Abstract:For steady flow, one usually decomposes the total drag into different components by wake-plane integrals and seeks their reduction strategies separately. Unlike the body-surface stress integral, the induced drag as well as the profile drag has been found to depend on the streamwise location of the wake plane used for drag estimate. It gradually diminishes as the wake plane moves downstream, which was often attributed to numerical dissipation. In this paper, we present an exact general force-breakdown theory and its numerical demonstrations for viscous incompressible flow over an arbitrary aircraft to address this puzzling issue. Based on the theory, the induced and profile drags do depend inherently on the wake-plane location rather than being merely caused by numerical dissipation. The underlying mechanisms are identified in terms of the components, moments, and physical dissipation of the Lamb-vector field produced by the aircraft motion. This theoretical prediction is fully consistent with the linear far-field force theory that the induced drag finally vanishes and the profile drag increases to the total drag at an infinitely far field for viscous flow. Moreover, as a product of this exact theory, a new compact midwake approximation for the induced drag is proposed for the convenience of routine wake survey in industry. Its prediction is similar to conventional formulas for attached flow but behaves much better for separated flow.
Momentum fluxes in wind-forced breaking waves

Abstract:We investigate the momentum fluxes between a turbulent air boundary layer and a growing-breaking wave field by solving the air-water two-phase Navier-Stokes equations through direct numerical simulations (DNS). A fully-developed turbulent airflow drives the growth of a narrowbanded wave field, whose amplitude increases until reaching breaking conditions. The breaking events result in a loss of wave energy, transferred to the water column, followed by renewed growth under wind forcing. We revisit the momentum flux analysis in a high-wind speed regime, characterized by the ratio of the friction velocity to wave speed $u_\ast/c$ in the range $[0.3-0.9]$, through the lens of growing-breaking cycles. The total momentum flux across the interface is dominated by pressure, which increases with $u_\ast/c$ during growth and reduces sharply during breaking. Drag reduction during breaking is linked to airflow separation, a sudden acceleration of the flow, an upward shift of the mean streamwise velocity profile, and a reduction in Reynolds shear stress. We characterize the reduction of pressure stress and flow acceleration through an aerodynamic drag coefficient by splitting the analysis between growing and breaking stages, treating them as separate sub-processes. While drag increases with $u_\ast/c$ during growth, it drops during breaking. Averaging over both stages leads to a saturation of the drag coefficient at high $u_\ast/c$, comparable to what is observed at high wind speeds in laboratory and field conditions. Our analysis suggests this saturation is controlled by breaking dynamics.

Abstract:A recently proposed aerodynamic force theory of compressible high-Reynolds-number flows based on the concept of vortex force is here analyzed. The aerodynamic force is obtained by means of volume and surface integrals within the flow. The theory proposes the decomposition of the aerodynamic force, both lift and drag components, in reversible and irreversible contributions. The former is responsible for the lift and lift-induced drag, and the latter for the viscous and wave drag components. The analysis is here concentrated on the following aspects: 1) link with traditional drag breakdown methods and sensitivity of the force decomposition to the choice of the integration domain, 2) analysis in the limit of inviscid flow, and 3) effects of the Reynolds number. The verification of the analysis is obtained postprocessing viscous and inviscid numerical solutions around airfoils and wings.
Lift and Drag in Two-Dimensional Steady Viscous and Compressible Flow: I. Far-Field Formulae Analysis and Numerical Confirmation

Abstract:This paper studies the lift and drag experienced by a body in a two-dimensional, viscous, compressible and steady flow. We prove formally by linear far-field formulae and Helmholtz decomposition of velocity field that the classic lift formula L = −ρ0UΓφ, originally derived by Joukowski in 1906 for inviscid potential flow and drag formula D = ρ0UQψ for incompressible viscous flow by Filon in 1926, are universally true for the whole field of viscous compressible flow in a wide range of Mach number, from subsonic to supersonic flows. Here, Γφ and Qψ denote the circulation of longitudinal velocity component and inflow of transverse velocity component, respectively. Thus, the steady lift and drag are always exactly determined by the values of Γφ and Qψ, no matter how complicated the near-field viscous flow surrounding the body could be. However, velocity potentials are not directly observable either experimentally or computationally, and hence neither are the JoukowskiFilon formulae (J-F formulae for short). Thus, a testable version of the J-F formulae is also derived, which holds only in the linear far field. These formulae are then examined by a careful numerical simulation of a typical airfoil flow in the range of free Mach number between 0.1 to 2.0. The results strongly support and enrich the J-F formulae. The computed Mach-number dependence of L and D and its underlying physics, as well as the physical implication of the J-F formulae, are addressed. This far-field analysis has been confirmed by a further analytical theory to be reported in a companion paper.

