Abstract:In the practical operation of compressors, both surge and deep stall are to be avoided. For a compressor, the minimum feasible flow is usually obtained in pre-operational tests. However, it will change during speed transients, which may cause serious security issues. Thus, an indicator that can recognize the stall severity at variable speeds is necessary. Dynamic tests are performed on an unshrouded centrifugal compressor. Real-time pressure fields at the tip clearance are captured under different operating conditions. Based on the chaos theory, the filtered one-dimensional signals are respectively reconstructed. A feature indicator is extracted to represent the chaotic bifurcation determinacy of the original signal. The indicators at different locations under variable conditions are analyzed in detail. A specific radial position at impeller outlet is found to be the best area to apply this recognition indicator. In particular, before the upcoming surge, the indicator at this special position will tend to a fixed value, which is irrelevant to the rotating speed, but has a certain relationship with both the filtering method and the experimental environment. This stall recognition indicator can effectively define the stall severity and prevent deep stall or surge, especially with varying speeds.
