Abstract:Solid-state dielectric energy storage is the most attractive and feasible way to store and release high power energy compared to chemical batteries and electrochemical super-capacitors. However, the low energy density (ca. 1 J cm(-3)) of commercial dielectric capacitors has limited their development. Dielectric materials showing field induced reversible phase transitions have great potential to break the energy storage density bottleneck. In this work, dense AgNbO3 ceramic samples were prepared successfully using solid state methods. Ferroelectric measurements at different temperatures reveal evidence of two kinds of polar regions. One of these is stable up to 70 degrees C, while the other remains stable up to 170 degrees C. The associated transition temperatures are supported by second harmonic generation measurements on poled samples and are correlated with the occurrence of two sharp dielectric responses. The average unit cell volume is seen to increase with increasing DC field and has been interpreted in terms of increasing levels of structural disorder in the system. At a high electric field the structure becomes ferroelectric with high polarization. This field induced transition exhibits a recoverable energy density of 2.1 J cm(-3), which represents one of the highest known values for lead-free bulk ceramics.

Abstract:Improving energy storage density and efficiency of antiferroelectric materials could promote their use within energy storage field, particularly in the context of pulsed power sources. In this study, Sm and Hf co-doped silver niobate (AgNbO 3 ; AN) ceramics were prepared using traditional solid-state method. Comprehensive analysis of crystal structure, microstructure, defects, absorbance, and energy storage performance of the material was conducted. Results reveal that co-doping increased the concentration of cation vacancies and band gap, decreased the M 1 –M 2 and M 2 –M 3 phase transition temperatures, and enhanced the antiferroelectric phase stability and energy storage performance. The (Ag 0.955 Sm 0.015 )(Nb 0.95 Hf 0.05 )O 3 ceramic exhibited energy storage density of 5.35 J/cm 3 and energy storage efficiency of 73% at electric field ( E ) of 295 kV/cm, demonstrating significant improvement. The (Ag 0.955 Sm 0.015 )(Nb 0.95 Hf 0.05 )O 3 ceramic exhibited excellent thermal stability (<5% in the range of 25 °C-125 °C) and frequency stability (<3% in the range of 1–100 Hz under E = 290 kV/cm). Additionally, the (Ag 0.955 Sm 0.015 )(Nb 0.95 Hf 0.05 )O 3 ceramic exhibited ultrahigh discharge speed (∼18 μs) and high discharge energy density (4.9 J/cm 3 ). These advantages make these ceramics promising materials for energy storage applications.

Abstract:The high-energy storage density reported in lead-free AgNbO3 ceramics makes it a fascinating material for energy storage applications. The phase transition process of AgNbO3 ceramics plays an important role in its properties and dominates the temperature and electric field dependent behavior. In this work, the phase transition behavior of AgNbO3 ceramics was investigated by polarization hysteresis and dielectric tunability measurements. It is revealed that the ferrielectric (FIE) phase at room temperature possesses both ferroelectric (FE)-like and antiferroelectric (AFE)-like dielectric responses prior to the critical AFE-FE transition point. A recoverable energy storage density of 2J/cm(3) was achieved at 150kV/cm due to the AFE-FE transition. Based on a modified Laudau phenomenological theory, the stabilities among the AFE, FE and FIE phases are discussed, laying a foundation for further optimization of the dielectric properties of AgNbO3.

Abstract:As a lead-free material, AgNbO3 has received a lot of attention for its potential application in the field of energy storage. Herein, AgxNbO2.5+x/2 ceramics were successfully synthesized via solid state reaction with the x ranged from 1 to 0.92. The effect of silver deficiency on structure, dielectric properties and energy storage performance was investigated. As x value decreased from 1 to 0.94, the unit volume of AgxNbO2.5+x/2 ceramics contracted. Meanwhile, all the compositions displayed double hysteresis loops with reduced Pmax, Pr and enhanced transformation fields (EF and EB) as functions of silver deficiency. Silver deficiency stabilized the antiferroelectric state in the FIE (-like) phase and improved the energy storage performance of AgNbO3 ceramics. Hence, an enhanced energy storage performance (Wrec = 3.1 J/cm3, η = 49%) were achieved in Ag0.94NbO2.97 ceramic.

