Abstract:Mixed Pb–Sn perovskite solar cells are gaining growing research interest, due to the promise of narrow bandgaps and low toxicity. However, theoretical understanding of the device performance and the effect of band alignment in mixed Pb–Sn perovskite solar cells are still in lack. In this contribution, the effect of band offsets of FA0.5MA0.5Pb05Sn05I3 based perovskite solar cells with inverted p-i-n planar structure was analyzed using SCAPS-1D. The variations of conduction band offset (CBO) and valence band offset (VBO) at the absorber/interface defect layer (IDL)/charge transfer layer were simulated through altering the electron affinity (<math>χ</math>) of IDL. It was disclosed that built-in potential across the perovskite absorber and interface recombination were affected by the band offsets. Consequently, the optimum ranges of CBOs at the FA0.5MA0.5Pb0.5Sn0.5I3/IDL interface and the IDL/PCBM interface were set to be 0–0.3 eV and 0.15 ~ −0.15 eV, respectively. Meanwhile, the optimum ranges for VBOs at the FA0.5MA0.5Pb05Sn05I3/IDL interface and the IDL/PEDOT: PSS interface were set to be −0.3 ~ −0.1 eV and 0.1 ~ −0.1 eV, respectively. This study can provide theoretical guidance for the design of mixed Pb–Sn perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on organometallic halide have received wide attention and been developed rapidly in recent years, the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) have reached 22.1%. However, these materials contain lead (Pb), which is toxic. It is of critical importance to find new elements for partially or completely replacing Pb to reduce the Pb contents. Most works carried out focused on CsSnX3 (X=I, Br), FASnX3 (X=I, Br), (FASnI3)1-x(MAPbI3)x (x=0-1), MASnxPb1-xI3 (x=0.25, 0.5), FA0.75Cs0.25Pb0.5Sn0.5I3, etc. We substitute PbI2 with SnI2 in Cs0.05(MA0.17FA0.83)0.95Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3 material for the first time, through changing the ratio of Pb and Sn, which can regulate the size of grains. By optimizing the ratio of PbI2 and SnI2 to achieve the best energy band matching, a power conversion efficiency of 16.10% is achieved by using Cs0.05FA0.79(Pb0.6Sn0.4)0.84I2.5MA0.16Pb0.16Br0.5 as perovskite light absorption layers. With bandgap changing, the hysteresis of the PSCs showed regular variation. Under the optimal bandgap matching, the planar heterojunction PSCs exhibit J-V curves with negligible hysteresis. Abstract:A molecule anchoring strategy is proposed to construct Pb–Sn perovskite film with vertically aligned crystals and optimized interfaces, which produces narrow‐bandgap perovskite solar cells with a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.3% and a record‐high fill factor of 82.14%. Corresponding four‐terminal (4T) all‐perovskite tandem device achieves a PCE of 27.1%. Narrow‐bandgap (NBG) Pb–Sn perovskites are ideal candidates as rear subcell in all‐perovskite tandem solar cells. Because Pb–Sn perovskites contain multiple components, the rational regulation of vertical structure and both interfaces of the film is primarily crucial to achieve high‐performing NBG perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a molecule anchoring strategy is developed to in situ construct Cs0.1MA0.3FA0.6Pb0.5Sn0.5I3 perovskite film with vertically aligned crystals and optimized interfaces. Specifically, l‐alanine methyl ester is developed as an anchoring additive to induce the vertical crystal growth, while PEA2PbI3SCN film is introduced to promote the homogeneous crystallization at the buried interface via SCN− anchoring with cations. Further ethylenediamine dihalides (EDA(I/Cl)2) post‐treatment leads to the gradient energy level alignment on the film surface. Pb–Sn PSCs based on such film show efficient charge transport and extraction, producing a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.3% with an impressive fill factor of 82.14%. Notably, combining with semitransparent 1.78 eV wide‐bandgap PSCs, the four‐terminal all‐perovskite tandem device achieves a PCE of 27.1%. This work opens up a new pathway to boost the performance of Pb–Sn PSCs and their tandem devices.

