Abstract:The amplitude and phase imbalances of the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) branches inherent in the direct conversion receiver structure cause the generation of image frequency interference signals. In this paper, a frequency-domain I/Q imbalance calibration algorithm is proposed for wideband direct conversion receivers. The I/Q imbalance model is rebuilt by applying the infinitesimal method and FFT algorithm. The mathematical expressions for the exact computation of the I/Q imbalance parameters are derived based on the frequency-domain statistical properties of the baseband signal. The two phase parameters, frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance (FD-IQI) and frequency-independent I/Q imbalance (FI-IQI), are separated according to the parity properties of the imbalance parameter. To avoid the interference from the transmitter, the receiver impairment estimation is performed using a frequency offset (FO) DC training signal, and a low-cost real-valued compensation (RVC) filter is introduced to correct the impairments of the received signal. The performances of the proposed calibration model are evaluated through simulations and experiments. The simulation results show that the image rejection ratio (IRR) is improved to 80-120 dBc and can also exceed 40 dBc at high noise levels. The experimental results based on the CX9261A evaluation board show that the average IRR of the multi-tone signal is increased by 24.99 dB, and the IRR of the wideband signal is increased by 19.08 dB.

Abstract:I/Q imbalance and carrier frequency offset (CFO) are two typical radio frequency (RF) circuit analog impairments in wireless communication systems, and degrade the system performance severely. In this paper, we propose a novel Kalman filtering based compensation scheme for I/Q imbalance and CFO in time-varying MIMO OFDM systems. To circumvent CFO and track time variations of wireless communication channels, the CFO is absorbed into the state vector of the equivalent channel model. Moreover, the inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by phase shift of the cyclic prefix (CP) in the equivalent system is removed by decision feedback filtering, which allows low complexity compensation on each subcarrier independently. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can compensate for I/Q imbalance and CFO effectively and is robust again time variations.

Abstract:In this paper, a simplified Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure (SG) method was proposed for in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance compensation based on the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure (GSOP) algorithm. The proposed method can compensate IQ imbalance in the optical coherent system by two steps of phase orthogonalization and amplitude balance. In addition, this method avoids square root operation compared to the GSOP in the field programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware implementation, therefore it is easier to implement in terms of resources and complexity. Two steady states are achieved by accumulating scale factor to reduce resource consumption in FPGA hardware implementation of the proposed scheme. Finally, a FPGA design with 32 parallel units is performed to demonstrate the proposed method in a polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PM-QPSK) system, the results show the proposed algorithm simplifies FPGA implementation complexity and maintains compensation performance comparable to GSOP algorithms.

Abstract:This paper investigates carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation and inphase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance compensation in time-varying frequency-selective channels. We first propose a linear least squares (LLS) CFO estimation approach which has a lower complexity and a higher accuracy than the previous nonlinear CFO estimation methods. We then propose a Kalman filtering based I/Q imbalance compensation approach in the presence of CFO, which demonstrates a good ability to track the channel time variations with a fast convergence speed, by nulling the cyclic prefix (CP) and including the CFO in the state vector of the equivalent channel model. The proposed Kalman filtering based I/Q imbalance compensation approach with associated equalization tracks the time variation with a fast convergence speed. Simulation results show that the proposed compensation approach for CFO and I/Q imbalance provides a bit error rate (BER) performance close to the ideal case with perfect channel state information (CSI), no CFO and no I/Q imbalance.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an adaptive compensation algorithm to reduce the strong frequency-dependent in-phase/quadrature phase (IQ) imbalance in wideband direct-conversion receivers without using training data. Firstly, we propose an frequency-dependent IQ imbalance model by inserting a finite impulse response (FIR) filter to the Q-channel to represent the frequency-dependent characteristics. Subsequently, by using the properness condition as well as the equi-absolute variance condition, we derive a blind frequency-dependent IQ imbalance compensation algorithm based on this model. Finally, simulations with 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals are conducted, and the results show that even for strong frequency-dependent IQ imbalance, the proposed algorithm still provides impressive performances in correcting distortion and reducing the symbol error rate (SER) as well as the error vector magnitude (EVM).

