Abstract:Few-mode-fiber (FMF) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technique to further increase the transmission capacity of single mode fibers. We propose and numerically investigate a fiber-optical mode converter (MC) using long period gratings (LPGs) fabricated on the FMF by point-by-point CO2 laser inscription technique. In order to precisely excite three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP02), both untilted LPG and tilted LPG are comprehensively optimized through the length, index modulation depth, and tilt angle of the LPG in order to achieve a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20dB with less wavelength dependence. It is found that the proposed MCs have obvious advantages of high MCR, low mode crosstalk, easy fabrication and maintenance, and compact size.

Abstract:Mode division multiplexing (MDM) transmission based on few-mode fibers (FMFs) appears to be an alternative solution for overcoming the capacity limit of single-mode fibers (SMFs). A FMF coupler-based mode division multiplexer/demultiplexer (MMUX/DeMMUX) is proposed and theoretically investigated after the fabricated FMF is characterized. MMUXs/DeMMUXs with a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20 dB can be obtained for two-mode multiplexing and three-mode multiplexing over a wavelength span of 60 and 10 nm, respectively. We numerically verify the proposed MMUX/DeMMUX which has the advantages of high MCR, easy fabrication and maintenance, and low wavelength dependence.

Abstract:The fibre-optic microwave photonic link has become one of the basic building blocks for microwave photonics. Increasing the optical power at the receiver is the best way to improve all link performance metrics including gain, noise figure and dynamic range. Even though lasers can produce and photodetectors can receive optical powers on the order of a Watt or more, the power-handling capability of optical fibres is orders-of-magnitude lower. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate the use of few-mode fibres to bridge this power-handling gap, exploiting their unique features of small acousto-optic effective area, large effective areas of optical modes, as well as orthogonality and walk-off among spatial modes. Using specially designed few-mode fibres, we demonstrate order-of-magnitude improvements in link performances for single-channel and multiplexed transmission. This work represents the first step in few-mode microwave photonics. The spatial degrees of freedom can also offer other functionalities such as large, tunable delays based on modal dispersion and wavelength-independent lossless signal combining, which are indispensable in microwave photonics.

Abstract:The enormous traffic growth sets a stringent requirement to upgrade short-reach optical links to 1.6 TbE capacity in an economically viable way. The power consumption and latency in these links should be as low as possible, especially for high-speed computing. This is possible to achieve using high baudrate on-off keying links thanks to a better noise tolerance and a relaxed requirement on linearity for electronics and photonics. In this regard, we demonstrate a 200 Gbaud on-off keying link without any optical amplification using an externally modulated laser with 3.3 dBm of modulated output power operating at 1541.25 nm wavelength. We achieve transmission over 200 meters of single-mode fiber with performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction threshold for each baudrate and all selection of modulation formats. We also show 108 Gbaud on-off keying link with superior performance without decision feedback equalizer up to 400 meters of single-mode fiber. In addition, we benchmark the short-reach optical link with 112 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation and 100 Gbaud six-level pulse amplitude modulation. For 108 Gbaud on-off keying and 112 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation, we can achieve an even lower bit error rate.

Abstract:A numerical analysis is presented on the long-haul wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system employing fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) cascades based on one-pump FOPA model with Raman Effect taken into account. The end-to-end equalization scheme is applied to optimize the system features in terms of proper output powers and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in all the channels. The numerical results show that—through adjusting the fiber spans along with the number of FOPAs as well as the channel powers at the terminals in a prescribed way—the transmission distance and system performance can be optimized. By comparing the results generated by different lengths of fiber span, we come to the optimal span length to achieve the best transmission performance. Furthermore, we make a comparison among the long-haul WDM transmission systems employing different inline amplifiers, namely, FOPA, erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and Fiber Raman Amplifier (FRA). FOPA demonstrates its advantage over the other two in terms of system features.

Abstract:Based on a coupled-mode theory, the power transfer among many parallel single-mode optical fibers formed into "--" has been investigated. The analysis shows that the distance between each of the N fiber centers has an effect on the coupling coefficient and power transfer. The solution of the coupled-equation for three parallel single-mode optical fibers has been given, and is comparatively studied for different initial conditions. Numerical simulations show that power transfer will be periodical when coupling occur among many parallel single-mode optical fibers formed into "--".

