (also called quasi-Stirling) permutations, which are those that avoid subsequences of the form $abab$, and in turn generalize the well-known Stirling permutations. Inspired by the work by Archer et al. on pattern avoidance in noncrossing permutations, we consider the analogous problem in the nonnesting case. We enumerate nonnesting permutations that avoid each set of two or more patterns of length 3, as well as those that avoid some sets of patterns of length 4. We obtain closed formulas and generating functions, some of which involve unexpected appearances of the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. Our proofs rely on decompositions, recurrences, and bijections.

Counting occurrences of patterns in permutations

Abstract:We develop a new, powerful method for counting elements in a multiset. As a first application, we use this algorithm to study the number of occurrences of patterns in a permutation. For patterns of length 3 there are two Wilf classes, and the general behaviour of these is reasonably well-known. We slightly extend some of the known results in that case, and exhaustively study the case of patterns of length 4, about which there is little previous knowledge. For such patterns, there are seven Wilf classes, and based on extensive enumerations and careful series analysis, we have conjectured the asymptotic behaviour for all classes.

Abstract:Let $ (P_n)_{n\ge 0}$ be the sequence of Perrin numbers defined by ternary relation $ P_0=3 $, $ P_1=0 $, $ P_2=2 $, and $ P_{n+3}=P_{n+1}+P_n $ for all $ n\ge 0 $. In this paper, we use Baker's theory for nonzero linear forms in logarithms of algebraic numbers and the reduction procedure involving the theory of continued fractions, to explicitly determine all Perrin numbers that are concatenations of two distinct repeated digit numbers.
Explicit, recurrent, determinantal expressions of the $k$th power of formal power series and applications to the generalized Bernoulli numbers

Abstract:In this work, the authors provide closed forms and recurrence expressions for computing the $k$th power of the formal power series, some of them in terms of a determinant of some matrices. As a consequence, we obtain the reciprocal of the unit of any formal power series. We apply these results to the generalized Bernoulli numbers and Bernoulli numbers, we derive new closed-form expressions and some recursive relations of these famous numbers. In addition, we present several identities in determinant form. Using these results, an elegant generalization of a well known identity of Euler is presented. We also note some connections between the Stirling numbers of the second kind and the generalized Bernoulli numbers.

Abstract:Answering a question of Donald Knuth, we find the bivariate exponential generating function for "up-up-or-down-down'' permutations of odd length according to their last entry. An up-up-or-down-down permutation is a permutation $a_1a_2\cdots a_n$ satisfying $a_{2i-1}<a_{2i}$ if and only if $a_{2i}<a_{2i+1}$ for $1\le i <n/2$. Equivalently, an up-up-or-down-down permutation is one in which every peak and every valley is odd.

Abstract:In this paper, improving the method of Allouche et al., we calculate the Hankel determinant of the regular paperfolding sequence, and prove that the Hankel determinant sequence modulo 2 is periodic with period 10 which answers Coonʼs conjecture. Then we extend Bugeaudʼs method to obatin the exact value of the irrationality exponent for some general transcendental numbers. Using the results above, we prove that the irrationality exponents of the regular paperfolding numbers are exactly 2.
