Abstract:Hardware implementation of artificial neural networks facilitates real-time parallel processing of massive data sets. Optical neural networks offer low-volume 3D connectivity together with large bandwidth and minimal heat production in contrast to electronic implementation. Here, we present a conceptual design for in-fiber optical neural networks. Neurons and synapses are realized as individual silica cores in a multi-core fiber. Optical signals are transferred transversely between cores by means of optical coupling. Pump driven amplification in erbium-doped cores mimics synaptic interactions. We simulated three-layered feed-forward neural networks and explored their capabilities. Simulations suggest that networks can differentiate between given inputs depending on specific configurations of amplification; this implies classification and learning capabilities. Finally, we tested experimentally our basic neuronal elements using fibers, couplers, and amplifiers, and demonstrated that this configuration implements a neuron-like function. Therefore, devices similar to our proposed multi-core fiber could potentially serve as building blocks for future large-scale small-volume optical artificial neural networks.

Abstract:Optical neural networks have long cast attention nowadays. Like other optical structured neural networks, fiber neural networks which utilize the mechanism of light transmission to compute can take great advantages in both computing efficiency and power cost. Though the potential ability of optical fiber was demonstrated via the establishing of fiber neural networks, it will be of great significance of combining both fiber transmission and computing functions so as to cater the needs of future beyond 5G intelligent communication signal processing. Thus, in this letter, the fiber neural networks and their related optical signal processing methods will be both developed. In this way, information derived from the transmitted signals can be directly processed in the optical domain rather than being converted to the electronic domain. As a result, both prominent gains in processing efficiency and power cost can be further obtained. The fidelity of the whole structure and related methods is demonstrated by the task of modulation format recognition which plays important role in fiber optical communications without losing the generality.

Abstract:We demonstrate the experimental implementation of photonic neural network for fiber nonlinearity compensation over a 10,080 km trans-pacific transmission link. Q-factor improvement of 0.51 dB is achieved with only 0.06 dB lower than numerical simulations.

Abstract:Multimode fibers provide a unique opportunity for exploring the spatial degrees of freedom for high throughput light transmission. However, the modal dispersion prevents from the straightforward application of multimode fibers for space division multiplexing, such as image transmission. Herein, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a deep neural network termed multimode fiber inverse-scattering net for overcoming the modal dispersion induced scrambling in multimode fibers. Such a network is capable of transmitting grayscale image through the multimode fiber with high fidelity. 256-level grayscale images with 128 x 128 spatial channels encoded in the input wavefront can be retrieved from the output optical speckle patterns, where the average Pearson correlation coefficient and structural similarity index are as large as 0.97 and 0.95, respectively. Our results demonstrate that the proposed deep neural network has an excellent ability for learning the relationship between the input and output optical fields of a multimode fiber, which might facilitate the realization of high throughput space division multiplexing through multimode fibers. Abstract:We designed, prototyped, and experimentally demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge, an optoelectronic spiking neuron inspired by the Izhikevich model incorporating both excitatory and inhibitory optical spiking inputs and producing optical spiking outputs accordingly. The optoelectronic neurons consist of three transistors acting as electrical spiking circuits, a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) for optical spiking outputs, and two photodetectors for excitatory and inhibitory optical spiking inputs. Additional inclusion of capacitors and resistors complete the Izhikevich-inspired optoelectronic neurons, which receive excitatory and inhibitory optical spikes as inputs from other optoelectronic neurons. We developed a detailed optoelectronic neuron model in Verilog-A and simulated the circuit-level operation of various cases with excitatory input and inhibitory input signals. The experimental results closely resemble the simulated results and demonstrate how the excitatory inputs trigger the optical spiking outputs while the inhibitory inputs suppress the outputs. Utilizing the simulated neuron model, we conducted simulations using fully connected (FC) and convolutional neural networks (CNN). The simulation results using MNIST handwritten digits recognition show 90% accuracy on unsupervised learning and 97% accuracy on a supervised modified FC neural network. We further designed a nanoscale optoelectronic neuron utilizing quantum impedance conversion where a 200 aJ/spike input can trigger the output from on-chip nanolasers with 10 fJ/spike. The nanoscale neuron can support a fanout of ~80 or overcome 19 dB excess optical loss while running at 10 GSpikes/second in the neural network, which corresponds to 100x throughput and 1000x energy-efficiency improvement compared to state-of-art electrical neuromorphic hardware such as Loihi and NeuroGrid.

