Abstract:Porous nanosheet-structured electrode materials are very attractive for the high efficiency storage of electrochemical energy. Herein, a porous cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on Ni foam (Co9S8-NSA/NF) is successfully fabricated by a facile method, which involves the uniform growth of 2D Co-based leaf-like zeolitic imidazole frameworks (Co-ZIF-L) on Ni foam followed by subsequent sulfurization with thioacetamide (TAA). Benefiting from the unique porous nanosheet array architecture and conductive substrate, the Co9S8-NSA/NF exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a high capacitance (1098.8 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)), good rate capacity (54.6% retention at 10 A g(-1)) and long-term stability (87.4% retention over 1000 cycles), when acted as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. Furthermore, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor device using the as-fabricated Co9S8-NSA as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 20.0 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 828.5 W kg(-1). The method developed here can be extended to the construction of other structured metal (mono or mixed) sulfide electrode materials for more efficient energy storage.
A Zinc Cobalt Sulfide Nanosheet Array Derived from a 2D Bimetallic Metal-Organic Frameworks for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Porous ternary metal sulfide integrated electrode materials with abundant electroactive sites and redox reactions are very promising for supercapacitors. Herein, a porous zinc cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on Ni foam (Zn-Co-S/NF) was constructed by facile growth of 2D bimetallic zinc/cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Zn/Co-MOF) nanosheets with leaf-like morphology on NF, followed by additional sulfurization. The Zn-Co-S/NF nanosheet array acted directly as a supercapacitor electrode showing much better electrochemical performance (2354.3 Fg(-1) and 88.6% retention over 1000 cycles) when compared with zinc cobalt sulfide powder (355.3 Fg(-1) and 75.8% retention over 1000 cycles), which originates from good electrical conductivity and mechanical stability, abundant electroactive sites, and facilitated transportation of electrons and electrolyte ions due to the unique nanosheet array structure. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device assembled from Zn-Co-S/NF and activated carbon electrodes can deliver a highest energy density of 31.9 Whkg(-1) and a maximum power density of 8.5 kWkg(-1). Most importantly, this ASC also shows good cycling stability (71.0% retention over 10000 cycles). Furthermore, a red LED can be powered by two connected ASCs, and thus as-synthesized Zn-Co-S/NF has great potential for practical applications.
Co3S4 Nanoplate Arrays Decorated with Oxygen-Deficient CeO2 Nanoparticles for Supercapacitor Applications

Abstract:Cobalt sulfide is favorable for supercapacitors, but its application is inhibited by the inherent slow charge transfer kinetics and poor stability in alkaline solution. Herein, zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF)-derived Co3S4 nanoplate arrays (NPAs) decorated with CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) grown on Ni foam have been developed. The obtained Co3S4/CeO2-NPAs display a 2D leaf-like nanoplate morphology (average thickness of nearly 230 nm) with a large amount of oxygen vacancies and exhibits remarkably boosted specific capacity/capacitance, i.e., 1155.8 C/g (2408 F/g) at 0.5 A/g with a notable rate capability (76.5% at 10 A/g), compared to Co3S4-NPAs or CeO2 NPs. More importantly, a two-electrode cell comprising the Co3S4/CeO2-NPAs and an activated carbon electrode displays a high energy density of 45.4 Wh/kg (at a power density of 850 W/kg) with decent long-term durability. Furthermore, a red light-emitting diode can be lighted up for 10 min by two charged cells, showing great prospect of Co3S4/CeO2-NPAs. The outstanding electrochemical properties of the Co3S4/CeO2-NPAs are mainly attributed to the 2D nanoplate morphology with much accessible active sites and the introduction of CeO2 NPs. The Co3S4/CeO2-rich interfaces promote electron transfer between Co3S4 and CeO2. The abundant oxygen vacancies adhere to the surface of Co3S4 and can enhance the electronic conductivity and the capture of OH-. In addition, the CeO2 layer can protect the Co3S4-NPAs from corrosion by the KOH electrolyte during the electrochemical process. Therefore, the electrode developed by this work has great potential in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Integrated hybrid nanoarrays with hierarchical porous structures have attracted much attention as energy materials for their excellent synergistic effects. Herein, we provide a facile strategy for integrating a NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 hybrid nanoneedle array on nickel foam derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors and a Ni/Co-precursor by sulfurization. When directly used as the free-standing electrode for a supercapacitor, the NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1536.8 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1). Furthermore, the assembled NiCo2S4@Ni3S2//AC asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) exhibited a high energy density of 35.26 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 724.93 W kg(-1). The capacitance retention of NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 was up to 97.4% after 10000 cycles.

