Abstract:The rapid development of modern science and technology puts forward higher and higher requirements for displacement measurement. As a non-contact measurement technology, laser ranging has played an important role in various fields for the unique advantages and has become a hot topic in the field of measurement research. At present, there are little research on high-precision displacement measurement at medium and long distance, the needs of which are widespread in practical application, so this work has important value. Among various laser ranging technologies, the laser triangulation method has the advantages of high-speed, high precision, simple structure, etc. Therefore, this paper chooses the direct laser triangulation method to carry out the research after analyzed the common types of laser triangulation system. In view of the requirements of high-precision displacement measurement requirements at medium and long distance, this article discussed the design of laser triangulation measuring system and the selection of structural parameters. Then we proposed a direct laser triangulation measurement structure under Scheimpflug conditions. This system selects PSD displacement transducer to collect the position information of the scattered light spot. After that, this paper discusses the principle of laser triangulation distance measurement and simulates the system. Then the influence of different parameters on high-precision displacement measurement and the relationship between them are investigated. Based on the research talked above, we got a set of structural parameters of the displacement measurement system. The measurement accuracy can be ~micron with the working distance of 500mm.

Abstract:A single method for simultaneously measuring 2-D rotational angles is proposed by using a collimation laser. Compared with the traditional autocollimator measurement method, the proposed method can also be applied to longer distance and higher precision angular measurement. The 2-D angular drift of the reference datum beam is suppressed by a factor of 10 via expansion. A traditional single lens in front of the detector is replaced by combination lenses to increase the sensitivity and compactibility. The measurement principle of the 2-D angles is also analyzed. The feasibility and stability of the presented system are verified by comparison with the Renishaw ML10 laser interference measuring system. The experimental results show that the linear correlativity is 0.99999 and the point-to-point standard deviation error is less than +/- 0.2 arcsec in a +/- 60-arcsec range and 2000-mm distance. This proposal is most advantageous for simultaneous long distance and high accuracy of 2-D angular errors measurement of a linear guide manner. Abstract:The method of simultaneous measurement of six-dimensional parameters is a difficult problem from measuring guide track of machine tool and other fields. A novel system model is presented through adopting techniques of the laser alignment and laser interference, which is based on the single laser beam data. The system model and measuring parameters are analyzed theoretically in detail. The results show that the resolution of the angle errors (yaw, pitch and roll) is less than 0.2″ and the resolution of the linear displacements is better than 0.3 μm. The whole measuring system is characterized of simple structure and high precision. The moving measurement head is wireless, which eliminates any added errors and inconvenience introduced by pushing and pulling the wires. The analysis results can provide theoretical basis and reference for designing system.

Abstract:A novel sensitivity improving method for simultaneously measuring five-degree-of-freedom errors of a moving linear stage is proposed based on collimator and interferometry techniques. The measuring principle and parameters of the system are analyzed theoretically. The experimental results proved that the resolution of the linear displacement of the proposed method has twice that of the current linear interferometer, and the resolutions of the two-dimensional straightness error measurement can be improved by a factor of 8 compared with the movement of the retroreflector itself by using multireflection and lens magnification. The resolutions of the pitch and yaw angular error measurement have been improved by a factor of 10 compared with the rotation of the plane mirror itself by using expander lenses. The whole measuring system is characterized of simple structure, small volume, and high precision. The moving component of the measurement system is wireless, which eliminates the errors and inconvenience introduced by the wire connection. Calibration and comparison tests of this system compared with Renishaw laser interferometer system have been carried out. Experimental results show good consistency for measuring a linear guide way.

Abstract:A low cost and high precision system which can measure two-degrees-of-freedom straightness simultaneously is proposed based on a laser collimator. In the system, a miniature fiber coupled diode laser generates a collimating beam. The sensitivity of the straightness error measurement is magnified by a factor of 4 compared with the lateral movement of the retro-reflector itself after the multi-reflections. A Renishaw ML10 laser interference measurement system was used to verify the developed system in a series of experiments in the laboratory environment. Experimental results agree with the expected results. The two-dimensional straightness error measurement had linear correlativity close to 1 and the standard one-to-one deviation error was better than 0.32 mu m obtained over a travel range of 600 mu m.

Abstract:Scientific instruments and facilities used for calibrating the dynamic angle error of inertial instruments have played more and more important roles in mechanism error research and accuracy improvement. Present attitude measurement methods can not simultaneously meet the requirements of the inertial instrument angle error calibration in dynamic environments such as linear or angular vibration. Based on the collaborative integration and modeling calculation of single-point laser Doppler vibrometer, this paper proposes a dynamic attitude measurement system that can completely realize non-contact real-time accurate three-dimensional rotation angle measurement, filling in the blank of non-contact dynamic angle error calibration of inertial instrument. Besides, we propose a distance calibration method to reduce the angle measurement error from 0.34 degrees to 0.0072 degrees, which fully satisfies the non-contact measurement requirements of the inertial instrument.

