Abstract:The amplitude and phase imbalances of the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) branches inherent in the direct conversion receiver structure cause the generation of image frequency interference signals. In this paper, a frequency-domain I/Q imbalance calibration algorithm is proposed for wideband direct conversion receivers. The I/Q imbalance model is rebuilt by applying the infinitesimal method and FFT algorithm. The mathematical expressions for the exact computation of the I/Q imbalance parameters are derived based on the frequency-domain statistical properties of the baseband signal. The two phase parameters, frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance (FD-IQI) and frequency-independent I/Q imbalance (FI-IQI), are separated according to the parity properties of the imbalance parameter. To avoid the interference from the transmitter, the receiver impairment estimation is performed using a frequency offset (FO) DC training signal, and a low-cost real-valued compensation (RVC) filter is introduced to correct the impairments of the received signal. The performances of the proposed calibration model are evaluated through simulations and experiments. The simulation results show that the image rejection ratio (IRR) is improved to 80-120 dBc and can also exceed 40 dBc at high noise levels. The experimental results based on the CX9261A evaluation board show that the average IRR of the multi-tone signal is increased by 24.99 dB, and the IRR of the wideband signal is increased by 19.08 dB.

Abstract:A joint compensation scheme based on cascaded Kalman filter is proposed, which can implement polarization tracking, channel equalization, frequency offset, and phase noise compensation simultaneously. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can not only compensate multiple channel impairments simultaneously but also improve the polarization tracking capacity and accelerate the convergence speed. The scheme has up to eight times faster convergence speed compared with radius-directed equalizer (RDE) + Max-FFT (maximum fast Fourier transform) + BPS (blind phase search) and can track up polarization rotation 60 times and 15 times faster than that of RDE + Max-FFT + BPS and CMMA (cascaded multimodulus algorithm) + Max-FFT + BPS, respectively. Abstract:In this paper, joint estimation for channel and Inphase/Quadrature imbalance (IQI) is investigated in the downlink Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. First, exploiting the sparsity of massive MIMO channels and the timescale separation of channels and IQI, we derive a two-timescale sparse maximum a posterior (MAP) formulation for the joint estimation, where the IQI parameter is the long- term variable and the sparse channel is the short- term variable. Then we propose a two-timescale online joint sparse estimation (TOJSE) algorithm to solve the problem, which can converge to the stationary solutions of the original two-timescale non-convex stochastic optimization problem over time. Finally, simulations show that our proposed TOJSE algorithm can achieve significant gain over various baselines.

Abstract:In this paper, a simplified Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure (SG) method was proposed for in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance compensation based on the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure (GSOP) algorithm. The proposed method can compensate IQ imbalance in the optical coherent system by two steps of phase orthogonalization and amplitude balance. In addition, this method avoids square root operation compared to the GSOP in the field programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware implementation, therefore it is easier to implement in terms of resources and complexity. Two steady states are achieved by accumulating scale factor to reduce resource consumption in FPGA hardware implementation of the proposed scheme. Finally, a FPGA design with 32 parallel units is performed to demonstrate the proposed method in a polarization multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PM-QPSK) system, the results show the proposed algorithm simplifies FPGA implementation complexity and maintains compensation performance comparable to GSOP algorithms.

Abstract:Due to the non-ideality of analog components, transmitters (TXs) and receivers (RXs) suffer from hardware impairments such as in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance, which manifests itself as the mismatches of amplitude, phase and frequency response between I/Q branches. Without compensation, I/Q imbalance can severely degrade the system performance. This paper addresses the joint compensation of TX and RX I/Q imbalances for single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) systems. Specifically, we develop an expectation maximization (EM) based approach to separately estimate TX and RX I/Q imbalances, and the multipath channel. With the obtained estimates, we can readily fulfill the compensation of I/Q imbalances. Unlike previous methods, which only estimate the combined effect of I/Q imbalances and the multipath channel, we are able to obtain the separate estimates of the TX I/Q imbalance, the RX I/Q imbalance and the multipath channel. This will significantly alleviate the computation burden of the proposed compensation scheme in the long run. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the counterparts, and can significantly mitigate the adverse effects of I/Q imbalances.

