Abstract:Few-mode-fiber (FMF) based mode division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technique to further increase the transmission capacity of single mode fibers. We propose and numerically investigate a fiber-optical mode converter (MC) using long period gratings (LPGs) fabricated on the FMF by point-by-point CO2 laser inscription technique. In order to precisely excite three modes (LP01, LP11, and LP02), both untilted LPG and tilted LPG are comprehensively optimized through the length, index modulation depth, and tilt angle of the LPG in order to achieve a mode contrast ratio (MCR) of more than 20dB with less wavelength dependence. It is found that the proposed MCs have obvious advantages of high MCR, low mode crosstalk, easy fabrication and maintenance, and compact size.

Abstract:We demonstrate the first few-mode semiconductor optical amplifier (FM SOA) that supports up to four waveguide modes. We show that each of the modes are confined to the waveguide, overlapping the quantum wells with approximately the same amount, leading to equalized gain for each of the four waveguide modes.

Abstract:In this paper, a semiconductor laser system consisting of a conventional multimode Fabry-Perot laser diode with a built-in external cavity is presented and demonstrated. More than two resonance modes, whose peak levels are significantly higher than other residual modes, are simultaneously supported and output by adjusting the bias current and operating temperature of the active region. Based on this device, dual-pumped nondegenerate four-wave mixing-in which two pump waves and a single signal wave are simultaneously fed into the laser, and the injection power and wavelength of the injected pump and signal waves are changed-is observed and discussed thoroughly. The results show that while the wavelengths of pump wave A and signal wave S are kept constant, the other pump wave B jumps from about 1535 nm to 1578 nm, generating conversion signals with changed wavelengths. The achieved conversion bandwidth between the primary signal and the converted signal waves is broadly tunable in the range of several terahertz frequencies. Both the conversion efficiency and optical signal-to-noise ratio of the newly generated conversion signals are adopted to evaluate the performance of the proposed four-wave mixing process, and are strongly dependent on the wavelength and power of the injected waves. Here, the attained maximum conversion efficiency and optical signal-to-noise ratio are close to -22 dB and 15 dB, respectively.

Abstract:An optical parametric amplifier based on intermodal four-wave mixing in few-mode fibers is proposed. The results show that tunable amplification bandwidth from 1GHz to 60GHz can be realized by changing the wavelength of the pumps.

Abstract:We report the first demonstration of a four-mode semiconductor optical amplifier (FM-SOA), with strategically positioned quantum-well layers to provide modal-gain control with uniform electrical pumping. On-off gain of 11 dB was demonstrated for all four modes (E-11, E-12, E-21 and E-22). The difference in on-off gain among all four modes is less than 1 dB in the range of 2-11 dB without any deliberately pumping profile control. Particular challenges with FM-SOA that must be overcome in comparison with traditional single mode SOA are discussed.

Abstract:We present an ultrahigh gain, narrow bandwidth, and low noise optical amplifier via the radiation pressure induced by the four-wave mixing (FWM) effect based on a cavity optomechanical system in the unresolved sideband regime. It offers a favorable platform to amplify a weak signal field and simultaneously generate a conjugate field with tunable gain and bandwidth. We achieve an ultranarrow bandwidth (9 Hz) and ultrahigh gain (40 dB) optical field amplification at a weak pump power (10 mu W). Due to the unresolved sideband regime, the system supports simultaneous multimode amplification. The presented optomechanical FWM mechanism-based amplifier can provide standard quantum-noise-limit amplification, in principle, and is applicable to a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum ranging from the microwave band to the ultraviolet band.

Abstract:Diffused quantum wells (DFQW) optical devices have been widely investigated for use in optical electronics integrated circuits. In this paper, we report on the performance of five-period (200 Angstrom In0.53Ga0.47As0.57P0.43 barrier and 60 Angstrom In0.53Ga0.47As well) DFQW optical amplifiers and modulators. The results show that the QW amplifiers and modulators maintain at single guiding mode operation after the QW structure has been annealed. The tuning range of the operational wavelength of QW optical amplifiers is 34meV without a significant degradation in the modal gain peak by interdiffusing the QWs. The QW interdiffusion was accomplished by P+ ion implantation to the upper region of the top cladding layer of the multilayer structure and followed by rapid thermal annealing such that the implanted ions did not damage the QW structures. The I-V characteristics of the implanted QW are similar to that of the unimplanted. Concerning the TE electro-absorptive modulation, a large contrast ratio (CR) of 35dB can be obtained at lambda (op) = 1.55 mum under a small bias of -1.5V for a 500 mum long modulator. For TM mode, a slightly higher CR of 37dB can be obtained at the operation wavelength although the reverse bias voltage is double.

