Abstract:Nonlinear polarization evolution-based passively mode-locked fiber lasers with ultrafast and high peak power pulses are a powerful tool for engineering applications and scientific research. However, their sensitivity to polarization limits their widespread application. To address this, automatic mode-locking immune to environmental disturbances is gaining attention. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the first intelligent programmable mode-locked fiber laser enabled by our proposed human-like algorithm, combining the human approach with machine speed, computing capability, and precision. The laser is capable of automatically locking onto multiple operation regimes, such as fundamental mode-locking, harmonic mode-locking, Q -switching, and even Q -switched mode-locking without physically altering its structure. The shortest initial mode-locking time and recovery time from detachment are only 0.22 s and 14.8 ms, respectively, which are the record values to date. We believe this intelligent laser with superior performance can find practical applications in engineering and provide infinite possibilities for scientific research. © 2019 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:The nonlinear polarization evolution-based passively mode-locked fiber laser is attracting increasing attention that can be attributed to its variety of operating regimes. However, the precise polarization tuning required to achieve these different regimes and the extreme vulnerability of these lasers to environmental disturbances have substantially hindered their widespread applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the first genetic algorithm-based real-time automatic mode-locked fiber laser, in which the fitness functions for the different regimes are based on temporal information only and where a modified genetic algorithm is proposed to accelerate the mode-locking time. The laser demonstrates an outstanding time-consumption performance, particularly when searching the second-order harmonic mode-locking regime and the Q-switching regime.

Abstract:To apply the real-time automatic mode-locking technique to mode-locked lasers with high repetition rates, we propose a pre-stretch technique, where a slice of dispersion is used to stretch the output pulses thereby reducing the required sampling rate and the bandwidth of the acquisition system. To illustrate, we demonstrate a real-time automatic mode-locked fibre laser with a repetition rate of 48 MHz, where a real-time feedback circuit with a 400-MSa/s analog-to-digital converter is used as the hardware backend. Given a fixed acquisition system, the correlation between the repetition rate and the optimum amount of dispersion is well discussed through comparing the countable threshold range for mode-locking discrimination. Furthermore, a conclusion based on experiments is drawn that, to apply automatic mode-locking technique, the minimum acquisition bandwidth should be above twice of the fundamental repetition rate, and the minimum sampling rate follows the Nyquist’s law, which is four times of the fundamental repetition rate.
Intelligent mode-locked NPR fiber laser based on laser speckle characteristics

Abstract:Passively mode-locked fiber lasers based on nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) have been widely used due to their ability to produce short pulses with high peak power and broad spectrum. Nevertheless, environmental disturbances can disrupt the mode-locked state, making it a challenge for practical implementation. Therefore, scientists have proposed mode-locked NPR lasers assisted with artificial intelligence, which can effectively address the issues related to mode-locking stability. Speckle patterns containing spectral information can be generated when the laser transmitting through a scattering medium, which can be served as indicators of the mode-locked state. The contrast of the Tamura texture feature of the speckle patterns exhibits periodic "V" shaped variations with respect to the rotation angles of the waveplates, according to experimental results. The stable mode-locking region is confined to the area close to the minimum contrast. Based on these characteristics, an intelligent approach employing a modified gradient algorithm to identify the region of minimum speckle contrast for achieving mode-locked state. The average number of iterations needed to achieve initial mode-locking and recover mode-locking are about 20 and 10, respectively. Once the mode-locking is achieved, the neural network can be employed to distinguish single-pulse or multi-pulses outputs based on the speckle pattern, thereby enabling intelligent stable mode-locked single-pulse genration from the NPR fiber laser.

Abstract:Mode-locked fiber lasers based on nonlinear polarization evolution can generate femtosecond pulses with different pulse widths and rich spectral distributions for versatile applications through polarization tuning. However, a precise and repeatable location of a specific pulsation regime is extremely challenging. Here, by using fast spectral analysis based on a time-stretched dispersion Fourier transform as the spectral discrimination criterion, along with an intelligent polarization search algorithm, for the first time, we achieved real-time control of the spectral width and shape of mode-locked femtosecond pulses; the spectral width can be tuned from 10 to 40 nm with a resolution of ~1.47 nm, and the spectral shape can be programmed to be hyperbolic secant or triangular. Furthermore, we reveal the complex, repeatable transition dynamics of the spectrum broadening of femtosecond pulses, including five middle phases, which provides deep insight into ultrashort pulse formation that cannot be observed with traditional mode-locked lasers.
An Automatic Mode-Locked System for Passively Mode-Locked Fiber Laser

