Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a new platform for the construction of various functional materials for energy related applications. Here, a facile MOF templating method is developed to fabricate a hierarchical nickel-cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on conductive Ni foam (Ni-Co-S/NF) as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. A uniform 2D Co-MOF nanowall array is first grown in situ on Ni foam in aqueous solution at room temperature, and then the Co-MOF nanowalls are converted into hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanoarchitectures via an etching and ion-exchange reaction with Ni(NO3)(2), and a subsequent solvothermal sulfurization. Taking advantage of the compositional and structural merits of the hierarchical Ni-Co-S nanosheet array and conductive Ni foam, such as fast electron transportation, short ion diffusion path, abundant active sites and rich redox reactions, the obtained Ni-Co-S/NF electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical capacitive performance (1406.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), 53.9% retention at 10 A g(-1) and 88.6% retention over 1000 cycles), which is superior to control CoS/NF. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) assembled by using the as-fabricated Ni-Co-S/NF as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode delivers a high energy density of 24.8 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 849.5 W kg(-1). Even when the power density is as high as 8.5 kW kg(-1), the ASC still exhibits a high energy density of 12.5 W h kg(-1). This facile synthetic strategy can also be extended to fabricate other hierarchical integrated electrodes for high-efficiency electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices.

Abstract:Integrated hybrid nanoarrays with hierarchical porous structures have attracted much attention as energy materials for their excellent synergistic effects. Herein, we provide a facile strategy for integrating a NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 hybrid nanoneedle array on nickel foam derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) precursors and a Ni/Co-precursor by sulfurization. When directly used as the free-standing electrode for a supercapacitor, the NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 1536.8 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1). Furthermore, the assembled NiCo2S4@Ni3S2//AC asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) exhibited a high energy density of 35.26 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 724.93 W kg(-1). The capacitance retention of NiCo2S4@Ni3S2 was up to 97.4% after 10000 cycles.

Abstract:The conductive two-dimensional metal-organic framework (Ni-CAT) nanocones were decorated on the flower petals surface of layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) based nanoflowers, just like the surface microstructure of lotus leaves. This interesting composite structure displays excellent specific capacitance of 882 F g(-1) at a current density of 1 A g(-1), resulting from the synergistic between Ni-CAT and NiCo-LDH. An assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) using NiCo-LDH@Ni-CAT as positive electrode, which also diaplays high energy density of 23.5 Wh kg(-1) at power density of 394.6 W kg(-1) and long-term cycling stability up to 82% after 10,000 cycles. Therefore, this work demonstrates an excellent method of the designing and fabricating hybrid electrode materials based on conductive two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks and layered double hydroxides to apply in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Co3O4@CoNi-layered double hydroxide (LDH) core/shell nanosheet array on Ni foam was prepared as an integrated battery-type electrode for supercapacitors by growth of CoNi-LDH nanosheets shell on the surface of Co3O4 plates core. The resulting composite material exhibits high specific capacitance (2676.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. The improved electrochemical behavior is benefited from the typical mesoporous structure, which shorten the diffusion distance of OH-in the electrolyte and the strong core/shell binding interaction among Co3O4 and CoNi-LDH nanosheet arrays. Additionally, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASCs) device using as-fabricated Co3O4@CoNi-LDH as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 61.23 Wh kg(-1) at a high power density of 750 W kg(-1), furthermore, still remains 24.8 Wh kg(-1) even at a higher power density of 7500 W kg(-1). Most importantly, a red light-emitting diode (LED) can be illuminated by two connected ASCs, indicating that assynthesized Co3O4@ CoNi-LDH possesses great potential for practical applications. As a result, this work demonstrates a feasible strategy for the design and fabrication of metal oxides/LDH composites for applications in energy storage systems.