Abstract:Laser and visual imagery have been broadly utilized in computer vision and mobile robotics applications because these sensors provide complementary information. Since the single-point laser range finder can provide depth information of a single pixel in the observed image, its price and size is very suitable for handheld devices or very lightweight robotic platforms. So the combination of a single-point laser range finder and a camera has become increasingly useful in recent report and industrial applications. In this paper, we propose two accurate calibration methods for determining the position and direction of the laser range finder relative to the camera. Furthermore, we can accomplish calibration even without observing the laser spot in camera image. We evaluate the two methods through experiments which demonstrate their efficiency and high reliability.

Abstract:Multi-line structured light three-dimensional (3D) scanning measurement system enables to obtain the richer 3D profile data of the object simultaneously during one frame, ensuring high accuracy while structured light is deformed for the modulation by the object. Nevertheless, current calibration methods cannot fully take advantage of its high precision. In this paper, a fast and high-accuracy 3D measurement system based on multi-line lasers with a spatially precise structure via integrating a diffraction grating was proposed. This helps achieve precise calibration results of the light planes by introducing spatial constraint relations of the diffractive light, thus improving measurement accuracy. The operating principle and the workflow of the proposed system were described in detail. The measurement accuracy of the developed prototype was verified through contrastive experiments. At a working distance of 400 mm, the results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the proposed system is 0.083 mm, which is improved by 37.6% compared to the traditional calibration method of light planes for the ranging system. The system utilizing a grating that facilitates the integration of the device has great application value.

Abstract:Dynamic displacement of structures is an important index for in-service structural condition and behavior assessment, but accurate measurement of structural displacement for large-scale civil structures such as long-span bridges still remains as a challenging task. In this paper, a vision-based dynamic displacement measurement system with the use of digital image processing technology is developed, which is featured by its distinctive characteristics in non-contact, long-distance, and high-precision structural displacement measurement. The hardware of this system is mainly composed of a high-resolution industrial CCD (charge-coupled-device) digital camera and an extended-range zoom lens. Through continuously tracing and identifying a target on the structure, the structural displacement is derived through cross-correlation analysis between the predefined pattern and the captured digital images with the aid of a pattern matching algorithm. To validate the developed system, MTS tests of sinusoidal motions under different vibration frequencies and amplitudes and shaking table tests with different excitations (the El-Centro earthquake wave and a sinusoidal motion) are carried out. Additionally, in-situ verification experiments are performed to measure the mid-span vertical displacement of the suspension Tsing Ma Bridge in the operational condition and the cable-stayed Stonecutters Bridge during loading tests. The obtained results show that the developed system exhibits an excellent capability in real-time measurement of structural displacement and can serve as a good complement to the traditional sensors.

Abstract:In the application domain of large-scale high-precision measurement systems, accurately calibrating the precision of point position measurements is a pivotal issue. Traditional calibration methods rely on laser interferometers and high-precision displacement stages, which are not only costly but also challenging to implement in fixed measurement systems. Addressing this challenge, this study introduces an evaluation method for the spatial point measurement accuracy in large-scale fixed high-precision measurement systems. The models for the relationship between the limit deviation and the maximum deviation of finite measurements were established, as well as the limit deviation and point position measurement accuracy. The spatial point position accuracy of the measurement field was calculated by the measurement errors of a calibration rod. The algorithm was validated using a large-scale measurement platform based on photogrammetric technology. Experimental results demonstrate that the method achieved a point position measurement accuracy calibration better than 0.1 mm within a 20 m measurement range, effectively enhancing the measurement data's accuracy and reliability. This research optimizes the calibration process for large-scale fixed measurement systems, improves calibration efficiency, and obviates the need for complex equipment to complete the calibration process, which is of considerable importance to the development of high-precision spatial point position measurement technology.

