Abstract:Agricultural soil is gradually becoming a primary sink for metal -based nanoparticles (MNPs). The uptake and accumulation of MNPs by crops may contaminate food chain and pose unexpected risks for human health. Here, we investigated the fate and transformation of CuO nano particles (NPs) in the soil -rice system during the rice lifecycle. The results show that at the maturation stage, 1000 mg/kg CuO NPs significantly decreased redox potential by 202.75 triV but enhanced electrical conductivity by 497.07 mS/cm compared to controls. Moreover, the bioavailability of highest CuO NPs in the soil was reduced by 69.84% along with the plant growth but then was significantly increased' y 165% after drying -wetting cycles. Meanwhile, CuO and Cu coMbined with humic acid were transformed to Cu2S and Cu associated with goethite by X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. AdditiOnally, CuO NPs had an acute negative effect on the plant growth than bulk particles, which dramatically reduced the fresh weight of grains to 6.51% of controls. Notably, CuO NPs were found to be translocated from soil to plant especially to the chaff and promoted the Cu accumulation in the aleurone layer of rice using micro X-ray fluorescence technique, but could not reach the polished rice.

Abstract:Particulate organic matter (POM) is distributed worldwide in high abundance. Although insoluble, it could serve as a redox mediator for microbial reductive dehalogenation and mineral transformation. Quantitative information on the role of POM in the natural occurrence of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is lacking, but is needed to re-evaluate the sources of AgNPs in soils, which are commonly considered to derive from anthropogenic inputs. Here we demonstrate that POM reduces silver ions to AgNPs under solar irradiation, by producing superoxide radicals from phenol-like groups. The contribution of POM to the naturally occurring AgNPs is estimated to be 11–31%. By providing fresh insight into the sources of AgNPs in soils, our study facilitates unbiased assessments of the fate and impacts of anthropogenic AgNPs. Moreover, the reducing role of POM is likely widespread within surface environments and is expected to significantly influence the biogeochemical cycling of Ag and other contaminants that are reactive towards phenol-like groups.

Abstract:The wide use of metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) will inevitably lead to their release into soil, and consequently affect the quality and ecological functions of soil environments. In this study, two paddy soils with different properties were exposed to CuO NPs to evaluate the transformation of CuO NPs and their effects on soil properties and components. The results of single chemical extraction and X-ray absorption fine structure analysis showed that CuO NPs could release Cu ions once being applied into the flooding paddy soil and then progress toward the more stable forms (Cu2S and Cu(OH)(2) ). CuO NPs could change the soil properties by increasing the pH and Eh of the lower organic matter-soil rather than those of the higher organic matter-soil. Furthermore, we found that the 1000 mg/kg CuO NPs could accelerate the degradation or mineralization of the organic matter, as well as the Fe reduction process, by increasing the Fe(II) content by 293% after flooding for 60 days in the lower organic matter soil. The microbial biomass in both soils was severely inhibited by CuO NPs and the organic matter could partly mitigate the negative effects of CuO NPs.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are ubiquitous in soil, and their quantity and stability play important roles in the fate, transport and bioavailability of contaminants in the environment. In this research, four soil nanoparticles (SNPs) were extracted from typical soil of different regions in China. Three different kinds of natural organic matter (NOM) were subsequently added to suspensions of SNPs to determine the effects of NOM on the stability of SNPs. The critical coagulation concentration (CCC), one of the most important indicators of the stability of the colloidal suspension in electrolyte solutions, was measured. The increase in CCC values indicated that the stability of SNPs was enhanced by NOM; however, the stability varied with the different electrolytes, properties of SNPs and properties of NOM. A coating of NOM increased the negative charges on the surface of SNPs. Therefore, the electrostatic force had a greater effect on the stability of SNPs than the van der Waals force, which contributed to their stability. The effect of NOM on the stability of SNPs was more evident in electrolytes with a monovalent cation (Na+) than in those with a divalent (Ca2+) or trivalent cation (La3+). The NOM increased the stability of less stable SNPs in relation to the composition and properties of SNPs. Further research is required to understand better how the behaviour and fate of SNPs are affected by NOM in the environment.HighlightsThe effect of organic matter on the stability of soil nanoparticles is evaluated. Transformation of CuO Nanoparticles in the Aquatic Environment: Influence of Ph, Electrolytes and Natural Organic Matter