Abstract:I/Q imbalance and carrier frequency offset (CFO) are two typical radio frequency (RF) circuit analog impairments in wireless communication systems, and degrade the system performance severely. In this paper, we propose a novel Kalman filtering based compensation scheme for I/Q imbalance and CFO in time-varying MIMO OFDM systems. To circumvent CFO and track time variations of wireless communication channels, the CFO is absorbed into the state vector of the equivalent channel model. Moreover, the inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by phase shift of the cyclic prefix (CP) in the equivalent system is removed by decision feedback filtering, which allows low complexity compensation on each subcarrier independently. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can compensate for I/Q imbalance and CFO effectively and is robust again time variations.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the I/Q imbalance effect of wireless communication systems at the transmitter side and the novel transmitter I/Q imbalance parameters estimation and signal pre-compensation schemes are proposed. The I/Q imbalance parameters estimation of the transmitter is based on the statistical properties of the in-phase and quadrature-phase parts of the signals. The pre-compensation scheme feedbacks the estimated imbalance parameters to the pre-compensation block and the pre-compensation block apply the offsets to the In-phase and quadrature-phase parts of the original low intermediate frequency (LIF) signal before they pass through the up-convertor of the transmitter and the outcome modulated radio frequency (RF) signal will be recovered. Both the signals for the estimation and pre-compensation are low intermediate frequency signals so the estimation and pre-compensation schemes can be realized in the digital domain. Computer simulations are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed schemes. It is shown that the proposed schemes are reliable and feasible for practical implementation.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an adaptive compensation algorithm to reduce the strong frequency-dependent in-phase/quadrature phase (IQ) imbalance in wideband direct-conversion receivers without using training data. Firstly, we propose an frequency-dependent IQ imbalance model by inserting a finite impulse response (FIR) filter to the Q-channel to represent the frequency-dependent characteristics. Subsequently, by using the properness condition as well as the equi-absolute variance condition, we derive a blind frequency-dependent IQ imbalance compensation algorithm based on this model. Finally, simulations with 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals are conducted, and the results show that even for strong frequency-dependent IQ imbalance, the proposed algorithm still provides impressive performances in correcting distortion and reducing the symbol error rate (SER) as well as the error vector magnitude (EVM).

Abstract:This study addresses the problem of in‐phase and quadratic‐phase (IQ) imbalance in digital transmitter and receiver communication systems. Recently, several adaptive and non‐adaptive solutions to this problem have been proposed. In this study, an adaptive solution to this problem is given. The authors propose a new robust two‐channel adaptive algorithm to compensate the IQ imbalance problem of quadratic receivers. The new algorithm is based on the combination between the backward blind source separation (BBSS) structure and the fast Newton transversal filter (FNTF) technique to form a two‐channel algorithm that cancels the noisy IQ signal adaptively. The combination of the Newton recursion of the FNTF algorithm with the BBSS principle shows the efficiency of the new algorithm to enhance the output signal to interference ratio and allows distortion correction at the output. Simulation results show the efficiency of the new algorithm to compensate the IQ imbalance problem in comparison with the conventional two‐channel normalised least mean square algorithm.

CNN-Based Auto Fully-Digital Compensation Method for User Equipment with IQ Imbalance

Abstract:IQ imbalance (IQI) of radio-frequency (RF) Chains is one of the key factors that limits the performance of wireless communications systems, especially in high order modulation modes. Traditional methods usually estimate the IQI parameters with dedicated feedback circuits and compensate the distortion of RF Chains with extra compensation circuits. Moreover, they do not consider the random carrier phase shift between transceivers, which increases the difficulty of estimating IQI parameters. In the paper, we propose a CNN-based auto fully-digital calibration technique with no dedicated feedback and compensation circuits to compensate for IQI and the random phase shift. We train the CNN using the pilot signals to obtain the compensation matrix. Since only the pilot signal is adopted, the algorithm can work with current wireless communications systems automatically. Compared to user equipment (UE) with ideal RF chains, the simulation results show that our algorithm can help UEs with IQI and the random phase shift achieve similar performance even in 1024-QAM modulation mode.

Abstract:For direct-conversion transceiver, IQ imbalance is significant at both transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX), which brings in image interference and degrades the transmission quality. In order to handle this problem, the maximum-likelihood algorithm is employed to jointly estimate TX and RX IQ imbalance, and the corresponding Cramer–Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) are calculated. Furthermore, a compensation mechanism is proposed to combat IQ imbalance, which is derived from the criterion of maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (MSINR). In addition, comprehensive simulations indicate that the mean square errors of the proposed estimation coincide with the CRLBs. Also, the proposed MSINR compensation achieves competitive performance, in terms of both SINR and bit error rate.