Abstract:There has been a recent explosion of interest in neuromorphic computing capable of processing sophisticated and large-scale information based on spike coding, which has advantages in the implementation on electronic or optical neuromorphic systems. The neural engineering framework (NEF), a formal method for mapping attractor networks and control-theoretic algorithms to spiking neural networks, provides us a way to implement neuromorphic or numerical computing. In this paper, we implement the NEF on an optoelectronic architecture based on a photonic neuromorphic system. We discuss how electronic signals can be encoded to patterns of optical pulses, processed in the dynamic neural activity of recurrent network, and finally decoded back to the desired signals. These methods take advantage of the mechanism of spiking laser neurons and the wavelength division multiplexing protocol and explore the rapidity of optical pulses. Our work is mainly simulation with qualitative analysis. Simulation studies demonstrate three NEF principles on the proposed architecture with signals on nanosecond time scale, which run about six orders of magnitude faster than electronic counterparts on the NEF implementation. The present architecture can be also used in a broad domain of applications where more complex neuromorphic or numerical computing is necessary.

Abstract:The simultaneous advances in artificial neural networks and photonic integration technologies have spurred extensive research in optical computing and optical neural networks (ONNs). The potential to simultaneously exploit multiple physical dimensions of time, wavelength and space give ONNs the ability to achieve computing operations with high parallelism and large-data throughput. Different photonic multiplexing techniques based on these multiple degrees of freedom have enabled ONNs with large-scale interconnectivity and linear computing functions. Here, we review the recent advances of ONNs based on different approaches to photonic multiplexing, and present our outlook on key technologies needed to further advance these photonic multiplexing/hybrid-multiplexing techniques of ONNs.

Abstract:Due to their intrinsic capabilities on parallel signal processing, optical neural networks (ONNs) have attracted extensive interests recently as a potential alternative to electronic artificial neural networks (ANNs) with reduced power consumption and low latency. Preliminary confirmation of the parallelism in optical computing has been widely done by applying the technology of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in the linear transformation part of neural networks. However, inter-channel crosstalk has obstructed WDM technologies to be deployed in nonlinear activation in ONNs. Here, we propose a universal WDM structure called multiplexed neuron sets (MNS) which apply WDM technologies to optical neurons and enable ONNs to be further compressed. A corresponding back-propagation (BP) training algorithm is proposed to alleviate or even cancel the influence of inter-channel crosstalk on MNS-based WDM-ONNs. For simplicity, semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) are employed as an example of MNS to construct a WDM-ONN trained with the new algorithm. The result shows that the combination of MNS and the corresponding BP training algorithm significantly downsize the system and improve the energy efficiency to tens of times while giving similar performance to traditional ONNs.

Abstract:Optical artificial neural networks (ONNs), analog computing hardware tailored for machine learning, have significant potential for ultra-high computing speed and energy efficiency. We propose a new approach to architectures for ONNs based on integrated Kerr micro-comb sources that is programmable, highly scalable and capable of reaching ultra-high speeds. We experimentally demonstrate the building block of the ONN, a single neuron perceptron, by mapping synapses onto 49 wavelengths of a micro-comb to achieve a high single-unit throughput of 11.9 Giga-FLOPS at 8 bits per FLOP, corresponding to 95.2 Gbps. We test the perceptron on simple standard benchmark datasets, handwritten-digit recognition and cancer-cell detection, achieving over 90% and 85% accuracy, respectively. This performance is a direct result of the record small wavelength spacing (49GHz) for a coherent integrated microcomb source, which results in an unprecedented number of wavelengths for neuromorphic optics. Finally, we propose an approach to scaling the perceptron to a deep learning network using the same single micro-comb device and standard off-the-shelf telecommunications technology, for high-throughput operation involving full matrix multiplication for applications such as real-time massive data processing for unmanned vehicle and aircraft tracking.

