Abstract:The theory of improving the bearing capacity of fluid lubrication with a heterogeneous slip/no-slip surface has been proposed in recent years, and the extended Reynolds equation is the main mathematical model used to describe the phenomenon. However, methods that change the hydrodynamic pressure with a heterogeneous surface and apply the Reynolds equation considering partial slip factors have not been validated in practical applications. In this article, experiments are conducted to study the effect of a heterogeneous slip/no-slip surface on the normal forces of laminar flow between parallel plates, and the extended Reynolds equation in cylindrical coordinates is established based on the tests. The results of the simulation and the experiments reveal the following findings: (1) the normal forces of laminar flow on a heterogeneous slip/no-slip surface between parallel plates can be determined; (2) due to the large oil film thickness, the pressure of the reverse flow is much greater than the saturated vapor pressure, which indicates that the cavitation will not occur; moreover, the negative forces of the reverse flow are investigated in the experiments; and (3) because the normal forces of the experiments are similar to those of the extended Reynolds equation, the extended Reynolds equation with constant film thickness is considered applicable for the test conditions.
