Abstract:Silicon photonic devices based on complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible technologies have shown attractive performances on very-large-scale monolithic optoelectronic integration, high speed modulation and switching, and efficient off-chip optical coupling. This paper presents the recent progress on fast silicon optical modulation, wavelength-insensitive optical switching and efficient optical coupling techniques in our group. Several CMOS-compatible silicon optical couplers with different structures have been developed, showing the highest coupling efficiency of 65%. Broadband silicon-based optical switches with sub-nanosecond switching on-off time are experimentally realized. Silicon modulators with novel PN junctions are demonstrated with the speed up to 50 Gb s −1 .

Abstract:A coupler is proposed to interface a hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide (HDLPW) with a silicon photonic slab waveguide. The HDLPW is firstly designed and optimized to attain the best tradeoff between the mode confinement and the propagation distance. The designed coupler is inspired from the taper configuration and numerically modeled through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The results demonstrate that a high confinement and low loss of the energy is achieved from a silicon photonic slab waveguide into the dielectric slot of area 50×200nm2 in the HDLPW. The transmission attained through the coupler with a compact size of 400nm is found to be as high as 80% (1dB). Further, the planar nature of taper configuration makes the coupler easy to fabricate using the state-of-the-art CMOS facilities. The proposed coupler is useful in enabling the integration between photonic and hybrid plasmonic waveguides and thus realizing on-chip hybrid integrated circuits.

Abstract:We propose mode couplers and converters based on dual-core hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBGF) structures, which might be potential solutions for integrated all-fiber multiplexers or demultiplexers of a mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission system using HC-PBGFs. Coupling properties of LP01 and LP11 mode in the mode coupler are investigated and applied to mode separators and polarization separators. Mode transition from LP01 to LP11 and LP21 mode are demonstrated in the mode converter whose smaller core is expected as input end and matched with single-mode fiber. The coupling between fundamental mode and high-order modes is accomplished through the resonant effect, which is fulfilled by modifying the structure parameter of the smaller core. Such mode converters based on dual-core HC-PBGF could be a promising substitute for the free-space coupling device, which is costly and not suitable for integration design in MDM systems and other hollow-core fiber experiments and applications.

Abstract:Multidimensional multiplexing technologies have been proven to be a promising scheme to meet the demands of high-capacity optical interconnects and optical processing networks. However, challenges remain to realize multidimensional hybrid multiplexing data transmission and signal processing between few-mode fiber transmission links and on-chip optical processing networks, since the optical coupling between fiber and chip is almost exclusively in the single-mode regime. Here, a multidimensional fiber-to-chip optical processing system is proposed and demonstrated for hybrid wavelength-, mode-, and polarization-division multiplexing signals, where multidimensional coupling between few-mode fiber transmission link and on-chip multi-mode processing network is realized by using a 3D photonic integrated (de)multiplexers on a glass chip as well as 2D photonic integrated (de)multiplexers on a silicon chip, and the on-chip multidimensional optical processing network composed by parallel cascaded micro-ring resonator array performs a function of reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer. By operating wavelength-division multiplexing in conjunction with mode-division multiplexing and polarization-division multiplexing, the communication bandwidth of fiber-to-chip optical processing systems can be further scaled. The work achieves coupling from few-mode fibers to on-chip multi-mode waveguides using a combination of 3D and 2D photonic integrated circuits. It enables the multiplexing, transmission, and processing of hybrid multidimensional signals in terms of wavelength, mode, and polarization. This approach offers a mixed integration solution for multidimensional processing from fiber to chip, thereby boosting the development of multi-dimensional multiplexing. image
Design of Silicon Photonic Wavelength Conversion Chip for Mode-division Multiplexing Signals

Abstract:A silicon photonic wavelength conversion chip is proposed and designed for mode-division multiplexing signals, where multiple signal modes are simultaneously converted using FWM effects. Asymmetric tapered directional couplers (ATDC) are used to generate the TE 11 modes from TE 01 modes of the pump and signal and the MDM signals are generated by combined the TE 11 and TE 01 modes. The wavelength conversion is performed in a highly nonlinear silicon waveguide, which is designed with high conversion efficiency and low inter-mode crosstalk. Simulation results show that the mode-channel crosstalk is about -27.5 dB and the excess loss is less than 3.2dB over a wavelength band of ~ 100nm in the ATDC. In a 741-nm-wide, 220-nm-high and 8.7-mm-long silicon waveguide, the conversion efficiency is -20.7 dB and the 3-dB conversion bandwidth is 70 nm.