Abstract:AgNbO3-based antiferroelectric ceramics can be used to prepare dielectric ceramic materials with energy storage performance. However, their efficiency is much lower than that of relaxors, which is one of the biggest obstacles for their applications. To overcome this problem, AgNbO3 ceramics co-doped with Eu3+ and Ta5+ at the A- and B-sites were prepared in this work. The Ag0.97Eu0.01Nb0.85Ta0.15O3 sample has a Wr of 6.9 J/cm3 and an η of 74.6%. The ultrahigh energy storage density and efficiency of Ag0.97Eu0.01Nb0.85Ta0.15O3 has been ascribed to the synergistic effect of the increase in the breakdown electric field, the enhancement of antiferroelectric stability, the construction of multiphase coexistence, and the modification of the domain structure morphology. The Ag0.97Eu0.01Nb0.85Ta0.15O3 ceramic is expected to be one of the options for preparing dielectric capacitors.

Abstract:The development of electronic materials for storing electrical energy is a thriving research field, where the materials used in batteries, supercapacitors, and dielectric capacitors have attracted extensive interest in last decades. The dielectric capacitors showing unique characteristics such as high power density and large charge/discharge rate have been actively studied, where the antiferroelectrics demonstrate great potentials for dielectric energy storage applications by storing and releasing energy upon a reversible electric-field induced antiferroelectric–ferroelectric phase transition. Recently, lead-free antiferroelectric AgNbO3 has emerged as a promising candidate to substitute conventional lead-based antiferroelectrics (such as PbZrO3) in energy storage applications. The phase transition dynamics of AgNbO3 is driven by a complex sequence of oxygen octahedron tilting orders in addition to cation displacement, which can be effectively engineered by a doping strategy. In this article, we present a succinct overview of the phase transition mechanisms in AgNbO3-based ceramics and describe how the phase transition characteristics are affected by the dopants. By exploring the composition related average structure and local structural evolutions, we provide a view toward the goal of establishing a link between the phase transition and physical properties tailored for dielectric energy storage applications.

Abstract:Antiferroelectric materials that display double ferroelectric hysteresis loops are receiving increasing attention for their superior energy storage density compared to their ferroelectric counterparts. Despite the good properties obtained in antiferroelectric La‐doped Pb(Zr,Ti)O3‐based ceramics, lead‐free alternatives are highly desired due to the environmental concerns, and AgNbO3 has been highlighted as a ferrielectric/antiferroelectric perovskite for energy storage applications. Enhanced energy storage performance, with recoverable energy density of 4.2 J cm−3 and high thermal stability of the energy storage density (with minimal variation of ≤±5%) over 20–120 °C, can be achieved in Ta‐modified AgNbO3 ceramics. It is revealed that the incorporation of Ta to the Nb site can enhance the antiferroelectricity because of the reduced polarizability of B‐site cations, which is confirmed by the polarization hysteresis, dielectric tunability, and selected‐area electron diffraction measurements. Additionally, Ta addition in AgNbO3 leads to decreased grain size and increased bulk density, increasing the dielectric breakdown strength, up to 240 kV cm−1 versus 175 kV cm−1 for the pure counterpart, together with the enhanced antiferroelectricity, accounting for the high energy storage density.

Abstract:AgNbO 3 lead-free antiferroelectric (AFE) ceramics are attractive candidates for energy storage applications and power electronic systems. In this study, AgNbO 3 ceramics are synthesized by single-step sintering (SSS) and two-step sintering (TSS) processes under oxygen-free atmosphere, and their energy storage performance is compared. The prepared ceramic materials show characteristic AFE double hysteresis (P–E) loop and excellent energy storage performance. Especially, the AgNbO 3 ceramic materials prepared by TSS achieve a maximum recoverable storage density ( W rec ) of 2.32 J/cm 3 under 150 kV/cm by reducing the remnant polarization (P r ), which is 36% higher than that of the material prepared by SSS (1.7 J/cm 3 ). Furthermore, the AgNbO 3 ceramic exhibits outstanding temperature stability. Specifically, the variation in W rec is less than 6% when the temperature increases from 30 to 120 °C. These remarkable properties are mainly attributed to the high relative density, small grain size, and excellent energy storage performance of the ceramic prepared by TSS, which extends the particle rearrangement time at low temperature and promotes the uniform grain growth at high temperature. Overall, this study can serve as a useful reference for the development of capacitors in pulsed power systems.