Abstract:Recently, as the continual development of services and needs, people have a higher expectation on the optical communication system especially the passive optical network (PON). Deciding which kind of fiber to be the optimal media for PON is becoming a critical problem. This paper analyzed the feasibility for the applying of multimode fiber (MMF) in the future long haul, high bit-rate, and large capacity PON, and summarized the strengths and weakness of MMF. Then, initiating from the waveguide theory in the weakly guiding fiber and neglecting the intra-modal dispersion as well as nonlinearity, we built a simple model for multimode fiber, based on which we made analysis, research and comparison through simulation experiments on some performance improving techniques of MMF: offset launching, mode size changing, ring launching and feedback equalization. The simulation results demonstrated that the combination of field shaping and feedback equalization can obviously improve the transmission properties of MMF, because of which, the 10Gbit/s data can travel in the MMF for more than 1km.

Abstract:A natural choice for quantum communication is to use the relative phase between two paths of a single-photon for information encoding. This method was nevertheless quickly identified as impractical over long distances and thus a modification based on single-photon time-bins has then become widely adopted. It however, introduces a fundamental loss, which increases with the dimension and that limits its application over long distances. Here, we are able to solve this long-standing hurdle by employing a few-mode fiber space-division multiplexing platform working with orbital angular momentum modes. In our scheme, we maintain the practicability provided by the time-bin scheme, while the quantum states are transmitted through a few-mode fiber in a configuration that does not introduce post-selection losses. We experimentally demonstrate our proposal by successfully transmitting phase-encoded single-photon states for quantum cryptography over 500 m of few-mode fiber, showing the feasibility of our scheme.

Abstract:The feasibility for the applying of multimode fiber (MMF) in the future long haul, high bit-rate, and large capacity PON is analyzed, and the strengths and weakness of MMF are summarized. Then, initiating from the waveguide theory in the weakly guiding fiber and neglecting the intra-modal dispersion as well as nonlinearity, a simple model for multimode fiber is built, based on which analysis, research and comparison through simulation experiments on some performance improving techniques of MMF are made: offset launching, mode size changing, ring launching and feedback equalization. The simulation results demonstrated that the combination of field shaping (mainly ring launching) and feedback equalization can obviously improve the transmission properties of MMF, because of which, the 10 Gb/s data can travel in the MMF for more than 1 km.

Abstract:We show that quasi-single-mode transmission in few-mode fibers (FMFs) can reduce the number of spans for a fixed transmission distance and, consequently, the cost per bit for terrestrial transmission systems by minimizing both the Capex and Opex. The Gaussian-noise model is employed to estimate the nonlinear noise power spectral density both, which depends on the effective area of the FMF and span length, for Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and hybrid Raman/EDFA systems. Together with amplified spontaneous emission noise, an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) for a fixed transmission distance as a function of the effective area of the FMF and span length can be obtained. Given a target OSNR for a particular modulation format, we determine the maximum span length or the minimum number of spans as the effective area of the FMF varies both analytically and through numerical simulations. The effect of multipath interference in the FMF on the minimum number of span has also been investigated.

Abstract:There are a host of applications in communications, sensing, and science, in which analogue signal transmission is preferred over today's dominant digital transmission. In some of these applications, the advantage is in lower cost, while in others, it lies in superior performance. However, especially for longer analogue photonics links (up to 10 s of km), the performance is strongly limited by the impairments arising from using standard single-mode fibres (SSMF). Firstly, the three key metrics of analogue links (loss, noise figure, and dynamic range) tend to improve with received power, but this is limited by stimulated Brillouin scattering in SSMF. Further degradation is due to the chromatic dispersion of SSMF, which induces radio-frequency (RF) signal fading, increases even-order distortions, and causes phase-to-intensity-noise conversion. Further distortions still, are caused by the Kerr nonlinearity of SSMF. We propose to address all of these shortcomings by replacing SSMFs with hollow-core optical fibres, which have simultaneously six times lower chromatic dispersion and several orders of magnitude lower nonlinearity (Brillouin, Kerr). We demonstrate the advantages in this application using a 7.7 km long hollow-core fibre sample, significantly surpassing the performance of an SSMF link in virtually every metric, including 15 dB higher link gain and 6 dB lower noise figure.
