Abstract:Pentagonal compounds, as a new family of 2D materials, have recently been extensively studied in the fields of electrocatalysis, photovoltaics, and thermoelectrics. Encouraged by the successful synthesis of pentagonal PdSe2, the thermoelectric properties of low-cost pentagonal NiX2 (X = S, Se, and Te) monolayers are theoretically predicted with the help of first-principles calculations and the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The high dynamic and thermal stabilities of pentagonal NiX2 (X = S, Se, and Te) monolayers are confirmed according to the phonon dispersion spectrums and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. Indirect semiconductor features with wide bandgaps of 2.44, 2.31, and 1.88 eV at the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE06) level are discovered for pentagonal NiS2, NiSe2, and NiTe2 monolayers. Combining the Boltzmann transport equation and deformation potential theory, the Seebeck coefficient, power factor, and thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of NiX2 (X = S, Se, and Te) monolayers are evaluated from 300 to 600 K. The strongly anisotropic ZT values are discovered, which are attributed to the significant differences in electrical and thermal transport along the x and y directions. In addition, low lattice thermal conductivities are observed at 600 K for the pentagonal NiTe2 monolayer, accompanying higher ZT values of 1.81 and 1.58 along the x and y directions. The predicted thermoelectric properties indicate that the low-cost pentagonal NiSe2 and NiTe2 monolayers are potential anisotropic thermoelectric materials with high performance.
Few-Layer PdSe2 Sheets: Promising Thermoelectric Materials Driven by High Valley Convergence

Abstract:Herein, we report a comprehensive study on the structural and electronic properties of bulk, monolayer, and multilayer PdSe2 sheets. First, we present a benchmark study on the structural properties of bulk PdSe2 by using 13 commonly used density functional theory (DFT) functionals. Unexpectedly, the most commonly used van der Waals (vdW)-correction methods, including DFT-D2, optB88, and vdW-DF2, fail to provide accurate predictions of lattice parameters compared to experimental data (relative error > 15%). On the other hand, the PBE-TS series functionals provide significantly improved prediction with a relative error of <2%. Unlike hexagonal two-dimensional materials like graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and h-BN, the conduction band minimum of monolayer PdSe2 is not located along the high symmetry lines in the first Brillouin zone; this highlights the importance of the structure-property relationship in the pentagonal lattice. Interestingly, high valley convergence is found in the conduction and valence bands in monolayer, bilayer, and trilayer PdSe2 sheets, suggesting promising application in thermoelectric cooling.
Low‐Symmetry PdSe2 for High Performance Thermoelectric Applications

However, its TE properties have yet to be experimentally demonstrated. Here, the TE transport in 2D PdSe(2)with a low-symmetry pentagonal lattice is probed for the first time. By thickness-engineering, it is demonstrated that the TE property of PdSe(2)can be effectively manipulated due to its sensitive dependence on the interlayer coupling originating from the special lattice structure. The TE performance can be largely enhanced benefiting from the high band convergence and quantum confinement in thinner PdSe(2)flakes. A power factor as high as 1.5 mW m(-1)K(-2)can be achieved for a PdSe(2)flake with a thickness of 5 nm. This work provides the first TE study on a pentagonal lattice as opposed to hexagonal lattices that dominate the 2D layered material family. The unique lattice structure with special interlayer interaction in PdSe(2)opens up new pathways for TE applications, low-dimensional electronics, and quantum devices.

Abstract:Low-symmetry Penta-PdPSe with intrinsic in-plane anisotropy synthesized successfully [(P. Li et al., Adv. Mater., 2102541, (2021)]. Motivated by this experimental discovery, we investigate the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties of PdPSe monolayer via density functional theory calculations. The phonon dispersion, molecular dynamics simulation, the cohesive energy mechanical properties of the penta-PdPSe monolayer is verified to confirm its stability. The phonon spectrum represents a striking gap between the high-frequency and the low-frequency optical branches and an out-of-plane flexure mode with a quadratic dispersion in the long-wavelength limit. The Poissons ratio indicates that penta-PdPSe is a brittle monolayer. The penda-PdPSe monolayer is an indirect semiconductor with bandgap of 1.40 (2.07) eV using PBE (HSE06) functional. Optical properties simulation suggests that PdPSe is capable of absorbing a substantial range of visible to ultraviolet light. Band alignment analysis also reveals the compatibility of PdPSe for water splitting photocatalysis application. By combining the electrical and thermal transport properties of PdPSe, we show that a high PF is achievable at room temperature, thus making PdPSe a candidate material for thermoelectric application. Our findings reveal the strong potential of penta-PdPSe monolayer for a wide array of applications, including optoelectronic, water splitting and thermoelectric device applications.
2D‐Penta‐PdPS: Gate‐Tunable and Thickness‐Dependent Thermoelectric Transport