Abstract:This paper designs and implements one kind of automatic mode-locked system. It can adjust a passively mode-locked fiber laser to keep steady mode-locked states automatically. So the unsteadiness of traditional passively mode-locked fiber laser can be avoided. The system transforms optical signals into electrical pulse signals and sends them into MCU after processing. MCU calculates the frequency of the signals and judges the state of the output based on a quick judgment algorithm. A high-speed comparator is used to check the signals and the comparison voltage can be adjusted to improve the measuring accuracy. Then by controlling two polarization controllers at an angle of 45degrees to each other, MCU extrudes the optical fibers to change the polarization until it gets proper mode-locked output. So the system can continuously monitor the output signal and get it back to mode-locked states quickly and automatically. States of the system can be displayed on the LCD and PC. The parameters of the steady mode-locked states can be stored into an EEPROM so that the system will get into mode-locked states immediately next time. Actual experiments showed that, for a 6.238MHz passively mode-locked fiber lasers, the system can get into steady mode-locked states automatically in less than 90s after starting the system. The expected lock time can be reduced to less than 20s after follow up improvements.

Abstract:To improve the environmental stability and self-starting ability, researchers have developed the nonlinear optical-loop mirror and nonlinear amplifying-loop mirror (NALM) mode-locking technologies. The developing process of these technologies can be summarized as the following three phases: non-polarization-maintaining (PM) structures with polarization controllers, PM figure-of-8 cavity structures with dual-gain, and PM figure-of-9 cavity structures with a phase shifter. Among these, the newly invented figure-of-9 NALM mode-locked fiber laser is particularly advantageous owing to its easy self-starting ability, long-term stability, concise structure, and cost-effectiveness. Such a mode-locked fiber laser is increasingly employed in applications such as optical frequency combs, generation of THz radiation, and advanced material micromachining.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed growing research interest in dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber lasers for their pivotal role in diverse applications and the exploration of nonlinear dynamics. Despite notable progress in their development, achieving reliable mode-locked dual-wavelength operation typically necessitates intricate manual adjustments of the cavity's polarization components. In this article, we present the realization of automatic mode-locking in a dual-wavelength soliton fiber laser. To provide guidance for the algorithm design, we systematically investigated the impact of polarization configurations and initial states on the laser's operation through numerical simulations and linear scan experiments. The results indicate that operational regimes can be finely adjusted around the wave plate position supporting the mode-locked dual-wavelength solution. Furthermore, the laser exhibits multiple stable states at the mode-locked dual-wavelength point, with critical dependence on the initial conditions. Accordingly, we developed a two-stage genetic algorithm that was demonstrated to be effective for realizing automatic dual-wavelength mode-locking. To further improve the performance of the algorithm, a feedforward neural network was trained and integrated into the algorithm, enabling accurate identification of the dual-wavelength states. This study provides valuable insights into understanding how polarization configurations and initial conditions impact the operational regimes of dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber lasers. The algorithm developed can be extended to optimize other systems with multiple stable states supported at the same parameter point.

Abstract:Abstract Mode-locked fiber lasers can generate short pulses with a high repetition rate. It can be used in nonlinear optical imaging, photo-communication and other fields. Obtaining narrow pulses with high repetition frequency has become a hot research topic. In this article, we demonstrate a hybrid mode-locked fiber laser, which is a regeneratively mode-locked erbium fiber laser operating at 10 GHz, incorporating a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror to generate a 1.9 ps pulse sequence. This all-fiber laser with a high-repetition-rate and short pulses has the advantages of high stability and self-starting, which has a wide range of applications.

Abstract:This Letter proposes a novel, to the best of our knowledge, transistor-like optical fiber modulator composed of graphene oxide (GO) and polystyrene (PS) microspheres. Unlike previously proposed schemes based on waveguides or cavity enhancement, the proposed method can directly enhance the photoelectric interaction with the PS microspheres to form a light local field. The designed modulator exhibits a distinct optical transmission change (62.8%), with a power consumption of <10 nW. Such low power consumption enables electrically controllable fiber lasers to be switched in various operational regimes, including continuous wave (CW), Q switched mode-locked (QML), and mode-locked (ML). With this all-fiber modulator, the pulse width of the mode-locked signal can be compressed to 12.9 ps, and the corresponding repetition rate is 21.4 MHz.