Abstract:Lead-free dielectric ceramics with high recoverable energy density are highly desired to sustainably meet the future energy demand. AgNbO3-based lead-free antiferroelectric ceramics with double ferroelectric hysteresis loops have been proved to be potential candidates for energy storage applications. Enhanced energy storage performance with recoverable energy density of 3.3 J/cm3 and high thermal stability with minimal energy density variation (<10%) over a temperature range of 20-120 °C have been achieved in W-modified AgNbO3 ceramics. It is revealed that the W6+ cations substitute the B-site Nb5+ and reduce the polarizability of B-site cations, leading to the enhanced antiferroelectricity, which is confirmed by the polarization hysteresis and dielectric tunability. It is believed that the polarizability of B-site cations plays a dominant role in stabilizing the antiferroelectricity in AgNbO3 system, in addition to the tolerance factor, which opens up a new design approach to achieve stable antiferroelectric materials.

Abstract:AgNbO3 exhibits "peculiar" anti-/ferroelectricity and narrow bandgap semi-conductivity that leads to active responses to different types of external stimuli, including electric fields, light and mechanical forces. Some of these unique properties are also mutually coupled and can be suited for the development of multifunctional devices for a broad range of applications, including dielectric, piezoelectric, high-power energy storage/conversion, photocatalytic and photovoltaic devices. In this review, recent studies of AgNbO3 and AgNbO3-based materials are summarized. The main scope is to establish the correlations between chemical composition, synthesis conditions, structure, and properties, with an improved understanding of the phase transformations taking place in the three so called "M" phases, to ultimately provide guidance on the materials development in two key sectors: high-power energy storage and photocatalysis. Finally, current challenges in multifunctional applications and future research directions are summarized.

Abstract:AgNbO 3 -based antiferroelectric materials have attracted extensive attention in energy storage due to their double polarization-electric field hysteresis loops, but they always suffer from low breakdown strength ( E b ). Films with few defects and small thickness exhibit high breakdown strength, which helps to improve energy storage performance. In the present work, an AgNbO 3 film with a small thickness of ∼200 nm is prepared via pulsed laser deposition, which has a dense microstructure and a small average grain size of ∼34.5 nm. The AgNbO 3 film displays an antiferroelectric nature, as confirmed by the double polarization-electric field hysteresis loops at room temperature. The room temperature phase structure of the AgNbO 3 film determined by the dielectric behaviour is the antiferroelectric M 2 phase. Due to the small thickness and fine grain size, a high E b of 1200 kV/cm is obtained, which boosts a recoverable energy storage density ( W rec ) of 9.3 J/cm 3 and an energy efficiency ( η ) of 63.7 % in the AgNbO 3 film. In addition, W rec exhibits good temperature stability at 30–120 °C. The AgNbO 3 film shows an obvious piezoelectric response after the electric field-induced antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition as confirmed by piezoresponse force microscopy. These results provide guidance for the development of AgNbO 3 antiferroelectric films and devices with good energy storage performance.

Abstract:AgNbO3 (AN)-based lead-free antiferroelectric ceramics are widely studied for their use as dielectric capacitor materials. In this study, Eu3+-doped AN ceramics were prepared and the results show that Eu3+ diffused into the AN lattice. The ceramics were formed by M1 and M2 phases coexisting at room temperature, as distinct from the M1 (M: monoclinic) phase of pure AN. Electrical properties and structural characterization showed that the antiferroelectric stability of the ceramics increases with the increase in Eu3+ levels. At room temperature, Ag0.94Eu0.02NbO3 ceramic exhibited a good energy storage density of 5.3 J/cm3 and a high efficiency of 71.9%. When the temperature rises from room temperature to 140 °C, the efficiency of the sample decreases from 80.4% to 67.1% and Wr decreases from 2.1 to 2.0 J/cm3, which indicates that the sample has good temperature stability. The time constant (t0.9) of this sample was less than 60 ns and the power density (PD) was 51.3 MW/cm3, indicating excellent charge–discharge capabilities. This novel ceramic is expected to be used as a new dielectric capacitor material for pulsed power supplies.

Abstract:Antiferroelectric materials are attractive for energy storage applications and are becoming increasingly important for power electronics. Lead-free silver niobate (AgNbO3) and sodium niobate (NaNbO3) antiferroelectric ceramics have attracted intensive interest as promising candidates for environmentally friendly energy storage products. This review provides the fundamental background of antiferroelectricity with an introduction to the definition of antiferroelectricity, historical research evolution of antiferroelectric materials, and some advanced techniques for structural characterization. Meanwhile, recent progress on lead-free antiferroelectric ceramics, represented by AgNbO3 and NaNbO3, is highlighted in terms of their crystal structures, phase transitions and potential dielectric energy storage applications. Specifically, the origin of the enhanced energy storage performance is discussed from a scientific point of view. The modification approaches are then summarized for the development of new strategies to further improve the energy storage performance. This article concludes with a discussion of the remaining challenges and opportunities for further development of lead-free antiferroelectrics.