Abstract:An on-chip three-mode division multiplexing circuit using a simple ADC-based TE 0 & TE 1 & TE 2 (de)multiplexer is demonstrated to improve the link capacity of on-chip optical interconnects. The proposed (de)multiplexer does not contain any tapered waveguide which is different from the previous mode (de)multiplexer based on ADCs. Here, we choose multimode waveguide width first and then confirm corresponding width of the other two waveguides. Thus the bus waveguide without any tapers can not only reduce complexity of (de)multiplexer but also reduce difficulty of the fabrication. Our simulation results show that the hybrid multiplexer has relatively low loss and low crosstalk about −40 dB, −26.99 dB and −28.72 dB for each mode around 1550 nm with a width-variation w =±25 nm. These properties make the proposed mode-(de)multiplexer suitable for application in high-capacity data transmission.

Abstract:Because on-chip integration of light sources cannot be realized effectively now, integrated nanophotonic chips must couple external light to the integrated photonic waveguide with high efficiency. Realizing high efficiency coupling requires a low-loss coupling structure. In this paper, the factors allowing high efficiency coupling to be realized are analyzed theoretically and the coupling between a lensed fiber and a tapered silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide is realized experimentally. Because the coupling efficiency of this structure is not ideal in the experiment, a scheme of direct alignment between the lensed fiber and a cantilever waveguide is proposed. Although the scheme offers a very high coupling efficiency in theory, because of the warpage of the waveguide they cannot be directly aligned experimentally. Finally, this paper advances a scheme for the tapered fiber to be directly overlapped onto the Si3N4/SiO2 cantilever. It is found that the coupler maintains an ideal coupling efficiency for wavelength from 1530 nm to 1600 nm, laying a foundation for the integration of nano-photonic devices and optical fibers. Abstract:Based on the symmetrical characteristic of fiber eigenmodes and high freedom of light phase manipulation of metasurfaces, this study presents a metasurface‐based fiber‐to‐chip multiplexing coupler that can simultaneously realize flexible‐mode conversion and multiplexing coupling between few‐mode fibers and on‐chip waveguides. With the ultracompact footprint and low crosstalk, such implementation is beneficial to the integration and miniaturization of fiber optical systems. Here, a metasurface‐based fiber‐to‐chip multiplexing coupler is presented that can realize flexible mode conversion and multiplexing coupling between few‐mode fibers and on‐chip single‐mode waveguides. The proposed approach makes use of the symmetrical characteristics of fiber eigenmodes and high freedom of light phase manipulation to obtain the functional phase distribution of metasurfaces. The use of cylindrical nanopillar as metasurface nanostructures ensures its polarization independent optical response. Several fiber‐to‐chip multiplexing couplers are demonstrated by using the angular spectrum methods and the finite‐difference time‐domain (FDTD) simulations. It is found that the two or three modes can be flexibly demultiplexed and then be coupled into the corresponding on‐chip waveguides with low crosstalk. Further, two possible fabrication schemes for multiplexing couplers are proposed and then the related fabrication tolerances and misalignment effects are evaluated and discussed. Compared with traditional on‐chip couplers, metasurface‐based couplers have advantages of ultracompact footprint and low crosstalk. Such study explores the application of metasurfaces in multiplexing coupling between few‐mode fiber and on‐chip single‐mode waveguides, which is expected to break through the bottleneck of current mode‐division multiplexing technologies in optical interconnection and meet the ever‐increasing demand for large data throughput of the photonic integrated chips.

