Abstract:In the present work, we report a greener and efficient process of hydrothermal conversion of rice straw (Cd low accumulated crop) and Elsholtzia splendens (Cu accumulated plant) to recover the metals and simultaneously produce biofuel for harmless treatment and resource reuse. The impacts of different types of additives, raw materials/solvent ratios, reaction times, and temperatures are investigated, and the composition of solid phase left is also studied for future efficient use. As the results suggest, almost all enriched metals (95 +/- 2% of Cu in E. splendens and almost all Cd in rice straw) are concentrated in solid phase after hydrothermal conversion with a considerable amount of carbohydrates contained, making the solid residue an excellent material for producing metal carbide catalysts. During the hydrothermal conversion, the additives have little impact on the metals recovery, and higher raw material/solvent ratios have higher yields of Cu/Cd. Finally, 22.0-25.0% yields of bio-oils without any metals are achieved with a high heating value (>= 35.2 MJ/kg) for both types of plants. This work creates new opportunities for the full utilization of heavy metal accumulated plants to remediate heavy metal contaminated land without any waste and pollution.

Abstract:Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using endophytic bacteria is a safe alternative to the traditional chemical method. The purpose of this research is to biosynthesize AgNPs using endophytic bacterium Bacillus endophyticus strain H3 isolated from onion. The biosynthesized AgNPs with sizes from 4.17 to 26.9 nm were confirmed and characterized by various physicochemical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in addition to an energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) profile. The biosynthesized AgNPs at a concentration of 40 mu g/mL had a strong antifungal activity against rice blast pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae with an inhibition rate of 88% in mycelial diameter. Moreover, the biosynthesized AgNPs significantly inhibited spore germination and appressorium formation of M. oryzae. Additionally, microscopic observation showed that mycelia morphology was swollen and abnormal when dealing with AgNPs. Overall, the current study revealed that AgNPs could protect rice plants against fungal infections.

Abstract:The recovery of useful materials from earth-abundant substances is of strategic importance for industrial processes. Despite the fact that Si is the second most abundant element in the Earth's crust, processes to form Si nanomaterials is usually complex, costly and energy-intensive. Here we show that pure Si nanoparticles (SiNPs) can be derived directly from rice husks (RHs), an abundant agricultural byproduct produced at a rate of 1.2 × 108 tons/year, with a conversion yield as high as 5% by mass. And owing to their small size (10–40 nm) and porous nature, these recovered SiNPs exhibits high performance as Li-ion battery anodes, with high reversible capacity (2,790 mA h g−1, seven times greater than graphite anodes) and long cycle life (86% capacity retention over 300 cycles). Using RHs as the raw material source, overall energy-efficient, green and large scale synthesis of low-cost and functional Si nanomaterials is possible.

Abstract:Highly efficient resource recycling and comprehensive utilization play a crucial role in achieving the goal of reducing resource wasting, environmental protection, and achieving goal of sustainable development. In this work, the two kinds waste resources of agricultural rice husk and metal ions (Co, Ni, and Mn) from spent lithium-ion batteries have been skillfully utilized to synthesize novel Fenton-like catalysts. Desiliconized rice husk carbon (DRHC) with rich pore structure and large specific surface area from rice husk has been prepared and used as scalable carrier, and dandelion-like nanoparticles cluster could be grown in situ on the surface of the carrier by using metal ions contained waste water. The designed catalysts (X@DRHC) as well as their preparation process were characterized in detail by SEM, TEM, BET, XRD and XPS, respectively. Meanwhile, their catalytic abilities were also studied by activating potassium peroxomonosulfate (PMS) to remove methylene blue (MB). The results indicate X@DRHC displays excellent degradation efficiency on MB with wide pH range and stable reusability, which is suitable for the degradation of various dyes. This work has realized the recycling and high-value utilization of waste resources from biomass and spent lithium-ion batteries, which not only creates an efficient way to dispose waste resources, but also shows high economic benefits in large-scale water treatment.
Rice straw waste-based green synthesis and characterizations investigation of Fe-MoS2-derived nanohybrid