Abstract:In the past decade, the emerging machine vision-based measurement technology has gained great concerns among civil engineers due to its overwhelming merits of non-contact, long-distance, and high-resolution. A critical issue regarding to the measurement performance and accuracy of the vision-based system is how to identify and eliminate the systematic and unsystematic error sources. In this paper, a vision-based structural displacement measurement system integrated with a digital image processing approach is developed. The performance of the developed vision-based system is evaluated by comparing the results simultaneously obtained by the vision-based system and those measured by the magnetostrictive displacement sensor (MDS). A series of experiments are conducted on a shaking table to examine the influence factors which will affect the accuracy and stability of the vision-based system. Abstract:A new technique based on the property of laser is developed to measure subgrade settlement with high accuracy and resolution. In this technique a laser mounted on the subgrade produces a horizontal beam and is received and imaged by a charge-coupled device (CCD). When the subgrade settlement occurs, it results in a displacement of the image on the CCD. By measuring the displacement one can monitor the settlement in situ with high accuracy. Using a laser beam rather than a light emitting diode (LED), the CCD can receive a high brightness spot. This makes the system working effectively during daytime despite the interference of sunlight and makes it possible to detect the settlement when the distance between the laser and the CCD is 40 m. By laser beam shaping, the image on the CCD is nearly rounded so that the CCD can read its position easily and improve the resolution of the system. The system is designed to work in the field and it works normally under moderate atmospheric turbulence both experimentally and theoretically. So, the system enjoys some promising merits such as high accuracy, high resolution, low environmental influence factor and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The resolution of the system depends on the focal length of the lens used. With a cemented doublet of focal length 1000 mm, the resolution is 0.25 mm or better and the theoretical calculations agree well with the experimental data.

Abstract:Laser is becoming an increasingly important tool in 3-D precise measurement. To reduce the measurement error, the size of the laser spot should be as small as possible. Aiming at the problem mentioned above, a calibration and measurement method based on optical lenses is proposed. Limited to manufacturing and installing errors, the decentration, and tilt among the laser beam, planoconcave lens (PL) and liquid lens (LL) cannot be avoided exactly. The analysis of the optical path with the decentration and tilt is performed. Regarding the complicated calculation, MATLAB is utilized to obtain the motion law of the target spot. The calibration experiment shows that the root mean square error (RMSE) of points used for line fitting is no more than 0.116 mm at a range of 10 m. Moreover, the measurement experiment shows that the RMSE of point measurement and distance measurement of the system is 0.425 and 0.219 mm, respectively. We demonstrate that the calibration and measurement method with optical lenses is feasible for 3-D measurement.

A Novel Visual Scale Recovery for Resource-Limited Platform using Single-Point Laser and Spatial Constraints

Abstract:Motion estimation of vision-only has no absolute scale, which leads to unmeasurable scale and scale drift. Existing methods of visual scale recovery are either costly or complex, making it difficult to be widely used in resource-limited industries. A lightweight and low-cost method of scale recovery is urgently needed for low-configuration platforms. We innovatively use a camera and an invisible single-point laser transmitter to achieve six-degree-of-freedom (DOF) state estimation, which has minimal sensor requirements for visual scale recovery in terms of size, weight, power, and computational power consumption. It involves the incorporation of a laser into the camera’s field of view and uses a certain spatial relationship between the laser and the camera as a prior constraint for introducing an absolute scale. To address the problem that the laser spot is not visible and cannot be predicted, a background matching method was designed to achieve visual projection matching. To increase the robustness of the engineering, a dual-thread scale estimation method was developed to ensure the continuity and accuracy of scale recovery. The verification conducted with our hardware module and recorded datasets confirmed that the proposed method accurately recovers an absolute scale and controls scale drift. Compared with ORB-SLAM3 and VINS-Mono, which are currently the most concise schemes, the method put forward in this work reduces computational power consumption by more than 54%. Finally, the laser transmitter costs less than U.S. ${\$}$ 10. These features render the proposed method an efficient and affordable approach for visual scale recovery.

Abstract:The accuracy of the micro-displacement feed detection and control is decided by the calibration of the system. On the basis of laser interference principle, a new scaling method is introduced. Combining hardware subdivision and software subdivision, the scaling system can calibrate the micro-displacement effectively. The scaling system is composed of optical interferometer, signal processing circuits and microprocessor. Experiments proved that it is feasible to rectify the micro-displacement system with laser interference. The resolution of the micro-displacement is better than 0.1 micron after it was revised.

Abstract:The main methods for measuring geometric parameters used to be static or quasi-static. At present former static measurement methods with sliding guide have met with great difficulty when measuring the outline and large of large-scale workpiece or coordinates of objects moving in large dimension Thus we established the laser tracking system far high precision, large range, noncontact, dynamic measurement Laser tracking system involves in interdisciplinary knowledge and it can be made up, into a new type of computer integral system with both measuring and controlling capacity. With common static coordinate measurement system such as CMR[1], the probe must move along the three orthogonal guides equipped with standard rulers while the laser tracking system has no such objective reference coordinate system So we put forward the notion of "Virtual Coordinate System", that means during the measurement the coordinate frame is not fixed On the primary stage of our research, we established practical system for 2D moving target measurement in real-time. Tn order to measure the coordinate of the target three tracking stations are used which only measure length changes between the target and stations each, with no angles are measured By solving non-linear-least-square equations, the target and the lacking stations' coordinate can be attained respectively. We also present the optical design and the tracking controlling system based on the PID controlling principle. At the end of this paper, we will give the experiment result of the system.
High-Precision Measurement of Microscales Based on Optoelectronics and Image Integration Method

