Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) that converts syngas into long-chain hydrocarbons is a key technology in the chemical industry. As one of the best catalysts for FTS, the Fe-based composite develops rich solid phases (metal, oxides, and carbides) in the catalytic reaction, which triggered the quest for the true active site in catalysis in the past century. Recent years have seen great advances in probing the active-site structure using modern experimental and theoretical tools. This Perspective serves to highlight these latest achievements, focusing on the geometrical structure and thermodynamic stability of Fe carbide bulk phases, the exposed surfaces, and their relationship to FTS activity. The current reaction mechanisms on CO activation and carbon chain growth are also discussed, in the context of theoretical models and experimental evidence. We also present the outlook regarding the current challenges in Fe-based FTS.

Abstract:Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) targeting liquid fuel products is key technology to alleviate the excessive dependence on unsustainable crude oil. Fabrication of highly active phase has long been an attractive topic in the field of Fischer-Tropsch catalysis. However, as a promising active species, the efficient formation of Fe2C phase is inhibited by kinetic barrier via traditional approaches. In this context, we firstly synthesized phase-pure Fe2N nanoparticles on Al2O3, which has similar coordination structure with Fe2C. The in-situ XRD data in time series reveal that pre-existing of interstitial N atoms in Fe2N structure leads to the effective phase transformation to Fe2C at low temperatures (280 °C). The as-prepared catalysts demonstrated highly catalytic activity without any induction period, coupling with a high selectivity of 60wt.% for desired valuable products. In addition, the corresponding structural evolution uncover the determining effect of these electron-rich Fe sites in the Fe2X (N or C) structure on superior performance.

Abstract:Fabrication of χ-Fe5C2 active phase is important for efficient iron-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis but faces a challenge in the controllable synthesis of high purity phase. Herein, we report selective synthesis of χ-Fe5C2 catalysts by interfering surface reactions during thermal treatment. In-situ analyses provided insight into the mechanism of the structure evolution of iron-based catalysts under varied thermal treatment atmospheres and conditions. The atmosphere of 64 %H2/32 %CO/4 %Ar yields a compromise among the competitive oxygen removal, carbon permeation, hydrogenation and carbon deposition reactions, thus selectively forming high-purity χ-Fe5C2. Such catalyst shows high CO conversion of 96 %, selectivity to C5+ hydrocarbons of 40 % and light olefins of 30 %, and good stability under mild conditions (250 °C, 2.0 MPa). A plausible catalyst structure-performance relation is finally established by combining kinetics analysis with multiple characterization techniques. The simultaneously enhanced activity and selectivity are related to the more terrace sites of χ-Fe5C2, and the pre-formed carbon coating during pretreatment process improves catalyst stability.

Abstract:The Fe-based Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) catalyst shows a rich phase chemistry under pre-treatment and FTS conditions. The exact structural composition of the active site, whether iron or iron carbide (FeC x ), is still controversial. Aiming to obtain an insight into the active sites and their role in affecting FTS activity, the swarm intelligence algorithm is implemented to search for the most stable Fe(100), Fe(110), Fe(210) surfaces with different carbon ratios. Then, ab initio atomistic thermodynamics and Wulffman construction were employed to evaluate the stability of these surfaces at different chemical potentials of carbon. Their FTS reactivity and selectivity were later assessed by semi-quantitative micro-kinetic equations. The results show that stability, reactivity, and selectivity of the iron are all affected by the carbonization process when the carbon ratio increases. Formation of the carbide, a rather natural process under experimental conditions, would moderately increase the turnover frequency (TOF), but both iron and iron carbide are active to the reaction.

Abstract:Despite the extensive study of the Fe-based Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) over the past 90 years, its active phases and reaction mechanisms are still unclear due to the coexistence of metals, oxides, and carbide phases presented under realistic FTS reaction conditions and the complex reaction network involving CO activation, C–C coupling, and methane formation. To address these issues, we successfully synthesized a range of pure-phase iron and iron-carbide nanoparticles (Fe, Fe5C2, Fe3C, and Fe7C3) for the first time. By using them as the ideal model catalysts on high-pressure transient experiments, we identified unambiguously that all the iron carbides are catalytically active in the FTS reaction while Fe5C2 is the most active yet stable carbide phase, consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculation results. The reaction mechanism and kinetics of Fe-based FTS were further explored on the basis of those model catalysts by means of transient high-pressure stepwise temperature-programmed surface reaction (STPSR) experiments and DFT calculations. Our work provides new insights into the active phase of iron carbides and corresponding FTS reaction mechanism, which is essential for better iron-based catalyst design for FTS reactions.