Abstract:This work presents the thermoelectric properties of 2D‐penta‐PdPS, particularly focusing on the impact of layer thickness and back‐gate voltage on their thermoelectric performance across a temperature range of 20–380 K. It reveals that the thermoelectric power factors of 2D‐penta‐PdPS improve with fewer layers, peaking at ≈50 μW m−1K−2 for 11‐layer PdPS, about twice than that of 88‐layer PdPS. Pentagonal two‐dimensional (2D) materials are notable for unique properties derived from their Cairo pentagonal tiling topology. This study explores the thermoelectric potential of exfoliated penta‐palladium‐phosphorus‐sulfur (PdPS) atomic layers, an air‐stable 2D semiconductor with a puckered pentagonal low‐symmetry structure, grown via chemical vapor transport (CVT). Thickness‐dependent in‐plane electrical conductivity (σ) and thermoelectric power factor (PF) of PdPS are investigated from 20–380 K, showing an increase in σ with thickness (11, 13, and 88‐layer). Applying back‐gate voltage (Vg) modulates the Fermi energy (EF), and as Vg decreases, the Seebeck coefficient (S) rises, achieving S of −700 μV K−1 for 11‐layer PdPS at −10 V, significantly higher than the −400 μV K−1 for 88‐layer PdPS. The PF increased with decreasing thickness, peaking at ≈50 μW m−1 K−2 for 11‐layer PdPS, about twice than that of 88‐layer PdPS. The high electron mobility (μe) in PdPS is confined to a narrow temperature range, peaking at 300 cm2 Vs−1 at 100 K, marking the transition temperature from ionized impurity scattering to acoustic phonon scattering mechanism, consistent across all layer counts. This work highlights the significant impact of quantum confinement in ultrathin bodies in enhancing thermoelectric performance across a wide temperature range.

Anisotropic Thermoelectric Materials: Pentagonal PtM 2 (M = S, Se, Te)

Abstract:We here report a new pentagonal network structure of the PtM2 (M = S, Se, Te) monolayers with the P21/c (no. 14) space group. The electronic structure and thermoelectric properties of the pentagonal PtM2 monolayers are calculated through the VASP and BoltzTraP codes. We verify their dynamic and thermodynamic stabilities by calculating their phonon spectra and simulating ab initio molecular dynamics. It is found that the new material belongs to the medium-wide indirect band gap semiconductors from the PBE and HSE06 methods. At 300 K, the lattice thermal conductivities (Kl) of the pentagonal PtTe2 in the x and y directions are the smallest among these three materials, being 1.77 and 5.17 W/m K, respectively. The anisotropic zT values (2.60/1.14) in the x/y direction of the pentagonal PtTe2 at 300 K are much greater than those of the pentagonal PtSe2 (1.75/0.82) and the pentagonal PtS2 (0.58/0.16) at 300 K. Pd$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ Monolayer: A Promising Two Dimensional Thermoelectric Material with Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity and High Power Factor

Abstract:A high power factor and low lattice thermal conductivity are two essential ingredients of highly efficient thermoelectric materials. Although monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides possess high power factors, high lattice thermal conductivities significantly impede their practical applications. Our first-principles calculations show that these two ingredients are well fulfilled in the recently synthesized Pd$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ monolayer, whose crystal structure is composed of [Se$_{2}$]$^{2-}$ dimers, Se$^{2-}$ anions, and Pd$^{2+}$ cations coordinated in a square planar manner. Our detailed analysis of third-order interatomic force constants reveals that the anharmonicity and soft phonon modes associated with [Se$_2$]$^{2-}$ dimers lead to ultra-low lattice thermal conductivities in Pd$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ monolayers (1.5 and 2.9 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ along the $a$- and $b$-axes at 300\,K respectively), which are comparable to those of high-performance bulk thermoelectric materials such as PbTe. Moreover, the "pudding-mold" type band structure, caused by Pd$^{2+}$ ($d^{8}$) cations coordinated in a square planar crystal field, leads to high power factors in Pd$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ monolayers. Consequently, both electron and hole doped thermoelectric materials with a considerably high $zT$ can be achieved at moderate carrier concentrations, suggesting that Pd$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ is a promising two-dimensional thermoelectric material.