Abstract:We propose an efficient optical coupler between a submicrometer-sized silicon waveguide on a silicon photonic chip and a multi-micrometer wide polymer waveguide on an optical printed circuit board for interchip optical networks. We show low coupling loss <0.4 dB with high lateral and angular tolerance to misalignment so that coupling can be done by automatic pick-and-place equipments with high throughput and low cost. Abstract:With ultra-high index contrast and ultra-small cross sections, silicon nanometer optical waveguides have super light field limit ability and provide a very promising way to realize nano-photonic integrated circuits with high integration density. It is well-known that mode conversion and coupling play an important role for realizing various functionality elements in photonic integrated circuits. The theory of mode conversion and coupling new structures and devices in silicon photonics integrated circuits are analyzed and discussed in detail. The mode transmission and evolution process of silicon nanometer optical waveguide tapered structure are studied, and the unique polarizationdependent mode conversion mechanism is revealed. The results show that when asymmetry exists in the cross section of the optical waveguide, it is possible to produce polarization mode miscellaneous in some specific waveguide widths. Which provide a convenient method for realizing polarization rotation. By adjusting the phase matching conditions of mode conversion and coupling in asymmetric directional coupled structures, important approaches for realizing ultra-small polarization-beam splitters as well as broadband mode multiplexers/demultiplexers are provided.
Silicon Mode-(De)multiplexer for a Hybrid Multiplexing System to Achieve Ultrahigh Capacity Photonic Networks-on-chip with a Single-Wavelength-carrier Light

Abstract:Hybrid multiplexing technology combining polarization multiplexing and mode multiplexing is presented to expand the capacity of photonic networks-on-chip by 2N times with a multimode optical waveguide which supports 2N guided-modes. Only one laser diode is needed for such a multiplexing system. A novel mode-(de)multiplexer with low excess-loss and low crosstalk is proposed by utilizing a structure with cascaded asymmetrical directional couplers. A 1×4 mode-(de)multiplexer is designed as an example. It is possible to achieve more channels (e.g., 2N=16) with two orthogonal polarizations. When an array of high-speed optical modulators (e.g., 70Gbps) is integrated, the total capacity of an on-chip photonic link can be over 1Tbps with a single-wavelength-carrier light.
Efficient Fiber‐to‐Chip Interface via an Intermediated CdS Nanowire

Abstract:Based on a fiber‐nanowire‐silicon waveguide (SiW) cascade structure, an alternative approach for interfacing an optical fiber and an on‐chip SiW is demonstrated. Such a fiber‐to‐chip interface ensures a bidirectional coupling efficiency up to 90% and a 3‐dB bandwidth over 100 nm centered around a 1570‐nm wavelength, with a 10‐μm‐length on‐chip coupling structure. An efficient fiber‐to‐chip interface via an intermediated CdS nanowire is demonstrated. The fiber mode is firstly squeezed through a fiber taper drawn at the end of a single‐mode fiber, then evanescently coupled into an intermediated CdS nanowire with a longitudinally tapering profile, and finally coupled into an on‐chip silicon waveguide (SiW) via a waveguide taper fabricated on it. Since the fiber‐nanowire‐SiW cascade structure is designed to match effective indices in each coupling area, such a fiber‐to‐chip interface ensures a bidirectional coupling efficiency up to 90% and a 3‐dB bandwidth over 100 nm in experiments. The difference of coupling efficiencies between the TM or TE modes is less than 0.5 dB in the spectral range of 1545–1635 nm. The footprint of the on‐chip coupling structure is about 10 μm in size. The results may provide a compact, efficient, and versatile fiber‐to‐chip interface in applications including optical interconnects, coherent communication, and quantum optical circuitry.

Abstract: On-chip optical interconnect has been widely accepted as a promising technology to realize future large-scale multiprocessors. Mode-division multiplexing (MDM) provides a new degree of freedom for optical interconnects to dramatically increase the link capacity. Present on-chip multimode devices are based on traditional wave-optics. Although large amount of computation and optimization are adopted to support more modes, mode-independent manipulation is still hard to be achieved due to severe mode dispersion. Here, we propose a universal solution to standardize the design of fundamental multimode building blocks, by introducing a geometrical-optics-like concept adopting waveguide width larger than the working wavelength. The proposed solution can tackle a group of modes at the same time with very simple processes, avoiding demultiplexing procedure and ensuring compact footprint. Compare to conventional schemes, it is scalable to larger mode channels without increasing the complexity and whole footprint. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate a set of multimode building blocks including crossing, bend, coupler and switches. Low losses of multimode waveguide crossing and bend are achieved, as well as ultra-low power consumption of the multimode switch is realized since it enables reconfigurable routing for a group of modes simultaneously. Our work promotes the multimode photonics research and makes the MDM technique more practical.