Abstract:Porous nanosheet-structured electrode materials are very attractive for the high efficiency storage of electrochemical energy. Herein, a porous cobalt sulfide nanosheet array on Ni foam (Co9S8-NSA/NF) is successfully fabricated by a facile method, which involves the uniform growth of 2D Co-based leaf-like zeolitic imidazole frameworks (Co-ZIF-L) on Ni foam followed by subsequent sulfurization with thioacetamide (TAA). Benefiting from the unique porous nanosheet array architecture and conductive substrate, the Co9S8-NSA/NF exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a high capacitance (1098.8 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)), good rate capacity (54.6% retention at 10 A g(-1)) and long-term stability (87.4% retention over 1000 cycles), when acted as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitors. Furthermore, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor device using the as-fabricated Co9S8-NSA as the positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as the negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 20.0 W h kg(-1) at a high power density of 828.5 W kg(-1). The method developed here can be extended to the construction of other structured metal (mono or mixed) sulfide electrode materials for more efficient energy storage.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great advantages as new kinds of active materials for energy storage. In this study, bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (Ni/Co-MOFs) with nanosheet-assembled flower-like structures were synthesized by etching Ni-MOF microspheres in a cobalt nitrate solution. It can be clearly observed that the amount of Co(NO3)2 and etching time play crucial roles in the formation of Ni/Co-MOF nanosheets. The Ni/Co-MOFs were used as electrode materials for supercapacitors and the optimized Ni/Co-MOF-5 exhibited the highest capacitances of 1220.2 F g-1 and 986.7 F g-1 at current densities of 1 A g-1 and 10 A g-1, respectively. Ni/Co-MOF-5 was further sulfurized, and the derived Ni-Co-S electrode showed a higher specific capacitance of 1377.5 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1 and a retention of 89.4% when the current density was increased to 10 A g-1, indicating superior rate capability. Furthermore, Ni/Co-MOF-5 and Ni-Co-S showed excellent cycling stability, i.e. about 87.8% and 93.7% of initial capacitance can be still maintained after 3000 cycles of charge-discharge. More interestingly, the Ni/Co-MOF-5//AC ASC shows an energy density of 30.9 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1132.8 W kg-1, and the Ni-Co-S//AC ASC displays a high energy density of 36.9 W h kg-1 at a power density of 1066.42 W kg-1. These results demonstrate that the as-synthesized bimetallic Ni/Co-MOF nanosheets and their derived nickel-cobalt sulfides have promising applications in electrochemical supercapacitors.

Abstract:Binary transition metal sulfides are considered to be a promising material for supercapacitors, possessing richer electrochemically active sites and superior electrochemical performance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are often used as self-sacrificing templates in the preparation of metal sulfides. Usually, direct sulfidation of MOFs tends to cause collapse of the morphological structure and blockage of the ion transport channels, so that the morphology of the original MOF template can be well preserved by using pyrolysis followed by S2- ion exchange. In this paper, we first prepared NiCo-MOF-74 on nickel foam by an in situ transformation method from layered double hydroxides (LDHs) through a ligand exchange reaction. Then, CoNi2S4 was synthesized in two steps involving the pyrolysis of NiCo-MOF-74 and a subsequent S2- ion exchange reaction. Compared with direct sulfidation, this synthetic strategy can well maintain the rod-like morphology of MOF-74 arrays and prevent structural collapse. The surface of CoNi2S4 has a fine nanosheet structure, which exposes more active sites and shows a high specific capacitance of 7.50 F cm-2 at 2 mA cm-2 and an excellent Coulomb efficiency (96.32%). In addition, the hybrid supercapacitor assembled with activated carbon shows a high energy density of 0.64 mW h cm-2 at a power density of 1.64 mW cm-2 and a high capacitance retention of 88.39% after 5000 cycles. These results indicate that rod-shaped CoNi2S4 can be controllably prepared from MOF-74 involving an exchange reaction and has promising application in high-performance supercapacitors.