Abstract:Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) Pb-Sn mixed perovskites show great potential in applications of single and tandem photovoltaic devices, but they suffer from low efficiencies due to the existence of horizontal 2D phases. Here, we obtain a record high efficiency of 18.06% based on 2D ⟨n⟩ = 5 Pb-Sn mixed perovskites (iso-BA2MA4(PbxSn1-x)5I16, x = 0.7), by optimizing the crystal orientation through a regulation of the Pb/Sn ratio. We find that Sn-rich precursors give rise to a mixture of horizontal and vertical 2D phases. Interestingly, increasing the Pb content can not only entirely suppress the unwanted horizontal 2D phase in the film but also enhance the growth of vertical 2D phases, thus significantly improving the device performance and stability. It is suggested that an increase of the Pb content in the Pb-Sn mixed systems facilitates the incorporation of iso-butylammonium (iso-BA+) ligands in vertically oriented perovskites because of the reduced lattice strain and increased interaction between the organic ligands and inorganic framework. Our work sheds light on the optimal conditions for fabricating stable and efficient 2D Pb-Sn mixed perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Sn-Pb mixed perovskites with bandgaps in the range of 1.1-1.4 eV are ideal candidates for single-junction solar cells to approach the Shockley-Queisser limit. However, the efficiency and stability of Sn-Pb mixed-perovskite solar cells (PSCs) still lag far behind those of Pb-based counterparts due to the easy oxidation of Sn2+ . Here, a reducing agent 4-hydrazinobenzoic acid is introduced as an additive along with SnF2 to suppress the oxidation of Sn2+ . Meanwhile, a vertical Pb/Sn compositional gradient is formed spontaneously after an antisolvent treatment due to different solubility and crystallization kinetics of Sn- and Pb-based perovskites and it can be finely tuned by controlling the antisolvent temperature. Because the band structure of a perovskite is dependent on its composition, graded vertical heterojunctions are constructed in the perovskite films with a compositional gradient, which can enhance photocarrier separation and suppress carrier recombination in the resultant PSCs. Under optimal fabrication conditions, the Sn-Pb mixed PSCs show power conversion efficiency up to 22% along with excellent stability during light soaking.

Abstract:Tin-lead mixed perovskites (TLPs) with a tunable and ideal bandgap exhibit great potential in approaching the Shockley-Queisser limit of power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, two critical issues are necessary to be addressed, including the oxidation of Sn2+ and negligible composition and phase segregation. The latter derives from the unbalanced crystallization rate between Sn- and Pb-based perovskites. Here, we report a strategy to address the above critical issues by introducing 3,4-Dihydroxybenzylamine hydrobromide (DHBABr) in the TLP precursor solution. DHBABr was revealed to promote the crystallization of FAPbI(3) perovskite by suppressing the formation of crystalline DMSO-FA-Pb-I intermediates and retard the crystallization rate of FASnI(3) by preferentially forming a steady amorphous DHBA-FA-Sn-I intermediate. This, therefore, balances the crystallization rate between Sn- and Pb-based perovskites. As a result, the spatial distribution of Sn/Pb ratio is much more uniform across the whole TLP film, which benefits the upscaling of the manufacturing process. Relying on this doping strategy accompanied by the surface passivation with DHBABr, which reduces the defect density of TLP, inhibits the oxidation of Sn2+, and optimizes the band alignment of the device, we have achieved a PCE of 22.44 % with V-oc of 0.853 V and FF of 80.0 %, along with an enhanced long-term stability of T-80 = 476 h under continuously light illumination in the champion device.
Realizing High Efficiency over 20% of Low‐Bandgap Pb–Sn‐Alloyed Perovskite Solar Cells by in Situ Reduction of Sn4+

Abstract:Although the theoretical power conversion efficiency (PCE) of low‐bandgap Pb–Sn‐alloyed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is higher than that of its conventional pure Pb counterpart, its device performance currently has been severely restricted by the large open‐circuit voltage (Voc) loss. Herein, it is discovered that the Sn4+‐induced trap states of the perovskite film can be effectively suppressed by introducing excess Sn powder into the precursor solution (FASnI3) to reduce the Sn4+ content. As a result, the average charge carrier lifetime of the perovskite film increases remarkably from 115 to 701 ns due to the suppressed nonradiative recombination, and the energy levels have up‐shifted by about 0.27 eV, rendering a more favorable energy‐level alignment at the interface. Ultimately, the champion PSCs using a low‐bandgap (FASnI3)0.6(MAPbI3)0.4 perovskite film with Sn4+ reduction show a high Voc of 0.843 V corresponding to a Voc loss as low as 0.397 eV and a high fill factor of 80.34%, leading to an impressive PCE of 20.7%, which is one of the few instances of a PCE over 20% for low‐bandgap mixed Pb–Sn PSCs to date.
Inorganic Lead-Free B-γ-CsSnI 3 Perovskite Solar Cells Using Diverse Electron-Transporting Materials: A Simulation Study