Abstract:The invention discloses a silver niobate-based lead-free antiferroelectric ceramic material with high energy storage density and temperature stability and a preparation method thereof. The invention provides an A-site doping method, wherein the chemical general formula of a ceramic component is (RexAg1-3x)NbO3 (x is greater than 0 and less than or equal to 0.06), and Re is a trivalent lanthanide rare earth element (such as La , Sm , Eu , Er , Yb and Lu ). The ceramic system shows a more stable antiferroelectric characteristic, so that the releasable energy density of the ceramic system reaches 2.5-5.2 J/cm . More importantly, the system also has good temperature stability, and the fluctuation of the system does not exceed 10% in the range of 20 DEG C to 140 DEG C.

Abstract:Dielectric ceramic materials have been actively studied for advanced pulsed power capacitor applications. Despite the good properties obtained in lead-based ceramics, lead-free counterparts are highly desired due to environmental regulations. This study revealed the potential of AgNbO3 to be a promising lead-free ceramic for energy storage applications. AgNbO3 ceramics fabricated using a conventional solid-state reaction method under an O-2 atmosphere show a characteristic anti-ferroelectric (AFE) double hysteresis loop at an electric field of 4130 kV cm(-1), with a peak recoverable energy storage density (W-rec) of 1.6 J cm(-3) at 140 kV cm(-1). In addition, the incorporation of MnO2 into AgNbO3 can further increaseWrec, exceeding 2.3 J cm(-3) at 150 kV cm(-1) by the reduction of the remnant polarization, which is due to the enhanced AFE stability induced by the addition of MnO2. Of particular importance is that the 0.1 wt% MnO2-doped AgNbO3 ceramics were found to possess a good thermal stability with Wrec = 2.5-2.9 J cm(-3) over a temperature range of 20-180 8C at 150 kV cm(-1) and 1 Hz.

Abstract:AgNbO3 ceramics have attracted progressively more attention to high power energy storage in dielectric capacitors because of complicated in a series of phase transitions. In this work, Ag1-3x Bi x Nb1-3/5x Sc x O3 (x = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02) ceramics were synthesized via a solid state reaction method in flowing oxygen. The microstructure, dielectric and energy storage properties of as-prepared samples were systematic characterized to evaluate the potential as high energy storage capacitors. A high recoverable energy storage density (3.65 J/cm3) and high efficiency (84.31%) were simultaneously obtained in a modified AgNbO3-based ceramic at 21.5 MV/m. The energy storage performance is improved by the ions doping that effectively interrupt the dipoles arrangement structure and stabilize the disordered antiferroelectric phase in the long-range order. Co-doping of Bi3+ on the A-site and Sc3+ on the B-site in AgNbO3 is an effective method to enhance the electric field intensity of field-induced phase transitions from antiferroelectric (AFE) to ferroelectric (FE) phases. The M1-M2 phase transition shifted to a lower temperature with an increase in the Bi/Sc amounts, which suppressed the ferroelectricity and obtained pinched-hysteresis loops in modified AgNbO3 ceramics. These results indicate that Bi/Sc co-doped AgNbO3 ceramics are highly efficient lead-free antiferroelectric materials for prospective application in high-performance energy storage capacitors.

Abstract:Dielectric materials have drawn increasing attention due to their high power density and fast charge-discharge speed. Although satisfactory energy storage performance has been achieved in lead-based ceramics, the exploration of suitable lead-free substitutions is highly desired since the rising environmental concerns caused by lead-based compounds. Herein, we demonstrate that a giant recoverable energy density of 7.01 J cm−3 together with high energy efficiency under 476 kV cm−1, as well as impressive frequency stability (maximum variation < ±3% at 1−100 Hz) and thermal stability (maximum variation < ±10% over 25−120°C) under 320 kV/cm, can be obtained in Lanthanum (La)-modified AgNbO3 ceramics. It is revealed that the long-range antiferroelectric order in AgNbO3 is interrupted by the incorporation of La, resulting in the transformation of micron-scale antiferroelectric domains into antiferroelectric nanodomains with concurrently improved energy density and efficiency. Additionally, the introduction of La content greatly suppresses the ferrielectricity of AgNbO3 and enhances the dielectric breakdown strength up to 494 kV cm−1 versus 178 kV cm−1 for the pure AgNbO3 ceramics. These results not only reveal the high potential of La-modified AgNbO3 ceramics for energy storage applications but also open up a feasible approach of domain engineering to develop new lead-free energy-storage dielectric materials.
