Abstract:Compared with other morphological nanomaterials, nanorods have many unique properties that are closely related to their thermal stability. However, current studies on melting thermodynamic theory of nanorods are still not perfect, and the mechanism and the quantitative regularities of the effect of size of nanorods on melting thermodynamics still remain unclear. Herein, we proposed a melting model of nanorods, derived the thermodynamic relations (free of any adjustable parameters) between the melting temperature, melting enthalpy, and melting entropy, respectively, and the radius of nanorods, and discussed the mechanism of the effect of nanorods and the size dependences of melting thermodynamic properties. Experimentally, taking the melting of Se nanorods as an experimental system, Se nanorods with different diameters were prepared by a Na2SeSO3 disproportionation method, and then the melting temperature and melting thermodynamic properties were determined by differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the diameter of Se nanorods on the melting temperature and the melting thermodynamic properties were obtained. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical relations. Both theoretical and experimental results demonstrate that the radius and length of nanorods have significant effects on the melting temperature and the melting thermodynamic properties; for nanorods with a large aspect ratio, the main factors of influence are interfacial tension and radius. Compared with spherical nanoparticles with the same radius, the reduced values of the melting temperature and the thermodynamic properties of nanorods are just half of those corresponding to spherical nanoparticles; the melting temperature, the melting enthalpy, and the melting entropy decrease with the decrease in the radius, and when the radius exceeds 10 nm, these physical quantities are all linearly related to the reciprocal of the radius. The theory can describe the quantitative size-dependent melting thermodynamic properties of nanorods, explain and predict the melting behaviors of nanorods.
Size effects on the melting of nickel nanowires: a molecular dynamics study

Abstract:The melting process of nickel nanowires are simulated by using molecular dynamics with the quantum Sutten–Chen many-body force field. The wires studied were approximately cylindrical in cross-section and periodic boundary conditions were applied along their length; the atoms were arranged initially in a face-centred cubic structure with the [001] direction parallel to the long axis of the wire. The size effects of the nanowires on the melting temperatures are investigated. We find that for the nanoscale regime, the melting temperatures of Ni nanowires are much lower than that of the bulk and are linear with the reciprocal of the diameter of the nanowire. When a nanowire is heated up above the melting temperature, the neck of the nanowire begins to arise and the diameter of neck decreases rapidly with the equilibrated running time. Finally, the breaking of nanowire arises, which leads to the formation of the spherical clusters.

Abstract:It is demonstrated that a simple model, free of any adjustable parameter, can be developed for the melting enthalpy and melting entropy of nanocrystals based on Mott's equation for the melting entropy and a model for the size-dependent melting temperature. It is shown that the enthalpy and entropy of melting for a nanocrystal decrease as its size decreases. The results are supported by available experimental results on metallic and organic nanocrystals. The model suggests that the size-dependent melting enthalpy and melting entropy for non-semiconductor nanocrystals are determined by the vibrational component of overall melting enthalpy and entropy.

Abstract:A model is developed to account for the size-dependent melting temperature of pure metallic and bimetallic nanowires, where the effects of the contributions of all surface atoms to the surface area, lattice and surface packing factors and the cross-sectional shape of the nanowires are considered. As the size decreases, the melting temperature functions of pure metallic and bimetallic nanowires decrease almost with the same size-dependent trend. Due to the inclusion of the above effects, the present model can also be applied to investigate the melting temperature depression rate of different low-dimensional system, accurately. The validity of the model is verified by the data of experiments and molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:Indium nanowires with different diameters (20–80 nm) and preferred orientations were electrodeposited in the pores of the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies showed an approximate linear relationship between melting temperature and the reciprocal of diameters. Comparing the experimental data with several theoretical models, we found the effect of crystalline structure should be taken into account for better explaining the size-dependent melting behavior. The influences of surface configuration and nanosolids size on the melting were also discussed.

Abstract:The size dependent melting temperature(M.T.) of Pb nanowires is studied by molecular dynamics simulation method.It is found that the M.T.of Pb nanowires decrease with decreasing the size.The melting process starts from the surface,and then approaches to the center of the wires.It is shown that the M.T.increases during the melting process,which is different from the melting of bulk Pb.Furthermore,the M.T.variation ratio between Pb wires and films is 2∶1 in identical size.Furthermore,it is found that there exists a critical size S(2nmS2.5nm).The stable structure is crystal with size larger than S,and is amorphous with size smaller than S.

Abstract:By considering the surface effects, the melting temperature of nanosolids (nanoparticles, nanowires and nanofilms) has been predicted based on size-dependent cohesive energy. It is shown that the melting temperature of free standing nanosolids decreases with decrease in the solid size, and the melting temperature variation for spherical nanoparticle, nanowire and nanofilm of a material in the same size is 3:2:1. The present theoretical results on Sn and Pb nanoparticles, In nanowires and nanofilms are consistent with the previous experimental values.