Abstract:Currently, there are various types of microscales and the conventional line detection system usually has only one detection method, which is difficult to adapt to the diverse calibration needs of microscales. This article investigates the high-precision measurement method of a microscale based on optoelectronics and the image integration method to solve the diversified calibration needs of microscales. The automatic measurement and processing system integrates two methods: the photoelectric signal measurement method and the photoelectric image measurement method. This article studies the smooth motion method based on ordinary linear guides, investigates the method of reducing the cosine error of a small-range interference length measurement, proposes an image-based line positioning method, and studies the edge and center recognition algorithms of the line. According to the experimental data, the system's measurement accuracy was analyzed using the photoelectric signal measurement method to measure the 1 mm microscale, the maximum difference from the reference value was 0.105 μm, the standard uncertainty was 0.068 μm, and the absolute value of normalized error was less than 1. The accuracy of the image measurement method to measure the 1 mm microscale was consistent with that of the photoelectric signal method. The results show good consistency in the measurement results between the two methods of the integrated measurement system. The photoelectric signal method has the technical characteristics of high measurement efficiency and high accuracy, while the pixel-based measurement of the image method has two-dimensional measurement characteristics, which can realize measurements that cannot be realized by the photoelectric signal method; therefore, the measurement system of optoelectronics and image integration is characterized by high precision and a wide range of measurement adaptations.
A Scheme for Enhancing Precision in 3-Dimensional Positioning for Non-Contact Measurement Systems Based on Laser Triangulation

Abstract:Laser triangulation allows non-contact measurement in the third dimension. Due to the nonlinearities presented in camera and laser sensor, large range distances are quite difficult to measure with high precision. In order to enhance the precision and accuracy of large range measurement based on laser triangulation, we propose a novel scheme composed of four laser emitters, curve fitting subpixel location algorithm for laser center detection, and the linear regression approach based on the Gaussian model for calibration. When an object performs a 100 mm displacement from a closer to a farther point, our system achieved a repeatability up to ±7 µm, an estimated standard deviation of fitting error within 0.0027 mm, an expanded uncertainty of repeatability within 0.13 mm, an average error variation of rotational plane within 0.15 degree and a nonlinearity error within ±0.04% in full scale. Compared to published results, our proposed method shows an enhancement in accuracy. The error is significantly reduced and maintains at the low level for large ranges, which makes this system applicable and suitable for industrial and indoor applications.

Volume Measuremen Of Moving Irregular Objects Using Linear Laser And Camera

Abstract:A non-contact volume measurement method for irregular objects is proposed in this paper based on 3D reconstruction technology, where a linear laser and a camera are used. The line-surface model of laser surface and feature points is first established in a camera coordinate system. The point cloud coordinates of measured object arc calculated using the geometric measurement principle and transformed into the world coordinate system from the camera coordinate system. The differential object point cloud is obtained by subtracting the reconstructed model from the initial background model, and the object volume is calculated by integrating the differential depth point cloud data. To extract accurate center of light stripe, a fitting algorithm is proposed using the truncated gaussian distribution. The measurement error is less than 4.5% at the distance of 2 meters away from the measurement devices. The experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately reconstruct 3D objects and accurately measure the irregular objects volume.
Linear Laser Scanning Measurement Method Tracking by a Binocular Vision

Abstract:The 3D scanning of a freeform structure relies on the laser probe and the localization system. The localization system, determining the effect of the point cloud reconstruction, will generate positioning errors when the laser probe works in complex paths with a fast speed. To reduce the errors, in this paper, a linear laser scanning measurement method is proposed based on binocular vision calibration. A simple and effective eight-point positioning marker attached to the scanner is proposed to complete the positioning and tracking procedure. Based on this, the method of marked point detection based on image moment and the principle of global coordinate system calibration are introduced in detail. According to the invariance principle of space distance, the corresponding points matching method between different coordinate systems is designed. The experimental results show that the binocular vision system can complete localization under different light intensities and complex environments, and that the repeated translation error of the binocular vision system is less than 0.22 mm, while the rotation error is less than 0.15°. The repeated error of the measurement system is less than 0.36 mm, which can meet the requirements of the 3D shape measurement of the complex workpiece.
