Abstract:Sodium-ion battery (SIB) as one of the most promising large-scale energy storage devices has drawn great attention in recent years. However, the development of SIBs is limited by the lacking of proper anodes with long cycling lifespans and large reversible capacities. Here we present rational synthesis of Rayleigh-instability-induced bismuth nanorods encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes (Bi@N-C) using Bi2S3 nanobelts as the template for high-performance SIB. The Bi@N-C electrode delivers superior sodium storage performance in half cells, including a high specific capacity (410 mA h g-1 at 50 mA g-1), long cycling lifespan (1000 cycles), and superior rate capability (368 mA h g-1 at 2 A g-1). When coupled with homemade Na3V2(PO4)3/C in full cells, this electrode also exhibits excellent performances with high power density of 1190 W kg-1 and energy density of 119 Wh kg-1total. The exceptional performance of Bi@N-C is ascribed to the unique nanorod@nanotube structure, which can accommodate volume expansion of Bi during cycling and stabilize the solid electrolyte interphase layer and improve the electronic conductivity.

Abstract:Alloying-type anode materials have considerably promoted the development of potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), enabling them to achieve high-energy-density. However, large volume expansion and sluggish dynamic behavior have become key issues affecting electrochemical performance. Herein, bismuth (Bi) nano-rods are anchored on reduced graphene (rGO) and encapsulated via N-doped C (NC) to construct Bi@rGO@NC architecture as anode materials for SIBs and PIBs. The hierarchical confinement effect of three-dimensional conductive networks can not only improve electrode stability upon cycling via suppressing the large volume variation, but also eliminate the band gap of Bi and accelerate ion diffusion, thereby exhibiting favorable electrochemical reaction kinetics. Thus, Bi@rGO@NC contributes an ultra-long lifetime, over 1000 cycles, and an outstanding rate property to SIBs and PIBs. This work can pave the way for the construction of high-performance alloying-type anode materials for SIBs and PIBs.

Abstract:Research on alloy-type anode materials with micro/submicrospherical morphology is of great significance for the development of high energy-density Li-ion batteries. A facile and cost-effective route is adopted to prepare homogeneous submicrospherical and porous Bi2S3@nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) nanocomposites, which exhibit considerably better Li-storage performance than pure Bi2S3 and Bi2O3 submicrospheres. Analyses on the electrochemical behavior and morphology of the electrode show that the good performance of Bi2S3@NC can be correlated with its stable submicrospherical structure and decreased charge-transfer resistance, for which the NC coating layer and porous interior of Bi2S3 are supposed to be the two main contributors. The submicrospherical structure and facile synthesis of Bi2S3@NC will be very suitable for practical electrode fabrication technology of Li-ion batteries.

The well‐designed composite structure endows the Bi@NC with uniformly dispersed Bi nanoflowers to alleviate the attenuation while the N‐doped carbon frameworks improve the conductivity and ion transport of the whole electrode. Bismuth (Bi) has attracted attention as a promising anode for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its suitable potential and high theoretical capacity. However, the large volumetric changes during cycling leads to severe degradation of electrochemical performance and limits its practical application. Herein, Bi nanoflowers are encapsulated in N‐doped carbon frameworks to construct a novel Bi@NC composite via a facile solvothermal method and carbonization strategy. The well‐designed composite structure endows the Bi@NC with uniformly dispersed Bi nanoflowers to alleviate the attenuation while the N‐doped carbon frameworks improve the conductivity and ion transport of the whole electrode. As for sodium‐ion half‐cell, the electrode exhibits a high specific capacity (384.8 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1) and excellent rate performance (341.5 mAh g−1 at 10 A g−1), and the capacity retention rate still remains at 94.9% after 5000 cycles at 10 A g−1. Furthermore, the assembled full‐cell with Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode and Bi@NC anode can deliver a high capacity of 251.5 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, and its capacity attenuates only 0.009% in each cycle after 2000 times at 5.0 A g−1. This work offers a convenient, low‐cost, and eco‐friendliness approach for high‐performance electrodes in the field of sodium ion electrochemical storage technology.

