Abstract:Fe–Ni nanoparticles have been synthesized via a nonaqueous solution-phase approach using thermal decomposition of Ni(II) acetylacetonate and Fe(III) acetylacetonate in oleylamine without further reducing agents. The analyses of powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy show that the as-synthesized Fe–Ni nanoparticles possess a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystalline structure and exhibit a polydispersed characteristic. The particle morphology and size distribution can be further controlled by introducing surfactants in the reaction system, and the final chemical composition also can be tuned to some extent by varying the initial molar ratios of metal precursors. Room temperature magnetic measurements reveal a ferromagnetic characteristic for the as-synthesized nanoparticles. An increased saturation magnetization has been observed with increasing Fe contents.

Abstract:Nanoparticles that self-assemble on a liquid-liquid interface serve as the building block for making heterodimeric nanostructures. Specifically, hollow iron oxide nanoparticles within hexane form colloidosomes in the aqueous solution of silver nitrate, and iron oxide exposed to the aqueous phase catalyzes the reduction of silver ions to afford a heterodimer of silver and hollow iron oxide nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, and SQUID were used to characterize the heterodimers. Interestingly, the formation of silver nanoparticles helps the removal of spinglass layer on the hollow iron oxide nanoparticles. This work demonstrates a powerful yet convenient strategy for producing sophisticated, multifunctional nanostructures.
Transformation of CuO Nanoparticles in the Aquatic Environment: Influence of Ph, Electrolytes and Natural Organic Matter

Abstract:Many studies have shown the effect of solution chemistry on the environmental behavior of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs), except CuO NPs. Here, we investigated the agglomeration, sedimentation, dissolution, and speciation of CuO NPs by varying pH, ionic strength, ionic valence, and natural organic matter (NOM). The results showed that as the pH moved away from 6, the size of CuO agglomerates decreased, along with the enhanced NP suspension stabilization, due to the increase of electrostatic repulsive force. Increasing ionic strength and valence intensified the agglomeration and sedimentation of CuO NPs because of the compression of electrical double layers. The presence of humic acid and citric acid enhanced the dispersion and stabilization of CuO NP suspension, but l-cysteine showed a different impact. Decreasing pH, increasing ionic strength and all NOM improved the dissolution of CuO NPs, but the divalent electrolyte (CaCl2) inhibited the Cu2+ release from CuO NPs compared to the monovalent electrolyte (NaCl). In addition, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis demonstrated that the presence of l-cysteine transformed more than 30% of CuO NPs to Cu(I)-cysteine by coordinating with thiol group. This study can give us an in-depth understanding on the environmental behavior and fate of CuO NPs in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:In the space of just a few years, nanotechnology has become a topical subject not only in academia, but also in the daily lives of people. In order to investigate the properties of natural nanoparticles (NNPs) and to obtain a better understanding of their environmental behaviour and impacts from a new perspective, transmission electron microscope (TEM), zeta potential analysis and time-resolved dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis were used to examine the main properties and aggregation kinetics of NNPs extracted from Chinese soils added to various concentrations of the electrolytes NaCl, CaCl2 and LaCl3. The NNPs that were less than 100 nm remained stable for 100 days. The classic Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) model partially revealed the aggregation behaviour of NNPs, in which ionic strength, composition and size may play important roles. The influence of hematite and natural organic matter (NOM) was demonstrated by aggregation kinetics and critical coagulation concentrations (CCC). The size of NNPs could also change the maximum total potential energy of interactions in the systems (V-T(h)). These factors make the aggregation of NNPs in electrolytes different from that of soil colloids and influence the environmental behaviour of NNPs.

Abstract:Natural iron oxides nanomaterials have important roles in biogeochemical processes. In this study, the effects of pH, natural organic matter, and cations on aggregation and sedimentation of natural goethite and artificial Fe3O4 nanoparticles in water were investigated to learn more about the environmental behaviors of engineered and natural nanomaterials and how they differ. In addition, a novel extended DLVO theory that considered steric, gravitational, and magnetic attraction forces concurrently was specifically developed to provide mechanisms explanations. Specifically, Fe3O4 NPs were more likely than bulk goethite to aggregate (because of magnetic attraction interactions) at low HA concentrations and disperse at high HA concentrations. Besides, goethite was less prone to settle with the same concentration of NaCl than Fe3O4 NPs, but the opposite trend was found for the same concentration of CaCl2 because of the difference in maximum net energy (barrier) and strong Ca2+ bridging effectiveness of goethite in CaCl2 solution. Statistical models were established to evaluate colloidal stability of the particles. XPS and molecular dynamics simulation results suggested that ions were adsorbed onto particles via ionic polarization and that the binding free energies at high coverage followed the order Ca2+ > Na+ > Cl- and presence of cation bridging between particles.
Heteroaggregation of different surface-modified polystyrene nanoparticles with model natural colloids