Abstract:θ-Fe3C formation is usually considered as a deactivation factor in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). Herein, θ-Fe3C dominated Fe@C core–shell catalysts were fabricated by pyrolysis of MIL-101(Fe) in ethyne for studying the roles of θ-Fe3C and carbon shell in FTS. In the evolution of MIL-101(Fe) into Fe@C catalysts, ethyne decomposition promotes the formation of θ-Fe3C and carbon shells around nanoparticles. By modulating the pyrolysis temperature, θ-Fe3C and/or α-Fe nanoparticles coated with different carbon shells (amorphous carbon, graphene or graphite shells) are acquired. By exploring the relationship between phase composition, structure of catalysts and FTS performance, it is found that θ-Fe3C is confirmed to be FTS active, which exhibits superior CC chain growth ability, i.e., higher C5+ selectivity and lower CH4 selectivity. Meanwhile, graphene shell inhibits iron nanoparticles aggregation and stabilizes the catalysts.

Abstract:Although we often understand empirically what constitutes an active catalyst, there is still much to be understood fundamentally about how catalytic performance is influenced by formulation. Catalysts are often designed to have a microstructure and nanostructure that can influence performance but that is rarely considered when correlating structure with function. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is a well-known and potentially sustainable technology for converting synthetic natural gas ("syngas": CO + H2) into functional hydrocarbons, such as sulfur- and aromatic-free fuel and high-value wax products. FTS catalysts typically contain Co or Fe nanoparticles, which are often optimized in terms of size/composition for a particular catalytic performance. We use a novel, "multimodal" tomographic approach to studying active Co-based catalysts under operando conditions, revealing how a simple parameter, such as the order of addition of metal precursors and promoters, affects the spatial distribution of the elements as well as their physicochemical properties, that is, crystalline phase and crystallite size during catalyst activation and operation. We show in particular how the order of addition affects the crystallinity of the TiO2 anatase phase, which in turn leads to the formation of highly intergrown cubic close-packed/hexagonal close-packed Co nanoparticles that are very reactive, exhibiting high CO conversion. This work highlights the importance of operando microtomography to understand the evolution of chemical species and their spatial distribution before any concrete understanding of impact on catalytic performance can be realized.
Single-Phase θ-Fe3C Derived from Prussian Blue and Its Catalytic Application in Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

Abstract:Elucidation of the intrinsic catalytic principle of iron carbides remains a substantial challenge in iron-catalyzed Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), due to possible interference from other Fe-containing species. Here, we propose a facile approach to synthesize single-phase θ-Fe3C via the pyrolysis of a molecularly defined Fe-C complex (Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3), thus affording close examination of its catalytic behavior during FTS. The crystal structure of prepared θ-Fe3C is unambiguously verified by combined XRD and MES measurement, demonstrating its single-phase nature. Strikingly, single-phase θ-Fe3C exhibited excellent selectivity to light olefins (77.8%) in the C2-C4 hydrocarbons with less than 10% CO2 formation in typical FTS conditions. This strategy further succeeds with promotion of Mn, evident for its wide-ranging compatibility for the promising industrial development of catalysts. This work offers a facile approach for oriented preparation of single-phase θ-Fe3C and provides an in-depth understanding of its intrinsic catalytic performance in FTS.

Abstract:Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis A major challenge in Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is to discern the formation mechanism of active phase cobalt carbide (Co2C). In article number 2404046, Xiaotao Zu, Wei Liu, Jian Liu, and co‐workers solve the issue by directly visualizing this FTS‐ induced phase evolution of cobalt catalyst, by using comprehensive analysis, e.g. high‐resolution TEM, in situ TEM and electron diffraction. Notably, the full roadmap to form the catalytic active cobalt carbides is unraveled, starting from reduction of Co3O4 nanorods precursor to CoO nanocrystals intermediate, then carburization into Co2C nanocrystals and subsequent ripening growth into Co2C‐nanoprism.

Abstract:Cobalt carbides have been recognized as an active phase for the production of light olefins and alcohols in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. In this study, in situ X-ray diffraction experiments were performed to investigate the stability and catalytic performance over a single-phase Co3C catalyst under reaction conditions. The in situ X-ray diffraction results indicated that the Co3C phase remained stable with no significant changes until the temperature reached 300 °C. The high stability can be attributed to the twinning structure of the single-phase Co3C catalyst. The catalytic evaluation results showed that the single-phase Co3C catalyst had higher activity with high selectivity to long-chain products due to the unique surface structure of Co3C. This work provides guidance for the rational design of efficient cobalt carbide catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis reactions.