Abstract:Drag reduction is one of the maj or tasks of aerodynamics.Traditional principles of flow diagnosis and drag reduction are based on concepts of linear﹣decomposition/superposition.In our recent work,for steady flows around a given configuration and flow condition,the induced drag as well as the profile drag has been found to depend on the streamwise location of the wake planes,and the widely﹣used existing theories can only be applied to simple attached flow.Based on these findings,all force components and their correlation are proved to have a common root at the Lamb﹣vector field produced by the body’s steady motion.In order to diagnose complex flows, a new technical principle is proposed in this article,which defines aerodynamic components by using Lamb﹣vector field observed on a chosen set of planes in the flow field.As an example,the steady separated flow over a slender delta wing at large angles of attack is computed to determine the flow structures responsible for the aerodynamic force components.It is pointed out that the secondary vortex structure near the wingtip produces negative lift and profile drag.The root of the structure can be traced back to the specific area of the wall according to the boundary vorticity dynamics,which then guides a conceptual configuration optimization to increase the lift﹣to﹣drag ratio.

Abstract:This study employs numerical simulation to investigate the microbubble drag reduction on an axisymmetric body underwater vehicle. The Eulerian multiphase model and the k-ω turbulence model are utilized to simulate gas-liquid two-phase flow. The results show that air injection reduces the frictional drag of the vehicle but increases the pressure drag. The reduction in frictional drag is directly related to the surface air volume fraction. Due to the buoyancy effect, the distribution of bubbles around the vehicle is non-uniform, especially at lower water velocities. After air injection, lower velocity or even flow separation is observed near the tail of the vehicle. The flow separation results in localized energy losses and reduces pressure there, ultimately increasing the pressure drag. The flow separation and pressure drop near the top of the tail section are more severe than near the bottom. Flow separation near the tail is more likely to occur with higher air flow rates and lower water velocities. Considering solely the impact of bubble diameter, smaller bubbles tend to adhere closer to the surface of the vehicle, resulting in a greater reduction in frictional drag but also leading to higher pressure drag.

Abstract:For an observer at very far field, a body moving through a fluid appears as a singular point, and its action to the fluid appears as an impulse force. Meanwhile, the far-field disturbance flow is weak and governed by the linearized Navier-Stokes equations for both incompressible and compressible flows. Therefore, the analytical fundamental solutions of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations can well be applied to the far field to derive the lift and drag formulas analytically. We do this for steady two-dimensional, viscous, and compressible flow over a body, and thereby prove the general exact validity of the classic Kutta-Joukowski lift formula in terms of circulation Γ and the drag formula in terms of inflow Q (also a contour integral). These formulas have the same form as that of the incompressible flow, so the effects of all complex flow structures and processes in near field on lift and drag at varying Mach numbers amount exclusively to the specific values of Γ and Q to be determined by near-field flow data. This result not only confirms and sharpens the findings of a companion paper, but also provides a much simpler alternative approach to the traditional far-field analysis for the same purpose, using iterative series expansion of solutions.

Abstract:Numerical simulations using the Gidaspow and Syamlal-O'Brien drag models have been performed based on the National Energy Technology Laboratory small scale challenge problem for three test cases. Validation tools including statistical moments, spectral analysis, and the autocorrelation function are used to analyze the pressure drop fluctuations. The analyses using these tools reveal a regime change from bubbling/slugging to turbulent flow with increasing superficial gas velocity. 1D discrete wavelet analysis is utilized in the study of the distribution of energy between the macro-, meso-, and microscales and also in the characterization of turbulence quantified in terms of the flatness factor. 1D fast Fourier transform energy spectra are constructed from the predicted and measured particle velocity data and compared. Predicted and measured granular temperatures are found to be in reasonable agreement with literature values.

