Abstract:The large scale fiber grating array sensing system has found lots of applications in fields distributed in underwater, land, sky and space, which is often configured using TDM/WDM multiplexing schemes. In recent years, the integrated fabrication method without any fiber splicing points plays important roles in providing the largest system high reliability and robust detection performance. However, in such fiber grating array, the synthesis of fiber grating array without bringing any damage becomes a difficult problem. The existing reconstruction algorithms are only used for single fiber bragg grating. This paper will start with the fiber grating array which is formed by two low reflectivity FBGs and regarded as a special chirp fiber grating, then a proposal of synthesis the fiber grating array in time domain ispresented, which can also suppressthe multi-reflections induced signal crosstalk. The research results will provide a solution tothe synthesis of the integrated fiber grating array and a new signal processing method to suppress the array signal crosstalk.

Abstract:A novel wavelength detection and demodulation technique of fiber Bragg gratings sensors is put forward. The principle, experimental setup and results of the sensor are analyzed. The new technique converts detections of shift of center reflecting wavelength into detection of light intensity extremum. Furthermore, a spatial division multiplexing system of Bragg gratings sensors based on the novel technique is developed. The multiplexing numbers are not confined by bandwidth of light source and tunable scope of single fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:A method of writing fiber Bragg grating into the birefringent fiber is presented. The beat length of the birefringent fiber is easily obtained. It is found that there are actually two gratings respectively written on the axis of the birefringent fiber. These two gratings act selectivity on the polarization states and these two polarization states are vertical to each other. A better polarization splitting device can be made by using this character.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg gratings in multicore fibers can be used as compact and robust filters in astronomical and other research and commercial applications. Strong suppression at a single wavelength requires that all cores have matching transmission profiles. These gratings cannot be inscribed using the same method as for single-core fibers because the curved surface of the cladding acts as a lens, focusing the incoming UV laser beam and causing variations in exposure between cores. Therefore we use an additional optical element to ensure that the beam shape does not change while passing through the cross-section of the multicore fiber. This consists of a glass capillary tube which has been polished flat on one side, which is then placed over the section of the fiber to be inscribed. The laser beam enters the fiber through the flat surface of the capillary tube and hence maintains its original dimensions. This paper demonstrates the improvements in core-to-core uniformity for a 7-core fiber using this method. The technique can be generalized to larger multicore fibers.

Abstract:In this paper we mainly discuss the low-cost way to improve the performances of wavelength routed optical networks. It is really a tough work to reduce the probability of traffic loss due to the lack of abundant lightpath between arbitrary nodes connected by precious wavelengths. Aiming to solve the problem, we probe an economical proposal that local optical nodes can be equipped with extra receiving components with cheap Chirp Bragg Gratings. Under the experimental platform of single-direction double-fibers optical network rings, this scheme has been verified, showing the result that the traffic loss ratio can be reduced significantly by adding more Chirp Bragg Gratings especially under heavy service loads. Consequently, it is feasible to improve the performance of all optical networks with several groups of Chirp Bragg grating fibers with whole consideration of cost-effective optical network design.

Abstract:Two fiber Bragg grating based techniques are proposed to reduce the fiber dispersion effect on the RF power penalty in ROF system. One is to realize the vestige sideband modulation by the narrow-band fiber Bragg grating, and the other is to use the chirped fiber grating to compensate the fiber dispersion. The transmission performance of the ROF system under both these techniques and the traditional double sideband modulation are experimentally measured and compared. The results show that the dispersion effect is effectively reduced by these two techniques and hence the transmission performances are greatly improved.