Abstract:This study investigated heteroaggregation of three surface-functionalized polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs), i.e. negatively charged unfunctionalized nanoparticles (Bare-PS) and carboxylated nanoparticles (COOH-PS), and positively charged amino-functionalized nanoparticles (NH2-PS), with two model natural colloids, positively charged hematite and negatively charged kaolin, respectively. Heteroaggregation was conducted at a constant natural colloid concentration and variable NP/colloid concentration ratios. Electrostatic interaction was the main mechanism driving the formation of heteroaggregates. In binary systems containing hematite and Bare-PS/COOH-PS, a charge neutralization – charge inverse mechanism was observed with the increase of PSNP concentration. At NP/hemetite concentration ratios much smaller or larger than the full charge neutralization point, the primary heteroaggregates were stable, while full charge neutralization induced the formation of large secondary heteroaggregates. Large aggregates were not observed in suspensions containing kaolin and NH2-PS, as highly positively charged NH2-PS reversed surface charges of kaolin at extremely low concentrations. Heteroaggregation between PSNPs and natural colloids with the same charge is unfavorable due to strong electrostatic repulsion. In the presence of electrolytes, homoaggregation and heteroaggregation both occurred, and homoaggregation of hematite played a key role when the concentration of PSNPs was low. The presence of Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM) could modify surface charges of nanoparticles, and thus affect heteroaggregation behaviors of the binary suspension. When SRNOM and electrolytes were both present, whether SRNOM inducing or hindering the stability of the binary system was a combined effect of NP/colloid concentration ratios, SRNOM concentrations, electrolyte types and ionic strength. Mechanisms extensively reported in homoaggregation such as steric hindrance and cation bridging effects between SRNOM and Ca2+ also stand for heteroaggregation. These results highlight the critical role of surface modification on the environmental behaviors of NPs, and will underpin our understanding of the fate and transport of NPs in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:The important role of natural organic matter (NOM)-Fe colloids in influencing contaminant transport, and this role can be influenced by the formation, aggregation, and particle deposition dynamics of NOM-Fe colloids. In this work, NOM-Fe colloids at different C/Fe ratios were prepared by mixing different concentrations of humic acid (HA) with 10 mg/L Fe(II) under anoxic conditions. The colloids were characterized by an array of techniques and their aggregation and deposition behaviors were examined under both anoxic and oxic conditions. The colloids are composed of HA-Fe(II) at anoxic conditions, while they are made up of HA-Fe(III) at oxic conditions until the C/Fe molar ratio exceeds 1.6. For C/Fe molar ratios above 1.6, the aggregation and deposition kinetics of HA-Fe(II) colloids under anoxic conditions are slower than those of HA-Fe(III) colloids under oxic conditions. Further, the aggregation of HA-Fe colloids under both anoxic and oxic conditions decreases with increasing C/Fe molar ratio from 1.6 to 23.3. This study highlights the importance of the redox transformation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) and the C/Fe ratio for the formation and stability of NOM-Fe colloids that occur in subsurface environments with anoxic-oxic interfaces.
Preparation and Characterization of Stable Dispersive Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract:Stable aqueous dispersive colloidal Ag nanoparticles were prepared by reducing silver nitrate with sodium borohydride in the presence of 3-mercaptopropionic acid. The formation process of the Ag nanoparticles was investigated by UV-Visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results show that the spherical and rodlike particles and aggregates are formed in the initial stage of the reaction, then the rodlike particles and aggregates are gradually decomposed into small Spherical particles, and the final obtained Ag nanoparticles with an average size of 8 nm are in uniform shapes and narrow size distribution, and the colloid remains stable for more than one month, which makes it convenient for use in practice. The presence of capping agent plays an extra role over nanoparticles stabilization and morphology.The presence of capping agent on the surface of Ag nanoparticle is confirmed by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is found that Ag nanoparticles are negatively charged in alkaline condition, whereas they are positively charged in acid condition. Electrosteric effect is responsible for their long-term stability.