Abstract:In present work, synthesis of a nanohybrid material using Fe and MoS2 has been performed via a cost-effective and environmentally friendly route for sustainable manufacturing innovation. Rice straw extract was prepared and used as a reducing and chelating agent to synthesize the nanohybrid material by mixing it with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and ferric nitrate [Fe (NO3)3.9H2O], followed by heating and calcination. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirms the formation of a nanohybrid consisting of monoclinic Fe2(MoO4)3, cubic Fe2.957O4, and orthorhombic FeS with 86% consisting of Fe2(MoO4)3. The properties were analyzed through Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results of the dynamic light scattering (DLS) study revealed a heterogeneous size distribution, with an average particle size of 48.42 nm for 18% of particles and 384.54 nm for 82% of particles. Additionally, the zeta potential was measured to be -18.88 mV, suggesting moderate stability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed the presence of both Fe2+ and Fe3+ oxidation states along with the presence of Molybdenum (Mo), oxygen (O), and Sulphur (S). The prepared nanohybrid material exhibited a band gap of 2.95 eV, and the photoluminescence intensity increased almost twice that of bare MoS2. The present work holds potential applications in photo luminescent nanoplatform for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Sustainable use of agricultural waste still remains a challenging task. Herein, we used rice straw as a carbon precursor to prepare carbon quantum dots (CQDs) for photocatalytic applications. Nanocomposites of CQDs with Ti 4+ and Mg 2+ substituted strontium ferrite (Sr 0·4 Ti 0·4 Mg 0·2 Fe 2 O 4.4 ) nanoparticles (NPs) in varying w:w ratio was synthesized by ultrasonication method. The successful formation of nanocomposites was confirmed by various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The photocatalytic and antibacterial activity of NPs, CQDs and nanocomposites was comparatively evaluated using tetracycline hydrochloride, azure B, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli as model pollutants. The CQDs-Sr 0.4 Ti 0·4 Mg 0·2 Fe 2 O 4.4 nanocomposite with a w:w ratio of 2:1 showed excellent photocatalytic and antibacterial activity, with the degradation and inactivation efficiency ranging from 97.1% to 99.0% in presence of visible light. The increased specific surface area (117.2 m 2 /g), and reduction in band gap (2.48 eV–2.09 eV) and decreased photoluminescence intensity of nanocomposites all corroborated these results. The impacting experimental parameters such as catalyst dose, pH and contact time were also examined. Quenching experiments confirmed that hydroxyl radicals ( HO∙) radicals and holes (h + ) played a vital role in the degradation of pollutants. The kinetics of photodegradation was explained by using the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model. Box-Behnken statistical modelling was used to optimize photocatalytic parameters. Results indicated that the nanocomposite of CQDs with Sr 0·4 Ti 0·4 Mg 0·2 Fe 2 O 4.4 can serve as a promising photocatalyst for the removal of pollutants and microbes.

Abstract:Agriculture plays a crucial role in safeguarding food security, more so as the world population increases gradually. A productive agricultural system is supported by seed, soil, fertiliser and good management practices. Food productivity directly correlates to the generation of solid wastes and utilization of agrochemicals, both of which negatively impact the environment. The rice and paddy industry significantly adds to the growing menace of waste management. In low and middle-income countries, rice husk (RH) is an underutilized agro-waste discarded in landfills or burned in-situ. RH holds enormous potential in the development of value-added nanomaterials for agricultural applications. In this study, a simple and inexpensive sol-gel method is described to extract mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) from UKMRC8 RH using the bottom-up approach. RHs treated with hydrochloric acid were calcinated to obtain rice husk ash (RHA) with high silica purity (> 98% wt), as determined by the X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). Calcination at 650 °C for four hours in a box furnace yielded RHA that was devoid of metal impurities and organic matter. The X-ray diffraction pattern showed a broad peak at 2θ≈20-22 °C and was free from any other sharp peaks, indicating the amorphous property of the RHA. Scanning electron micrographs (SEM) showed clusters of spherically shaped uniform aggregates of silica nanoparticles (NPs) while transmission electron microscopy analysis indicated an average particle size of < 20 nm. Besides Energy Dispersive X-Ray which validated the chemical constituent of the silica NPs, the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra showed peaks at 796.4 cm-1 and 1052 cm-1 corresponding to O-Si-O symmetric stretching vibration and O-Si-O asymmetric stretching, respectively. The Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) analysis indicated an average pore size = 8.5 nm while the specific surface area and the pore volume were 300.2015 m2/g and 0.659078 cm3/g, respectively. In conclusion, agrowaste-derived MSN was synthesized using a simple and economical sol-gel method without the addition of surfactant reagents for controlled formation at the structural level. Owing to the MSNs' excellent physical properties, the method established herein, could be used singly (without any modifications) for the functionalization of a myriad of agrochemicals.