Janus $β$-PdXY (X/Y = S, Se, Te) Materials with high Anisotropic Thermoelectric Performance

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered considerable attention as an emerging thermoelectric (TE) material owing to their unique density of state (DOS) near the Fermi level. We investigate the TE performance of Janus $\beta$-PdXY (X/Y=S, Se, Te) monolayer materials as a function of carrier concentration and mid-temperature range (300 to 800 K) by combining density functional theory (DFT) and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. The phonon dispersion spectra and AIMD simulations confirm their thermal and dynamical stability. The transport calculation results reveal the highly anisotropic TE performance for both n and p-type Janus $\beta$-PdXY monolayers. Meanwhile, the coexistence of low phonon group velocity and converged scattering rate leads to lower lattice thermal conductivity (K_l) of 0.80 W/m K, 0.94 W/m K, and 0.77 W/m K along y-direction for these Janus materials. While the high TE power factor is attributed to the high Seebeck coefficient (S) and electrical conductivity, which is due to the degenerate top valance bands of these Janus monolayers. The combination of lower K_l and high-power factor at 300K (800 K) leads to an optimal figure of merit (ZT) as 0.68 (2.21), 0.86 (4.09) and 0.68 (3.63) for p-type Janus PdSSe, PdSeTe and PdSTe monolayers. To capture rational electron transport properties, the effects of acoustic phonon scattering ($\tau$_ac), impurity scattering ($\tau$_imp), and polarized phonon scattering ($\tau$_polar) are included in the temperature-dependent electron relaxation time. These findings indicated that the Janus $\beta$-PdXY monolayers are promising candidates for TE conversion devices.

Abstract:Thermoelectric power generators, as one promising renewable energy resource, have attracted intense attention over the past few decades. However, the large-scale use of thermoelectric convertors relies on cost-effective and eco-friendly thermoelectric materials with decent efficiency. For transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors (TMDCs), a potential thermoelectric material, their thermoelectric efficiency is hampered by their poor intrinsic electrical conductivities. Herein, we demonstrate that the thermoelectric performance of WS2, a typical TMDC material, can be dramatically enhanced by up to 70 times by doping with titanium. The anisotropic thermoelectric properties of these layered WS2 structures were also systematically revealed. The realization of decent thermoelectric efficiency of WS2 by a facile doping strategywill stimulate future explorations of thermoelectric applications for other TMDCs and layered materials.
Penta ‐PdPSe: A New 2D Pentagonal Material with Highly In‐Plane Optical, Electronic, and Optoelectronic Anisotropy

Abstract:Due to their low-symmetry lattice characteristics and intrinsic in-plane anisotropy, 2D pentagonal materials, a new class of 2D materials composed entirely of pentagonal atomic rings, are attracting increasing research attention. However, the existence of these 2D materials has not been proven experimentally until the recent discovery of PdSe2. Herein, penta-PdPSe, a new 2D pentagonal material with a novel low-symmetry puckered pentagonal structure, is introduced to the 2D family. Interestingly, a peculiar polyanion of [SePPSe]4− is discovered in this material, which is the biggest polyanion in 2D materials yet discovered. Strong intrinsic in-plane anisotropic behavior endows penta-PdPSe with highly anisotropic optical, electronic, and optoelectronic properties. Impressively, few-layer penta-PdPSe-based phototransistor not only achieves excellent electronic performances, a moderate electron mobility of 21.37 cm2 V−1 s−1 and a high on/off ratio of up to 108, but it also has a high photoresponsivity of ≈5.07 × 103 A W−1 at 635 nm, which is ascribed to the photogating effect. More importantly, penta-PdPSe also exhibits a large anisotropic conductance (σmax/σmax = 3.85) and responsivity (Rmax/Rmin = 6.17 at 808 nm), superior to most 2D anisotropic materials. These findings make penta-PdPSe an ideal material for the design of next-generation anisotropic devices.

Abstract:Thermoelectric material is a kind of functional material that uses the movement of carriers inside a solid to realize the direct mutual conversion of heat and electric energy. It provides a safe, reliable, pollution-free, noise-free, all-solid-state power generation and cooling method and has a wide range of application prospects. Among them, the characteristics of low valence band degeneracy, low effective quality of conduction band, strong phonon non-harmonicity, simple crystal structure and adjustable microstructure have made PbTe-based materials the focus of research in the thermoelectric field. In this review, two latest strategies to improve the thermoelectric properties of PbTe-based materials are discussed, and the challenges for the further development of PbTe-based thermoelectric materials and the prospects for the future are also outlined.

Flexible thermoelectrics based on ductile semiconductors

Abstract:Flexible thermoelectrics provide a different solution for developing portable and sustainable flexible power supplies. The discovery of silver sulfide–based ductile semiconductors has driven a shift in the potential for flexible thermoelectrics, but the lack of good p-type ductile thermoelectric materials has restricted the reality of fabricating conventional cross-plane π-shaped flexible devices. We report a series of high-performance p-type ductile thermoelectric materials based on the composition-performance phase diagram in AgCu(Se,S,Te) pseudoternary solid solutions, with high figure-of-merit values (0.45 at 300 kelvin and 0.68 at 340 kelvin) compared with other flexible thermoelectric materials. We further demonstrate thin and flexible π-shaped devices with a maximum normalized power density that reaches 30 μW cm −2 K −2 . This output is promising for the use of flexible thermoelectrics in wearable electronics.

