Abstract:The amplitude and phase imbalances of the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) branches inherent in the direct conversion receiver structure cause the generation of image frequency interference signals. In this paper, a frequency-domain I/Q imbalance calibration algorithm is proposed for wideband direct conversion receivers. The I/Q imbalance model is rebuilt by applying the infinitesimal method and FFT algorithm. The mathematical expressions for the exact computation of the I/Q imbalance parameters are derived based on the frequency-domain statistical properties of the baseband signal. The two phase parameters, frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance (FD-IQI) and frequency-independent I/Q imbalance (FI-IQI), are separated according to the parity properties of the imbalance parameter. To avoid the interference from the transmitter, the receiver impairment estimation is performed using a frequency offset (FO) DC training signal, and a low-cost real-valued compensation (RVC) filter is introduced to correct the impairments of the received signal. The performances of the proposed calibration model are evaluated through simulations and experiments. The simulation results show that the image rejection ratio (IRR) is improved to 80-120 dBc and can also exceed 40 dBc at high noise levels. The experimental results based on the CX9261A evaluation board show that the average IRR of the multi-tone signal is increased by 24.99 dB, and the IRR of the wideband signal is increased by 19.08 dB.

Abstract:Frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance and frequency-independent I/Q imbalance are the major impairments in wideband zero-IF receivers, and they both cannot be ignored. In this paper, a blind calibration model is designed for compensating these I/Q imbalances. In order to accurately estimate the imbalance parameters with low cost, a classification rule is proposed according to the frequency-domain statistical characteristics of the received signal. The calibration points in the frequency-domain are divided into two groups. Then, the amplitude imbalance and the frequency-dependent phase imbalance are derived from the group of signal points and, separately, the frequency-independent phase imbalance is calculated from the group of noise points. In the derivation of the frequency-dependent phase imbalance, a general fitting model suitable for all signal points is proposed, which does not require special calculations for either DC point or fs/2 point. Then, a finite impulse response (FIR) real-valued filter is designed to correct the impairments of received signal. The performances of the proposed calibration model are evaluated through both simulations and experiments. The simulation results show the image rejection ratio (IRR) improvement to around 35–45 dBc at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Based on the mismatched data of the ADRV9009 evaluation board, the experimental results exhibit the IRR improvement of both multi-tone and wideband signals to about 30 dBc.

Abstract:In this paper, joint estimation for channel and Inphase/Quadrature imbalance (IQI) is investigated in the downlink Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. First, exploiting the sparsity of massive MIMO channels and the timescale separation of channels and IQI, we derive a two-timescale sparse maximum a posterior (MAP) formulation for the joint estimation, where the IQI parameter is the long- term variable and the sparse channel is the short- term variable. Then we propose a two-timescale online joint sparse estimation (TOJSE) algorithm to solve the problem, which can converge to the stationary solutions of the original two-timescale non-convex stochastic optimization problem over time. Finally, simulations show that our proposed TOJSE algorithm can achieve significant gain over various baselines.

Abstract:A joint compensation scheme based on cascaded Kalman filter is proposed, which can implement polarization tracking, channel equalization, frequency offset, and phase noise compensation simultaneously. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can not only compensate multiple channel impairments simultaneously but also improve the polarization tracking capacity and accelerate the convergence speed. The scheme has up to eight times faster convergence speed compared with radius-directed equalizer (RDE) + Max-FFT (maximum fast Fourier transform) + BPS (blind phase search) and can track up polarization rotation 60 times and 15 times faster than that of RDE + Max-FFT + BPS and CMMA (cascaded multimodulus algorithm) + Max-FFT + BPS, respectively. Abstract:Due to the non-ideality of analog components, transmitters (TXs) and receivers (RXs) suffer from hardware impairments such as in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance, which manifests itself as the mismatches of amplitude, phase and frequency response between I/Q branches. Without compensation, I/Q imbalance can severely degrade the system performance. This paper addresses the joint compensation of TX and RX I/Q imbalances for single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) systems. Specifically, we develop an expectation maximization (EM) based approach to separately estimate TX and RX I/Q imbalances, and the multipath channel. With the obtained estimates, we can readily fulfill the compensation of I/Q imbalances. Unlike previous methods, which only estimate the combined effect of I/Q imbalances and the multipath channel, we are able to obtain the separate estimates of the TX I/Q imbalance, the RX I/Q imbalance and the multipath channel. This will significantly alleviate the computation burden of the proposed compensation scheme in the long run. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the counterparts, and can significantly mitigate the adverse effects of I/Q imbalances.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an adaptive compensation algorithm to reduce the strong frequency-dependent in-phase/quadrature phase (IQ) imbalance in wideband direct-conversion receivers without using training data. Firstly, we propose an frequency-dependent IQ imbalance model by inserting a finite impulse response (FIR) filter to the Q-channel to represent the frequency-dependent characteristics. Subsequently, by using the properness condition as well as the equi-absolute variance condition, we derive a blind frequency-dependent IQ imbalance compensation algorithm based on this model. Finally, simulations with 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals are conducted, and the results show that even for strong frequency-dependent IQ imbalance, the proposed algorithm still provides impressive performances in correcting distortion and reducing the symbol error rate (SER) as well as the error vector magnitude (EVM).