Metal-Organic Framework Templated 3D Hierarchical ZnCo2 O4 @Ni(OH)2 Core-Shell Nanosheet Arrays for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:Designing core-shell electrode materials with desired components and architectures is a promising strategy for boosting electrochemical performance. Here, three-dimensional hierarchical ZnCo2 O4 @Ni(OH)2 core-shell nanosheet arrays have been successfully fabricated on a Ni foam substrate, in which the porous ZnCo2 O4 nanosheet "core" as the conductive scaffold was synthesized by a metal-organic framework (MOF)-templated method, and the ultrathin Ni(OH)2 nanoflakes "shell" with rich active sites were grafted on the ZnCo2 O4 nanosheet through a hydrothermal treatment. When directly used as a free-standing electrode for supercapacitor, these hierarchical ZnCo2 O4 @Ni(OH)2 core-shell nanosheet arrays exhibited a high capacitance of 3063.2 mF cm-2 (1021.1 F g-1 ) at the current density of 1 mA cm-2 . This electrode significantly outperformed individual Ni(OH)2 or ZnCo2 O4 nanosheet arrays, benefiting from the robust core-shell arrays on Ni foam with good electrical conductivity and abundant active sites, as well as the synergetic effect between MOF-derived porous ZnCo2 O4 "core" and the ultrathin Ni(OH)2 "shell". Moreover, the assembled ZnCo2 O4 @Ni(OH)2 //activated-carbon asymmetric supercapacitor displayed excellent energy and power densities (maximum of 40.0 Wh kg-1 and 8.02 kW kg-1 ) and superior cycling stability of 98.4 % retention with 91.2 % coulombic efficiency over 5 000 cycles at 10 A g-1 .

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as a class of promising electrode materials for supercapacitors owing to their large surface area, rich porosity, and variable redox sites; however, direct application of pristine MOFs in energy storage has been largely hindered by their poor electrical conductivity and stability,Carbon cloth issues. In this work, we demonstrate a facile two-step approach to a address the controlled growth of Ni-MOF arrays on the surface of NiCo2O4 nanowires by modulating the formation reaction of MOFs. By taking advantage of the intriguing merits from the NiCo2O4 core and Ni-MOF shell as well as their synergistic effects, the optimized NiCo2O4@Ni-MOF hybrid electrode exhibits boosted electrochemical performance, in terms of high specific capacity (208.8 mA h/g at 2 mA/cm(2)) and good rate capability. In addition, the assembled flexible solid-state HSC device based on the optimized NiCo2O4@Ni-MOF and activated carbon as the cathode and anode achieves a maximum energy density of 32.6 W h/kg at a power density of 348.9 W/kg without sacrificing its outstanding cycling performance (nearly 100% retention over 6000 cycles at 8 mA/cm(2)) and mechanical stability, outperforming most recently reported MOF-based HSC devices in an aqueous electrolyte. Our work demonstrates the possibility of exploiting novel MOF-based hybrid arrays as battery-type electrodes with enhanced electrochemical properties, which exhibits great potential in flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:Designing and synthesizing core/shell nanostructures materials as binder-free electrodes is an effective strategy to enhance the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. In this work, the hierarchical NiCo2O4@NiFe-layered double hydroxide core/shell arrays are successfully constructed via a stepwise hydrothermally grow method and investigated for application in supercapacitors. With the assistance of the hierarchical core/shell structures and the synergetic effect between NiCo2O4 and NiFe-layered double hydroxide nanosheets, the hybrid electrode discloses significant melioration in property, including the improvement in number of the electro-chemically active sites and short transport path lengths for both electrons and ions. Thus, the core/shell electrode exhibits remarkable electrochemical performance, such as a high areal capacity (12.3 F cm(-2)) and good cycling stability (83.1% capacitance retention after 2000 cycles). Our trials testify that the hierarchical NiCo2O4@NiFe-layered double hydroxide core/shell nanowire arrays are advantageous for potential applications in energy storage devices.