Abstract:With an increase in energy consumption globally, Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis is a good alternative for producing fuels and chemicals from coal, natural gas or biomass. Among them, coal to liquids has been put into production in countries that have large coal reserves. In this process, Fe-based catalysts are commonly used due to their earth abundance, comparatively wide operation range and ready availability to handle low H2/CO ratio from coal. Despite their extensive applications, the kinetic and mechanistic understandings of Fe carburization and FT reaction on Fe-carbides are relatively limited due to the complexity of the phase composition of the applied catalysts. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge of FT synthesis on Fe-carbide with an emphasis on the underlying mechanism. Specifically, the employment of a model catalyst, such as Raney Fe, could provide a convenient way to furnish kinetic information regarding Fe carburization and subsequent FT reaction. A major challenge for further understanding catalytic reactions occurring at the Fe-carbide surface is correlating FT activity and selectivity to a specific active site. To address this issue, the advancements of both DFT calculations and surface science techniques are highly demanded.

Abstract:Cobalt carbide (Co2C) possesses high catalytic efficiency Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis (FTS) while the products selectivity appears sensitive to crystallography geometry. Since the Anderson–Schulz–Flory (ASF) distribution in FTS was broken through fabricating facetted Co2C nanocrystals, yet the underlying mechanism of Co2C crystallization remains unclarified suffering from sophisticated catalyst composition involving promoter agents. Herein, we report the synthesis of high‐purity single‐crystal nanoprisms (Co2C‐p) for highly efficient FTS to lower olefins. Through comprehensive microstructure analysis, e.g. high‐resolution TEM, in situ TEM and electron diffraction, as well as finite element simulation of gas flow field, for the first time we disclosed the full roadmap of forming catalytic active cobalt carbides, starting from reduction of Co3O4 precursor to CoO intermediate, then carburization into Co2C‐s and subsequent ripening growth into Co2C‐p. This gas‐induced engineering of crystal phase provides a new synthesis strategy, with many new possibilities for precise design of metal‐based catalyst for diverse catalytic applications. Atomically Defined Iron Carbide Surface for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis Catalysis

Abstract:With the purpose of investigating the reactivity of Fe carbide as an active phase in Fischer–Tropsch catalysis, we studied the formation of a well-defined Fe carbide surface structure resulting from carbon exposure of an Fe film on Au(111). Using two different sources of carbon (C), namely atomic carbon and ethylene gas, we used synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to show that a 6 ML Fe film readily converts into a well-defined and thermodynamically stable carbide phase. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) showed that the surface of the Fe carbide film is crystalline and is dominated by Fe(110)-like facets perturbed into a (2 × 2) periodic structure due to insertion of C in the interstitial sites. The reactivity of the carbide film toward CO, H2, and O2 was furthermore probed by XPS under vacuum conditions. While the pristine Fe carbide surface was unreactive toward hydrogen gas at 500 K, we interestingly found that CO dissociation from a preadsorbed monolayer of CO takes place already at low temperature. This observation points to an intrinsic activity of the Fe carbide phase where additional carbon originating from CO can be placed in the Fe carbide surface. The catalytic significance of the model catalyst surface presented here is that it can be seen as a stable Fe carbide phase with intrinsically vacant sites for additional C insertion at elevated pressure, and we propose that such additional C may act as active species in C–C coupling reactions during FTS. The studies pave the way for a better understanding of FTS processes on Fe-based catalysts on the basis of a well-defined model surface.

Stabilization of ε-iron carbide as high-temperature catalyst under realistic Fischer-Tropsch synthesis conditions

Abstract:The development of efficient catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis, a core reaction in the utilization of non-petroleum carbon resources to supply energy and chemicals, has attracted much recent attention. ε-Iron carbide (ε-Fe2C) was proposed as the most active iron phase for FT synthesis, but this phase is generally unstable under realistic FT reaction conditions (> 523 K). Here, we succeed in stabilizing pure-phase ε-Fe2C nanocrystals by confining them into graphene layers and obtain an iron-time yield of 1258 μmolCO gFe-1s-1 under realistic FT synthesis conditions, one order of magnitude higher than that of the conventional carbon-supported Fe catalyst. The ε-Fe2C@graphene catalyst is stable at least for 400 h under high-temperature conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the feasible formation of ε-Fe2C by carburization of α-Fe precursor through interfacial interactions of ε-Fe2C@graphene. This work provides a promising strategy to design highly active and stable Fe-based FT catalysts.

Abstract:In pursuing cheap and effective oxygen reduction catalysts, the Fe/N/C system emerges as a promising candidate. Nevertheless, the structural transformations of starting materials into Fe- and N-doped carbon catalysts remains poorly characterized under pyrolytic conditions. Here, we explore the evolution of Fe species and track the formation of Fe-N4 site development by employing diverse in-situ diagnostic techniques. In-situ heating microscopy reveals the initial formation of FeOx nanoparticles and subsequent internal migration within the carbon matrix, which stops once FeOx is fully reduced. The migration and decomposition of nanoparticles then leads to carbon layer reconstruction. Experimental and theoretical analysis reveals size-dependent behavior of FeOx where nanoparticles below 7 nm readily release Fe atoms to form Fe-N4 while nanoparticles with sizes >10 nm tend to coalesce and impede Fe-N4 site formation. The work visualizes the pyrolysis process of Fe/N/C materials, providing theoretical guidance for the rational design of catalysts.