Abstract:Few-mode semiconductor optical amplifiers (FM SOAs) allow more than one transverse modes to propagate inside of the waveguide region. They are useful in optical signal processing of distinct spatial mode signals when applied to spatial division multiplexing in an optical fiber communication. A model for FM SOAs including carrier rate and coupled-mode equations, which govern linear and nonlinear effects, is derived for the first time. The model reveals two distinctions of parametric process in FM SOAs through carrier gratings. First, the carrier gratings with transverse variation patterns provide unique mode selectivity, which only allows efficient interaction between certain modes. This mode selectivity is summarized as a parallelogram rule, a simple method to find the interacting modes and categorize them. Second, degenerate four wave mixing (FWM) via static carrier grating diffraction distinguishes itself from other types of FWMs for the highest wave interaction efficiency. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation show that optical signal processing based on the degenerate FWM features high power efficiency, broadband operation, phase sensitivity, and mode selectivity. The processing can be done either in the spatial mode domain or in the frequency domain, or by combing them together. These features bestowed by the introduction of spatial degree of freedom, make FM SOAs promising in optical signal processing.
Efficiency-boosted semiconductor optical amplifiers via mode-division multiplexing

Abstract:Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) are a fundamental building block for many photonic systems. However, their power inefficiency has been setting back operational cost reduction, and the resulting thermal losses constrain miniaturization, and the realization of more complex photonic functions such as large-scale switches and optical phased arrays. In this work, we demonstrate significant gain and efficiency enhancement using an extra degree of freedom of light - the mode space. This is done without changing the SOA's material design, and therefore high versatility and compatibility can be obtained. Light is multiplexed in different guided modes and is reinjected into the same gain section twice without introducing resonance, doubling the interaction length in a broadband manner. Up to 87% higher gain and 300% higher wall-plug efficiency are obtained in a double-pass SOA compared to a conventional single-pass SOA, at the same operating current, in the wavelength range of 1560 - 1580 nm.

Abstract:Theoretical and experimental studies of phase-modulation effects in degenerate four-wave mixing are presented in this paper. Our experiments and analysis show that phase-modulation effects change the phase-matching condition and lead to a decrease in signal output and a degradation in conjugation fidelity.

Abstract:A novel method of optical generation millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signals employing two cascaded optical modulators and four-wave-mixing effect in semiconductor optical amplifiers is proposed. This approach is capable of generating signals of four times, eight times, and 12 times microwave source frequency with high spectral purity and stability. A mm-wave of 42 GHz (12 x fundamental) with a 3-dB linewidth less than 30 Hz and a phase noise less than - 83 dBc/Hz at 10-kHz offset is obtained.

Abstract:Using a semiconductor-fiber ring laser, a novel method for the all-optical wavelength conversion based on dual-pump four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is demonstrated. For the input signal with different wavelengths, only one external pump is needed. This scheme can simplify the dual-pump FWM in SOA and has nearly constant conversion efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over 50 nm range of wavelength shifts.

Abstract:We present the direct observation of four-wave mixing over a detuning range of more than 3 THz in an InGaAs/AlInAs strain-compensated quantum cascade laser (QCL) amplifier emitting at 4.3 μm by simultaneous injection of a single mode QCL and a broadly tunable source. From its intensity, we determine a χ(3) of 0.9 × 10−15 m2 V−2, in good agreement with transport model simulations based on the density matrix approach. This four-wave-mixing mechanism is an important driving factor in mode proliferation occurring in connection with the recent demonstration of comb generation in broadband QCLs.

Abstract:We propose for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, an on-chip integrated few-mode erbium–ytterbium co-doped waveguide amplifier based on an 800 nm thick Si3N4 platform, which demonstrates high amplification gains and low differential modal gains (DMGs) simultaneously. An eccentric waveguide structure and a co-propagating pumping scheme are adopted to balance the gain of each mode. A hybrid mode/polarization/wavelength-division (de)multiplexer with low insertion loss and crosstalk is used for multiplexing and demultiplexing in two operation wavebands centered at 1550 nm and 980 nm, where the light in these two bands serves as the signal light and pump light of the amplifier, respectively. The results demonstrate that with an input signal power of 0.1 mW, TE0 mode pump power of 300 mW, and TE1 mode pump power of 500 mW, the three signal modes (TE0/TM0/TE1) all exhibit amplification gains exceeding 30 dB, while maintaining a DMG of less than 0.1 dB.