Abstract:Optical computing promises to improve the speed and energy efficiency of machine learning applications 1,2,3,4,5,6 . However, current approaches to efficiently train these models are limited by in silico emulation on digital computers. Here we develop a method called fully forward mode (FFM) learning, which implements the compute-intensive training process on the physical system. The majority of the machine learning operations are thus efficiently conducted in parallel on site, alleviating numerical modelling constraints. In free-space and integrated photonics, we experimentally demonstrate optical systems with state-of-the-art performances for a given network size. FFM learning shows training the deepest optical neural networks with millions of parameters achieves accuracy equivalent to the ideal model. It supports all-optical focusing through scattering media with a resolution of the diffraction limit; it can also image in parallel the objects hidden outside the direct line of sight at over a kilohertz frame rate and can conduct all-optical processing with light intensity as weak as subphoton per pixel (5.40 × 10 18 - operations-per-second-per-watt energy efficiency) at room temperature. Furthermore, we prove that FFM learning can automatically search non-Hermitian exceptional points without an analytical model. FFM learning not only facilitates orders-of-magnitude-faster learning processes, but can also advance applied and theoretical fields such as deep neural networks, ultrasensitive perception and topological photonics.

Abstract:Incorporating optoelectronic integrated capability into artificial neurons can offer critical benefits of tunable device properties, diverse functions, and efficient computing capacity for artificial intelligent system. However, current reports are mostly focused on artificial neurons using an electric-driving mono-mode, while a facile and efficient approach to integrate electrical and optical signals is still lacking. Herein, a multifunctional optoelectronic hybrid-integrated neuron based on Ag nanoparticles-decorated MXene is proposed to achieve optoelectronic spatiotemporal information integration with low operating voltage of 0.93 V and high on/off ratio of 103, which are superior to those of majority of artificial neurons. An integrated visual perception system is developed by integrating artificial synapses, artificial optoelectronic neuron and robotic hand to emulate human conditional response. By integrating the optical sensory signals and electrical training signals, the response time of the system is significantly reduced. Finally, benefiting from the ability of spatiotemporal information integration, a multi-task pattern recognition in the spiking neural network composed of artificial synapses and neurons is completed, which can simultaneously recognize the digit patterns and rotation angles. Hence, this work exhibits the superiority in sensory and recognition tasks, which can pave the way for future application in neuromorphic circuits.

Versatile multimode fiber network with high capacity enabled by deep learning

Abstract:In the realm of spatial information transmission in multimode fiber (MMF), the MMF-based endoscopes and information encryption technologies have garnered considerable attention. However, existing designs are limited to establishing a single connection between one input node and one output node, thus constraining the capacity and application scenarios of MMF spatial information transmission. Here, we demonstrate a new concept of MMF-based physical networking for spatial information transmission, and develop a physical model and implementation method for establishing multi-node networking with various topological structures via cascading MMFs.We experimentally verify the feasibility of parallel transmission of spatial information at multiple nodes in an exemplary three-node MMF network with chain topology, showcasing its capability in transmitting color images through "node multiplexing" with significantly enhanced communication security through long-distance reprogrammable optical encryption. Designing MMF networks based on different node quantities and topological structures can significantly expand the scenarios for MMF spatial information transmission, providing valuable paradigms for various applications such as minimally invasive panoramic endoscopy, low-cost distributed sensing, and scaling optical reservoir computing.
Optical Axons for Electro-Optical Neural Networks