Abstract:Bismuth (Bi) has emerged as a prospective candidate as Na-ion and potassium-ion battery anodes because of its unique advantages of low cost, high theoretical gravimetric capacity (386 mAh g-1), and superior volumetric capacity (3800 mAh cm-3). However, the low electronic conductivity and the huge volume expansion of Bi during the alloying/dealloying reactions are extremely detrimental to cycling stability, which seriously hinder its practical application. To overcome these issues, we propose a rational design: Bi@C nanospheres with the unique petaloid core-shell structure are synthesized in one step for the first time and then combined with different contents of graphene (GR) nanosheets to form the composites Bi@C@GR. The Bi@C nanospheres with a core-shell structure are beneficial to shortening the transmission path of electrons/ions and reducing the risk from structural rupture of the particles during cycling. In addition, the combination of Bi@C nanospheres and porous GR could greatly improve the conductivity and prevent the aggregation of particles, which is conducive to better cycling stability and rate performance. Consequently, Bi@C@GR-2 presents a superior reversible capacity for sodium storage (300 mAh g-1 over 80 cycles) and potassium storage (200 mAh g-1 over 70 cycles) at 0.1 A g-1. Furthermore, in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and ex situ transmission electron microscopy are carried out to analyze and reflect the kinetic reaction mechanism and the phase change of the Bi@C@GR-2 electrode during the charge/discharge processes.

Abstract:Bismuth (Bi) has emerged as a promising candidate for sodium-ion battery anodes because of its unique layered crystal structure, superior volumetric capacity, and high theoretical gravimetric capacity. However, the large volume expansion and severe aggregation of Bi during the alloying/dealloying reactions are extremely detrimental to cycling stability, which seriously hinders its practical application. To overcome these issues, we propose an effective synthesis of composite materials, encapsulating Bi nanoparticles in N,S co-doped carbon nanoribbons and composites with carbon nanotubes (N,S-C@Bi/CNT), using Bi 2 S 3 nanobelts as templates. The uniform distribution of Bi nanoparticles and the structure of carbon nanoribbons can reduce the diffusion path of ions/electrons, efficiently buffer the large volume change and prevent Bi from aggregating during cycles. As expected, the N,S-C@Bi/CNT electrode shows superior sodium storage performance in half cells, including a high specific capacity (345.3 mA h g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 ), long cycling stability (1000 cycles), and superior rate capability (336.0 mA h g −1 at 10.0 A g −1 ).

Abstract:Bismuth (Bi) is a promising material as the anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) due to its characteristics such as reasonable price and high theoretical volumetric capacity (3800 mAh cm −3 ). Nevertheless, considerable drawbacks have hindered the practical applications of Bi, including its relatively low electrical conductivity and inevitable volumetric change during the alloying/dealloying processes. To solve these problems, we proposed a novel design: Bi nanoparticles were synthesized via a single-step low-pressure vapor-phase reaction and embedded onto the surfaces of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). After being vaporized at 650°C and 10 -5 Pa, Bi nanoparticles less than 10 nm were uniformly distributed in the three-dimensional (3D) MWCNT networks to form a Bi/MWNTs composite. In this unique design, the nanostructured Bi can reduce the risk of structural rupture during cycling, and the structure of the MWCMT network is beneficial in shortening the electron/ion transport path. In addition, MWCNTs can improve the overall conductivity of the Bi/MWCNTs composite and prevent particle aggregation, thus improving the cycling stability and rate performance. As an anode material for SIB, the Bi/MWCNTs composite has demonstrated excellent fast charging performance with a reversible capacity of 254 mAh/g at 20 A/g. A capacity of 221 mAh g −1 after cycling at 10 A/g for 8000 cycles has also been achieved for SIB. As an anode material for PIB, the Bi/MWCNTs composite has delivered excellent rate performances with a reversible capacity of 251 mAh/g at 20 A/g. A specific capacity of 270 mAh g −1 after cycling at 1 A g −1 for 5000 cycles has also been achieved for PIB.