MnO2 Nanosheets Decorated MOF-Derived Co3O4 Triangle Nanosheet Arrays for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical Co3O4@MnO2 nanosheet (NS) hybrid nanostructures are grown on carbon cloth by a facile method combining the metal–organic framework (MOF) templating process and electrodeposition. Due to the synergetic effect between Co3O4 triangle NSs and MnO2 NSs and the unique structure with large surface area and numerous channels for ion diffusion, the Co3O4@MnO2 core–shell NS array electrode shows good electrochemical properties with a high specific capacitance of 644.8 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, remarkable rate capability (capacitance retention of 64.5% at 20 A g−1) and excellent cycle performance (capacitance retention of 91% after 3000 cycles at 5 A g−1). The excellent electrochemical performance makes the Co3O4@MnO2 core–shell NSs promising candidates in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Two types of homogeneous NiCo2O4 nanosheet@ NiCo2O4 nanorod and heterogeneous NiCo2O4 nanosheet@ NiO nanoflake hierarchical core- shell arrays are synthesized via facile solution methods in combination with a simple thermal treatment. In both cases, the NiCo2O4 nanosheets serve as the core backbone for anchoring the shell materials. The two as- prepared hierarchical nanoarrays are evaluated as supercapacitor electrodes and demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance with high specific capacitance (1925 and 2210 F g(-1) for NiCo2O4@ NiCo2O4 and NiCo2O4@ NiO at 0.5 A g(-1), respectively), good rate capability, and superior cycling stability. The superior capacitive performance is mainly due to the unique hierarchical core- shell architecture with faster ion/electron transfer, improved reactivity, and enhanced structural stability. Our work can allow for the fabrication of various NiCo2O4 nanosheet supported hierarchical nanostructures for applications in energy storage, catalysis, and sensing.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted intensive attention for high-performance supercapacitors owing to their large specific surface area and tunable pore structure. Herein, ultrathin NiCo-MOF nanosheets are fabricated by a facile ultrasonication at room temperature and employed as a supercapacitor electrode material. The unique nanosheet-like structure of NiCo-MOF provides more electroactive sites and a shorter pathway for electron transfer and electrolyte diffusion, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance with a high specific capacitance of 1202.1 F g–1 at 1 A g–1. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor of NiCo-MOF//activated carbon was assembled in 2 M KOH electrolyte. It delivers an energy density of 49.4 W h kg–1 at a power density of 562.5 W h kg–1 in a voltage window of 1.5 V. The results demonstrate a new method to fabricate ultrathin MOF nanosheets for high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials.

Here, we report the fabrication of NiCo2S4@NiMoO4 nanotube/nanosheet arrays on Ni foam through multi-step hydrothermal processes. Ultrathin and mesoporous NiMoO4 nanosheets are controllably grown on the surface of NiCo2S4 nanotubes. By taking advantage of the good electrical conductivity, high porosity and interconnected features of NiMoO4 shell nanosheets and the tubular structure of the NiCo2S4 core, the optimized hybrid electrode can achieve favourable fast electron transport and ion diffusion kinetics, and delivers a high areal capacity of 673.3 mu A h cm(-2) at 5 mA cm(-2) with excellent rate capability (94.6% retention at 100 mA cm(-2)), superior to many reported values of Ni-Co sulfide based electrodes. Furthermore, the HSC devices fabricated by employing NiCo2S4@ NiMoO4 and activated carbon (AC) as the cathode and anode, respectively, exhibit a maximum energy density of 33.1 W h kg(-1) at a power density of 219 W kg(-1), as well as good cycling stability, retaining 83.5% of the initial capacity over 2000 cycles at 20 mA cm(-2). These results imply the great potential of such core-shell hybrid nano-structures as advanced battery-type electrodes for applications in energy storage devices.
