Abstract:With an increase in energy consumption globally, Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis is a good alternative for producing fuels and chemicals from coal, natural gas or biomass. Among them, coal to liquids has been put into production in countries that have large coal reserves. In this process, Fe-based catalysts are commonly used due to their earth abundance, comparatively wide operation range and ready availability to handle low H2/CO ratio from coal. Despite their extensive applications, the kinetic and mechanistic understandings of Fe carburization and FT reaction on Fe-carbides are relatively limited due to the complexity of the phase composition of the applied catalysts. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge of FT synthesis on Fe-carbide with an emphasis on the underlying mechanism. Specifically, the employment of a model catalyst, such as Raney Fe, could provide a convenient way to furnish kinetic information regarding Fe carburization and subsequent FT reaction. A major challenge for further understanding catalytic reactions occurring at the Fe-carbide surface is correlating FT activity and selectivity to a specific active site. To address this issue, the advancements of both DFT calculations and surface science techniques are highly demanded.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problem does the paper attempt to solve? The paper primarily explores the latest mechanistic understanding of Fe-carbide catalysts in the Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FT) process. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Background and Current Status**: - With the increase in global energy consumption, Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis has become increasingly important as a method for producing fuels and chemicals from coal, natural gas, or biomass. - In these processes, iron-based catalysts are widely used due to their abundant reserves, wide operating range, and ability to handle syngas with a low hydrogen-to-carbon ratio. - Despite the widespread industrial application of iron-based catalysts, the understanding of the kinetics and mechanisms of iron carbide and subsequent Fischer-Tropsch reactions remains limited, mainly due to the complex phase composition of actual catalysts. 2. **Research Focus**: - The paper summarizes current research progress on Fe-carbide catalysts used in Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis and highlights the fundamental mechanisms involved. - Specifically, it provides kinetic information on the iron carbide process and subsequent Fischer-Tropsch reactions using model catalysts (such as Raney Fe). - One of the major challenges faced by the research is how to correlate Fischer-Tropsch activity and selectivity with specific active sites. 3. **Methods and Technological Advances**: - To address this challenge, further development of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and surface science techniques is needed. - Through these technical means, a better understanding and optimization of Fe-carbide catalysts' performance in Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis can be achieved. In summary, the paper aims to provide a theoretical foundation and technical support for improving catalyst performance and developing new catalysts by deeply exploring the mechanisms of Fe-carbide catalysts in Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis.