Abstract:Large-scale, densely distributed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) arrays have a wide range of applications in industrial safety surveillance. Due to the limitation of inscription pulse-width, most grating interrogators have difficulties distinguishing each grating when the spacing between adjacent gratings reduces to specific small values. Multiple gratings within a fiber section are generally deemed as a single sensing element, and their superposed reflection spectra are acquired for necessary sensing information. The challenge is that serious crosstalk exists in multiple gratings caused by the accumulation of sidelobes from numerous reflections. Such crosstalk, indeed, can be eliminated when the sidelobe suppression ratio (SLSR) is kept high, which has been a long-term difficulty in such systems. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel and simple online fabrication technique for writing apodized fiber Bragg grating (AFBG) arrays during fiber drawing by simply rotating a focusing cylindrical lens for modified pulse intensities. At four degrees rotation angle, the fabricated AFBG has good performance and consistency with full width at half maximum (FWFH) of 0.088 nm, and the SLSR on the longwavelength side is maintained as high as 20.8 dB. Experimental results further prove that using this fiber-based system, a hot spot of 10 cm size can be well perceptive over one-km fiber length, and the minimum measurable temperature change is 6 celcius. This work clearly addresses a reliable and potential method for the online fabrication of AFBG arrays with suppressed sidelobe-induced crosstalk.

Abstract:When the fiber Bragg grating is glued in the non-uniform underlay,the bandwidth of the reflection spectrum will change complexly.In this paper,we analyze the principle of linearly broadening of the bandwidth when the fiber Bragg grating is embedded in the linear strain field.And we develop a device with controllably tuning bandwidth of fiber Bragg grating using the opening loop proposed by ourselves,the related mechanical setup,driving circuit and software.The controllable device is of high precision with the maximum error ±0.04 nm and the maximum tuning bandwidth of the apparatus is up to 6 nm.The device also is characterized by precision repetition and easy operation so that it can be used in the optical communication and optical sensing.

Abstract:A novel grating inverse design method is proposed in this paper, which is direct in physical meaning and easy to accomplish. The key point of the method is design and implement desired spectra response in grating strength modulation domain, while not in grating period chirp domain. Simulated results are in good coincidence with design target. By transforming grating period chirp to grating strength modulation, a novel grating with opposite dispersion characters is proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, a new implementation of the double exposure method for fabricating apodized fiber Bragg gratings by controlling the parameters of rotation stage and the number of UV-shots is presented. As a result, the average refractive index is kept nearly constant along the Bragg grating, and various apodized fiber Bragg grating with high reflectivity and high side lobe suppression ratio have been fabricated in single-mode hydrogen-loaded photosensitive fiber . The achieved side-lobe suppression ratio is larger than 25dB.

Abstract:A novel and simple chirp tuning device of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed, which possesses a C shape and consists of a straight beam and two half-round arches. A linear strain field is induced over the straight beam by applying stress on the arches. As a result, the uniform FBG bonded on the surface of the beam is converted to a linearly chirped fiber grating. The bandwidth of the FBG is tuned linearly by applied stress with the sensitivity up to 0.34 nm/N and a linearity of 0.9982. In the experiment, a chirp bandwidth of about 7 nm can be obtained with the stress of 20 N. Additionally, the reflective spectra are quite flat. The experimental results are in good agreement with the analyses. Due to the characteristic of the bandwidth immunity to environmental temperature variation and large tunable range of bandwidth, the device can be applied in fields such as measurement of stress (strain, curvature, etc.), fiber laser, chromatic dispersion compensation.

Abstract:A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) was written in a novel "quasi-rectangle" high birefringence fiber by the phase-mask method. Two Bragg wavelengths corresponding to the fast-axis mode and slow-axis mode are observed in this grating, and a wavelength splitting as large as 0.765 nm was obtained. The wavelength splitting changes proportionally to the temperature, but remains the same as the strain increases. This novel FBG can be used to measure temperature and strain simultaneously.

Abstract:We bring forward a novel FBG sensor multiplexing technique based on the combination of wavelength- and spatial-division multiplexing technique. Furthermore, the data acquisition parameter of the multiplexing sensing FBG system is defined. With this technique, the FBG sensors system not only avoid frequently switching and improve the average response speed, but also are able to enact data acquisition rule according to the data acquisition factor that is composed with priority (PRI), the delay time and the wavelength shift of FBG sensors. Therefore, the smart FBG sensors multiplexing system is more rational and smarter than the conventional counterpart. The simulate result and the experiment work demonstrated that the average delay time of smart system is less than conventional ones and immune to the scale size.