Abstract:The implementation of OFDM system suffers from the effect of phase noise and IQ imbalance, which disturb the orthogonality between subcarriers and cause intercarrier interference (10). When treated separately, effective algorithms, such as the ICI self-cancellation scheme, exist for suppression of phase noise as well as IQ imbalance. However, with both effects present, such algorithms do not lead to effective suppression. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to jointly combat the IQ imbalance and phase noise at baseband. An IQ imbalance estimation and compensation module, which is robust against phase noise, is added in the ICI self-cancellation based OFDM system. After the IQ imbalance has been compensated in the time domain, the ICI self-cancellation scheme of data-conjugate method is used to suppress the phase noise and the residual IQ imbalance. This scheme has a fast convergence and a nearly optimal BER performance even for large IQ imbalance in AWGN channel. In multipath channel, even for large IQ imbalance, this joint suppression scheme offers frequency diversity gain and as a result, the BER performance surpasses that of the conventional OFDM system without IQ imbalance and phase noise.

Abstract:I/Q imbalance and carrier frequency offset (CFO) are two typical radio frequency (RF) circuit analog impairments in wireless communication systems, and degrade the system performance severely. In this paper, we propose a novel Kalman filtering based compensation scheme for I/Q imbalance and CFO in time-varying MIMO OFDM systems. To circumvent CFO and track time variations of wireless communication channels, the CFO is absorbed into the state vector of the equivalent channel model. Moreover, the inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by phase shift of the cyclic prefix (CP) in the equivalent system is removed by decision feedback filtering, which allows low complexity compensation on each subcarrier independently. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can compensate for I/Q imbalance and CFO effectively and is robust again time variations.

Abstract:This study addresses the problem of in‐phase and quadratic‐phase (IQ) imbalance in digital transmitter and receiver communication systems. Recently, several adaptive and non‐adaptive solutions to this problem have been proposed. In this study, an adaptive solution to this problem is given. The authors propose a new robust two‐channel adaptive algorithm to compensate the IQ imbalance problem of quadratic receivers. The new algorithm is based on the combination between the backward blind source separation (BBSS) structure and the fast Newton transversal filter (FNTF) technique to form a two‐channel algorithm that cancels the noisy IQ signal adaptively. The combination of the Newton recursion of the FNTF algorithm with the BBSS principle shows the efficiency of the new algorithm to enhance the output signal to interference ratio and allows distortion correction at the output. Simulation results show the efficiency of the new algorithm to compensate the IQ imbalance problem in comparison with the conventional two‐channel normalised least mean square algorithm.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel computationally simple calibration scheme for in-phase/quadrature (IQ) imbalance through adaptation algorithm in wideband transceiver. IQ imbalances are divided into frequency-independent (FI) and frequency dependent (FD) caused by up/down mixers and baseband low-pass filters (LPFs) respectively. The proposed compensation scheme is based on separately calibrating FI and FD IQ imbalance. First, a novel calibration structure is introduced, and we use least mean square algorithm to calibrate baseband LPFs. Then, all IQ imbalances are transformed into frequency independent, and conventional algorithm is used to calibrate FI IQ imbalance. Compared with existing schemes, the simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can achieve higher image rejection ratio and lower hardware computational complexity.

Abstract:This paper investigates carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation and inphase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance compensation in time-varying frequency-selective channels. We first propose a linear least squares (LLS) CFO estimation approach which has a lower complexity and a higher accuracy than the previous nonlinear CFO estimation methods. We then propose a Kalman filtering based I/Q imbalance compensation approach in the presence of CFO, which demonstrates a good ability to track the channel time variations with a fast convergence speed, by nulling the cyclic prefix (CP) and including the CFO in the state vector of the equivalent channel model. The proposed Kalman filtering based I/Q imbalance compensation approach with associated equalization tracks the time variation with a fast convergence speed. Simulation results show that the proposed compensation approach for CFO and I/Q imbalance provides a bit error rate (BER) performance close to the ideal case with perfect channel state information (CSI), no CFO and no I/Q imbalance.