Abstract:Template-free synthesis of nano-zeolite X at a high crystallization temperature and shorter time is attempted using rice husk ash silica, a low-cost and sustainable silica source, and the potential of the adsorbent for heavy metals is investigated. Rice husk ash silica and zeolites were characterized using XRF, XRD, SEM, FTIR, 29 Si solid-state NMR, and N 2 adsorption/desorption to determine the elemental composition, mineralogy, morphology, functional and framework structures, respectively. Static hydrothermal treatment (HT) at 100 °C for 6 h was established as the optimum synthesis condition for nano-zeolite X exhibiting particle size ~ 72 nm; pyramidal octahedral morphology with specific surface area and external surface area of 433 and 43 m 2 /g, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of NZX (q m ) for Cu 2+ and Ni 2+ was 60.24 mg/g and 36.90 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption is spontaneous and thermodynamically feasible; it can best be described by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model.

Abstract:Rice husk is a global agricultural co-product and is already the subject of several studies, notably for wastewater treatment. Rice husk is composed of 3 types of components: amorphous silica, organic biopolymers and others (salts, oxides…). Depending on the treatment, rice husk becomes either a carbon-free material or a mixed carbon/silica biochar. In this paper, a thorough characterisation of rice husk was carried out by SEM, TEM, TGA, XRF, XRD, XPS, FTIR, SAXS, SANS, NMR and N2 adsorption-desorption. The results show that silica can be present as dense silica or silica nanoparticles and that native organic matter can be converted to turbostratic carbon. This carbon “drowns” the silica nanoparticles and prevents them from sintering. Particular attention is paid to impurities which play a crucial role in several properties. They are present in different forms, such as CaCO3, KCl or Al2O3 or in the silica lattice. They can be removed, but if retained, they induce sintering and crystallisation of the silica nanoparticles, resulting in a decrease in specific surface area from 330 m2.g−1 to 15 m2.g−1. Moreover, the sorption efficiency of the materials is strongly dependent on the presence of impurities since the extraction rate drops drastically from 99% to <0.5% when the impurities are removed. The maximum capacity reached for nickel is 11.7 mg.g−1.