Abstract:Dissolution of nanoparticles is an environmental interfacial process that affects the transformation of nanoparticles. Understanding the dissolution processes of nanoparticles is important to predict their fate in the aquatic environment. However, studying nanoparticle dissolution kinetics is still challenging since dissolution is usually coupled with nanoparticle aggregation. Here, we probed the dissolution process of Ag nanoparticles at the single-particle level by surface plasmon resonance microscopy. The single-particle imaging capability enabled us to classify Ag nanoparticles, measure the dissolution dynamics of single nanoparticles, and correlate the aggregation size with oxidation activity. Moreover, we studied the dual effect of natural organic matter on the dissolution of Ag nanoparticles and validated this result with real natural freshwater. Our study provides new insights into the dissolution of Ag nanoparticles, and this technique can be extended for other nanomaterials to evaluate their fate in aquatic environments.

Interactions between Nanoscale Zerovalent Iron and Silver Nanoparticles Control the Reactivity in Aqueous Environments

Abstract:The increasing production and broad application of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) have led to a substantial release of ENPs into natural systems. Despite their different utilization prospects, ENPs such as nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been co-found in the environment. This study comprehensively examined the effect of AgNPs on the reductive ability of NZVI, which was probed through the conversion of p -nitrophenol ( p -NP) to p -aminophenol ( p -AP). Electron microscopic and spectroscopic investigations and Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) calculations showed that the aggregation of NZVI with a low dose of AgNPs dramatically decreased the NZVI reactivity. In contrast, enhanced NZVI reactivity was observed when a high dose of AgNPs was used. The collision between self-assembled aggregates of AgNPs and NZVI can lead to the exposure of inner Fe(0), thereby improving the reductive ability of NZVI. The same behavior was observed for other nanosized (e.g., TiO 2 ) and microsized (e.g., quartz sand) particles, which suggests the predominance of physical processes in NZVI peeling. Further investigations showed that the presence of sulfate and humic acid enhanced the p -NP removal in the NZVI-AgNP suspension, in contrast to other groundwater constituents. Our findings provide a better understanding of potential ENP interactions, particularly in the context of groundwater remediation.
Oxidative Dissolution and the Aggregation of Silver Nanoparticles in Drinking and Natural Waters: The Influence of the Medium on the Process Development

Abstract:Currently, there are quite a few data on the ways silver nanoparticles get into the aquatic environment, on their subsequent dissolution in water, and on the release of toxic Ag+ ions. Differences in the experimental conditions hinder the determination of the basic regularities of this process. In this study, the stages of oxidative dissolution of AgNPs were studied, starting from the formation of silver hydrosol in deaerated solution, the reaction of silver with oxygen and with drinking and natural waters, the analysis of intermediate species of the oxidized colloidal particles, and the subsequent particle aggregation and precipitation, by optical spectroscopy, DLS, TEM, STEM, and EDX. In the presence of oxygen, silver nanoparticles undergo oxidative dissolution, which gives Ag+ ions and results in the subsequent aggregation of nanoparticles. The carbonate hydrosol loses stability when mixed with waters of various origin. This is due to the destruction of the electric double layer, which is caused by an increase in the solution's ionic strength and the neutralization of the charge of the metal core. The environmental hazard of the silver nanoparticle hydrosol would noticeably change and/or decrease when the nanoparticles get into natural waters because of their fast precipitation and because the major part of released Ag+ ions form poorly soluble salts with ions present in water.

Abstract:This paper investigated the effect mechanism of complex components (fulvic acid (FA), sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) and sodium nitrate (NaNO3)) on the aggregation kinetics of polyvinylpyrrolidone modified silver nanoparticles (PVP‐AgNPs) under UV irradiation. The results showed that FA and NaNO3 alone did not cause aggregation due to the high steric hindrance and/or electrostatic repulsive forces. In high concentration of SDBS solution (20 ~ 50 mM), the stability of PVP‐AgNPs was reduced by adsorbing SDBS on nanoparticle surface and replacing their PVP coatings. A mixed system of two pollutants had a synergistic effect on PVP‐AgNPs aggregation. In the mixed system of SDBS and FA, the interaction of SDBS and PVP‐AgNPs dominated the aggregation of PVP‐AgNPs. NaNO3 significantly improved the aggregation rate of PVP‐AgNPs in SDBS solution due to the charge neutralization effect of electrolyte. In 20 mg/L FA solution, the aggregation rate increased slightly with increasing NaNO3 concentration from 50 to 200 mM due to the charge neutralization effect, while the hydrodynamic diameters of PVP‐AgNPs increased linearly and rapidly to micrometer size because the spatial conformation of adsorbed FA became compact in high salinity solution. The calculation results of eDLVO theory were basically consistent with most of the experimental results.