Abstract:Sodium–ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as an alternative technology because of their merits in abundance and cost. Realizing their real applications, however, remains a formidable challenge. One is that among the limitations of anode materials, the alloy‐type candidates tolerate fast capacity fading during cycling. Here we first synthesize a three‐dimensional framework superstructure assembled with carbon nanobelt arrays decorated with metallic Bi nanospheres coated carbon layer by themolysis of Bi‐based metal‐organic framework nanorods as anode material for SIBs. Due to the unique structural superiority, the anode design manifests excellent sodium‐storage performance in terms of high capacity, excellent cycling stability, and ultrahigh rate capability up to 80 A/g with a capacity of 308.8 mAh/g. Pairing the current anode with a perylene‐3,4,9,10‐tetracarboxylic dianhydride cathode yields a full cell that delivers the energy density up to 129 Wh/kg. The unprecedented sodium storage ability is not only attributed to the unique hybrid architecture, but also to the production of homogeneous and thin solid electrolyte interface layer and the formation of uniform porous nanostructures during cycling in ether‐based electrolyte. Importantly, we illuminate the deeper understanding of the underlying cause of performance improvement, which is vital to provide the theoretical basis for application of SIBs. Abstract:Bismuth (Bi) as alloying-type anode has aroused extensive attention because of its high theoretical specific capacity and suitable working voltage. However, it is subjected to enormous volume expansion due to the alloying/dealloying reaction, which leads to rapid capacity decay. In this work, the confined Bi nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Bi/MWCNTs) are proposed as sodium storage anodes. The confined structure design effectively enhances the structural stability of Bi anode materials for sodium-ion batteries. MWCNTs can provide an elastic space to alleviate the volumetric change of Bi anode, thus enhancing cyclic stability. Additionally, the MWCNTs shells boost the electronic conductivity and provide interconnection routes to accelerate the charge transport and Na + ions diffusion, and improve interface reaction kinetics, which further enhances the rate capability of Bi/MWCNTs anode. Therefore, it delivers a high reversible specific capacity of 361.6 mA h g −1 and retains the capacity retention of 89.2 % at 0.1 A g −1 after 500 cycles. Moreover, it shows remarkable long-term cyclic capability (219.2 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 over 1000 cycles), and excellent rate capability (220.1 and 173.4 mA h g −1 at 2 and 5 A g −1 , respectively). This novel structural design strategy in alloying anodes is significantly benefiting to improve sodium storage properties.

A High-Volumetric-capacity Bismuth Nanosheet/graphene Electrode for Potassium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Potassium ion batteries (PIBs) with high-volumetric energy densities are promising for next-generation low-cost energy storage devices. Metallic bismuth (Bi) with a structure similar to graphite, is a promising anode material for PIBs due to its high theoretical volumetric capacity (3763 mA h cm −3 ) and relatively low working potential (−2.93 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). However, it experiences severe capacity decay caused by a huge volume expansion of Bi when alloying with potassium. This study reports a flexible and free-standing Bi nanosheet (BiNS)/reduced graphene oxide composite membrane with designed porosity close to the expansion ratio of BiNS after charging. The controlled pore structure improves the electron and ion transport during cycling, and strengthens the structural stability of the electrode during potassiation and depotassiation, leading to excellent electrochemical performance for potassium-ion storage. In particular, it delivers a high reversible volumetric capacity of 451 mA h cm −3 at the current density of 0.5 A g −1 , which is much higher than the previously reported commercial graphite material.
A Multi-Layered Composite Assembly of Bi Nanospheres Anchored on Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanosheets for Ultrastable Sodium Storage