Abstract:Due to the limitation of the lens effect of the optical fibre and the inhomogeneity of the laser fluence on different cores, it is still challenging to controllably inscribe different fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) in multicore fibres. In this article, we reported the FBG inscription in four core fibres (FCFs), whose cores are arranged in the corners of a square lattice. By investigating the influence of different inscription conditions during inscription, different results, such as simultaneous inscription of all cores, selectively inscription of individual or two cores, and even double scanning in perpendicular core couples by diagonal, are achieved. The phase mask scanning method, consisting of a 244nm Argon-ion frequency-doubled laser, air-bearing linear transfer stage and cylindrical lens and mirror setup, is used to precisely control the grating inscription in FCFs. The influence of three factors is systematically investigated to overcome the limitations, and they are the defocusing length between the cylindrical lens and the bare fibre, the rotation geometry of the fibre to the irritation beam, and the relative position of the fibre in the vertical direction of the laser beam.

Abstract:The twisting vector measurement is realized using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed in a polarization maintaining fiber with a rotated splicing joint. The rotated splicing joint introduces an asymmetric structure in the polarization maintaining FBG (PMFBG) which leads to a unique spectral response for the clockwise and anticlockwise twist of the PMFBG. The opposite intensity change of the intersection region between the two principal Bragg reflections for the clockwise and anticlockwise twist is used to discriminate the twisting direction. The proposed PMFBGs have potential applications in multi-parameter sensing, e.g., temperature, strain, and twist.

In this paper, the main writing methods of MCF FBGs and their sensing applications are reviewed. The future development of the MCF FBG is also prospected.

Abstract:A novel approach is proposed towards the design of fiber Bragg gratings with multi-channel right-angled triangular spectrum. Firstly, a single-channel grating is synthesized utilizing an adaptive quantum particle swarm optimization with the piecewise constant mutated factor. Meanwhile, the reflectivity spectrum with good linear edge for a short grating is obtained. Then, for its merits of easy fabrication, the superposition method is adopted to design multi-channel gratings with initial spectral distortion. Finally, this distortion is optimized by the method in the first step. It is shown that the design outcomes still retain the features of easy fabrication and short length. Such gratings would be useful as wavelength-interrogation devices with multiple physical parameters in optical sensor systems.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates a highly effective method for fibre Bragg grating (FBG) inscription into a seven core fibre (7CF) and its application as an effective vector bending sensor. The development of multicore fibres (MCFs) and enabling the fabrication of FBGs into them result in a solution for multi-parameter measurements such as temperature/strain/bending/twist. The FBG in the central core of 7CF is on the neutral axis and therefore it is sensitive only to thermal and insensitive to deformational change, whereas the FBGs in the none-central cores that are evenly distributed over the 7CF cross-section can facilitate the measurement of structure deformation, such as bending, loading and twist. Furthermore, the FBGs in different cores respond to the physical perturbations differently in various orientations, offering vector sensing to measure both amplitude and direction of the structure change. The 7CF-FBG sensors are highly applicable for mechanical structures and flexible medical instruments.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a femtosecond laser plane-by-plane (Pl-b-Pl) technology for inscription of high-quality fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The spherical aberration (SA) was introduced to elongate the focal volume, and then combined with the scanning process, an expanded rectangular refractive index modification (RIM) region can be achieved. Such RIM regions exhibit a length of 15 µm and a width of 14 µm. Note that it consists of a negative region and a positive region. We have systematically studied the influence of the overlap between the RIM region and fiber core on the spectrum of FBG. After optimizing, the core of a conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) is covered completely by using the positive RIM region, resulting in a significant enhancement of the coupling strength coefficient (i.e., 3177.6 m-1). A 500 µm long FBG assembled by using these RIM regions can achieve a high reflectivity of 95.83%. Moreover, the cladding mode resonances in transmission spectrum are suppressed thoroughly, since the localized effect in RIM region was avoided. In addition, this FBG exhibits a high birefringence of 2.13 × 10-4. Therefore, the proposed fabrication method can be used to inscribe high-quality FBGs that could be used in many fields such as communication, fiber laser, polarization-selective filtering and multi-parameter sensing.