Abstract:Many studies have shown the effect of solution chemistry on the environmental behavior of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs), except CuO NPs. Here, we investigated the agglomeration, sedimentation, dissolution, and speciation of CuO NPs by varying pH, ionic strength, ionic valence, and natural organic matter (NOM). The results showed that as the pH moved away from 6, the size of CuO agglomerates decreased, along with the enhanced NP suspension stabilization, due to the increase of electrostatic repulsive force. Increasing ionic strength and valence intensified the agglomeration and sedimentation of CuO NPs because of the compression of electrical double layers. The presence of humic acid and citric acid enhanced the dispersion and stabilization of CuO NP suspension, but l-cysteine showed a different impact. Decreasing pH, increasing ionic strength and all NOM improved the dissolution of CuO NPs, but the divalent electrolyte (CaCl2) inhibited the Cu2+ release from CuO NPs compared to the monovalent electrolyte (NaCl). In addition, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis demonstrated that the presence of l-cysteine transformed more than 30% of CuO NPs to Cu(I)-cysteine by coordinating with thiol group. This study can give us an in-depth understanding on the environmental behavior and fate of CuO NPs in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:The rhizosphere is an essential pathway for the uptake of metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) by plant roots. However, the interaction between root exudates and MNPs is still unclear. In this study, we initially identified the major low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) in the rice root exudates using hydroponics. Then, the individual LMWOAs were added to CuO nanoparticle suspensions to investigate their effects on the environmental behavior of the MNPs. The results showed that both the variety and the concentration of LMWOAs impacted the aggregation, sedimentation, and dissolution of CuO nanoparticles (NPs). Almost all LMWOAs except succinic acid inhibited the aggregation of CuO NPs by enhancing the electrostatic repulsive force between NPs. The presence of citric and oxalic acids rather than lactic acid greatly improved the stability of CuO NP suspensions, but other acids showed a low promoting and high inhibiting effect on NP sedimentation. Moreover, all the LMWOAs from root exudates facilitated the dissolution of CuO NPs with a positive dose-dependent correlation, especially formic acid. Notably, citric acid, as the most abundant LMWOAs in rice root exudates, largely determined the aggregation, sedimentation, and dissolution of CuO NPs. This study provides a better understanding on NP–plant interactions in the rhizosphere.
Influence of Sulfur Fertilization on CuO Nanoparticles Migration and Transformation in Soil Pore Water from the Rice (oryza Sativa L.) Rhizosphere.

Abstract:The biogeochemical cycling of sulfur in soil is closely associated with the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals; however the influence of sulfur on the behavior of metal-based nanoparticles has not yet been studied. The influence of S fertilizer (S0 and Na2SO4) applied in paddy soils on CuO NPs behavior in soil pore water was explored in the present study. Synchrotron-based techniques were applied to investigate the migration and speciation transformation of CuO NPs in soil pore water colloids. The application of sulfur fertilizer increased the zeta potential of soil colloids from the rice rhizosphere region and reduced the size of the colloids. Sulfur fertilization decreased the concentration of Cu in soil pore water in the rice rhizosphere region. S0 fertilizer reduced the Cu concentration in soil colloids (by 55.8%-73.5%), while Na2SO4 increased the Cu concentration in soil colloids (by 173.8%-265.1%). Sulfur fertilization changed the spatial distribution of Fe3+ and Cu2+ in colloids, making these ions more likely to be aggregated on the edges of soil colloids. Speciation transformation of CuO NPs happened during the process of migration. The main Cu speciation in the soil colloids were CuO NPs, Cu-Cysteine, Cu2S and Cu-Citrate. Sulfur fertilization increased the proportion of Cu2S (by 40.5%) in soil pore water colloids from the rice rhizosphere region, while the proportion of CuO NPs was reduced (by 18.4%). Sulfur fertilization changed the morphology and elementary composition of colloids in soil pore water, thus influencing the migration of CuO NPs in the soil column through soil colloids.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely present in aquatic and soil environment, raising significant concerns about their impacts on creatures in ecosystem. While the toxicity of AgNPs on microorganisms has been reported, their effects on biogeochemical processes and specific functional microorganisms remain relatively unexplored. In this study, a 28-day microcosmic experiment was conducted to investigate the dose-dependent effects of AgNPs (10 mg and 100 mg Ag kg −1 soil) on nitrogen transformation and functional microorganisms in agricultural soils. The molecular mechanisms were uncovered by examining change in functional microorganisms and metabolic pathways. To enable comparison, the toxicity of positive control with an equivalent Ag + dose from CH 3 COOAg was also included. The results indicated that both AgNPs and CH 3 COOAg enhanced nitrogen fixation and nitrification, corresponding to increased relative abundances of associated functional genes. However, they inhibited denitrification via downregulating nirS , nirK , and nosZ genes as well as reducing nitrate and nitrite reductase activities. In contrast to high dose of AgNPs, low levels increased bacterial diversity. AgNPs and CH 3 COOAg altered the activities of associated metabolic pathways, resulting in the enrichment of specific taxa that demonstrated tolerance to Ag. At genus level, AgNPs increased the relative abundances of nitrogen-fixing Microvirga and Bacillus by 0.02 %–629.39 % and 14.44 %–30.10 %, respectively, compared with control group (CK). The abundances of denitrifying bacteria, such as Rhodoplanes , Pseudomonas , and Micromonospora , decreased by 19.03 % to 32.55 %, 24.73 % to 50.05 %, and 15.66 % to 76.06 %, respectively, compared to CK. CH 3 COOAg reduced bacterial network complexity, diminished the symbiosis mode compared to AgNPs. The prediction of genes involved in metabolic pathways related to membrane transporter and cell motility showed sensitive to AgNPs exposure in the soil. Further studies involving metabolomics are necessary to reveal the essential effects of AgNPs and CH 3 COOAg on biogeochemical cycle of elements in agricultural soil.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM) is an essential part of soil and plays an important role in many biochemical processes. Extraction amount and dispersibility of soil nanoparticles released from soils (both with and without the removal of NOM) were investigated in this study to evaluate the influence of NOM on the liberation of natural nanoparticles from soils. Extraction amount of nanoparticles released from the native soils was about 4–6 times more than those released from NOM-removed soils, indicating that the NOM in soils could enhance the release of natural nanoparticles from soils. After removal of soil NOM, the natural nanoparticles released have larger size and less negative zeta potentials. The aggregation results derived from dynamic light-scattering analysis (DLS) for 30 min showed that the natural nanoparticles released from NOM-removed soils had a more rapid aggregation, indicating that the removal of soil organic carbon would reduce the negative surface potentials between nanoparticles and thus induce the aggregation of nanoparticles.
Bioavailability and Translocation of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in the Soil-Rice Plant System.