Abstract:Recently, neuromorphic sensors, which convert analogue signals to spiking frequencies, have ‎been reported for neurorobotics. In bio-inspired systems these sensors are connected to the main neural unit to perform ‎post-processing of the sensor data. The performance of spiking neural networks has been ‎improved using optical synapses, which offer parallel communications between the distanced ‎neural areas but are sensitive to the intensity variations of the optical signal. For systems with ‎several neuromorphic sensors, which are connected optically to the main unit, the use of ‎optical synapses is not an advantage. To address this, in this paper we propose and ‎experimentally verify optical axons with synapses activated optically using digital signals. The ‎synaptic weights are encoded by the energy of the stimuli, which are then optically transmitted ‎independently. We show that the optical intensity fluctuations and link's misalignment result ‎in delay in activation of the synapses. For the proposed optical axon, we have demonstrated line of ‎sight transmission over a maximum link length of 190 cm with a delay of 8 μs. Furthermore, we ‎show the axon delay as a function of the illuminance using a fitted model for which the root mean square error (RMS) ‎similarity is 0.95.

Abstract:Software implementations of brain-inspired computing underlie many important computational tasks, from image processing to speech recognition, artificial intelligence and deep learning applications. Yet, unlike real neural tissue, traditional computing architectures physically separate the core computing functions of memory and processing, making fast, efficient and low-energy computing difficult to achieve. To overcome such limitations, an attractive alternative is to design hardware that mimics neurons and synapses. Such hardware, when connected in networks or neuromorphic systems, processes information in a way more analogous to brains. Here we present an all-optical version of such a neurosynaptic system, capable of supervised and unsupervised learning. We exploit wavelength division multiplexing techniques to implement a scalable circuit architecture for photonic neural networks, successfully demonstrating pattern recognition directly in the optical domain. Such photonic neurosynaptic networks promise access to the high speed and high bandwidth inherent to optical systems, thus enabling the direct processing of optical telecommunication and visual data.

Optical mode manipulation using deep spatial diffractive neural networks

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the theoretical models and potential applications of spatial diffractive neural network (SDNN) structures, with a particular focus on mode manipulation. Our research introduces a novel diffractive transmission simulation method that employs matrix multiplication, alongside a parameter optimization algorithm based on neural network gradient descent. This approach facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the light field manipulation capabilities inherent to SDNNs. We extend our investigation to parameter optimization for SDNNs of various scales. We achieve the demultiplexing of 5, 11 and 100 orthogonal orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes using neural networks with 4, 10 and 50 layers, respectively. Notably, the optimized 100 OAM mode demultiplexer shows an average loss of 0.52 dB, a maximum loss of 0.62 dB, and a maximum crosstalk of -28.24 dB. Further exploring the potential of SDNNs, we optimize a 10-layer structure for mode conversion applications. This optimization enables conversions from Hermite-Gaussian (HG) to Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes, as well as from HG to OAM modes, showing the versatility of SDNNs in mode manipulation. We propose an innovative assembly of SDNNs on a glass substrate integrated with photonic devices. A 10-layer diffractive neural network, with a size of 49 mm × 7 mm × 7 mm, effectively demultiplexes 11 orthogonal OAM modes with minimal loss and crosstalk. Similarly, a 20-layer diffractive neural network, with a size of 67 mm × 7 mm × 7 mm, serves as a highly efficient 25-channel OAM to HG mode converter, showing the potential of SDNNs in advanced optical communications.

Abstract:Photonic spiking neural networks (PSNNs) potentially offer exceptionally high throughput and energy efficiency compared to their electronic neuromorphic counterparts while maintaining their benefits in terms of event-driven computing capability. While state-of-the-art PSNN designs require a continuous laser pump, this paper presents a monolithic optoelectronic PSNN hardware design consisting of an MZI mesh incoherent network and event-driven laser spiking neurons. The benchmark shows our PSNN can achieve 50 TOP/J energy efficiency, which corresponds to 100 × throughputs and 1000 × energy-efficiency improvements compared to state-of-art electrical neuromorphic hardware such as Loihi and NeuroGrid.