Abstract:B-γ-CsSnI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are simulated employing diverse electron-transporting layers (ETLs, including TiO2, ZnO, SnO2, GaN, C60, and PCBM), and a comparative study has been made. Both regular and inverted planar structures are simulated. Effects of the thickness of absorbers and ETLs, doping of ETLs, and interface trap states on the photovoltaic performance are studied to optimize the device structures. The regular structures have larger short-circuit current density (J sc) than the inverted structures, but the inverted structures have larger fill factor (FF). All of the simulated optimal PSCs have similar open-circuit voltages (V oc) of ∼0.96 V. The PSCs with TiO2 ETLs have the best photovoltaic performance, and the optimum structure exhibits the highest efficiency of 20.2% with a V oc of 0.97 V, J sc of 29.67 mA/cm2, and FF of 0.70. The optimal PSCs with ZnO, GaN, C60, and PCBM ETLs exhibit efficiencies of 17.88, 18.09, 16.71, and 16.59%, respectively. The optimal PSC with SnO2 ETL exhibits the lowest efficiency of 15.5% in all of the simulated PSCs due to its cliff-like band offset at the SnO2/CsSnI3 interface. Furthermore, the increase of interface trap density and capture cross section is found to reduce the photovoltaic performance of PSCs. This work contributes to designing and fabricating CsSnI3 PSCs.

Abstract:The binary tin and lead (Sn-Pb) perovskites are a significant cornerstone for all-perovskite tandem devices due to their high efficiency, low toxicity, and narrow bandgap properties. However, the fast crystallization of the perovskite film and the facile conversion of Sn 2+ to Sn 4+ during the preparation process are major obstacles to achieving remarkable Sn-Pb perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we develop a multifunctional anion-cation modulation strategy to synthesize high-quality FAPb 0.5 Sn 0.5 I 3 ( E g ~1.24 eV) perovskite films by mixing methylamine acetate (MAAc) ionic liquid with the PbI 2 and SnI 2 solutions through a two-step sequential deposition process. MA cations tend to insert the tin/lead-halogen octahedral framework and occupy the A-site in the first-step. Subsequently, the volatile MA cations can produce ion exchange reactions with FA + from the formamidinium iodide in the second step, leading to high quality crystallization process. Additionally, the Ac anions can efficiently suppress Sn 2+ oxidation with balancing the crystallization rate of the Pb/Sn components, and passivate the defect sites located on the grain boundary and surface, owing to the strong coordination of Ac - with Sn 2+ and Pb 2+ . As a result, the optimized PSC reaches a power-conversion efficiency of 21.22%, which is the highest value reported for FAPb 0.5 Sn 0.5 I 3 based solar cells with a two-step method, compared to the control device with 12.86%. Moreover, the perovskite devices show prominent reproducibility and stability performance, maintaining >80% of the initial efficiency after being stored in the N 2 -filled glovebox for 1000 h.

Abstract:A synergistic bulk passivation and interface modification strategy is developed for the fabrication of high‐quality tin–lead mixed perovskite films (1.27 eV) and efficient solar devices by blade‐coating. Owing to the significantly suppressed nonradiative charge recombination, the prepared solar cells give a high efficiency of 19.06% with an impressive open‐circuit voltage of 0.837 V. Thin films of tin–lead alloyed perovskites are drawing growing attention, mainly owing to their tunable bandgaps in delivering efficient single‐ and multi‐junction photovoltaic devices. The rapid efficiency advancement of Sn–Pb perovskite devices has been dependent primarily on improving the crystal quality of perovskite films via retarding oxidation of Sn2+. Herein, it is demonstrated that in addition to obtaining high‐quality Sn–Pb perovskite thin films, reducing nonradiative recombination losses at interfaces is equally important for realizing efficient solar cells. An aromatic amine is first introduced to passivate the grain boundary in printed Sn–Pb perovskite films, which boosts the open‐circuit voltage (V OC) of the solar devices from 700 to 766 mV. Further enhancement of the V OC to 814 mV and finally to 837 mV is realized by forming a 2D/3D‐layered heterojunction and doping the hole extraction layer with a polyelectrolyte, respectively, benefiting from the largely suppressed nonradiative recombination losses at interfaces. Eventually, the mixed Sn–Pb perovskite devices with a bandgap of ≈1.27 eV yield a high efficiency of 19.06% and in parallel show improved shelf and light‐soaking stability.