Abstract:It is important to reduce environmental problems caused by biowaste materials. The large amount of biowaste generated causes serious problems on a global scale. The majority of waste produced is recycled, disposed of, or left untreated in landfills. Methane gas produced by organic waste in landfills contributes to the greenhouse impact and creates issues with leachate and odor. Furthermore, as these organic wastes decompose in landfills, toxic substances that produce unpleasant aromas and contaminate soil and aquatic habitats are discharged. The shortcomings of the traditional approach have put pressure on the waste management, farming, and industrial sectors to develop environmentally friendly ways to handle these biodegradable wastes with less pollution. According to the latest survey, the most generated biowaste was rice hull. Rice hull powder (RHP) needs some modifications for extensive applications as filler materials. By using a one-step hydrothermal process, the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were generated and mixed with rice hull powder. The modified rice hull powder (MRHP) was characterized by FTIR, XRD, FESEM, EDX, and thermal analysis. Through the FESEM image, the presence of small spherical-shaped particles clarifies the presence of in-situ generated AgNPs. FTIR study reveals that there is no chemical interaction between silver nanoparticles and RHP observed while generation of MRHP. The Xrd image signifies the presence of a broad hump along with a few sharp peaks clarifies that the semi-crystalline nature of MRHP. The MRHP records a slight increase in maximum inflection temperature at 365 °C due to the addition of thermally stable silver nanoparticles with 28.5 percent of the remaining residual mass. The addition of silver nanoparticles makes the MRHP has significantly improved the diameter of the zone of inhibition by 27.6 mm to 30.7 mm. This impressive change in properties suggests that the MRHP can be utilized as filler along with polymer matrices for high thermal applications.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles are synthesized using a biological reduction method, with Cassia alata extract serving as both a reducing agent and a metallo‐surfactant for stabilization. Factors such as pH, plant extract concentration, and temperature influence nanoparticle formation. The nanoparticles show effective reduction, dye degradation, and mercury sensing abilities, which are confirmed by HRTEM, FE‐SEM, EDS, and EDAX analyses. A biological reduction method for silver nanoparticles was employed using Cassia alata extract from plant leaves, which functions as a reducing agent and the metallo‐surfactant [Co(dqn)2(C12H27N)2]3+ (dqn = dipyrido[3,2‐f:2′,3′‐h]‐quinoxaline; C12H27N)2 = dodecylamine) acting as both stabilizing and capping agent. The ratio of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) formation was adjusted to be equal to the amount of AgNO3, along with variations in the amount of plant leaf extract, the metallo‐surfactant, pH, surrounding temperature, and the length of interaction periods. High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM), energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and energy‐dispersive X‐ray analysis (EDAX) were used to confirm the formation of AgNPs. The infrared results indicate the presence of hydroxyl, amine, and carboxylate groups in the extract plays a crucial role in the reduction process. Additionally, the metallo‐surfactant acts as a capping agent for the silver nanoparticles, preventing agglomeration. By adjusting the acidity of the solution and the quantity of the additive metallo‐surface active agent utilized, the size of AgNPs can be precisely regulated. The relativistic effects observed in this metallo‐surfactant‐assisted silver nanoparticle demonstrate excellent reduction capabilities for nitro compounds, effective dye degradation, and mercury sensing applications.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Rice husk is an abundant agricultural biomass and a potential source of amorphous silica and porous silicon. To produce high-purity SiO2 and Si from rice husks, multiple steps of acid leaching to remove impurities and heat treatment to reduce residual carbon are necessary. In this study, a simple mechanochemical (magnesio-milling) experiment was conducted using an attrition mill to convert rice husk ash (RHA) and gasifier-derived rice husk ash (GRHA) into porous Si under various acid leaching (hydrochloric acid and lactic acid) and heat-treatment conditions. Three noteworthy results were obtained. First, eco-friendly lactic acid can be used instead of the harmful acid (hydrochloric acid). Next, the heat-treated GRHA was converted to Si via magnesio-milling without acid leaching. Finally, the carbon content (<0.3 wt%) of RHA and GRHA is a key factor affecting the conversion of SiO2 into Si based on elemental analysis. The purities of the Si samples prepared from RHA and GRHA, analyzed using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) mass spectrometry, were 97.66% and 95.62%, respectively. Furthermore, the porous Si prepared using RHA and GRHA can be utilized as a high value-add material such as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries and nanostructured materials.

Abstract:The size of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and loading amount of Ag NPs onto their substrate/carrier are two key factors for their efficient applications. Herein, we present a facile method for in situ synthesizing ultrafine and highly loaded Ag NPs on the surface of tannin-coated catechol-formaldehyde resin (TA-CFR) nanospheres. TA-CFR nanospheres act as green and highly efficient reducing agents for converting silver ions (Ag + ) into Ag NPs, and the size of resultant Ag NPs is only ∼ 7.5 nm, and the Ag NPs loading capacity of TA-CFR is as high as 61.5 wt%, both of which contribute to the very high specific surface area of Ag NPs. Consequently, the as-synthesized composites show high catalytic performance, and the catalytic rate for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol is almost 10 times higher than that of the control. Meanwhile, composites also possess high antibacterial activity, efficiently inhibiting the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) . Furthermore, tannin coating (thickness: ∼ 15 nm) minimizes the aggregation of Ag NPs, and enhances the reusability and stability of resultant Ag NPs, because of their high surface charges (the zeta potential is up to −65.5 ± 1.9 mV) and strong coordination capability with Ag NPs. This work provides a new frontier to develop multifunctional nanomaterials focusing on the green catalyst synthesis and environmental-remedy applications.