Abstract:A primary objective of integral methods, such as the momentum integral method, is to discern the physical processes contributing to skin friction. These methods encompass the momentum, kinetic energy and angular momentum integrals. This paper reformulates existing integrals based on the double-averaged Navier–Stokes equations, and extends their application to flows over rough walls. Our derivation yields distinct decompositions for the bottom-wall viscous friction coefficient, denoted as , and the roughness element drag coefficient . The decompositions comprise three terms: a viscous term, a turbulent term and a roughness (dispersive) term – regardless of the flow configuration, be it channel or boundary layer. Notably, when these integrals are evaluated for laminar flow scenarios, only the viscous term remains significant. In addition, we elucidate the spatial distributions of the terms within these decompositions. To demonstrate the practicality of our formulations, we apply them to analyse data from direct numerical simulations of turbulent half-channel flows. These flows feature aligned and staggered cubical roughness at various packing densities. Our analyses, based on kinetic-energy-oriented decompositions, reveal that when the surface coverage density is small, the dominant terms within the decompositions are the viscous and turbulent terms. With increasing , the viscous dissipation term decreases, while the turbulent production term increases and then decreases. These variations arise from a subdued near-wall cycle and the development of a shear layer at the height of the cubes.

Abstract:This paper proposes a control strategy in which immersed bodies are driven to rotate not by external forces but by the flow itself. Due to the asymmetric distribution of the shear stress exerted on the surfaces, two side-by-side arranged cylinders rotate about their axes to produce moving fluid-solid boundaries. It is shown that the drag and the lift coefficients are significantly reduced in comparison with the stationary cylinder system. Different from the slip-boundary technique, the drag-reduction mechanism is explained in terms of a pressure-recovery effect introduced by the rotating surfaces.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Liu et al. [“Lift and drag in three-dimensional steady viscous and compressible flow”, Phys. Fluids 29, 116105 (2017)] obtained a universal theory for the aerodynamic force on a body in three-dimensional steady flow, effective from incompressible all the way to supersonic regimes. In this theory, the total aerodynamic force can be determined solely with the vorticity distribution on a single wake plane locating in the steady linear far field. Despite the vital importance of this result, its validity and performance in practice has not been investigated yet. In this paper, we performed Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations of subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flows over a three-dimensional wing. The aerodynamic forces obtained from the universal force theory are compared with that from the standard wall-stress integrals. The agreement between these two formulas confirms for the first time the validity of the theory in three-dimensional steady viscous and compressible flow. The good performance of the universal formula is mainly due to the fact that the turbulent viscosity in the wake is much larger than the molecular viscosity therein, which can reduce significantly the distance of the steady linear far field from the body. To further confirm the correctness of the theory, comparisons are made for the flow structures on the wake plane obtained from the analytical results and numerical simulations. The underlying physics relevant to the universality of the theory is explained by identifying different sources of vorticity in the wake.

Abstract:Interaction flow always occurs in the aero engine, multi-stage compressor and turbine, reduction of unsteady stator-rotor interaction becomes the aim of researchers. In this paper, a developed plate stator model was studied. First, the mean velocity profiles have been measured in the wake of the single stator with and without mass injection through TEB using HWA (Hotwire Anemometers); four wake characteristics have been gained through momentum thicknesses judgments: pure wake, weak wake, momentumless wake, jet. Through the results, the spreading characteristic of important wake characteristics, such as, velocity profile, velocity frequency spectra and wake width had been gained. Then a PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) experiment investigation was performed to assess the effects of momentumless wake to a low pressure axial rotor. The results show that the momentumless wake makes the inlet flow of the rotor more uniform and improves the inlet flow angle of the rotor.