Abstract:Co3O4@CoNi-layered double hydroxide (LDH) core/shell nanosheet array on Ni foam was prepared as an integrated battery-type electrode for supercapacitors by growth of CoNi-LDH nanosheets shell on the surface of Co3O4 plates core. The resulting composite material exhibits high specific capacitance (2676.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. The improved electrochemical behavior is benefited from the typical mesoporous structure, which shorten the diffusion distance of OH-in the electrolyte and the strong core/shell binding interaction among Co3O4 and CoNi-LDH nanosheet arrays. Additionally, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASCs) device using as-fabricated Co3O4@CoNi-LDH as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 61.23 Wh kg(-1) at a high power density of 750 W kg(-1), furthermore, still remains 24.8 Wh kg(-1) even at a higher power density of 7500 W kg(-1). Most importantly, a red light-emitting diode (LED) can be illuminated by two connected ASCs, indicating that assynthesized Co3O4@ CoNi-LDH possesses great potential for practical applications. As a result, this work demonstrates a feasible strategy for the design and fabrication of metal oxides/LDH composites for applications in energy storage systems.
Fabrication of 2D/2D Nanosheet Heterostructures of ZIF-derived Co3S4 and G-C3n4 for Asymmetric Supercapacitors with Superior Cycling Stability

Abstract:Metal sulfides with high activity are favorable electrode materials for supercapacitors. However, their relatively inferior electronic conductivity and poor stability in alkaline electrolyte solutions impede their applications. To overcome these drawbacks, herein, 2D/2D nanosheet heterostructures of Co3S4 and g-C3N4 have been successfully fabricated by a facile method that involves the in situ growth of 2D Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (Co-ZIF-L) crystals on g-C3N4 nanosheets followed by subsequent sulfurization. The as-prepared Co3S4/g-C3N4-10 exhibits a largely enhanced specific capacity (415.0 C g-1 at 0.5 A g-1) in comparison with solitary g-C3N4 (18.9 C g-1) and Co3S4 (194.4 C g-1) derived from Co-ZIF-L. Furthermore, it also displays good rate capability (54.5% retention at 10 A g-1). The asymmetric supercapacitor fabricated from Co3S4/g-C3N4-10 and activated carbon electrodes exhibits an outstanding energy density of 35.7 W h kg-1 at a high power density of 850.2 W kg-1. Most importantly, the asymmetric supercapacitor demonstrates an ultrahigh cycling durability with only 1.9% capacitance loss after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g-1. This superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the unique 2D/2D nanosheet heterostructures providing rich active sites, short ion diffusion pathways, fast charge transfer as well as improved conductivity and mechanic stability. This work may pave the way for a rational design of the heterostructures of metal sulfides and g-C3N4 for electrochemical energy storage devices with a long cycling lifespan.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a new platform for the construction of various functional materials for energy related applications. Here, a facile MOF templating method is developed to fabricate a hierarchical nickel-cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on conductive Ni foam (Ni-Co-S/NF) as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. A uniform 2D Co-MOF nanowall array is first grown in situ on Ni foam in aqueous solution at room temperature, and then the Co-MOF nanowalls are converted into hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanoarchitectures via an etching and ion-exchange reaction with Ni(NO3)(2), and a subsequent solvothermal sulfurization. Taking advantage of the compositional and structural merits of the hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanosheet array and conductive Ni foam, such as fast electron transportation, short ion diffusion path, abundant active sites and rich redox reactions, the obtained Ni-Co-S/NF electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical capacitive performance (1406.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), 53.9% retention at 10 A g(-1) and 88.6% retention over 1000 cycles), which is superior to control CoS/NF. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled by using the as-fabricated Ni-Co-S/NF as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode delivers a high energy density of 24.8 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 849.5 W kg(-1). Even when the power density is as high as 8.5 kW kg(-1), the ASC still exhibits a high energy density of 12.5 W h kg(-1). This facile synthetic strategy can also be extended to fabricate other hierarchical integrated electrodes for high-efficiency electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices.