Abstract:The measured energy diagram for inverted cell architectures for perovskite photovoltaic devices is presented. Band offsets are determined in direct and inverse photoemission spectroscopy. The perovskite films assume a slightly p‐type characteristic on top of NiO and show good energetic alignment to adjacent organic electron transport layers. The finding explains the function of inverted devices and gives guidelines for optimization.

Abstract:Lead-tin (Pb-Sn) mixed-halide perovskites show potential for single-junction and tandem solar cells due to their adjustable band gaps, flexible composition, and superior environmental stability compared to three-dimensional (3D) perovskites. However, they have lower power conversion efficiencies. Understanding band alignment and charge carrier dynamics is essential for enhancing photovoltaic performance. In this view, herein we have prepared thin films of mixed Pb-Sn-based two dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites BA2FA(Pb1-xSnx)2I7 using a solution-based method. XRD study revealed the formation of orthorhombic phases for pristine (BA2FAPb2I7) and mixed Pb-Sn perovskite thin films. UV-vis analysis showed that different n = 2 and n = 3 phases are present in the pristine sample. In contrast, Pb-Sn-doped samples showed no signature of other phases with a prominent red-shift in the visible spectral region. Cyclic voltammetry showed peaks for electron transfers at the band edges. Additionally, electrochemical and optical band gap matching was observed, along with decreased peak intensity due to less reactant and altered electrolyte-perovskite interface stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the reduced band gap is due to the alteration of electrostatic interactions and charge distribution within the lattice upon Sn substitution. Low-temperature PL analysis provided insights into charge carrier dynamics with Sn substitution and suggested the suppression of higher n phases and self-trapped excitons/carriers in mixed Pb-Sn quasi-2D RP perovskite thin films. This study sheds light on the electron transfer phenomena between TiO2 and SnO2 layers by estimating band offsets from valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM), which is crucial for future applications in fabricating stable and efficient 2D-Pb-Sn mixed perovskites for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Mixed lead-tin perovskite solar cells (LTPSCs) with an ideal bandgap are demonstrated as a promising candidate to reach higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) than their Pb-counterparts. Herein, a Br-free mixed lead-tin perovskite material, FA0.8 MA0.2 Pb0.8 Sn0.2 I3 , with a bandgap of 1.33 eV, as a perovskite absorber, is selected. Through density functional theory calculations and optoelectronic techniques, it is demonstrated that both Pb- and Sn-related A-site vacancies are pushed into deeper energetic depth, causing severe nonradiative recombination. Hence, a selective targeting anchor strategy that employs phenethylammonium iodide and ethylenediamine diiodide as co-modifiers to selectively anchor with Pb- and Sn-related active sites and passivate bimetallic traps, respectively, is established. Furthermore, the selectivity of the molecular oriented anchor passivation is demonstrated through energetic depth specificity of Pb- and Sn-related traps. As a result, a substantially enhanced open-circuit voltage (VOC ) from 0.79 to 0.90 V for the LTPSCs is achieved, yielding a champion PCE of 22.51%, which is the highest PCE among the reported ideal-bandgap PSCs. The VOC loss is reduced to 0.43 V.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of low-bandgap mixed Pb–Sn perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been significantly hindered by large open-circuit voltage (Voc) loss and poor fill factor (FF). Herein, mixed Pb–Sn perovskite films with a composition (FASnI3)0.6(MAPbI3)0.4 were processed with a simple delayed annealing (DA) treatment that enables perovskite films with significantly reduced surface roughness. The treatment reduces nonradiative recombination of interfacial contacts when the perovskite films are interfaced with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiphene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and fullerene (C60). Charge transfer at the carrier-collection interfaces has been effectively improved, in agreement with time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and transient photovoltage/photocurrent results. Consequently, the champion cell based on perovskite films with DA treatment shows a high Voc of 0.824 V, indicating a greatly suppressed Voc loss (for a bandgap of ∼1.25 eV), and an overall PCE of over 18.6%.