Abstract:To determine the bioavailability and translocation of metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) in the soil-rice plant system, we examined the accumulation and micro-distribution of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), CuO NPs and CeO2 NPs (50, 100 and 500 mg/kg) in the paddy soil and rice plants under flooded condition for 30 days using single-step chemical extraction and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique combined with micro Xray fluorescence spectroscopy (mu-XRF). The results show that various MONPs changed the soil properties, especially the redox potential was enhanced to -165.33 to -75.33 mV compared to the control. The extraction efficiency of Zn, Cu and Ce in the paddy soil from high to low was EDTA, DTPA CaCl2 and DGT. Moreover, exposure to 500 mg/kg CuO NPs and CeO2 NPs induced the primary accumulation of Cu and Ce elements in rice roots as high as 235.48 mg Cu/kg and 164.84 mg Ce/kg, respectively, while the Zn concentration in shoots was up to 313.18 mg/kg under highest ZnO NPs with a 1.5 of translocation factor. The effect of MONPs on the plant growth was mainly related to the chemical species and solubility of MONPs. Micro-XRF analysis shows that Zn was mostly located in the root cortex while Cu was primarily accumulated in the root exodermis and few Ce distributed in the root. Pearson correlation coefficients indicate that only DTPA-extracted metals in soil were significantly and well correlated to the Zn, Cu and Ce accumulation in rice seedlings exposed to MONPs. Abstract:In the space of just a few years, nanotechnology has become a topical subject not only in academia, but also in the daily lives of people. In order to investigate the properties of natural nanoparticles (NNPs) and to obtain a better understanding of their environmental behaviour and impacts from a new perspective, transmission electron microscope (TEM), zeta potential analysis and time-resolved dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis were used to examine the main properties and aggregation kinetics of NNPs extracted from Chinese soils added to various concentrations of the electrolytes NaCl, CaCl2 and LaCl3. The NNPs that were less than 100 nm remained stable for 100 days. The classic Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) model partially revealed the aggregation behaviour of NNPs, in which ionic strength, composition and size may play important roles. The influence of hematite and natural organic matter (NOM) was demonstrated by aggregation kinetics and critical coagulation concentrations (CCC). The size of NNPs could also change the maximum total potential energy of interactions in the systems (V-T(h)). These factors make the aggregation of NNPs in electrolytes different from that of soil colloids and influence the environmental behaviour of NNPs.

