Abstract:Material's history has a strong correlation with its properties even two pieces are the same in appearance and under the same processes. In this study, the effect of drilling of titanium alloy prior and post to laser shock peening on its fatigue property was investigated. Although a high density of dislocations and a tortuous fatigue propagation path were generated after LSP, the fatigue life of prior-drilled samples was still dramatically decreased due to the detrimental tensile residual stress generated at the hole edge. Contrarily, with compressive residual stress at the hole edge, the fatigue life of post-drilled ones was significantly increased.