Abstract:We report on a simple alternative method for the compensation of quadrature imbalance in optical quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) coherent systems. By introducing a new metric, the phase imbalance can be determined and compensated. The proposed method is theoretically and numerically analyzed. In particular, it is shown that the method exhibits a small bias of estimated phase imbalance value. Thanks to its deterministic property, this bias can be simply compensated by incorporating at the receiver a phase rotator (or phase shift) whose value can be determined based on an analytical analysis. Moreover, the algorithm is also experimentally validated through bit-error-rate and error vector magnitude (EVM) measurements. A good agreement on the performance of the proposed method with that of the Gram–Schmidt orthogonalization procedure is shown in a 20-Gbit/s optical QPSK experiment. The robustness of both methods was verified with up to 30∘$$30^\circ $$ phase imbalance by comparing the signal with and without phase imbalance compensation. A 10% reduction in EVM is achieved with our method for a high phase imbalance of 30∘$$30^\circ $$, while the implementation complexity can be reduced owing to the suppression of the use of square-root operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the impact of quadrature imbalance (QI) in the presence of frequency offset in an optical coherent offset quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK) receiver. Arbitrary conjugate misalignment was realized in a 2×4 90° optical hybrid, and the ellipse correction (EC) method of quadrature imbalance was applied in our simulation. In the case of transmission, the EC method can significantly improve the system performance.

Abstract:This study addresses the problem of in‐phase and quadratic‐phase (IQ) imbalance in digital transmitter and receiver communication systems. Recently, several adaptive and non‐adaptive solutions to this problem have been proposed. In this study, an adaptive solution to this problem is given. The authors propose a new robust two‐channel adaptive algorithm to compensate the IQ imbalance problem of quadratic receivers. The new algorithm is based on the combination between the backward blind source separation (BBSS) structure and the fast Newton transversal filter (FNTF) technique to form a two‐channel algorithm that cancels the noisy IQ signal adaptively. The combination of the Newton recursion of the FNTF algorithm with the BBSS principle shows the efficiency of the new algorithm to enhance the output signal to interference ratio and allows distortion correction at the output. Simulation results show the efficiency of the new algorithm to compensate the IQ imbalance problem in comparison with the conventional two‐channel normalised least mean square algorithm.

Abstract:The frequency offset estimation (FOE) schemes based on Kalman filter are proposed and investigated in detail via numerical simulation and experiment. The schemes consist of a modulation phase removing stage and Kalman filter estimation stage. In the second stage, the Kalman filters are employed for tracking either differential angles or differential data between two successive symbols. Several implementations of the proposed FOE scheme are compared by employing different modulation removing methods and two Kalman algorithms. The optimal FOE implementation is suggested for different operating conditions including optical signal-to-noise ratio and the number of the available data symbols. Abstract:A joint compensation scheme based on pilot symbols aiding adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) for phase noise and polarization cross-talk is proposed and investigated via numerical simulation and experimental demonstration. In the proposed scheme, the optimizing parameter Q is adaptively adjusted according to signal parameters or channel conditions. This improvement avoids the drawback of conventional extended Kalman filter (EKF), and its performance is strongly dependent on Q. Another improvement is that the convergence speed of AKF is improved. Pilot quadrature phase shift keyin (QPSK) symbols are inserted into 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals periodically. Besides accelerating convergence speed, the employment of pilot symbols also improves the tracking capability of AKF. The format ratio between pilot symbols and payload symbols is suggested under different system environments, for instance, optical signal-to-noise rate, polarization rotation frequency drift rate, and laser linewidth. With the proposed scheme, it has excellent tolerance to initial parameter Q and dramatically improves the performances in convergence speed, polarization rotation frequency drift rate tracking, and carrier phase recovery. Both the numerical simulation and experimental demonstration achieve convergence improvement for around 40 times than the original AKF. Additionally, the improvements in tracking ability are also demonstrated.