Abstract:We derive analytical formulas for the wake and wave drag of a disturbance moving arbitrarily at the air-water interface. We show that, provided a constant velocity is reached in finite time, the unsteady surface displacement converges to its well-known steady counterpart as given by Havelock's famous formula. Finally we assess, in a specific situation, to which extent one can rightfully use Havelock's steady wave drag formula for non-uniform motion (quasi-static). Such an approach can be used to legitimize or discredit a number of studies which used steady wave drag formulas in unsteady situations.

Propulsion Performance of a Two-Dimensional Flapping Airfoil with Wake Map and Dynamic Mode Decomposition Analysis

Abstract:In the present study, we use the dynamic mesh method based on the radial basis function interpolation for the two-dimensional simulation of harmonically oscillating NACA0015 airfoil. Under various flapping frequencies, heaving and pitching amplitudes, the observed wake flows can be divided into seven types, including the Bénard-von Kármán (BvK) vortex street, the reversed BvK (RBvK) vortex street, the 1P wake, the mP wake, the 2P+mS wake, the 2S+mS wake, and the mS wake, where m is around 4 and xS+yP signifies x single vortices and y vortex pairs shedding per oscillation period. Then we have constructed two phase diagrams of the wake types in terms of the flapping frequency, heaving and pitching amplitudes. Importantly, we have combined the propulsion performance of the flapping airfoil with the wake map and found that α(T/4), the angle of attack at t=T/4, can determine the wake type: negative value corresponding to drag-dominated wakes, while positive value corresponding to thrust dominated flow wakes. With the increase of α(T/4), the wake transforms from the mP to 2S+mS then to RBvK and eventually to 1P wake. Furthermore, the coherent structure analysis and spectral analysis are conducted for all the types of wakes by using dynamic mode decomposition. And there is a positive correlation between the strengths of vortices shedding at i times flapping frequency and the modulus of the ith dynamic mode decomposition mode, which can further reveal the differences among different types of wakes.
Drag Reduction by Axisymmetric Traveling Wavy Wall

Abstract:This paper extends the previous two-dimensional analytical theory of the inviscid periodic separated flow over an infinitely long traveling wavy wall to axisymmetric flow, which serves as a theoretical guidance to the study on active drag-reduction flow control by flexible wall with traveling waves. Physically, at a special critical wave speed the flow may have a naturally periodical separated-reattached pattern, with each wave trough capturing a stable vortex ring. This row of vortex rings forms a "fluid roller bearing" over the wall, which separates the near-wall layer from the external main stream such that the former only has a weak periodic shearing. In this state the total drag of the columnar body due to both pressure and skin friction will tend to vanish. This paper establishes an inviscid theoretical model to mimic this flow physics by using two rows of staggered vortex rings. The theory confirms the unique existence of the critical wave speed and can be used to select the wave pattern of the flexible wall as well as the value of the critical wave speed. It is found that, as the radius of the columnar body approaches infinity, the asymptotic critical wave speed does not equal the two-dimensional value for the same amplitude.
Coherent pressure and acceleration estimation from triply decomposed turbulent bluff-body wakes

Abstract:A novel method is introduced to estimate phase-averaged pressure and acceleration of the coherent structures. It is applied and validated in the near wake of a two-dimensional bluff body. The method is validated using synthetic data generated by simulating an unsteady laminar flow around a D-shaped bluff body; the effect of noise is investigated to simulate an experimental scenario. The acceleration terms, required for the closure of flow-governing equations, are accurately estimated using this approach. The findings demonstrate that the methodology outputs consistent results for the pressure field while combined with a divergence-correction scheme, based on Helmholtz decomposition, and an optimal control method using sparse sensor measurements. The approach is later validated on experimental data obtained in the turbulent wake of a bluff body by means of "Particle Image Velocimetry" (PIV). Triple-decomposed flow fields are provided as input, where triple-decomposition refers to the instantaneous flow fields split into a mean flow, coherent and incoherent structures. The coherent structures are extracted using the method of "Proper Orthogonal Decomposition" (POD). Coherent lift coefficients, estimated using integral budgets of momentum, remain within the sensor-measured range, whereas coherent drag coefficients show excellent agreement. Moreover, a significant reduction in the residuals, arising from the balance of the flow-governing equations, is achieved. Although the temporal information is lost when computing POD modes, the proposed method is able to recover it and estimate the pressure. Accordingly, the method can be extended to any time-dependant modal decomposition, thereby providing a low-cost alternative to expensive "time-resolved" PIV (tr-PIV) measurements.

