Fabricated by physical drawing of glass or polymer materials, these tiny fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, significant surface field enhancement, and large and abnormal waveguide dispersion, which bestow them with a variety of applications in fields ranging from optical communication, laser technology, sensors, nonlinear optics, and quantum op-tics.

Abstract:Few-mode-fiber (FMF) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technique to further increase the transmission capacity of single mode fibers. We propose and numerically investigate a fiber-optical mode converter (MC) using long period gratings (LPGs) fabricated on the FMF by point-by-point CO2 laser inscription technique. In order to precisely excite three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP02), both untilted LPG and tilted LPG are comprehensively optimized through the length, index modulation depth, and tilt angle of the LPG in order to achieve a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20dB with less wavelength dependence. It is found that the proposed MCs have obvious advantages of high MCR, low mode crosstalk, easy fabrication and maintenance, and compact size.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) transmission based on few-mode fibers (FMFs) appears to be an alternative solution for overcoming the capacity limit of single-mode fibers (SMFs). A FMF coupler-based mode division multiplexer/demultiplexer (MMUX/DeMMUX) is proposed and theoretically investigated after the fabricated FMF is characterized. MMUXs/DeMMUXs with a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20 dB can be obtained for two-mode multiplexing and three-mode multiplexing over a wavelength span of 60 and 10 nm, respectively. We numerically verify the proposed MMUX/DeMMUX which has the advantages of high MCR, easy fabrication and maintenance, and low wavelength dependence.

Abstract:By means of high-temperature physical drawing, glasses can be directly drawn into subwavelength-or nanometer-diameter fibers. As-fabricated nanofibers show excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness for low-loss optical wave guiding, and may exhibit a series of interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, evanescent guidance and high waveguide dispersion. These fibers provide promising building blocks for photonic applications in optical communications, optical sensing and nonlinear optics.

Abstract: Optical fiber based components and devices have been very successful in the past 30 years and will surely continue to thrive in a variety of applications including optical communications, optical sensing, power delivery and nonlinear optics[1-3]. With increasing requirements for higher performance, wider applicability and lower energy consumption, there is a strong demand for the miniaturization of fiber-optic components or devices. When operated on a smaller spatial scale, a photonic circuit can circulate, process and respond to optical signals on a smaller time scale. Only at wavelength or subwavelength size does the photonic structure manifest evident near-field features that can be utilized for interlinking and processing optical signals highly efficiently. For example, it was estimated that to reach an optical data transmission rate as high as 10 Tb/s, the size of photonic matrix switching devices should be reduced to 100-nm scale[4]. At the same time, to perform a given function that relies on a certain kind of light-matter interaction, usually less energy is required when smaller quantities of matter are involved. Optical MNFs featured at subwavelength scale, provide a number of interesting properties such as tight confinement, high fractional evanescent fields, large and manageable waveguide dispersion that are highly desirable for functionalizing fiber-optic circuits with great versatility on a micro/nanoscale[5-7]. At the same time, taper-drawn MNFs provide excellent compatibility with standard optical fiber systems.

Abstract:Abstract (100 Word Limit): When its size goes down to the wavelength of the guided light, an optical nanofibre/nanowire exhibits interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, abnormal dispersion, enhanced surface effects and excellent mechanical flexibilities, which opens opportunities for combining waveguide optics with near-field optics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, quantum optics and optomechanics on the nanoscale and low power level, and intrigues a variety of novel nanophotonic components/devices. This talk reviews the principles and technological applications of optical nanofibres and nanowires. Future applications of these one-dimensional building blocks for optical communications and sensing are also discussed. Presenter Bio (100 Word Limit): Limin Tong received his BS and MSc degrees in Physics and PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1991, 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1997 he joined the Department of Physics, Zhejiang University, China as an assistant professor. In 2001 he joined Mazur group, Harvard University as a visiting scientist, and returned Zhejiang University in 2004. He is currently a professor and director of Department of Optical Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research interest has been in the area of nanophotonics and fibre optics.

