Abstract:The generation of photonic ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse signals using an uncooled distributed-feedback laser is proposed. For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate bit-for-bit digital signal processing (DSP) bit-error-rate measurements for transmission of a 781.25-Mb/s photonic UWB signal over fiber links. The DSP algorithm is described, the generated UWB signal is shown to comply with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission requirements, and transmission of 1.71times105 UWB bits over fiber is demonstrated without error.

Abstract:Single-polarization, single-photodiode-based direct-detection (DD) transceivers offer advantages for metro networks due to their simple and low-cost optical hardware structure. Single-sideband Nyquist-pulse-shaped subcarrier modulation (SSB Nyquist-SCM) is a promising signal format to achieve high information spectral density (ISD) in such DD systems. In this paper, we present theoretical and experimental evaluations of a variety of direct-detection SSB Nyquist-SCM system designs, operating at 100 Gb/s per wavelength in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) metro network scenarios. Through simulations, several receiver-based digital linearization techniques to overcome the effect of signal-signal beat interference were investigated, and their performance compared with alternative approaches, including optical beat-interference cancellation receivers (BICRx) and coherent receivers (both heterodyne and homodyne). Subsequently, experimental assessments of the digitally-linearized DD receivers were carried out. Spectrally efficient (net ISD exceeding 3 b/s/Hz) 4 × 112 Gb/s WDM DD single-sideband 16-QAM Nyquist-SCM transmission over distances of up to 240 km (multi-span links) and 160 km (single-span links without mid-span amplification) were shown to be possible using uncompensated standard single-mode fiber.

Abstract:The performance of direct-detection transceivers employing electronic dispersion compensation combined with DSP-based receiver linearization techniques is assessed through experiments on a 4 112 Gbs wavelength-division multiplexing direct-detection single-sideband 16 quadratic-amplitude modulation Nyquist-subcarrier-modulation system operating at a net optical information spectral density of 2.8 bsHz in transmission over standard single mode fiber links of up to 240 km. The experimental results indicate that systems with receiver-based dispersion compensation can achieve similar performance to those utilizing transmitter-based dispersion compensation, provided it is implemented together with an effective digital receiver linearization technique. The use of receiver-based compensation would simplify the operation of a fiber link since knowledge of the link dispersion is not required at the transmitter. The recently proposed KramersKronig receiver scheme was found to be the best performing among the receiver linearization techniques assessed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of the KramersKronig scheme.

Abstract:Direct detection shows great attraction in short-and medium-reach transmission for its low cost and easy integration. Especially, single-sideband (SSB) Nyquist subcarrier modulation is a promising technology due to its high spectral efficiency and strong tolerance to chromatic dispersion. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 800 Gb/s (8x100 Gb/s) direct-detection wave-length division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over 320 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with Nyquist 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) and half-cycle SSB subcarrier modulation. Each channel carries 25 Gbd 16-QAM SSB signal and the channel spacing is 35 GHz. The nonlinear performance is discussed for both single channel and WDM systems. The bit error rate of the WDM system transmitting over 320 km SSMF is 6.73x10(-3). Considering 20% hard-decision forward error correction and frame redundancy, a net bit rate of 650.4Gb/s is achieved with a spectral efficiency of 2.32 b/s/Hz. With this spectral efficient modulation technique, our study achieves C-band high-capacity direct-detection WDM systems with metro distance transmission as long as 320 km SSMF.

Abstract:We propose a Hilbert superposition and modified signal-to-signal beating interference (SSBI) cancellation scheme in an optical single side-band (SSB) modulation and direct-detection system. The optical SSB signal is generated by a relatively low-cost dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). The two driving signals are a pair of Hilbert signals with Nyquist pulse-shaped four-level pulse amplitude modulation (NPAM-4). In addition to the transmitted baseband signal, both its Hilbert transform and the SSBI can also be detected by direct-detection, which introduce the interference to the transmitted signal. We use the first-stage Hilbert superposition cancellation (HSC) to cancel the unwanted Hilbert transform signal and a modified single-stage linearization filter which contains the second-stage HSC to deduct the SSBI in the receiver. We experimentally demonstrate that 40 Gb/s optical SSB NPAM-4 signal transmission over 80 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF).

Abstract:Direct detection (DD) is one of the most attractive solutions for short and medium reach optical fiber transmission in comprehensive consideration of digital signal processing (DSP), power consumption, and cost. Various single side band (SSB) DD techniques have been widely investigated to detect and process the complex signal. In this paper, we propose a novel approach which uses only high-speed digital input/outputs (IO) to generate both quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal and virtual carrier signal. A transmission of 4 × 32 Gb/s QPSK signal over 1200-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) in block-wise manner has been successfully demonstrated. Only a single polarization in-phase-and-quadrature (IQ) modulator and one single photodiode (PD) are used for each channel. Compared with conventional DSP of coherent detection, the DSP in the proposed scheme is also simplified that only fixed frequency compensation is required without additional phase noise elimination. The overall system complexity has been greatly reduced.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) for high spectrum efficiency transmission system are investigated in both long-haul and short haul optical networks. For long-haul transmission, two different super-Nyquist WDM systems based on advanced post (receiver side) and pre (transmitter side) DSP are demonstrated and studied. A novel DSP scheme for this optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) without post filter are proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which directly recovers the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. This improved filtering tolerance and transmission performance are demonstrated in an 8-channel 112-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) experiment with a 25GHz-grid over 2640-km single-mode fiber (SMF). Alternatively, a novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce the channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering and using. Only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM multiplexing. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit 10 channel 32-GBaud (128-Gb/s) PDM-9-QAM signals within 25-GHz grid over 2975-km at a net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz (after excluding the 20% soft-decision FEC overhead). We extend the DSP for short haul optical transmission networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high speed CAP-64QAM system using direct modulation laser (DML) based on direct detection and digital equalizations. Decision-directed least mean squares (DD-LMS) are used to equalize the CAP-64QAM. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit up to a record 60-Gb/s CAP-64QAM over 20-km stand single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on the DML and direct detection.