Abstract:Ternary‐metal Sn‐Pb‐Zn perovskite exhibits reconstructed surface to balance the Sn/Pb distribution, tuning the interface energy and inducing strong ionic bonding by the surface‐rich Zn. The novel alloy method promotes the interface charge transfer, achieving efficient and stable solar cells. Though Sn‐Pb alloyed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) achieved great progress, there is a dilemma to further increase Sn for less‐Pb requirement. High Sn ratio (>70%) perovskite exhibits nonstoichiometric Sn:Pb:I at film surface to aggravate Sn2+ oxidation and interface energy mismatch. Here, ternary metal alloyed (FASnI3)0.7(MAPb1−xZnxI3)0.3 (x = 0–3%) is constructed for Pb% < 30% perovskite. Zn with smaller ionic size and stronger ionic interaction than Sn/Pb assists forming high‐quality perovskite film with ZnI64− enriched at surface to balance Sn:Pb:I ratio. Differing from uniform bulk doping, surface‐rich Zn with lower lying orbits pushes down the energy band of perovskite and adjusts the interface energy for efficient charge transfer. The alloyed PSC realizes efficiency of 19.4% at AM1.5 (one of the highest values reported for Pb% < 30% PSCs). Moreover, stronger bonding of Zn─I and Sn─I contributes to better durability of ternary perovskite than binary perovskite. This work highlights a novel alloy method for efficient and stable less‐Pb PSCs.

Abstract:Organic‐inorganic metal‐halide perovskites have received great attention for photovoltaic (PV) applications owing to their superior optoelectronic properties and the unprecedented performance development. For single‐junction PV devices, although lead (Pb)‐based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved 26.1% efficiency, the mixed tin‐lead (Sn‐Pb) perovskites offer more ideal bandgap tuning capability to enable an even higher performance. The Sn‐Pb perovskite (with a bandgap tuned to approximately 1.2 eV) is also attractive as the bottom subcell for a tandem configuration to further surpass the Shockley–Queisser radiative limit for the single‐junction devices. The performance of the all‐perovskite tandem solar cells has gained rapid development and achieved a certified efficiency up to 29.1%. In this article, we review the properties and recent development of state‐of‐the‐art mixed Sn‐Pb perovskites and their application in single‐junction and all‐perovskite tandem solar cells. We highlight recent advances in various approaches covering additives, solvents, interfaces, and perovskite growth. We also provide our perspective and outlook on the challenges and strategies for further development of mixed Sn‐Pb perovskites in both efficiency and stability for PV applications. Abstract:Inhomogeneous Pb/Sn elemental distribution and the resulted phase segregation in mixed Pb-Sn halide perovskites would result in energy disorder (band structure and phase distribution disorder), which greatly limits their photovoltaic performance. Here, PbS quantum dot has been synthesized and demonstrated as seeds for modulation crystallization dynamics of the mixed Pb-Sn inorganic perovskites, allowing an enhanced film quality and significantly suppressing phase segregation. With this additive power conversion efficiency of 8% and 6% is obtained under irradiation of full sunlight in planar and mesoporous structured solar cells in combination with CsPb0.5Sn0.5I2Br inorganic perovskite, respectively. Our finding reveals exploring the actual Pb/Sn atoms location in perovskite structure and its influence on developing efficient and stable low-bandgap perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:All-perovskite tandem solar cells promise higher power-conversion efficiency (PCE) than single-junction perovskite solar cells while maintaining a low fabrication cost 1–3 . However, their performance is still largely constrained by the subpar performance of mixed Pb-Sn narrow-bandgap perovskite subcells, mainly due to a high trap density on the perovskite film surface 4–6 . Although heterojunctions with intermixed 2D/3D perovskites could reduce surface recombination, this common strategy induces transport losses and thereby limits device fill factors 7–9 . Here we develop an immiscible 3D/3D bilayer perovskite heterojunction with type-II band structure at the Pb-Sn perovskite/electron-transport layer interface to suppress the interfacial non-radiative recombination and facilitate charge extraction. The bilayer perovskite heterojunction is formed by depositing a layer of lead-halide wide-bandgap perovskite on top of the mixed Pb-Sn narrow-bandgap perovskite via a hybrid evaporation/solution processing method. This heterostructure allows us to increase the PCE of Pb-Sn perovskite solar cells having a 1.2-μm-thick absorber to 23.8%, together with a high open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 0.873 V and a high fill factor of 82.6%. We thereby demonstrate a record-high PCE of 28.5% (certified 28.0%) in all-perovskite tandem solar cell. The encapsulated tandem devices retain over 90% of their initial performance after 600 hours of continuous operation under simulated one-sun illumination.