Abstract:Analytical models for size-dependent melting temperature Tm(D), melting enthalpy DeltaHm(D), and surface energy gammasv(D) of metallic nanowires have been proposed in terms of the unified nanothermodynamical model where D denotes the diameter of nanowire. As D decreases, Tm(D), DeltaHm(D), and gammasv(D) functions are found to decrease almost with the same size-dependent trend. Due to the inclusion of the effect of dimensionality, the developed model can be applied to other low-dimensional systems. It is found that the ratio of depression of these thermodynamic parameters for spherical nanoparticle, nanowire, and thin film is 3:2:1 when D is large enough (>20h with h being the atomic diameter). The validity of the model is verified by the data of experiments, molecular dynamics simulations, and other theoretical models.

Abstract:A model, free of any adjustable parameters, is extended to predict the size dependence of the melting temperature of semiconductor nanocrystals. The model predictions are consistent with the experimental results for Si, Bi and CdS semiconductor nanocrystals. In addition, the simplified model with fixed material constants is in agreement with the usual phenomenological relationship that the size dependence of the melting temperature is proportional to the reciprocal of the nanocrystal radius.

Abstract:In order to study the size effect of melting of silver nanoparticles, the melting process of silver nanoparticles of different sizes were simulated by molecular dynamics in this paper. Simulation results show that the system potential energy has an obvious mutation within a certain temperature range when solid state transforms into liquid state, which is similar to amorphous body. And, the melting temperature of nanoparticles is significantly lower than that of the bulk materials and the melting point decreases with the reduction in the size of nanoparticles. The dominant mechanism and the relationship between melting point and nanoparticle size were also analyzed.

Abstract:Melting is the most common phenomenon in nature and one of the most important properties of metallic materials. Exploring the size D, shape α, and dimension d effects on the melting temperature Tm of nanocrystals is of great significance for the design, fabrication, and application of quantum devices. In this work, by redefining the critical diameter D0 and introducing shape factor α, a unified model without any adjustable parameters has been developed to describe the Tm(D, α, d) function. The model is compared with the available experimental and simulation data of Cu, Pd, In, Pb, Au, Ag, and Ni nanocrystals and other theoretical works, and a consistent agreement is obtained, which verifies the accuracy of the prediction. This model is also compared with other theoretical works, and we find that it agrees well with Lu's model, while the BOLS method underestimates the melting point. This work not only gives a new perspective on the relationship between size, shape, dimension, and melting temperature but also provides theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of low-dimensional quantum devices.

Abstract:Based on the Lindemann melting model, a model related to gold nanoparticle size and melting temperature for VLS grown silicon nanowire is proposed. Eutectic temperatures of Au-Si with different gold sizes have been calculated using the model and are in agreement with the experimental results. This model has been demonstrated to be reasonable, and it can be used to determine the growth temperature of silicon nanowire.

Abstract:A melting-thermodynamic model is developed, which can describe the effect of size and shape of metallic nanoparticle on its melting-thermodynamic properties. It is predicted that there exist a minimum critical size r(c) = 5r(0)/mu(1/2){1 - exp[-2S(m)(infinity)/3k]} and a lowest melting temperature T-c(r) = T-m(infinity)exp[-2S(m)(infinity)/3k] for metallic nanoparticle. The present theoretical results on the melting point, the melting, entrapy and the melting enthalpy of nanoparticles Au, In, Al and Sn are consistent with the corresponding experimental values.

Abstract:A model is developed to account for the size- and coherence-dependent cohesive energy, melting temperature, melting enthalpy, vacancy formation energy and vacancy concentration of nanowires and nanofilms. It is found that the variation direction (increasing or decreasing) of the thermodynamic properties is determined by the coherent interface, and the quantity of variation depends on the crystal size. The calculated results on Pb nanowires and nanofilms are consistent with the available experimental values.

Abstract:A unified model, free of any adjustable parameters, for the size-dependence and dimension-dependence of melting point depression and superheating of nanocrystals is developed. In terms of the consideration of the surface/volume ratio of nanocrystals, the suppression of melting point of nanocrystals and superheating of embedded nanocrystals are predicted. The model predictions for the melting temperatures of nanocrystals are consistent with the experimental results and molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:The melting behavior of Zn nanowires embedded in the holes of porous anodic alumina membrane with different diameters was studied by using the differential scanning calorimetry. The crystalline structure and morphology of Zn nanowire arrays were characterized by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The melting temperature of Zn nanowire arrays shows the strong dependence on nanowire sizes. The melting temperature was curvilinear with the reciprocal of the diameter of nanowires with the change of the diameter, which was discussed in terms of size-dependent heat of fusion change.

Abstract:Based on a thermodynamic model for size-dependent melting temperature, the size-dependent band-gap of low dimensional semiconductor compounds is modeled without any adjustable parameter. The model predicts an increase of the band-gap of nanoparticles and nanowires for IIB-VIB and IIIB-VB semiconductor compounds, with decreasing their size, which is supported by available experimental and other theoretical results.