Abstract:The fibre-optic microwave photonic link has become one of the basic building blocks for microwave photonics. Increasing the optical power at the receiver is the best way to improve all link performance metrics including gain, noise figure and dynamic range. Even though lasers can produce and photodetectors can receive optical powers on the order of a Watt or more, the power-handling capability of optical fibres is orders-of-magnitude lower. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate the use of few-mode fibres to bridge this power-handling gap, exploiting their unique features of small acousto-optic effective area, large effective areas of optical modes, as well as orthogonality and walk-off among spatial modes. Using specially designed few-mode fibres, we demonstrate order-of-magnitude improvements in link performances for single-channel and multiplexed transmission. This work represents the first step in few-mode microwave photonics. The spatial degrees of freedom can also offer other functionalities such as large, tunable delays based on modal dispersion and wavelength-independent lossless signal combining, which are indispensable in microwave photonics.

Abstract:Space-division multiplexing (SDM) has attracted significant attention in recent years because larger transmission capacity is enabled by more degrees of freedom (DOFs) in few-mode fibers (FMFs) compared with single-mode fibers (SMFs). To transmit independent information on spatial modes without or with minor digital signal processing (DSP), weakly-coupled FMFs are preferred in various applications. Several cases with different use of spatial DOFs in weakly-coupled FMFs are demonstrated in this work, including single-mode or mode-group-multiplexed transmission, and spatial DOFs combined with time or frequency DOF to improve the system performance.

Optical Property of Few-Mode Fiber with Non-Uniform Refractive Index for Cylindrical Vector Beam Generation

Abstract:This paper investigates optical properties of few-mode fiber with non-uniform refractive index, namely: the few mode fiber with U-shape refractive index and the two-mode and four-mode few-mode fiber with bent radius. Finite element method is used to analyze the mode distributions based on their non-uniform refractive index. Effective mode control can be achieved through these few mode fibers to achieve vector beam generation. Finally, reflection spectra of a few-mode fiber Bragg grating are calculated theoretically and then measured under different bending conditions. Experimental results are in good accordance with the theoretical ones. These few mode fibers show potential applications in generation of cylindrical vector beam both for optical lasing and sensing systems.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.

Abstract:In recent years, optical fiber communication has gained widespread use in daily life due to its robust communication and transmission capabilities, strong confidentiality, anti-interference properties, and the availability of convenient and accessible materials. This technology has made remarkable strides in network communication and integrated device design, among other areas. This article will commence by discussing the fundamental structure of optical fibers and illustrating the propagation of optical signals within them. It will then analyze the benefits, such as higher transmission rates, wider frequency bands, and the low loss characteristics of optical fibers. Subsequently, the article will enumerate two of the most commonly utilized Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) technologies: Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology and optical amplifier technology. It will summarize their principles and strengths. Finally, the article will showcase the practical applications of optical fiber communication, particularly focusing on its role in 5G mobile communication, military operations, and radio and television communication.

Abstract:Ultrafast fiber lasers are indispensable components in the field of ultrafast optics, and their continuous performance advancements are driving the progress of this exciting discipline. Micro/Nanofibers (MNFs) possess unique properties, such as a large fractional evanescent field, flexible and controllable dispersion, and high nonlinearity, making them highly valuable for generating ultrashort pulses. Particularly, in tasks involving mode-locking and dispersion and nonlinearity management, MNFs provide an excellent platform for investigating intriguing nonlinear dynamics and related phenomena, thereby promoting the advancement of ultrafast fiber lasers. In this paper, we present an introduction to the mode evolution and characteristics of MNFs followed by a comprehensive review of recent advances in using MNFs for ultrafast optics applications including evanescent field modulation and control, dispersion and nonlinear management techniques, and nonlinear dynamical phenomenon exploration. Finally, we discuss the potential application prospects of MNFs in the realm of ultrafast optics.