Abstract:Suspended sediment (SS) is ubiquitous in natural waters and plays a key role in the fate of engineered nanomaterials. In this study, the effect of SS on the aggregation, settling, and dissolution of polyvinylpyrrolidone-coated silver nanoparticles (PVP-AgNPs) was investigated under environmentally relevant conditions. The heteroaggregation of AgNPs with SS was not observed at low ionic strength (≤0.01 M) due to high electrostatic repulsion and steric forces. At higher NaCl concentrations (0.1 and 0.3 M), PVP-AgNPs were found to attach onto the SS surface, and the formation of AgNP-SS heteroaggregates strongly promoted settling of PVP-AgNPs due to the overwhelming gravity force. PVP-AgNP dissolution was reduced after the addition of sediment to ultrapure water because the presence of sediment-associated dissolved organic matter (SS-DOM). The formation of an AgCl layer on PVP-AgNP surface in 0.01 M NaCl solution resulted in the minor effect of SS on AgNP dissolution. After addition of SS, the dissolved silver concentrations of PVP-AgNP increased in 0.1 and 0.3 M NaCl solution. The interactions of SS-DOM with AgNPs under different NaCl concentrations interfered the dissolution of AgNPs in sediment-laden water. This study provides new insight into the fate of AgNPs in sediment-laden water under various environmental conditions.

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) inevitably interact with iron minerals (IMs) after being released into aquatic environments, changing their transport and fate. In this study, batch heteroaggregation kinetics of four types of NPs, i.e., polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polystyrene (PS-Bare), amino-polystyrene (PS-NH 2 ), and carboxyl-polystyrene (PS-COOH), with two different IMs (hematite and magnetite) were conducted. We found that the heteroaggregation of NPs and IMs and the associated interfacial interaction mechanisms are both NPs-dependent and IMs-dependent. Specifically, the NPs had stronger heteroaggregation with hematite than magnetite; the heteroaggregation order of two IMs with NPs was PMMA > PS-NH 2 > PS-Bare > PS-COOH. Moreover, hydrogen bond, complexation, hydrophobic, cation-π, and electrostatic interaction were involved in the interfacial reaction between NPs and hematite, and electrons were transferred from the NPs to the hematite, causing the reduction of Fe 3+ into Fe 2+ . Furthermore, we first revealed that both pre-homoaggregation of NPs and IMs could affect their subsequent heteroaggregation, and the homoaggregates of IMs could be interrupted by PMMA or PS-COOH NPs introduction. Therefore, the emerging NPs pollution is likely to generate an ecological effect in terms of elemental cycles such as iron cycle. This work provides new insights into assessing the environmental transfer and ecological effects of NPs in aquatic environments.

Abstract:Oxidative dispersion has been widely used in regeneration of sintered metal catalysts and fabrication of single atom catalysts, which is attributed to an oxidation-induced dispersion mechanism. However, the interplay of gas-metal-support interaction in the dispersion processes, especially the gas-metal interaction has not been well illustrated. Here, we show dynamic dispersion of silver nanostructures on silicon nitride surface under reducing/oxidizing conditions and during carbon monoxide oxidation reaction. Utilizing environmental scanning (transmission) electron microscopy and near-ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy/photoemission electron microscopy, we unravel a new adsorption-induced dispersion mechanism in such a typical oxidative dispersion process. The strong gas-metal interaction achieved by chemisorption of oxygen on nearly-metallic silver nanoclusters is the internal driving force for dispersion. In situ observations show that the dispersed nearly-metallic silver nanoclusters are oxidized upon cooling in oxygen atmosphere, which could mislead to the understanding of oxidation-induced dispersion. We further understand the oxidative dispersion mechanism from the view of dynamic equilibrium taking temperature and gas pressure into account, which should be applied to many other metals such as gold, copper, palladium, etc. and other reaction conditions.
The Effect of Water Chemistry on Homoaggregations of Various Nanoparticles: Specific Role of Cl⁻ Ions.

