Abstract:This study proposes an automatic and rapid method for measuring the dimensions of weld seams in hull structures using 3D laser scanning technology. Traditional contact measurement methods often suffer from drawbacks that must be addressed. Initially, the spatial point cloud data of the model were acquired using a handheld 3D laser scanner and converted into a depth map. The discrete wavelet transform, which leverages Haar and DB2 wavelets, known for their sensitivity to abrupt signal changes, was applied to these depth maps to effectively identify planar boundaries and transition regions. Subsequently, a set of algorithms was used to identify the planar regions within the model and extract the corresponding point clouds. This method was applied to evaluate both flat weld and fillet weld models. The deviations in the flat weld height and fillet weld throat thickness were within 0.1 mm. The results were validated against manual measurements, demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed methodology. The results indicate the adaptability of the proposed method to interplanar weld models with diverse angles, sizes, and roughness levels, thereby facilitating convenient data acquisition without manual intervention. The results obtained aligned closely with the manual measurement results and met the requirements of practical measurements.