Metal Organic Framework Derived CoS2@Ni(OH)2 Core-Shell Structure Nanotube Arrays for High-Performance Flexible Hybrid Supercapacitors

Abstract:The rational design of hybrid structures which consist of multiple components with distinctive characteristics is an effective strategy for developing materials when energy storage applications. In this paper, a novel hierarchical CoS2@Ni(OH)(2) core-shell nanotube array covered carbon cloth is successfully designed and synthesized for use in supercapacitors (SCs). The CoS2 nanotube (NT) arrays are synthesized using the metal organic framework template method, and serve as the scaffold for the growth of ultrathin Ni(OH)(2) nanosheets via the electrodeposition process. The optimized CoS2@Ni(OH)(2) hybrid electrode exhibits high specific capacity of 743 C g(-1) at current density of 1 A g(-1), which is nearly 5.9 times higher than that of a single CoS2 electrode. In addition, a solid state hybrid supercapacitor device is fabricated with CoS2@Ni(OH)(2) hybrid electrode as positive and activated carbon as negative. The as-prepared devices deliver high energy density (29.22 W h kg(-1) at 899.2 W kg(-1)) and high power density (8.99 kW kg(-1) at 11.74 W h kg(-1)), as well as good cycling stability (85.5% retention of specific capacitance after 3000 cycles). The devices also display excellent flexible properties under different bending conditions. The present work shows that electrode materials with hybrid structure have considerable application prospect for flexible energy storage and conversion. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Hierarchical NiCo2O4 nanostructured arrays decorated over the porous Ni/C as battery-type electrodes for supercapacitors

Abstract:The rational construction of hierarchical electrode materials has always been an attractive strategic development in energy storage. In this paper, the porous Ni/C (NC) substrate, which is derived from Ni metal-organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs), are served as the conductive skeleton on Ni foam (NF) for supporting two different morphologies NiCo2O4 nanostructure arrays (NiCo2O4/NC). The hierarchical layered nanomaterial utilizes the porous NC substrate as "favorable skeleton" for electron transfer and is coupled to vertical well-organized NiCo2O4 nanoarrays to improve specific capacitance of composites. Benefits from the advantages of hierarchical layered structure, the electrochemical properties of as-constructed NiCo2O4/NC with two different morphologies were better than those of pure NiCo2O4 prepared under the same conditions. Moreover, the optimized NiCo2O4 nanowires arrays on NC substrate (NiCo2O4NWs/NC) electrode acquire prominent specific capacitance of 1945.9 F g-1 (270.3 mAh g-1) at 1 A g-1 and good rate performance. Additionally, the assembled asymmetric device by NiCo2O4NWs/NC and carbon nanotube (CNT) displays a high energy density of 58.31 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 749.7 W kg-1, as well as good cyclic stability. The remarkable properties manifest that the hierarchical NiCo2O4NWs/NC electrode has a good prospect in electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Herein, binder-free hierarchically structured nickel cobalt sulfide nanoflakes on CoO nanosheets with the help of carbon layer (Ni-Co-S@C@CoO NAs) are fabricated via hydrothermal synthesis, carbonization treatment and electrodeposition, where three key components (CoO nanosheet arrays, a carbon layer and Ni-Co-S nanoflakes) are strategically combined to construct an efficient electrode for supercapacitors. The highly well-defined COO nanosheets are utilized as ideal conductive scaffolds, where the conductivity is further improved by coating carbon layer, as well as the large electroactive surface area of Ni-Co-S nanoflakes. Furthermore, self-supported electrodes are directly grown on Ni foam without conductive additives or binders, which can effectively simplify the whole preparation process and achieve excellent electrical contact. Benefiting from the unique structural features, the hierarchically structured Ni-Co-S@C@CoO NAs exhibit high specific capacitance up to 4.97 F cm(-2), excellent rate capability, and maintains 93.2% of the initial capacitance after 10000 cycles. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor using the Ni-Co-S@C@CoO NAs electrode and activated carbon is assembled, which achieves a high energy density (49.7 W h kg(-1)) with long cycling lifespan. These results demonstrate the as-fabricated Ni-Co-S@C@CoO NAs can be a competitive battery-like electrode for supercapacitors in energy storages. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