Abstract:We propose a phase-noise compensation algorithm by using radio frequency pilot (RF-Pilot) method in combination with extend Kalman filter (EKF) in time domain for the coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system with large linewidths and high-order circular quadrature amplitude modulation (C-QAM). We realize the coarse phase-noise compensation in time domain by setting a RF-Pilot at the receiver, and then complete the channel evaluation and channel balance. After accomplishing the initial pre-decision in the frequency domain, we use EKF to realize the final phase noise compensation, according to the judged temporal signal and the channel equalization temporal signal. We numerically verify the algorithm by transforming in a 50 Gb.s(-1) CO-OFDM system with 100 km transmission distance under C-16QAM and C-32QAM. The results show that compared with original RF-Pilot phase-noise compensation algorithms, the proposed method has better performance on the phase noise compensation while has no obvious decrease of frequency utilization, and the complexity is not increased significantly. For CO-OFDM systems with C-32QAM and a laser linewidth of 2.1 MHz, the bit error rate achieves the upper limit of forward error correction. It theoretically confirms that the proposed algorithm can improve the tolerance of laser linewidth on the CO-OFDM system. We can use the inexpensive distributed feedback lasers with relatively large linewidth as the source of the object and the oscillator of the receiver. The proposed phase-noise compensation algorithm is beneficial to the application of CO-OFDM system in long distance access network and metropolitan area network.

Abstract:A phase noise compensation algorithm based on joint estimation of Kalman filtering (KF) in time and frequency domains is proposed aiming at higher-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) based incoherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system with large linewidth. Training symbols and pilot sequences in time domain are set in the transmitter. Frequency domain Kalman filtering is carried out based on training symbols at the receiver, and channel estimation value is obtained. Rough estimate value of phase noise is obtained with time domain extended Kalman filtering (EKF). The estimation value of phase noise in time domain is plural, and in order to obtain better compensation results, every OFDM symbol is divided into several sub-symbols according to the number of pilot sequences. Time domain EKF is carried out at the positions of pilot sequences. Rough estimation value of phase noise of every sampling point is obtained with linear interpolation at the last pilot of every sub-symbol. Predecision of frequency domain data after rough phase noise compensation and time domain phase noise fine compensation are carried out. Numerical simulation is performed by the proposed algorithm for CO-OFDM system with transmission rate of 50 Gbit· s_1 and transmission distance of 100 km. Results show that the compensation results achieved by the proposed method are better than that of other methods. When CO-OFDM system is with 16QAM and a laser linewidth of 1 MHz or with 32QAM and a laser linewidth of 800 kHz, bit error rate can reach the upper limit of forward error correction.

Abstract:Two types of wireless system imperfections, namely, frequency offset and in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance, are addressed in this paper. The I/Q imbalance in radio frequency (RF) direct-conversion not only introduces an unwanted in-band image interference but also degrades the accuracy of carrier estimation. Toward this end, we propose a pilot-based scheme for both frequency offset and I/Q imbalance compensation at the baseband. A low-cost nonlinear least squares (NLS) frequency estimator robust to the I/Q imbalance is developed. Also derived is an I/Q imbalance compensation structure that consists of two stages: a finite impulse response (FIR) filter that compensates the frequency dependent imbalance; and an asymmetric phase compensator that corrects the frequency independent error. The compensation coefficients are optimized by exploiting the phase rotation embedded in the pilot symbols. Both computer simulations and experiment results verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in various I/Q imbalance scenarios.

Abstract:An adaptive and joint carrier recovery scheme is proposed based on adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) for 16 quadrature amplitude modulation signals. The tuning parameter Q is adaptively adjusted according to the innovation vector under dynamic operating condition. Consequently, the proposed scheme can simultaneously estimate frequency offset (FO) and phase noise with excellent performance in estimation accuracy, estimation range and tracking capability as well as linewidth tolerance, especially in dynamic frequency offset scenarios. The proposed scheme is also demonstrated in 14GS/s dual-polarization 16 quadrature amplitude modulation experimental systems. Compared with conventional extended Kalman filter (EKF) and QPSK partitioning, the proposed scheme offers better estimation accuracy and adaptive configuration capability of the tuning parameter.

Abstract:In the wideband wireless systems, the frequency-dependent I/Q imbalance is a severe impairment which decreases the communication quality. We propose a blind calibration scheme for compensating the I/Q imbalance in transmitters. The parameter estimation makes use of the second-order statistics of the signals. And a closed-form solution is obtained. The compensation structure consists of two parts, corresponding to the frequency-dependent imbalance and the frequency-independent imbalance respectively. The simulation results demonstrate the excellent performance of the method. The average IRR of compensated signal can achieve 54dB, which improves about 30dB compared with uncompensated signal. Besides, the robustness of the proposed method is proved by the simulation as well.

Abstract:I/Q impairments of the I/Q modulator can adversely affect the performance of wireless transmitters. This problem is much more pronounced in concurrent dual-band transmitters with two modulators involved. In this paper, we propose a hybrid two-box model, called HTB model, to jointly compensate I/Q imbalance of modulators and concurrent dual-band PA distortion. The pro-posed model is based on the characteristics of I/Q imbalance in the concurrent dual-band transmitters. It has much lower com-plexity and comparative linearization performance compared to conventional models. The experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.
