Abstract:An avoidance pattern where the letters within an occurrence of which are required to be adjacent is referred to as a subword. In this paper, we enumerate members of the set NC_n of non-crossing partitions of length n according to the number of occurrences of several infinite families of subword patterns each containing repeated letters. As a consequence of our results, we obtain explicit generating function formulas counting the members of NC_n for n >= 0 according to all subword patterns of length three containing a repeated letter. Further, simple expressions are deduced for the total number of occurrences over all members of NC_n for the various families of patterns. Finally, combinatorial proofs can be given explaining three infinite families of subword equivalences over NC_n, which generalize the following equivalences: 211 = 221, 1211 = 1121 and 112 = 122.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the combinatorial properties of three classes of integer partitions: (1) $s$-modular partitions, a class consisting of partitions into parts with a number of occurrences (i.e., multiplicity) congruent to $0$ or $1$ modulo $s$, (2) $s$-congruent partitions, which generalize Sellers' partitions into parts not congruent to $2$ modulo $4$, and (3) $s$-duplicate partitions, of which the partitions having distinct odd parts and enumerated by the function $\mypod(n)$ are a special case. In this vein, we generalize Alladi's series expansion for the product generating function of $\mypod(n)$ and show that Andrews' generalization of Göllnitz-Gordon identities coincides with the number of partitions into parts simultaneously $s$-congruent and $t$-distinct (parts appearing fewer than $t$ times).

Pattern avoidance in nonnesting permutations

Abstract:Nonnesting permutations are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid subsequences of the form $abba$ for any $a\neq b$. These permutations have recently been studied in connection to noncrossing (also called quasi-Stirling) permutations, which are those that avoid subsequences of the form $abab$, and in turn generalize the well-known Stirling permutations. Inspired by the work by Archer et al. on pattern avoidance in noncrossing permutations, we consider the analogous problem in the nonnesting case. We enumerate nonnesting permutations that avoid each set of two or more patterns of length 3, as well as those that avoid some sets of patterns of length 4. We obtain closed formulas and generating functions, some of which involve unexpected appearances of the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. Our proofs rely on decompositions, recurrences, and bijections.

Abstract:We introduce a family of univariate polynomials indexed by integer partitions. At prime powers, they count the number of subspaces in a finite vector space that transform under a regular diagonal matrix in a specified manner. This enumeration formula is a combinatorial solution to a problem introduced by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey. At $1$, they count set partitions with specified block sizes. At $0$, they count standard tableaux of specified shape. At $-1$, they count standard shifted tableaux of a specified shape. These polynomials are generated by a new statistic on set partitions (called the interlacing number) as well as a polynomial statistic on standard tableaux. They allow us to express $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind as sums over standard tableaux and as sums over set partitions. For partitions whose parts are at most two, these polynomials are the non-zero entries of the Catalan triangle associated to the $q$-Hermite orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, when all parts are equal to two, they coincide with the polynomials defined by Touchard that enumerate chord diagrams by the number of crossings.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a formula for the number of permutations that avoid the split patterns $3|12$ and $23|1$ with respect to a position $r$. Such permutations count the number of Schubert varieties for which the projection map from the flag variety to a Grassmannian induces a fiber bundle structure. We also study the corresponding bivariate generating function and show how it is related to modified Bessel functions.

Abstract:Consider the set $\{1,2,\ldots,3n\}$. We are interested in the number of partitions of this set into subsets of three elements each, where the sum of two of them equals the third. We give some criteria such a partition has to fulfill, which can be used for efficient pruning in the search for these partitions. In particular, we enumerate all such partitions for $n=16$ and $n=17$ adding new terms to the series A108235 in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences.

Abstract:We give an explicit formula for the number of permutations avoiding cyclically a consecutive pattern in terms of the spectrum of the associated operator of the consecutive pattern. As an example, the number of cyclically consecutive $123$-avoiding permutations in ${\mathfrak S}_{n}$ is given by $n!$ times the convergent series ${\displaystyle \sum_{k=-\infty}^{\infty} \left(\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2\pi(k+1/3)}\right)^{n}}$ for $n \geq 2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $\pi$ is independent of the choice of $\pi\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $\pi\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $\pi \in S_3$. Analogous to Lewis's method, we establish a bijection from generalized permutations to rectangular semistandard Young tableaux which will recover several known results in the literature.

Abstract:A composition of a positive integer n is a k-tuple (λ1, λ2, …, λk) ∈ ℤk>0 such that n = λ1 + λ2 + … + λk. Our goal is to enumerate those compositions whose parts λ1, λ2, …, λk avoid a fixed arithmetic sequence. When this sequence is given by the even integers (i.e., all parts of the compositions must be odd), it is well known that the number of compositions is given by the Fibonacci sequence. A much more recent theorem says that when the parts are required to avoid all multiples of a given integer k, the resulting compositions are counted by a sequence given by a Fibonacci-type recursion of depth k. We extend this result to arbitrary arithmetic sequences. Our main tool is a lemma on generating functions that is no secret among experts but deserves to be more widely known.

Abstract:In [BS] Babson and Steingrimsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. Let $f_{\tau;r}(n)$ be the number of $1\mn3\mn2$-avoiding permutations on $n$ letters that contain exactly $r$ occurrences of $\tau$, where $\tau$ a generalized pattern on $k$ letters. Let $F_{\tau;r}(x)$ and $F_\tau(x,y)$ be the generating functions defined by $F_{\tau;r}(x)=\sum_{n\geq0} f_{\tau;r}(n)x^n$ and $F_\tau(x,y)=\sum_{r\geq0}F_{\tau;r}(x)y^r$. We find an explicit expression for $F_\tau(x,y)$ in the form of a continued fraction for where $\tau$ given as a generalized pattern; $\tau=12\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $\tau=21\mn3\mn...\mn k$, $\tau=123... k$, or $\tau=k... 321$. In particularly, we find $F_\tau(x,y)$ for any $\tau$ generalized pattern of length 3. This allows us to express $F_{\tau;r}(x)$ via Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, and continued fractions.

Abstract:In 2019, Bóna and Smith introduced the notion of \emph{strong pattern avoidance}, that is, a permutation and its square both avoid a given pattern. In this paper, we enumerate the set of permutations $\pi$ which not only strongly avoid the pattern $312$ or $231$ but also avoid the pattern $\tau$, for $\tau\in S_3$ and some $\tau\in S_4$. One of them is to give a positive answer to a conjecture of Archer and Geary.

Abstract:The number of standard Young tableaux possible of shape corresponding to a partition $\lambda$ is called the dimension of the partition and is denoted by $f^{\lambda}$. Partitions with odd dimensions were enumerated by McKay and were further classified by Macdonald. Let $a_i(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ with dimension congruent to $i$ modulo 4. In this paper, we refine Macdonald's and McKay's results by calculating $a_1(n)$ and $a_3(n)$ when $n$ has no consecutive 1s in its binary expansion or when the sum of binary digits of $n$ is 2 and giving a recursive formula to compute $a_2(n)$ for all $n$.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent proof of the Stanley-Wilf conjecture, we study the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a generalized pattern. Generalized patterns allow the requirement that some pairs of letters must be adjacent in an occurrence of the pattern in the permutation, and consecutive patterns are a particular case of them. We determine the asymptotic behavior of the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern, showing that they are an exponentially small proportion of the total number of permutations. For some other generalized patterns we give partial results, showing that the number of permutations avoiding them grows faster than for classical patterns but more slowly than for consecutive patterns.