Abstract:One key goal of heterogeneous catalysis study is to understand the correlation between the catalyst structure and its corresponding catalytic activity. In this review, we focus on recent strategies to synthesize well-defined Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) nanostructured catalysts and their catalytic performance in FTS. The development of those promising catalysts highlights the potentials of nanostructured materials to unravel the complex and dynamic reaction mechanism, particularly under the in situ reaction conditions. The crucial factors associated with the catalyst compositions and structures and their effects on the FTS activities are discussed with an emphasis on the role of theoretical modeling and experimental results.

Abstract:Identifying the dynamic structure of heterogeneous catalysts is crucial for the rational design of new ones. In this contribution, the structural evolution of Fe(0) catalysts during CO 2 hydrogenation to hydrocarbons has been investigated by using several (quasi) in situ techniques. Upon initial reduction, Fe species are carburized to Fe 3 C and then to Fe 5 C 2 . The by-product of CO 2 hydrogenation, H 2 O, oxidizes the iron carbide to Fe 3 O 4 . The formation of Fe 3 O 4 @(Fe 5 C 2 +Fe 3 O 4 ) core-shell structure was observed at steady state, and the surface composition depends on the balance of oxidation and carburization, where water plays a key role in the oxidation. The performance of CO 2 hydrogenation was also correlated with the dynamic surface structure. Theoretical calculations and controll experiments reveal the interdependence between the phase transition and reactive environment. We also suggest a practical way to tune the competitive reactions to maintain an Fe 5 C 2 -rich surface for a desired C 2+ productivity.

Uniformity Dispersive, Anti-Coking Core@double-Shell-structured Co@SiO2@C: Effect of Graphitic Carbon Modified Interior Pore-Walls on C5+ Selectivity in Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

Abstract:Highly dispersed Co nanoparticles with proper interaction with mesoporous support are benefit for the suppression of self-aggregation, which enhances its Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTs) activity. However, construct such Co based supported catalysts with high activity and stability in FTs by conventional mesoporous support, especially the common used mesoporous SiO2, has proven challenging due to their undesirable hydrothermal stability and poor reducibility. Herein, we developed a unique core@double-shell Co@SiO2@C structure with optimized interface of the mesoporous catalyst by introducing graphitic carbon layer which can weaken the interaction between metallic Co and silica. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, together with Nitrogen adsorption-desorption characterization result, proved the well-defined core@double-shell structure of graphitic carbon modified catalyst. The Co@SiO2@C-2 material produced after optimizing the calcination temperature to 600°C process large surface area and pore volume, and show higher CO conversion (62.2%) and C5+ selectivity (62.2%) than Co3O4@SiO2 in a period of 100h. The significant improvement in the FTS performance of Co@SiO2@C is not only attributed to a good synergistic effect by a combination of the Co dispersion and reducibility. The unique core@double-shell structure with graphitic carbon modified interior pore-walls also contributes to the formation of heavy hydrocarbon, as well as the protecting with the metallic Co particles away from oxidation and aggregation.

Abstract:Mesoporous silica-encapsulated iron materials contribute to the suppression of self-aggregation and thereby enhances the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis activity. However, constructing Fe-based supported catalysts with high activity and selectivity in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to lower olefins (FTO) by a conventional mesoporous silica support has been proven challenging due to its low hydrothermal stability and low reducibility. Herein, we developed a core-shell Fe@SiO2-GC structure with an optimized interface of the catalyst by introducing graphitic carbon (GC) that weakened the Fe-SiO2 interaction. Transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption characterization proved GC-modified catalysts had well-defined core-shell structures. The Fe@SiO2-GC-2 containing the optimal GC content had the largest surface area and pore volume, and outperformed Fe2O3@SiO2 in terms of CO conversion (60.1%) and C2-C4 olefin selectivity (40.7%) within 100 h. The significant improvement of FTO performance was attributed to the rigid porous framework of GC, which allowed free access of syngas and inhibited mesoporous channel collapse during FTO, so the catalytic activity and stability were improved by the synergism between higher Fe dispersion and reducibility. Moreover, the narrow well-defined mesoporous channel also exerted a modest spatial restriction effect, which inhibited the formation of long-chain hydrocarbon and tailored the product distribution toward lower distillate, thus improving the selectivity toward C2-C4.