Abstract:We present a dynamic decomposition analysis of the wake flow in fluid–structure interaction (FSI) systems under both laminar and turbulent flow conditions. Of particular interest is to provide the significance of low-dimensional wake flow features and their interaction dynamics to sustain the free vibration of a square cylinder at a relatively low mass ratio. To obtain the high-dimensional data, we employ a body-conforming variational FSI solver based on the recently developed partitioned iterative scheme and the dynamic subgrid-scale turbulence model for a moderate Reynolds number ( $Re$ ). The snapshot data from high-dimensional FSI simulations are projected to a low-dimensional subspace using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). We utilize each corresponding POD mode to detect features of the organized motions, namely, the vortex street, the shear layer and the near-wake bubble. We find that the vortex shedding modes contribute solely to the lift force, while the near-wake and shear layer modes play a dominant role in the drag force. We further examine the fundamental mechanism of this dynamical behaviour and propose a force decomposition technique via low-dimensional approximation. To elucidate the frequency lock-in, we systematically analyse the decomposed modes and their dynamical contributions to the force fluctuations for a range of reduced velocity at low Reynolds number laminar flow. These quantitative mode energy contributions demonstrate that the shear layer feeds the vorticity flux to the wake vortices and the near-wake bubble during the wake–body synchronization. Based on the decomposition of wake dynamics, we suggest an interaction cycle for the frequency lock-in during the wake–body interaction, which provides the interrelationship between the high-amplitude motion and the dominating wake features. Through our investigation of wake–body synchronization below critical $Re$ range, we discover that the bluff body can undergo a synchronized high-amplitude vibration due to flexibility-induced unsteadiness. Owing to the wake turbulence at a moderate Reynolds number of $Re=22\,000$ , a distorted set of POD modes and the broadband energy distribution are observed, while the interaction cycle for the wake synchronization is found to be valid for the turbulent wake flow.

Abstract:A novel decomposition method that adheres to both local time translation symmetry and spatial rotational symmetry is proposed in this study, thereby extending the limitations of existing methods, which are typically restricted to quasi-two-dimensional configurations. Grounded in the FIK and RD identities, this method provides a clear physical and reliable interpretation suitable for arbitrary-curvature profiles. Utilizing this method, an analysis of the aerothermodynamic characteristics of the bistable states of curved compression ramp flows was conducted. The results reveal that the generation of undisturbed and peak Cf is dominated by viscous dissipation. Specifically, flow separation happens when all of the energy input from the work exerted by the adverse pressure gradient (APG) is insufficient to be entirely converted into local viscous dissipation and kinetic energy. Furthermore, the propensity for flow separation at higher wall temperatures is firstly elucidated quantitatively from the perspective of the work by the APG. The peak heat flux is predominantly triggered by the work of viscous stress, with the secondary contribution from energy transport playing a more significant role in the generation of the peak heat flux of the separation state than that of the attachment state.

Abstract:The prediction of breaking wave loads is challenging in ocean engineering due to air entrapment and com-pressibility. In order to investigate air compressibility effects in different modes of breaking wave impact, a twophase compressible flow model is proposed. A high-order finite difference method, Constrained Interpolation Profile (CIP) method is employed to discretize the Navier-Stokes equations, and the interface is captured by Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing (THINC) scheme. The present compressible model is validated against several tests: 1-D gravity-induced liquid piston motion, idealized free drop of water patch impact and dam-break experiments. Special attention of this study is paid to breaking wave impacts on a vertical wall in a liquid sloshing tank. For air entrapped impact, the results of CIP-based compressible model are in good agreement with experimental data. It is shown that the air compressibility leads to high-frequency oscillation of the impact pressure, which cannot be reproduced by the incompressible model. It is found that the oscillation of the impact pressure is synchronized with the compression and expansion of the entrapped air pocket, and the oscillation frequency is related to the size of air pocket. For air-water mixing impact, the oscillation of the pressure may be more intense.