Abstract:Naturally-occurring colloids and nanoparticles are crucial in transporting heavy metal contaminants in soil-water systems. However, information on particle-bound metals' size distribution and elemental composition in paddy soils under redox-fluctuation is scarce. Here, we investigated the mobilization of Cu, Cd, and Pb-containing nanoparticles and colloids in four contaminated soils with distinctive geochemical properties during reduction and subsequent re-oxidation. Using AF4-UV-ICP-MS and STEM-EDS, we observed that particle-bound metals were primarily associated with two sizes ranges: 0.3−40 kDa (F1) and 130 kDa−450 nm (F2), which mainly consisted of organic matter (OM), iron hydroxide and clay minerals. Cu and Pb were more likely bound to colloid than Cd. Colloidal Cu, Pb and Cd accounted for averages of 83.2%, 72.4% and 19.8% of their total concentration in solution (<0.45 μm) during soil reduction, and decreased during soil re-oxidation. This proportion was also positively correlated with aqueous pH and DOC but negatively correlated with Eh. Further quantitative analysis demonstrated that Cu/Cd positively correlated with OM at nanometric scale (F1). This study provides quantitative insights into the size, composition and abundance of polymetallic pollutant-carrying particles in paddy soils during redox fluctuation, and highlights the importance of nanometric interactions between OM and toxic cationic metals for their release.

Abstract:The numerous applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) lead to their spread in aquatic systems and the release of silver ions (Ag + ), which brings potential risks to environment and human health. Owing to the different toxicity, the mutual transformations between AgNPs and Ag + has been a hot topic of research. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous on the earth and almost participates in all the reactions in the nature. The previous studies have reported the roles of DOM played in the transformation between AgNPs and Ag + . However, different experiment conditions commonly caused contradictory results, leading to the difficulty to predict the fate of AgNPs in specific reactions. Here we summarized mechanisms of DOM-mediated AgNPs oxidation and Ag + reduction, and analyzed the effects of environmental parameters. Moreover, the knowledge gaps, challenges, and new opportunities for research in this field are discussed. This review will promote the understanding of the fate and risk assessments of AgNPs in natural water systems.

Abstract:Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are widely used as fungicides in agriculture. Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous contaminant in paddy soil. The present study was focused on the adsorption behavior of CuO NPs with regard to As as well as the characteristics of the microbial community changes in As-contaminated soil-rice systems in response to CuO NPs. The study found that CuO NPs could be a temporary sink of As in soil; a high dose of CuO NPs promoted the release of As from crystalline iron oxide, which increased the As content in the liquid phase. The study also found that the As bioavailability changed significantly when the dose of CuO NPs was higher than 50 mg kg-1 in the soil-rice system. The addition of 100 mg kg-1 CuO NPs increased the microbial diversity and the abundance of genes involved in As cycling, decreased the abundance of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing genes, and decreased As accumulation in grains. Treatment with 500 mg kg-1 CuO NPs increased the abundance of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing genes, decreased Fe plaques, and increased As accumulation in rice. The adverse effects of CuO NPs on crops and associated risks need to be considered carefully.

Abstract:Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using endophytic bacteria is a safe alternative to the traditional chemical method. The purpose of this research is to biosynthesize AgNPs using endophytic bacterium Bacillus endophyticus strain H3 isolated from onion. The biosynthesized AgNPs with sizes from 4.17 to 26.9 nm were confirmed and characterized by various physicochemical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in addition to an energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) profile. The biosynthesized AgNPs at a concentration of 40 mu g/mL had a strong antifungal activity against rice blast pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae with an inhibition rate of 88% in mycelial diameter. Moreover, the biosynthesized AgNPs significantly inhibited spore germination and appressorium formation of M. oryzae. Additionally, microscopic observation showed that mycelia morphology was swollen and abnormal when dealing with AgNPs. Abstract:Widespread usage of nanotechnology has increased the release of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) into the environment, which are mostly engineered. Agricultural soil is one of the most important sinks for MNPs. While numerous studies have focused on understanding the phytotoxicity of MNPs, and the extent and pathways of their accumulation in plants, the impacts of MNPs on soil health are only gaining attention recently. A comprehensive review summarizing the interactions of MNPs with soil is yet available. This review aims to fill the gap by evaluating the impacts of common MNPs on soil properties. Specifically, we examined the effects of MNPs on soil physical properties, the availability of plant nutrients and heavy metals from the perspective of food safety and security, as well as soil microbial ecology and microbial community associated with nutrient and carbon cycling. We underscored the impacts of environmental transformation of MNPs on soil health. Compared with soil physical and chemical properties, biological parameters of soil health are more susceptible to the impact of MNPs. Overall, the effects of MNPs and their transformed products on soil health vary with soils, MNPs, and exposure duration and dosage.