Metal-Organic Framework Templated 3D Hierarchical ZnCo2 O4 @Ni(OH)2 Core-Shell Nanosheet Arrays for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Designing core-shell electrode materials with desired components and architectures is a promising strategy for boosting electrochemical performance. Here, three-dimensional hierarchical ZnCo2 O4 @Ni(OH)2 core-shell nanosheet arrays have been successfully fabricated on a Ni foam substrate, in which the porous ZnCo2 O4 nanosheet "core" as the conductive scaffold was synthesized by a metal-organic framework (MOF)-templated method, and the ultrathin Ni(OH)2 nanoflakes "shell" with rich active sites were grafted on the ZnCo2 O4 nanosheet through a hydrothermal treatment. When directly used as a free-standing electrode for supercapacitor, these hierarchical ZnCo2 O4 @Ni(OH)2 core-shell nanosheet arrays exhibited a high capacitance of 3063.2 mF cm-2 (1021.1 F g-1 ) at the current density of 1 mA cm-2 . This electrode significantly outperformed individual Ni(OH)2 or ZnCo2 O4 nanosheet arrays, benefiting from the robust core-shell arrays on Ni foam with good electrical conductivity and abundant active sites, as well as the synergetic effect between MOF-derived porous ZnCo2 O4 "core" and the ultrathin Ni(OH)2 "shell". Moreover, the assembled ZnCo2 O4 @Ni(OH)2 //activated-carbon asymmetric supercapacitor displayed excellent energy and power densities (maximum of 40.0 Wh kg-1 and 8.02 kW kg-1 ) and superior cycling stability of 98.4 % retention with 91.2 % coulombic efficiency over 5 000 cycles at 10 A g-1 .
Well-defined hollow tube@sheets NiCo2S4 core-shell nanoarrays for ultrahigh capacitance supercapacitor

Abstract:Reasonable design of electrodes with well-defined nanostructure is the central aspect in the practical application of high-performance supercapacitors. Herein, hollow tube@sheets NiCo2S4 core-shell nanoarrays are rationally constructed to the free-standing electrode by in situ growing ZIF-67 on Co-precursor nanorods array and sequentially performing anion-exchange (S2-) and cation-exchange (Ni2+). The well-defined nanostructures can shorten the ion transport path in the charging-discharging process, increase the specific surface area and electrochemical active cites, which help in improving electrochemical performance. Therefore, the unique tube@sheets NiCo2S4 core-shell nanoarrays exhibit intriguing electrochemical performance and show excellent areal capacitance of 11.3 F cm-2 (3227.94 F g-1) at a current density of 2 mA cm-2 (2 A g-1). The assembled asymmetric supercapacitor device delivers a high energy density of 0.42 mW h cm-2 at a power density of 2.1 mW cm-2 and displays outstanding cyclic stability (90.2% retention after 5000 cycles). Consequently, the well-defined nanostructure engineering strategy is beneficial for designing active electrode materials for efficient energy storage devices.
Advanced binder-free electrodes based on CoMn2O4@Co3O4 core/shell nanostructures for high-performance supercapacitors

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical CoMn2O4@Co3O4 core/shell nanoneedle/nanosheet arrays for high-performance supercapacitors were designed and synthesized on Ni foam by a two-step hydrothermal route. The hybrid nanostructure exhibits much more excellent capacitive behavior compared with either the pristine CoMn2O4 nanoneedle arrays alone or Co3O4 nanosheets alone. The formation of an interconnected pore hybrid system is quite beneficial for the facile electrolyte penetration and fast electron transport. The CoMn2O4@Co3O4 electrode can achieve a high specific capacitance of 1627 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and 1376 F g-1 at 10 A g-1. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled by using the CoMn2O4@Co3O4 core/shell hybrid nanostructure arrays on Ni foam as a positive electrode and activated carbon as a negative electrode in an aqueous 3 M KOH electrolyte. A specific capacitance of 125.8 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 (89.2% retention after 5000 charge/discharge cycles at a current density of 2 A g-1) and a high energy density of 44.8 W h kg-1 was obtained. The results indicate that the obtained unique integrated CoMn2O4@Co3O4 nanoarchitecture may show great promise as ASC electrodes for potential applications in energy storage.