Abstract:A phase noise compensation algorithm based on joint estimation of Kalman filtering (KF) in time and frequency domains is proposed aiming at higher-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) based incoherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system with large linewidth. Training symbols and pilot sequences in time domain are set in the transmitter. Frequency domain Kalman filtering is carried out based on training symbols at the receiver, and channel estimation value is obtained. Rough estimate value of phase noise is obtained with time domain extended Kalman filtering (EKF). The estimation value of phase noise in time domain is plural, and in order to obtain better compensation results, every OFDM symbol is divided into several sub-symbols according to the number of pilot sequences. Time domain EKF is carried out at the positions of pilot sequences. Rough estimation value of phase noise of every sampling point is obtained with linear interpolation at the last pilot of every sub-symbol. Predecision of frequency domain data after rough phase noise compensation and time domain phase noise fine compensation are carried out. Numerical simulation is performed by the proposed algorithm for CO-OFDM system with transmission rate of 50 Gbit· s_1 and transmission distance of 100 km. Results show that the compensation results achieved by the proposed method are better than that of other methods. When CO-OFDM system is with 16QAM and a laser linewidth of 1 MHz or with 32QAM and a laser linewidth of 800 kHz, bit error rate can reach the upper limit of forward error correction.

Abstract:A joint compensation scheme based on cascaded Kalman filter is proposed, which can implement polarization tracking, channel equalization, frequency offset, and phase noise compensation simultaneously. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can not only compensate multiple channel impairments simultaneously but also improve the polarization tracking capacity and accelerate the convergence speed. The scheme has up to eight times faster convergence speed compared with radius-directed equalizer (RDE) + Max-FFT (maximum fast Fourier transform) + BPS (blind phase search) and can track up polarization rotation 60 times and 15 times faster than that of RDE + Max-FFT + BPS and CMMA (cascaded multimodulus algorithm) + Max-FFT + BPS, respectively. Abstract:In this paper, we propose an in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance estimation scheme for mixed transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) IQ imbalance in the optical coherent transmission system. The proposed scheme is based on traditional IQ imbalance compensation algorithm Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure (GSOP) and the proposed geometric construction method (GCM). In the actual transmission system, frequency offset (FO) and phase noise (PN) are recognized as part of received signal, which has an effect on the estimation of IQ imbalance. At the beginning of the proposed scheme, the GSOP algorithm is used to estimate and compensate Rx IQ imbalance according to the statistical characteristics of the received signal, then standard frequency offset compensation algorithm and k-means clustering aided blind phase search (BPS) algorithm are used to compensate FO and PN respectively. Finally, the proposed method GCM is used to estimate Tx IQ imbalance. 34 Gbaud QPSK and 16QAM signals are experimentally performed to demonstrate the proposed IQ imbalance estimation scheme, the results show the proposed scheme has accurate estimation capability with low estimation algorithm complexity.

Abstract:A low cost frequency-dependent (FD) I/Q imbalance self-compensation scheme is investigated in this paper. The direct conversion transmitters are widely used in wireless systems. However, the unwanted image-frequencies and distortions are inevitably introduced into the direct conversion system. This problem is even severer in wideband systems. Therefore, the accurate estimation and compensation of I/Q imbalance is crucial. The current compensation method is based on external instruments or internal feedback path which introduces additional impairments and is expensive. This paper proposes a low cost FD I/Q imbalance self-IQ-demodulation based compensation scheme without using external calibration instruments. First, the impairments of baseband and RF components are investigated. Further, I/Q imbalance model is developed. Then, the proposed two-step self-IQ-demodulation based compensation scheme is investigated. In the first step of the scheme, the local oscillator (LO) related I/Q impairments parameters are estimated. Then in the second step, the overall FD I/Q imbalance parameters are estimated by utilizing the transmitter LO. To realize this self-IQ-demodulation algorithm, this paper introduces minor modifications to the current power detector circuit. Afterwards, the estimated parameters are applied to the baseband equivalent compensator. This sophisticated algorithm guarantees low computation complexity and low cost. The compensation performance is evaluated in laboratory measurement.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel computationally simple calibration scheme for in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance through adaptation algorithm in wideband transceiver. IQ imbalances are divided into frequency-independent (FI) and frequency dependent (FD) caused by up/down mixers and baseband low-pass filters (LPFs) respectively. The proposed compensation scheme is based on separately calibrating FI and FD IQ imbalance. First, a novel calibration structure is introduced, and we use least mean square algorithm to calibrate baseband LPFs. Then, all IQ imbalances are transformed into frequency independent, and conventional algorithm is used to calibrate FI IQ imbalance. Compared with existing schemes, the simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can achieve higher image rejection ratio and lower hardware computational complexity.