Abstract:The performance degradation of digital receivers caused by I/Q gain and phase imbalances is improved by a method to estimate and compensate for I/Q imbalances based on the power and orthogonality relationships between the in-phase and quadrature channels of the time domain data.Both of the estimates and the compensation are carried out in the time domain which allows for a flexible tradeoff between computational complexity,estimation time and compensation performance.Because the estimation of the I/Q imbalance does not need any pilots or training sequence,this technique is applicable to a wide range of single-carrier and/or multi-carrier communication and broadcasting systems.Simulations of a 64QAM-OFDM system show that this technique can achieve the optimal bit error rate(BER) performance under AWGN channel,and can reduce the performance degradation to about 0.1 dB when the BER is 10-3 under frequency-selective fading channel.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel computationally simple calibration scheme for in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance through adaptation algorithm in wideband transceiver. IQ imbalances are divided into frequency-independent (FI) and frequency dependent (FD) caused by up/down mixers and baseband low-pass filters (LPFs) respectively. The proposed compensation scheme is based on separately calibrating FI and FD IQ imbalance. First, a novel calibration structure is introduced, and we use least mean square algorithm to calibrate baseband LPFs. Then, all IQ imbalances are transformed into frequency independent, and conventional algorithm is used to calibrate FI IQ imbalance. Compared with existing schemes, the simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can achieve higher image rejection ratio and lower hardware computational complexity.

Abstract:I/Q imbalance, which is one of the radio frequency (RF) circuit impairments in direct conversion transmitter and receiver, introduces severe performance degradation in wireless communication systems. In this paper, we propose a novel blind compensation algorithm for both frequency-dependent and frequency-independent I/Q imbalance based on independent component analysis (ICA) in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, where ICA, an efficient higher order statistics (HOS) based blind source separation technique, is applied to compensate for I/Q imbalance and equalize the received signals simultaneously. Moreover, preceding is employed to resolve the ambiguity in the ICA output signals. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can not only compensate for I/Q imbalance effectively, but also achieve frequency diversity gains and outperform the case with perfect channel state information (CSI) and no I/Q imbalance.

Abstract:In the wideband wireless systems, the frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance is a severe impairment which decreases the communication quality. We propose a blind calibration scheme for compensating the I/Q imbalance in transmitters. The parameter estimation makes use of the second-order statistics of the signals. And a closed-form solution is obtained. The compensation structure consists of two parts, corresponding to the frequency-dependent imbalance and the frequency-independent imbalance respectively. The simulation results demonstrate the excellent performance of the method. The average IRR of compensated signal can achieve 54dB, which improves about 30dB compared with uncompensated signal. Besides, the robustness of the proposed method is proved by the simulation as well.

Abstract:We propose a noise adaptive Kalman filter for joint polarization tracking and channel equalization using cascaded covariance matching. With the process noise covariance (Q) and the measurement noise covariance (R) estimated in a cascaded manner, the proposed Kalman filter scheme can be implemented in adaptive mode. The experimental results demonstrate that in wide range of OSNR and polarization rotation, the scheme can adaptively configure noise covariance parameters and consequently can achieve optimal performance even in long transmission cases. Besides, the scheme is more robust against the initial errors in Q and R compared to nonadaptive filter and R/Q-adaptive algorithms with the allowable initial values of Q and R within 6 and 9 magnitudes, respectively.

Abstract:For wideband receiver systems, it is challenging to compensate the in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) phase mismatch by traditional methods, especially with a time delay deviation (TDD) between the I/Q channels. Considering the above situation, this paper proposes a full-scale I/Q phase imbalance model concerning TDD. The model divides phase mismatch into two parts, i.e., the linear phase (LP) part and the nonlinear phase part, and compensates each part with the corresponding compensation module separately. The design strategy of the compensation module is innovatively transformed into a constrained nonlinear optimization problem, and a metaheuristic algorithm, the flower pollination algorithm (FPA), is utilized to be the optimizer. The results of the contrast simulation with the LP elimination method show the efficiency of the proposed method. In addition, the superiority of the FPA-based structure is verified by comparing with other metaheuristic algorithms, the artificial bee colony technique, the bat algorithm, and the differential evolution algorithm, in terms of the compensation accuracy, algorithm stability, runtime consumption, and convergence performance. Ultimately, the image rejection ratio improvement on the actual platform after compensation is measured, which validates the proposed compensation structure and the corresponding optimization method practically, and the FPA is still the best choice among the competent optimizers.
