Abstract:This study explores the potential of long-wave infrared free-space optical (FSO) transmission that leverages multilevel signals to attain high spectral efficiency. The FSO transmission system consists of a directly modulated-quantum cascade laser (DM-QCL) operating at 9.15 μm and a mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector. To fully understand the system, we conduct measurements on the DM-QCL chip and MCT detector and assess the overall amplitude response of the DM-QCL, MCT detector, and all electrical components. We apply various signals, including on-off keying (OOK), 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), 6-level PAM (PAM6), and 8-level PAM (PAM8) to maximize the bit rate and spectral efficiency of the FSO transmission. Through a two-dimensional sweeping of the laser bias current and MCT detector photovoltage, we optimize the transmission performance. At the optimal operation point, the FSO system achieved impressive results which are up to 6 Gbaud OOK, 3.5 Gbaud PAM4, 3 Gbaud PAM6, and 2.7 Gbaud PAM8 signal transmissions, with a bit error rate performance below 6.25% overhead hard decision-forward error correction limit when the DM-QCL operates at 10 °C. We also evaluate the eye diagrams and stability of the system to showcase its remarkable transmission performance. Our findings suggest that the DM-QCL and MCT detector-based FSO transceivers offer a highly competitive solution for the next generation of optical wireless communication systems.

Abstract:The terahertz band has been recognized as a promising candidate to support future rate-greedy applications such as 6G communications. Optoelectronic terahertz communications are beneficial for the realization of high-speed transmission. In this Letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optoelectronic terahertz transmission system with intensity modulation and direct detection, where a discrete multitone (DMT) waveform with high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is used. A zero-bias diode (ZBD) is used in the system as a simple, cost-effective direct detection terahertz receiver. A nonlinearity-aware digital signal reception routine is proposed to mitigate the nonlinear impairments induced by subcarrier-to-subcarrier beating interference from the ZBD. In this experiment, up to a 60 Gbit/s line rate 16QAM-DMT signal is successfully transmitted over a 3 m wireless link in the 310 GHz band, and the mean signal-to-noise ratio is improved by 3 dB with nonlinearity-aware signal processing routine. The advantageous features of such a scheme make it a promising solution for terahertz wireless communications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an O-band single-lane 200 Gb/s intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system using a low-chirp, broadband, and high-power directly modulated laser (DML). The employed laser is an isolator-free packaged module with over 65-GHz modulation bandwidth enabled by a distributed feedback plus passive waveguide reflection (DFB+R) design. We transmit high baud rate signals over 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without using any optical amplifiers and demodulate them with reasonably low-complexity digital equalizers. We generate and detect up to 170 Gbaud non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK), 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and 100 Gbaud PAM6 in the optical back-to-back configuration. After transmission over the 20-km optical-amplifier-free SSMF link, up to 150 Gbaud NRZ-OOK, 106 Gbaud PAM4, and 80 Gbaud PAM6 signals are successfully received and demodulated, achieving bit error rate (BER) performance below the 6.25%-overhead hard-decision (HD) forward-error-correction code (FEC) limit. The demonstrated results show the possibility of meeting the strict requirements towards the development of 200 Gb/s/lane IM/DD technologies, targeting 800 Gb/s and 1.6 Tb/s LR applications.

Abstract:The recently reported high spectral efficiency (SE) and high-baud-rate signal transmission are all based on digital coherent optical communications and digital signal processing (DSP). DSP simplifies the reception of advanced modulation formats and also enables the major electrical and optical impairments to be processed and compensated in the digital domain, at the transmitter or receiver side. In this paper, we summarize the research progress on high-speed signal generation and detection and also show the progress on DSP for high-speed signal detection. We also report the latest progress on multi-core and multi-mode multiplexing.

Abstract:Direct detection shows great attraction in short-and medium-reach transmission for its low cost and easy integration. Especially, single-sideband (SSB) Nyquist subcarrier modulation is a promising technology due to its high spectral efficiency and strong tolerance to chromatic dispersion. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 800 Gb/s (8x100 Gb/s) direct-detection wave-length division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over 320 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with Nyquist 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) and half-cycle SSB subcarrier modulation. Each channel carries 25 Gbd 16-QAM SSB signal and the channel spacing is 35 GHz. The nonlinear performance is discussed for both single channel and WDM systems. The bit error rate of the WDM system transmitting over 320 km SSMF is 6.73x10(-3). Considering 20% hard-decision forward error correction and frame redundancy, a net bit rate of 650.4Gb/s is achieved with a spectral efficiency of 2.32 b/s/Hz. With this spectral efficient modulation technique, our study achieves C-band high-capacity direct-detection WDM systems with metro distance transmission as long as 320 km SSMF.

Abstract:The performance of direct-detection transceivers employing electronic dispersion compensation combined with DSP-based receiver linearization techniques is assessed through experiments on a 4 112 Gbs wavelength-division multiplexing direct-detection single-sideband 16 quadratic-amplitude modulation Nyquist-subcarrier-modulation system operating at a net optical information spectral density of 2.8 bsHz in transmission over standard single mode fiber links of up to 240 km. The experimental results indicate that systems with receiver-based dispersion compensation can achieve similar performance to those utilizing transmitter-based dispersion compensation, provided it is implemented together with an effective digital receiver linearization technique. The use of receiver-based compensation would simplify the operation of a fiber link since knowledge of the link dispersion is not required at the transmitter. The recently proposed KramersKronig receiver scheme was found to be the best performing among the receiver linearization techniques assessed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of the KramersKronig scheme.