Cu(OH)2@NiC2O4 core-shell structure: A novel class nanoarrays electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitor

Abstract:Constructing heterostructured electrode materials is a promising strategy for improving the performance of supercapacitors. However, the performance of existing active materials does not meet the growing demand for energy storage devices. In this study, novel nanoarrays with Cu(OH)2 nanorod cores and nickel oxalate shells were grown on copper foam as electrode materials for boosting the performance of supercapacitors. The synthesized CF@Cu(OH)2@NiC2O4 can reach a specific capacitance of 9.7 F cm− 2 (3 mA cm−2), which presents a good enhancement for the precursor electrode. The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) prepared with activated carbon exhibited a high energy density of 0.97 mWh cm−2 (2.4 mW cm−2) and an excellent cycling performance (82.3% retention after 30,000 cycles at 100 mv/s). The improved properties are inferred to be attributed to the construction of the novel electrode with heterostructures. This study provides a new idea that core-shell hybrids with oxalate shells can be used as advanced electrode materials for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Cost-effective zinc oxide (ZnO) nanomaterials with high theoretical specific capacity have been regarded as one of the most prospective candidates for high-performance supercapacitor; however, its extensive application is limited by poor active sites and low conductivity, which increase the internal resistance of the electrode and reduce the capacity of the supercapacitor. Herein, we carried out a simple two-step method to synthesize a core-shell structure of ZnO core nanosheets enclosed in a shell of CoS (). This well-designed structure improves the electrical conductivity of the electrode, and the large specific surface area provides sufficient active sites. The as-prepared electrode exhibits a high specific capacity of 898.9 C g−1 at a current density of 3 mA cm−2, which is 1.47 and 1.70 times higher than those of ZnO and ZnO precursor. Moreover, the assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) with active carbon (AC) as the negative electrode and as the positive electrode displays an energy density of 45.2 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1039.1 W kg−1 as well as achieves excellent specific capacity of 2438 mC cm−2. The ASC also shows superior cycleability with 107% capacity retention after 11,000 cycles.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides have been widely explored as electrode materials for supercapacitors. Unfortunately, the slow redox reaction kinetics and severe volume changes during charge/discharge result in compromised electrochemical performance. In this work, a nickel-cobalt sulfide hollow nanosheets array decorated with cerium oxide nanoparticles (NiCoS/CeO2) has been constructed by using cobalt zeolitic imidazolate framework-L as the template coupled with subsequent solvolthermal synthesis. Benefiting from the advantages of the hollow and hierarchical NiCoS nanosheets with large accessible active sites and fast charge transport pathways, as well as CeO2 layer with rich oxygen vacancies and strong interaction between NiCoS and CeO2, the NiCoS/CeO2 exhibits a high specific capacity of 1278.1 C g−1 (1 A g−1), which is approximately 1.9 times that of the NiCoS. The asymmetric supercapacitor assembled from the NiCoS/CeO2 and an activated carbon shows excellent storage capability (34.9 W h kg−1 at 850.0 W kg−1) and impressive cycle life (91.9% capacitance retention after 10,000 charge and discharge cycles at 10 A g−1).