Abstract:We propose a silicon photonicgrating coupling scheme for dual-band multiplexing in optical fibers. By utilizing subwavelength grating effective refractive index engineering, a dual-band operating grating coupler and a wavelength-polarization diplexer are designed. Both devices are fabricated on a 220-nm silicon-on-insulator and require only one 220-nm full etch step to facilitate cost-effective production. The subwavelength grating coupler guides S-band and O-band lights from a single-mode fiber into a waveguide as transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic modes, while the subwavelength diplexer separates the two signals into two waveguides. Experimentally, our proposed scheme for coupling and multiplexing can achieve a total insertion loss of –4.26 dB at near 1490 nm and –5.86 dB at near 1310 nm.

Abstract:A small silicon mode (de)multiplexer with cascaded asymmetrical directional couplers is demonstrated experimentally. As an example, a four channel mode (de)multiplexer is designed and realized for TM polarization. The fabricated mode (de)multiplexer has a low excess loss (<1 dB) as well as low crosstalk (<= 23 dB) over a broad wavelength range (similar to 20 nm). Abstract:Optical interconnects have emerged as promising solutions for assisting electrical interconnects in short-reach scenarios, where high bandwidth density and energy efficiency are of particular importance. Mode-division multiplexing (MDM), capable of enhancing the bandwidth density and energy efficiency of optical systems, has drawn tremendous interest. However, the chip-to-chip MDM optical interconnects are impeded by the multimode chip-fiber interfaces, where the transverse modes on the MDM chip mismatch with the linear polarization modes in the circular core few-mode fiber (CCF). Moreover, the high differential group delays (DGDs) of a conventional CCF make the digital signal processing (DSP) computation complex thus consuming high power. To overcome these bottlenecks, a new multimode coupling solution based on a rectangular core few-mode fiber with ultra-low DGDs and an integrated multimode coupler is proposed. Based on this coupling scheme, a chip-to-chip MDM transmission experiment is performed on the TE00, TM00, TE10, and TM10 modes, and the highest bandwidth density of 19.4 Tb s mm -1 is realized at the chip facet. The DSP power consumption is & AP;6% of a conventional CCF-based system. It is believed that this work will pave the way for ultra-compact, high density, low cost, and low computation-complexity optical interconnects, such as data centers, cloud computing, and telecommunications. The multimode chip-fiber interface is a bottleneck in achieving high bandwidth-density optical interconnects employing mode-division multiplexing because the transverse modes of a waveguide on chip mismatch with the linear polarization modes of a conventional few-mode fiber. Abstract:Metasurfaces have found broad applicability in free-space optics, while its potential to tailor guided waves remains barely explored. By synergizing the Jones matrix model with generalized Snell's law under the phase-matching condition, we propose a universal design strategy for versatile on-chip mode-selective coupling with polarization sensitivity, multiple working wavelengths, and high efficiency concurrently. The coupling direction, operation frequency, and excited mode type can be designed at will for arbitrary incident polarizations, outperforming previous technology that only works for specific polarizations and lacks versatile mode controllability. Here, using silicon-nanoantenna-patterned silicon-nitride photonic waveguides, we numerically demonstrate a set of chip-scale optical couplers around 1.55 mu m, including mode-selective directional couplers with high coupling efficiency over 57% and directivity about 23 dB. Polarization and wavelength demultiplexer scenarios are also proposed with 67% maximum efficiency and an extinction ratio of 20 dB. Moreover, a chip-integrated twisted light generator, coupling free-space linear polarization into an optical vortex carrying 1. orbital angular momentum (OAM), is also reported to validate the mode-control flexibility. This comprehensive method may motivate compact wavelength/polarization (de)multiplexers, multifunctional mode converters, on-chip OAM generators for photonic integrated circuits, and high-speed optical telecommunications. Abstract:Advanced multiplexing technologies including wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM), polarization-division multiplexing (PDM), and mode-division multiplexing (MDM) have been utilized as a cost-effective solution to enhance the capacity of an optical-interconnect link. The on-chip (de) multiplexers, including WDM filters, PDM devices, and MDM devices, are the most important key components in a multi-channel multiplexed optical interconnect system. Hybrid (de) multiplexer to enable various multiplexing technologies simultaneously are becoming more and more important to achieve many channels. In this paper we give a review for our recent work on silicon photonic integrated devices for realizing multi-channel multiplexed on-chip optical interconnects.