Abstract:Bismuth (Bi) is a promising anode candidate for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) with a high volumetric capacity (3765 mA h cm-3) and moderate working potential but suffers from large volume change (ca. 250%) during the sodiation/desodiation process, resulting in pulverization of the electrode, electrical contact loss, excessive accumulation of solid electrolyte interfaces, etc., devastating the cycling stability of the electrode seriously. Addressing this issue significantly relies on rational micro- and nano-structuring. Herein, we prepared a 3D multi-layered composite assembly of Bi/carbon heterojunctions with 0D bismuth nanospheres distributed and anchored on 2D nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NCSs), using a preorganization strategy by taking full advantage of the strong complexation ability of Bi3+. The multi-layered composite assembly is periodic and close-packed, with Bi nanospheres <25 nm, carbon nanosheets ∼30 nm, and an average interlayer space of ∼75 nm. Such a specific architecture provides abundant electrochemically active surfaces and ion migration channels as the Bi nanospheres are attached to the 2D nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets via a point-to-surface pattern. Moreover, the mono-layer Bi nanospheres oriented along the 2D-surface of NCSs are kinetically favorable for the recognition of Na+ by the active sites of Bi nanospheres as well as for avoiding the long distance migration of Na+ (external diffusion of Na+). Furthermore, thermodynamically, the small size and high surface energy of ultrasmall Bi nanospheres could contribute to high ion mobility (internal diffusion of Na+) and promote electrochemical reactions as well. The multi-layered composite assembly of Bi@NCSs (ML-Bi@NCSs) not only provides a robust 3D framework guaranteeing the whole structural stability but also ensures direct and full contact of each active nano-building block with electrolyte, thereby forming a high-throughput electron/ion transport system. When evaluated as the anode for SIBs, ML-Bi@NCSs deliver superior high-rate capability up to 30 A g-1 (specific capacity: 288 mA h g-1) and long-term cycling stability (capacity retention: 95.8% after 5000 cycles at 10 A g-1 and 90.6% after 10 000 cycles at 20 A g-1, respectively).

Abstract:To enhance potassium storage performance of graphene, in situ formed electroactive bismuth nanoparticles were introduced into the porous graphene. The 2 O 3 /graphene composites, which possess the special microstructure that Bi nanoparticles are coated by Bi 2 O 3 and attached to the porous graphene, was synthesized via an environmental-friendly and simple solvothermal method combined with high-temperature sintering under inert environment using graphene oxide, BiCl 3 and ethanol as raw materials. Benefiting from the special microstructure and synergistic effect of nano-bismuth particles and graphene, 2 O 3 /graphene composites display better electrochemical performance than graphene. Between 0.01 and 3.0 V (vs K + /K), the electrode was galvanostatically discharged/charged at 100 mA g −1 and the optimal 2 O 3 /graphene composite ( 2 O 3 /G-50) has large initial charge capacity (886.4 mAh g −1 ), which is significantly larger than the theoretic capacities of Bi (385 mAh g −1 ) and graphene (279 mAh g −1 ), and after 100 cycles, the high remaining charge capacity of 466.4 mAh g −1 for 2 O 3 /G-50 was obtained. While the remaining charge capacity of graphene is only 112 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. When electrode cycled at high current density of 800 mA g −1 , the initial charge capacities of 2 O 3 /G-50 and graphene are 294.1 and 130 mAh g −1 , respectively, and the corresponding remaining capacities are 179.1 and 67.1 mAh g −1 , respectively. The results imply that the introduction of high-capacity electroactive materials and the design of special microstructures are effective strategies to significantly improve the potassium storage performance of carbon-based anode materials for potassium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Bismuth (Bi) has attracted considerable attention as promising anode material for sodium‐ion batteries (NIBs) owing to its suitable reaction potential and high volumetric capacity density (3750 mA h cm −3 ). However, the large volumetric expansion during cycling causes severe structural degradation and fast capacity decay. Herein, by rational design, a self‐healing nanostructure 3D continuous bulk porous bismuth (3DPBi) is prepared via facile liquid phase reduction reaction. The 3D interconnected Bi nanoligaments provide unblocked electronic circuits and short ion diffusion path. Meanwhile, the bicontinuous nanoporous network can realize self‐healing the huge volume variation as confirmed by in situ and ex situ transmission electron microscopy observations. When used as the anode for NIBs, the 3DPBi delivers unprecedented rate capability (high capacity retention of 95.6% at an ultrahigh current density of 60 A g −1 with respect to 1 A g −1 ) and long‐cycle life (high capacity of 378 mA h g −1 remained after 3000 cycles at 10 A g −1 ). In addition, the full cell of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 |3DPBi delivers stable cycling performance and high gravimetric energy density (116 Wh kg −1 ), demonstrating its potential in practical application.