Abstract:Hierarchical ZnCo2O4@Ni(OH)(2) sheet composite structures on Ni foam were rationally designed and successfully synthesized. The ZnCo2O4 micro-sheets grown on Ni foam served as the skeleton to improve the electrical conductivity of redox active Ni(OH)(2) materials, providing more electroactive sites for the faradaic reaction, and solidify the Ni(OH)(2) materials onto Ni foam as a current collector. The electrode of ZnCo2O4@Ni(OH)(2) showed an ultrahigh areal capacitance of 4.6 F/cm(2) at a current density of 2 mA/cm(2). A lightweight and small asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device was successfully fabricated using the ZnCo2O4@Ni(OH)(2) and carbonized filter paper (CFP) as positive and negative electrode, respectively. Porous Co9S8 Nanosheet Arrays@Co Foam Electrode via in Situ Sulfidation at Room Temperature for Superior Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this work, novel porous Co9S8 nanosheet arrays are prepared on Co foam through a simple and scalable chemical liquid -phase processing strategy, which involves the uniform growth of cobalt hydroxide hydrogen phosphate microbelts followed by subsequent in situ sulfidation with sodium sulfide at room temperature. As -prepared porous Co9S8 nanosheet arrays can be directly used as binderless electrodes for a supercapacitor. Even at a high mass loading of 11.54 mg cm(-2), it delivers a high capacitance of 14518.9 mF cm -2 (1279.4 F g-') and an exceptional cycle life with a capacitance retention of 85.7% after 15000 cycles at 200 mA cm -2. Moreover, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor based on an activated carbon negative electrode delivers an encouraging energy density (42.9 W h kg(-1) at 828.5 W kg(-1)) and an excellent cycle life (86% retention after 10000 cycles). This method can be extended to design and construct other high-performance sulfide electrodes for supercapacitors and other energy storage systems.
Three-Dimensional Nico2o4@Mnmoo4 Core-Shell Nanoarrays for High-Performance Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Abstract:Design of new materials with sophisticated nanostructure has been proven to be an efficient strategy to improve their properties in many applications. Herein, we demonstrate the successful combination of high electron conductive materials of NiCo2O4 with high capacitance materials of MnMoO4 by forming a core-shell nanostructure. The NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 core-shell nanoarrays (CSNAs) electrode possesses high capacitance of 1169 F g(-1) (4.24 F cm(-2)) at a current density of 2.5 mA cm(-2), obviously larger than the pristine NiCo2O4 electrode. The asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs), assembled with NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 CSNAs as binder-free cathode and active carbon (AC) as anode, exhibit high energy density of 15 Wh kg(-1) and high power density of 6734 W kg(-1). Cycle performance of NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 CSNAs//AC ASCs, conducted at current density of 20 mA cm(-2), remain 96.45% of the initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles, demonstrating its excellent long-term cycle stability. Kinetically decoupled analysis reveals that the capacitive capacitance is dominant in the total capacitance of NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 CSNAs electrode, which may be the reason for ultra long cycle stability of ASCs. Our assembled button ASC can easily light up a red LED for 30 min and a green LED for 10 min after being charged for 30 s. The remarkable electrochemical performance of NiCo2O4@MnMoO4 CSNAs//AC ASCs is attributed to its enhanced surface area, abundant electroactive sites, facile electrolyte infiltration into the 3D NiCo2O4@MnMnO4 nanoarrays and fast electron and ion transport path.

Abstract:Cattail spike-like Co(OH)F@Co3O4 nanoporous arrays were successfully prepared on nickel foam by hydrothermal method and calcination treatment. The Co(OH)F@Co3O4 nanoarrays, combining the advantages of the Co(OH)F and the Co3O4, exhibit ultrahigh structural stability and excellent electrochemical performance. The specific capacitance of Co(OH)F@Co3O4 is 543F g−1 at the current density of 1A g−1 and could maintain 88.34 % specific capacitance after 5000 cycles at 10 A g−1. Moreover, a two-electrode system assembled by Co(OH)F@Co3O4 and reduced graphene oxide exhibits a peak energy density of 30.155 Wh kg−1 at the power density of 800 W kg−1 and possesses an excellent cycling retention of 84.88 % after 5000 cycles at 10A g−1. These results indicate that the prepared Co(OH)F@Co3O4 composite is a promising positive electrode material for supercapacitors.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical Co3O4@MnO2 nanosheet (NS) hybrid nanostructures are grown on carbon cloth by a facile method combining the metal–organic framework (MOF) templating process and electrodeposition. Due to the synergetic effect between Co3O4 triangle NSs and MnO2 NSs and the unique structure with large surface area and numerous channels for ion diffusion, the Co3O4@MnO2 core–shell NS array electrode shows good electrochemical properties with a high specific capacitance of 644.8 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, remarkable rate capability (capacitance retention of 64.5% at 20 A g−1) and excellent cycle performance (capacitance retention of 91% after 3000 cycles at 5 A g−1). The excellent electrochemical performance makes the Co3O4@MnO2 core–shell NSs promising candidates in supercapacitors.