Abstract:As passively mode-locked fiber lasers based on Nonlinear Polarization Rotation(NPR)have the problem of low stability and difficulty to self-start into a mode-locking state during operation,an online automatic mode-lock circuit was designed to adjust the laser in real time to get a stable modelocked output.In the design,the signal from NPR passively mode-locked laser was transformed to an electrical pulse signal with a high speed photoelectric detector,and it was amplified and shaped linearly to be received by the Micro Computer Unit(MCU)to count.Then the MCU distinguished the state of the laser based on quick mode-lock judge algorithm and adjusted the electric controlled polarization controller(PC)on the fiber laser automatically.The experiment results show that for the NPR modelocked fiber laser with a repetition rate of 6.238MHz,the automatic mode-lock circuit can distinguish the losing lock in 6ms,and can find and get into the mode-lock state in 10.24sautomatically.ForNPR passive mode-locked fiber lasers with repetition rate lower than 16 MHz,this automatic modelock circuit can get into a stable mode-locked state quickly or restart immediately if the mode-lock state is lost for some reasons,which reaches the design requirements and shows advantages of simple structures,low costs,low powers,and high reliability.

Abstract:Additive pulsed-mode mode-locked fiber lasers are known for their wide range of operating states, which can be achieved by tuning the artificial saturable absorber with built-in polarization controllers. We have equipped our laser with three motorized polarization controllers and online monitoring. We recorded three dimensional high-resolution maps of the oscillation states by stepping trough all possible polarization controller settings. In addition, we demonstrate the single and multi-objective optimization by a genetic algorithm of the fiber laser towards a desired operating state. To the best of our knowledge this is the first demonstration of multi-objective optimization of a fiber laser. Doing so, we can selectively operate the cavity in pulsed and continuous-wave mode and tune the wavelength of the laser emission by more than 55 nm. The high wavelength tunability is possible because the polarization controllers and the inline-polarizer act as a tunable birefringent filter.
Robust mode-locking in a hybrid ultrafast laser based on nonlinear multimodal interference

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the realization of a half-polarization-maintaining (half-PM) fiber laser, in which mode-locking is provided by a reflective multimode-interference saturable absorber (SA). In the specially designed SA, linearly polarized light is coupled into a 15-cm-long graded-index multimode fiber (GIMF) through the PM fiber, and then reflected back to the PM structure through a mirror pigtailed with a single-mode fiber (SMF). The modulation depth and saturation peak power are measured to be 1.5 % and 0.6 W, respectively. The proposed SA device is incorporated into a novel half-PM erbium-doped fiber oscillator, which generates soliton pulses with 409 fs temporal duration at a 33.3 MHz repetition rate. The proposed fiber laser is compared to a conventional non-PM fiber laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) in terms of essential optical properties such as the spectral bandwidth, pulse duration, and stability performance. Short- and long-time stability tests and superior noise performance corroborate robust mode-locking in this setup.

Abstract:Mode-locking in laser cavities has attracted great interest due to its wide range of applications in generating optical frequency combs and ultra-short pulse trains. Here, a mode-locked fiber laser with a distributed selectable wavelength feedback is proposed based on radio frequency maneuverability. The laser is capable of generating transform-limited pulses with a selectable wavelength and repetition rates by interrogating different reflectors through active modulation. Intriguing laser pulses were realized, which can have >930 times width compression ratio compared with the modulation signal and can be selectively locked to reflectors separated in centimeter scale.

Abstract:Abstract Ever since the mid-1960’s, locking the phases of modes enabled the generation of laser pulses of duration limited only by the uncertainty principle, opening the field of ultrafast science. In contrast to conventional lasers, mode spacing in random lasers is ill-defined because optical feedback comes from scattering centres at random positions, making it hard to use mode locking in transform limited pulse generation. Here the generation of sub-nanosecond transform-limited pulses from a mode-locked random fibre laser is reported. Rayleigh backscattering from decimetre-long sections of telecom fibre serves as laser feedback, providing narrow spectral selectivity to the Fourier limit. The laser is adjustable in pulse duration (0.34–20 ns), repetition rate (0.714–1.22 MHz) and can be temperature tuned. The high spectral-efficiency pulses are applied in distributed temperature sensing with 9.0 cm and 3.3 × 10 −3 K resolution, exemplifying how the results can drive advances in the fields of spectroscopy, telecommunications, and sensing.

Abstract:Fiber mode-locked lasers are nonlinear optical systems that provide ultrashort pulses at high repetition rates. However, adjusting the cavity parameters is often a challenging task due to the intrinsic multistability of a laser system. Depending on the adjustment of the cavity parameters, the optical output may vary significantly, including Q-switching, single and multipulse, and harmonic mode-locked regimes. In this study, we demonstrate an experimental implementation of the Soft Actor–Critic algorithm for generating a harmonic mode-locked regime inside a state-of-the-art fiber laser with an ion-gated nanotube saturable absorber. The algorithm employs nontrivial strategies to achieve a guaranteed harmonic mode-locked regime with the highest order by effectively managing the pumping power of a laser system and the nonlinear transmission of a nanotube absorber. Our results demonstrate a robust and feasible machine-learning–based approach toward an automatic system for adjusting nonlinear optical systems with the presence of multistability phenomena.