Few-Layer Bismuthene with Anisotropic Expansion for High-Areal-Capacity Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Abstract:Bismuth is a promising anode material for state-of-the-art rechargeable batteries due to its high theoretical volumetric capacity and relatively low working potential. However, its charge storage mechanism is unclear, hindering further improvement of the cell performance. Here, using in situ transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques as well as theoretical analysis, it is found that a large anisotropic volume expansion of 142% occurs along the z-axis largely due to the alloy reaction during sodiation, significantly reducing the electrochemical performance of bismuth electrodes. To address this problem, ultrathin few-layer bismuthene with a large aspect ratio is rationally synthesized, and can relieve the expansion strain along the z-axis. A free-standing bismuthene/graphene composite electrode with tunable thickness achieves a strikingly stable and high areal sodium storage capacity of 12.1 mAh cm(-2), which greatly exceeds that of most reported electrode materials. The clarification of the charge storage mechanism and the superior areal capacity achieved should facilitate the development of bismuth-based high-performance anodes for practical electrochemical energy-storage applications.

Abstract:Although chalcogenide anodes possess higher potassium storage capacity than intercalated‐based graphite, their drastic volume change and the irreversible electrochemical reactions still hinder the effective electron/ion transfer during the potassiation/depotassiation process. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes the synthesis of a lamellar nanostructure where graphene nanosheets are embedded with SnSb2Se4 nanoparticles (SnSb2Se4/GNS). In the product, fine monodisperse SnSb2Se4 nanoparticles are coupled with graphene nanosheets to form a porous network framework, which can effectively mitigate the drastic volume changes during electrode reactions and guarantee the efficient potassium ion storage through the synergistic interactions among multiple elements. Various electrochemical analyses prove that SnSb2Se4 inherits the advantages of the binary Sb2Se3 and SnSe while avoiding their disadvantages, confirming the synergistic effect of the ternary‐chalcogenide system. When tested for potassium storage, the obtained composite delivers a high specific capacity of 368.5 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 and a stable cycle performance of 265.8 mAh g−1 at 500 mA g−1 over 500 cycles. Additionally, the potassium iron hexacyanoferrate cathode and the SnSb2Se4/GNS anode are paired to fabricate the potassium‐ion full cell, which shows excellent cyclic stability. In conclusion, this strategy employs atomic doping and interface interaction, which provides new insights for the design of high‐rate electrode materials.

Sandwich-structured dual carbon modified bismuth nanosphere composites as long-cycle and high-rate anode materials for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:Bismuth as alloy-based anode material has a high theoretical specific capacity (385 mAh g−1) and volumetric capacity (3800 mAh cm−3). However, its severe volume expansion during the alloying process will cause structural collapse and capacity degradation. In this work, dual carbon materials containing outmost thin carbon layer and graphene are employed to modify bismuth nanospheres to form a sandwich-like carbon/bismuth/reduced graphene oxide composite (CPVP+C2H2/Bi/rGO), which is fabricated via a facile solvothermal method and subsequent chemical vapor deposition (CVD) strategy. The thin carbon layer coated on the surface of Bi nanoparticles can effectively suppress the huge volume changes of Bi. The graphene oxide as a conductive matrix favors the successful loading of Bi nanospheres, which limits the particle aggregation of Bi upon cycling. The dual carbon also can improve the conductivity of the overall electrode. As anode materials for sodium-ion batteries, the CPVP+C2H2/Bi/rGO shows excellent sodium storage performance, better than CPVP/Bi/rGO. At a high current density of 5 A g−1, this electrode can retain a capacity of up to 327.6 mAh g−1 after 1200 cycles. The assembled full battery with CPVP+C2H2/Bi/rGO as anode and Na3V2(PO4)3/rGO as cathode also presents good electrochemical performance. The outstanding electrochemical performance of CPVP+C2H2/Bi/rGO is attributed to the well-designed sandwich-like composite structure and synergistic effect of dual carbon and Bi nanospheres.