Abstract:A simple and low-cost technique is developed to enhance the transmission performance in fiber wireless links. Using a narrowband-fiber Bragg grating (FBG), single-sideband modulation is realized by filtering out one sideband, which at the same time increases the modulation depth by suppressing the optical-carrier power. The results demonstrate a 12-dB improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) when a 10.5-GHz RF signal carrying 5 Mb/s QPSK format data is transmitted over 35-km single-mode fiber. Abstract:We demonstrate 224 Gb/s single polarization direct detection transmission over 160 km standard single mode fiber with Nyquist 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation halfcycle single-sideband (SSB) signal at C-band. The net bit rate is 203.4 Gb/s considering frame redundancy and hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) with 7% overhead. After 160 km transmission, the bit error rate (BER) is 3.6 x 10(-3), which is less than the BER threshold of 4.5 x 10(-3) for 7% HD-FEC. To our best knowledge, it is the first report of C-band 200G single channel and single photodiode direct detection transmission, which sets a record of fiber link length for such systems. In our experiment, the optical carrier is added with an additional laser at the transmitter side, which is delivered along with the signal. For short reach transmission, the nonlinear interactions between the carrier and the signal are usually insignificant. Therefore, our scheme is equivalent to heterodyne coherent detection with a local oscillator and a single-ended photodiode. The system performance is studied by deducing the relationship between electrical signal-to-noise ratio and optical signal-to-noise ratio of an SSB signal. The spectrum efficiency and hardware complexity of our experiment are compared with other direct detection schemes. The signal-signal beat interference induced by the square-law detection of a single-ended photodiode is compensated by an iterative technique at the receiver side. The equalization-enhanced in-band noise in bandwidth-limited systems is compensated using a digital post filter together with maximum likelihood sequence decision. The demonstrated scheme can provide a promising technique for beyond 100G high-speed direct detection transmission aiming to datacenter interconnecting and some metropolitan area applications.

Abstract:Single-polarization, single-photodiode-based direct-detection (DD) transceivers offer advantages for metro networks due to their simple and low-cost optical hardware structure. Single-sideband Nyquist-pulse-shaped subcarrier modulation (SSB Nyquist-SCM) is a promising signal format to achieve high information spectral density (ISD) in such DD systems. In this paper, we present theoretical and experimental evaluations of a variety of direct-detection SSB Nyquist-SCM system designs, operating at 100 Gb/s per wavelength in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) metro network scenarios. Through simulations, several receiver-based digital linearization techniques to overcome the effect of signal-signal beat interference were investigated, and their performance compared with alternative approaches, including optical beat-interference cancellation receivers (BICRx) and coherent receivers (both heterodyne and homodyne). Subsequently, experimental assessments of the digitally-linearized DD receivers were carried out. Spectrally efficient (net ISD exceeding 3 b/s/Hz) 4 × 112 Gb/s WDM DD single-sideband 16-QAM Nyquist-SCM transmission over distances of up to 240 km (multi-span links) and 160 km (single-span links without mid-span amplification) were shown to be possible using uncompensated standard single-mode fiber.

Abstract:Spectrum efficient data transmission is of key interest for high capacity optical communication systems considering the limited available bandwidth. Transmission of the high speed signal with higher-order modulation formats within the Nyquist bandwidth using coherent detection brings attractive performance advantages. However, high speed Nyquist signal generation with high order modulation formats is challenging. Electrical Nyquist pulse generation is restricted by the limited sampling rate and processor capacities of digital-to-analog convertor devices, while the optical Nyquist signals can provide a much higher symbol rate using time domain multiplexing method. However, most optical Nyquist signals are based on direct detection with simple modulation formats. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of high speed all optical Nyquist signal generation based on Sinc -shaped pulse generation and time-division multiplexing with high level modulation format and full-band coherent detection. Our experiments demonstrate a highly flexible and compatible all optical high speed Nyquist signal generation and detection scheme for future fiber communication systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate 6.4 Tb/s wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) direct-detection transmission based on Nyquist twin-SSB modulation over 25 km SSMF with bit error rates (BERs) below the 20% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 1.5 × 10−2. The two sidebands of each channel are separately detected using Kramers–Kronig receiver without MIMO equalization. We also carry out numerical simulations to evaluate the system robustness against I/Q amplitude imbalance, I/Q phase deviation and the extinction ratio of modulator, respectively. Furthermore, we show in simulation that the requirement of steep edge optical filter can be relaxed if multi-input–multi-output (MIMO) equalization between the two sidebands is used.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel approach to simultaneously receive multi-band 100-Gb/s direct-detection optical signal with only one polarization and one conventional 40-GHz photodiode. The modulation format of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) is selected to provide signal spectrum with high side-lobe suppression ratio, which can effectively reduce the electrical sub-band frequency interference. The whole 100-Gb/s OFDM/OQAM signal is comprised of 6 sub-bands with 16- and 32-QAM formats loading. Only one guard band is required to accommodate the overlapped 6-band signal-to-signal beat interference (SSBI). The receiver bandwidth is mainly limited by the digital storage oscilloscope (DSO) of 33 GHz. The transmission distance over standard single mode fiber (SSMF) is up to 320 km.