Abstract:Nanostructured mesoporous materials of MCM-41 type were synthesized using a natural, non-toxic, and cheap source of silica from rice husk. Then, this pure silica was modified with several Fe loadings by a wet impregnation method. The chemical and physic properties of MCM-41 solids obtained were similar to those of MCM-41 synthesized from commercial silica by conventional method. Thus, all catalysts exhibited good structural regularity preserving the mesoporosity after the metal incorporation. The performance of the Fe/MCM-RHA composites as photo-Fenton heterogeneous catalysts was evaluated for photocatalytic degradation of different endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), such as herbicides (atrazine), and compounds derived from the plastic industry (bisphenol A) and the pharmaceutical industry (acetaminophen). The major photo-catalytic efficiency obtained (Fe/MCM-RHA(2.5)) is consistent with the highest presence of iron species, which are finely dispersed and stabilized on the silica structure, the isolated Fe3+ ions being the accessible and active sites for the reaction. Finally, a cheaper solid arising from the valorization of residual biomass and with excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of EDCs (above 99%, 75%, and 60% for BPA, ATZ, and ACE respectively, in a reaction time of 240 min) was obtained.

Abstract:The production valuable materials from waste for environmental treatment have attracted considerable attention worldwide. In this study, porous silica was produced from the ash of rice straw pellets. The porous silica was then modified with chitosan (CS) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to produce novel CS/SiO 2 -EDTA nanocomposites for the removal of heavy metals in aqueous medium. The adsorption of Pb 2+ was investigated to evaluate the effectiveness of the composite and the effects of reaction parameters on the adsorption process were extensively explored. The adsorption is fast in the initial 5 min, then almost reaches equilibrium in 10 min. The conditions for the highest adsorption capacity are an EDTA content of 1.0 M, a pH of 6, an adsorbent dosage of 0.1 g/L, and a Pb 2+ concentration of 100 ppm. The removal efficiency, adsorption capacity, and rate constant are 70.39 %, 703.9 ± 21.1 mg/g, and 0.012 ± 0.003 g/mg·min, respectively. The conditions for the highest adsorption efficiency are an EDTA content of 1.0 M, a pH of 6, an adsorbent dosage of 0.5 g/L, and a Pb 2+ concentration of 40 ppm, where the adsorption efficiency, adsorption capacity, and rate constant are 89.88 %, 71.91 ± 1.86 mg/g, and 0.013 ± 0.002 g/mg·min, respectively. The selectivity of the composite was investigated by using Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ and Fe 2+ ions under the same experimental conditions. In multi-metal solutions, the adsorbent showed the highest affinity for Pb 2+ . In addition, the adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics were investigated and an adsorption mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:More than 60% of India's population relies on agriculture as their primary source of income, making it the nation's most important economic sector. Rice husk (often abbreviated as RH) is one of the most typical by-products of agricultural production. Every five tonnes of rice that is harvested results in the production of one tonne of husk. The concept of recycling and reusing waste from agricultural production has received interest from a variety of environmental and industrial perspectives. A wide variety of nanomaterials, including nano-zeolite, nanocarbon, and nano-silica, have been discovered in agro-waste. From rice cultivation to the finished product, there was a by-product consisting of husk that comprised 20% of the overall weight, or RH. The percentage of silica in RH ash ranges from 60 to 40%, with the remaining percentage consisting of various minerals. As a direct consequence of this, several distinct approaches to generating and extracting nanomaterial from rice husk have been developed. Because it contains a significant amount of cellulose and lignin, RH is an excellent and economical source of carbon precursor. The goal of this chapter is to produce carbon-based nanomaterials from RH.

Abstract:The escalating demand for metallic nanoparticles (Nps) is propelled by their expanding utility in environmental and biomedical disciplines. To enhance the efficiency of wastewater treatment, nanotechnology, renowned for its environmentally friendly properties, has been strategically employed. Nano-metals, distinguished for their photocatalytic and antimicrobial capabilities, were harnessed in this investigation. A biochemical synthesis method involving the green synthesis of environmentally friendly and non-toxic AgNps, utilizing Myrtus communis leaf extract, was implemented. The subsequent immobilization of these synthesized nanoparticles into corn husk fibers facilitated the photocatalytic degradation of Crystal Violet dye, yielding an impressive 96 % removal efficiency. The optimization of methodologies using Central Composite Design was validated through ANOVA. Surface properties were comprehensively assessed through SEM-EDS and FT-IR analyses, while crystal structure elucidation was achieved via XRD analysis. The synthesized AgNps showcased notable antioxidant activity, registering 90.61 % efficacy even at a modest concentration of 100 mg/L. Microdilution assays underscored the consequential antibacterial and antifungal activities against diverse microorganisms. Notably, AgNps exhibited substantial antibiofilm efficacy, reaching peak rates of 89.63 % and 81.75 % against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa at 20 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, E. coli cell viability was markedly impeded, displaying a 95.87 % reduction compared to the control at a concentration of 20 mg/L. In summation, AgNps manifest noteworthy antimicrobial, antioxidant, cell viability, and antidiabetic potential. Their integration into photocatalytic processes offers a nuanced strategy for environmental remediation, coupling heightened pollutant degradation with inherent antibacterial attributes, thereby advancing the evolution of effective and sustainable water treatment technologies.