Abstract:The quest for efficient thermoelectric materials has intensified with the advent of novel Janus monolayers exhibiting exceptional thermoelectric parameters. In this work, we comprehensively investigate the structural, electronic, transport, phonon, and thermoelectric properties of novel Janus -Pb XY (X=S, Se; Y=Se, Te; X Y) monolayers using density functional theory combined with the Boltzmann transport equation. Our findings unveil the energetic, dynamic, thermal, and mechanical stability of these monolayers, along with their remarkable thermoelectric performance. Remarkably, the p -type -Pb SeTe monolayer exhibits an outstanding figure of merit ( ZT ) of 6.88 at 800 K, attributed to its intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.162 Wm K arising from strong phonon scattering, low group velocity, low phonon relaxation time, and a high Grüneisen parameter. Furthermore, these monolayers demonstrate high Seebeck coefficients and electrical conductivities, making them promising for efficient charge transport and thermoelectric energy conversion. Our results highlight the immense potential of Janus -Pb XY monolayers as promising candidates for high-temperature thermoelectric applications and open up exciting avenues for further exploration of these novel two-dimensional materials in energy-related technologies.

First-Principles Study of Penta-PtXY (X = Se, Te; Y = S, Te; X ≠ Y) Monolayer with Highly Anisotropic Electronic and Optical Properties

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting materials with anisotropic physical properties have induced lively interest due to their application in the field of polarizing devices. Abstract:Pseudo-binary GeSbTe alloys, best known as phase-change materials, are quasi-two-dimensional semiconductors in their stable trigonal phases with high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity, but their thermoelectric properties have not been systematically investigated. Here, in this letter, we prepared polycrystalline Ge2Sb2Te5, GeSb2Te4, and GeSb4Te7 bulk materials and studied the thermoelectric transport properties. Large anisotropy in Seebeck coefficient as well as in electrical conductivity is observed, which is not commonly reported in polycrystalline thermoelectric materials. Combining experimental study and theoretical calculations, one can find that this phenomenon is attributed to the asymmetry of a material's band structure. Maximal zT values of 0.46–0.60 are achieved at 750 K, indicating that GeSbTe-based compounds are promising thermoelectric materials for mid-temperature applications.

Abstract:The amalgamation of multi-subjects often elicits novel materials, new concepts and unexpected applications. Recently, Ge2Sb2Te5, as the most established phase-change material, has been found to exhibit decent thermoelectric performance in its stable, hexagonal phase. The challenge for higher figure of merit (zT) values lies in reducing the hole carrier concentration and enhancing the Seebeck coefficient, which, however, can be hardly realized by conventional doping. Here in this work, we report that the electrical properties of Ge2Sb2Te5 can be readily optimized by anion-site modulation. Specifically, Se/S substitution for Te induces stronger and more ionic bonding, lowering the hole density. Furthermore, an increase in electronic density of state is introduced by Se substitution, contributing to a large increase in Seebeck coefficient. Combined with the reduced thermal conductivity, maximum zT values above 0.7 at 800 K have been achieved in Se/S-alloyed materials, which is ~ 30% higher than that in the pristine Ge2Sb2Te5.
High Performance Thermoelectrics from Earth-Abundant Materials: Enhanced Figure of Merit in PbS by Second Phase Nanostructures.

Abstract:Lead sulfide, a compound consisting of elements with high natural abundance, can be converted into an excellent thermoelectric material. We report extensive doping studies, which show that the power factor maximum for pure n-type PbS can be raised substantially to ~12 μW cm(-1) K(-2) at >723 K using 1.0 mol % PbCl(2) as the electron donor dopant. We also report that the lattice thermal conductivity of PbS can be greatly reduced by adding selected metal sulfide phases. The thermal conductivity at 723 K can be reduced by ~50%, 52%, 30%, and 42% through introduction of up to 5.0 mol % Bi(2)S(3), Sb(2)S(3), SrS, and CaS, respectively. These phases form as nanoscale precipitates in the PbS matrix, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the experimental results show that they cause huge phonon scattering. As a consequence of this nanostructuring, ZT values as high as 0.8 and 0.78 at 723 K can be obtained for nominal bulk PbS material. When processed with spark plasma sintering, PbS samples with 1.0 mol % Bi(2)S(3) dispersion phase and doped with 1.0 mol % PbCl(2) show even lower levels of lattice thermal conductivity and further enhanced ZT values of 1.1 at 923 K. The promising thermoelectric properties promote PbS as a robust alternative to PbTe and other thermoelectric materials.