Abstract:Colloidal behavior of various nanoparticles (NPs) could be quite different under the influence of complicated water chemistry. Homoaggregations of four types of nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated with a focus on the effects of electrolyte ions, pH, and natural organic matter (NOM). Results show that critical coagulation concentrations (CCCs) of NaCl and CaCl2 for anatase TiO2, rutile TiO2, or CeO2 NPs were all inversely proportional to the valence of cations, following the Schulze-Hardy Rule, and homoaggregations of the three NPs were similarly inhibited by the presence of NOM within pH 3-9. Although the homoaggregation of Ag NPs was also increased as the concentration or valence of cations increased, the relationship between CCC and valence of the cations was far away from the Schulze-Hardy Rule; moreover, NOM only slightly increased CCC of CaCl2 and surprisingly decreased CCC of NaCl for Ag NPs. Excessively-adsorbed Cl(-) on the formed Ag-AgCl colloidal nucleus was detected, which could increase the electronegativity of Ag NPs and thus limit the aggregation effect of chlorides and the dispersion effect of NOM as well. These results are expected to increase our knowledge on the colloidal behavior and fate of NPs in aquatic environments.
Aggregation of Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles: Effects of Ph, Electrolytes,and Organics.

Abstract:To better understand the fate and transport of ferrihydrite nanoparticles (FNPs), which carry many contaminants in natural and engineered aquatic environments, the aggregation of FNPs was systematically investigated in this study. The pH isoelectric point (pH:Ep), surface zeta potential, and particle size evolutions of FNPs were measured under varied aqueous conditions using dynamic light scattering (DLS). The influence of pH (5.0 +/- 0.1 and 7.0 +/- 0.1), ionic strength (IS), electrolytes (NaCl, CaCl2 and Na2SO4), and organics (humic acid, fulvic acid and CH3COONa) on the aggregation behaviors of FNPs were explored. Meanwhile, Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory was employed to better understand the controlling mechanisms of FNP aggregation. In the presence of sulfate, the surface charge of FNPs was neutralized under varied pH and ionic strength due to ion adsorption and FNPs phase transformation to schwertmannite based on FT-IR results. This phase transformation resulted in rapid aggregation in all water chemistries tested, whereas other salt species affected the aggregation primarily by ion adsorption and charge screening. Presence of increasing concentrations of the organic acids significantly shifted the pHiEp of FNPs (7.0 +/- 0.2) to lower pH (< 4.0) due to adsorption of organics on FNPs surfaces making them negatively charged. The adsorption of HA/FA inhibited FNP aggregation significantly while CH3COONa did not, due to different effects on steric and/or electrosteric interactions among FNPs by organics with varied pK(a) values and molecular weights. After accounting for the important effects of pH, electrolytes, and organics in modifying FNPs' surface charge, DLVO calculations agreed well with measured critical coagulation concentrations (CCC) values of FNPs at both pH 5.0 +/- 0.1 and 7.0 +/- 0.1 in the presence of NaCl. This study will hence be useful to better predict and control the fate and transport of FNPs in the presence of electrolytes and organics with different molecular weights, as well as the fate of the associated contaminants in natural and engineered systems.
Size-controlled syntheses and hydrophilic surface modification of Fe 3O4, Ag, and Fe3O4/Ag heterodimer nanocrystals

Abstract:High-quality, monodisperse, and size-controlled Fe3O 4, Ag, and bifunctional Fe3O4/Ag heterodimer nanocrystals (NCs) have been synthesized successfully. In the synthesis of Fe3O4 NCs, dodecanol was chosen as the substitute of 1,2-hexadecanediol and "size control" was achieved by simply adjusting the proportion among the ligands instead of utilizing seed-mediated growth. In the synthesis of Ag NCs, organometallic silver acetylacetonate (Agacac) was used as precursors and tunable particle size could be easily obtained by adjusting the reaction temperatures. By using different sized Fe3O4 NCs as seeds, Fe3O4/Ag heterodimer NCs with particle sizes tuned from 5 to 16 nm for Fe3O4 and 4 to 8 nm for Ag were successfully synthesized and superparamagnetism were maintained. We found that the size of Ag attached on the Fe3O4 NCs relied on the size of Fe3O4 seed. UV-vis absorption spectra and TEM investigations revealed that the bigger the Fe3O4 NCs seed used, the bigger the Ag NCs that were obtained from the heterodimer NCs. In addition, we demonstrated that all of these NCs were successfully transferred into water by surface modification with biocompatible carboxylic acid groups, which made them meet the basic requirement for biolabeling and biomedical applications. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2010.