Abstract:112 Gbps per wavelength, amplification free Four level Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM-4) transmissions are experimentally demonstrated with advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. Two DSP architectures are investigated for Directly Modulated Lasers (DMLs): 1) the regular DSP with Feed Forward Equalization (FFE) and Decision Feedback Equalization (DFE), and 2) the enhanced DSP with Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) equalizer. The experimental results show that with advanced DSP technologies the conventional DML can achieve 40 km transmissions with Bit Error Rate (BER) under 2.4 x 10(-4) that meets RS (544, 514) Forward Error Correction (FEC) requirement; with regular-DSP the advanced DML can achieve 40 km transmissions with BER under 3.8 x 10(-3), with stronger FEC. 112 Gbps and beyond per lambda DML based transmission is a promising low power, low-cost solution for 800 GbE or 1.6 TbE Ethernet.

Abstract:We demonstrate 224 Gb/s single polarization direct detection transmission over 160 km standard single mode fiber with Nyquist 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation halfcycle single-sideband (SSB) signal at C-band. The net bit rate is 203.4 Gb/s considering frame redundancy and hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) with 7% overhead. After 160 km transmission, the bit error rate (BER) is 3.6 x 10(-3), which is less than the BER threshold of 4.5 x 10(-3) for 7% HD-FEC. To our best knowledge, it is the first report of C-band 200G single channel and single photodiode direct detection transmission, which sets a record of fiber link length for such systems. In our experiment, the optical carrier is added with an additional laser at the transmitter side, which is delivered along with the signal. For short reach transmission, the nonlinear interactions between the carrier and the signal are usually insignificant. Therefore, our scheme is equivalent to heterodyne coherent detection with a local oscillator and a single-ended photodiode. The system performance is studied by deducing the relationship between electrical signal-to-noise ratio and optical signal-to-noise ratio of an SSB signal. The spectrum efficiency and hardware complexity of our experiment are compared with other direct detection schemes. The signal-signal beat interference induced by the square-law detection of a single-ended photodiode is compensated by an iterative technique at the receiver side. The equalization-enhanced in-band noise in bandwidth-limited systems is compensated using a digital post filter together with maximum likelihood sequence decision. The demonstrated scheme can provide a promising technique for beyond 100G high-speed direct detection transmission aiming to datacenter interconnecting and some metropolitan area applications.

Abstract:Due to their simple and cost-effective transceiver architecture, single-polarization and single-photodiode-based direct-detection (DD) systems offer advantages for metropolitan area network and data-center interconnect applications. Single-sideband subcarrier modulation (SSB SCM) signaling with DD has the potential to achieve high information spectral density (ISD) but its performance can be significantly degraded by signal–signal beat interference (SSBI). The recently proposed Kramers–Kronig (KK) digital signal processing scheme is effective in eliminating the SSBI penalty. Through the use of the KK scheme, we achieved 4 × 168 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing DD SSB 64-QAM Nyquist-SCM signal transmission over 80 km of uncompensated standard single-mode fiber at a net ISD of up to 4.61 (b/s)/Hz. The joint optimization of the optical carrier-to-signal power ratio and the KK algorithm sampling rate is described.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of bandwidth, a higher capacity communication system is required for short-reach optical link. Intensity modulation/direct detection (IM-DD) is considered as a reasonable method, due to its low cost and power consumption. In the aspect of digital signal processing (DSP), discrete Fourier transform-spread (DFT-s) precoding can be used to reduce peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and average the noise among the subcarriers. In addition, probabilistic shaping (PS) turns out to further increase the system capacity. We experimentally demonstrated a 200 Gbit/s single λ dual band DMT transmission with a spectrum efficiency (SE) of 6.29 bit/s/Hz. The achievable information rate (AIR) of the proposed dual band signal increases about 30 Gbit/s compared with that of single band signal. Moreover, single-sideband (SSB) signal and signal with guard band are implemented to mitigate the frequency selective fading of optical fiber chromatic dispersion (CD). The performance of these two methods are quite closed for short reach transmission. Considering the signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) introduced by the SSB signal, an extra Volterra filter is applied in DSP. Besides, an extra optical filter is required to generate the SSB signal.

Abstract:We demonstrate the single channel direct detection transmission of 112 Gb/s Nyquist 16-QAM half-cycle single sideband (SSB) subcarrier modulation (SCM) signal over 960 km standard single mode fiber with erbium-doped fiber amplifieronly amplification at C-band. Fiber Kerr nonlinearity in SSB-SCM systems is investigated for long distance transmission. The nonlinear distortion is suppressed by the pre-distorted digital back-propagation (DBP) method applied at the transmitter side. With DBP, a 1.02 dB Q(2) factor improvement is achieved compared with chromatic dispersion compensation only pre-distortion.