Abstract:The unique hierarchical structures over multiple length scales (micrometer-to-nanometer levels) possessed by the natural biosubstances make them to be ideal substrates for the syntheses of functional nanostructured artificial materials. In this work, nanostructured silicon/carbon and silica/carbon nanocomposites derived from rice husks were obtained, which showed enhanced electrochemical performances as being employed as anodic materials for lithium-ion batteries. The homogeneous silicon/carbon composite was synthesized via a one-pot carbonization/magnesiothermic-reduction process of the rice husk, which was composed of fine silicon nanocrystals embedded in the carbon matrix. As being applied as an anodic material, it delivered a high reversible capacity of 560 mAh g(-1) as cycled at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) over 180 cycles with good structural stability. Direct carbonization of the rice husk resulted in the silica/carbon nanocomposite, and it was found that, as being employed as an anodic material, the higher carbonization temperature led to better electrochemical performances such as the cycling stability (650 mAh g(-1) after 150 cycles at 100 mA g(-1) for the sample carbonized at 900 degrees C) and rate capacity. Silver nanoparticles were further composited with the silicon/carbon and silica/carbon hybrids to make the corresponding ternary nanocomposites, resulting in improved electrochemical performances.

Abstract:Heavy metals are micropollutants, persist in the environment and accumulate in organisms, causing adverse effects to ecosystem. Synthetic inorganic minerals, polymers, activated carbon, ash, char, biomass powders, shells, etc. are used as adsorbents to remove the heavy metals in aqueous medium. Advancements in nanotechnology and green chemistry focus on novel materials for efficient removal of heavy metals. Among the different interesting nanomaterials, Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) have recently emerged as an important nanomaterial used for environmental remediation due to their tractable pore size, distinct surface area, surface reactivity, outstanding biocompatibility, structural flexibility, stability, low toxicity, and adoptable surface modification. Due to the huge availability of biomass, SiNPs synthesis from crop residues and agro-industries waste by-products has been widely suggested. The SiNPs could be synthesized from agro-waste through calcination, sol-gel, ball milling, etc. Some of the SiNPs produced from certain agro-waste recorded a specific surface area of 5 to 653 m 2 g -1 with a particle size of sub-50 nm. These SiNPs remove a wide range of heavy metals, viz., Cr, Ni, Pb, Cd, As, Hg, Zn, etc., from aqueous solutions with varied concentrations. This review briefly discusses various agro-waste sources for SiNPs green synthesis and SiNPs heavy metal adsorption.

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) have already been widely used in catalysis, antibacterial and coating fields.Compared with the traditional toxic and harmful reducing reagents, green synthesis of NPs by using plant extracts is not only environmental-friendly and cost-effective but also conducive to the multi-level and efficient utilization of wild plant resources.In this study, the aqueous extracts from Sorbus pohuashanensis (SP) and Aronia melanocarpa (AM) fruits were used as the reducing and protective reagents for synthesizing Au/AgNPs, with the characteristics of originality operation and high repeatability.The SP/AM fruit extracts functionalized Au/AgNPs were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy (UV-vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).UV-vis spectrums showed the NPs peaks verified by the presence between 400-550 nm; TEM and SEM demonstrated NPs displayed approximately spherical structures; EDS confirmed the existence of Au/Ag elements; XRD measurements confirmed that the obtained NPs showed highly crystalline structures; FTIR demonstrated the fruits extracts were adsorbed on the surface of NPs.Primary experiments indicated that SP/AM fruit extracts functionalized-NPs could be used as the reagents for removing the organic dyes efficiently; Zone of inhibition tests (ZOI) explained that NPs have slow-release antibacterial activity.
