Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM) is an essential part of soil and plays an important role in many biochemical processes. Extraction amount and dispersibility of soil nanoparticles released from soils (both with and without the removal of NOM) were investigated in this study to evaluate the influence of NOM on the liberation of natural nanoparticles from soils. Extraction amount of nanoparticles released from the native soils was about 4–6 times more than those released from NOM-removed soils, indicating that the NOM in soils could enhance the release of natural nanoparticles from soils. After removal of soil NOM, the natural nanoparticles released have larger size and less negative zeta potentials. The aggregation results derived from dynamic light-scattering analysis (DLS) for 30 min showed that the natural nanoparticles released from NOM-removed soils had a more rapid aggregation, indicating that the removal of soil organic carbon would reduce the negative surface potentials between nanoparticles and thus induce the aggregation of nanoparticles.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM) ubiquitously exists in natural waters and would adsorb onto the particle surface. Previous studies showed that NOM would alleviate the toxicity of nanomaterials, while the mechanism is seldom quantitatively interpreted. Herein, the effects of humic substances [Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA)] and biomacromolecules [alginate and bovine serum albumin (BSA)] on the aggregation and antimicrobial effects of silver sulfide nanoparticles (Ag2S-NPs) were investigated. The aggregation kinetics of Ag2S-NPs in electrolyte solutions were in agreement with the results based on Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The dynamic light scattering (DLS) results showed that the SRFA, SRHA, alginate and BSA molecules coated on the Ag2S-NPs surfaces. The NOM coating layer prevented salt-induced coagulation of Ag2S-NPs, and the effects of BSA and SRHA on Ag2S-NPs stabilizing were more obvious than that of SRFA and alginate. Flow cytometry analysis results suggested that BSA and SRHA were more effective on alleviating the Ag2S-NPs induced cell (Escherichia coli) membrane damage than SRFA and alginate. After interpreting the electrophoretic mobility (EPM) data of the NOM coated Ag2S-NPs by Ohshima's soft particle theory, it was found that the thickness of the NOM coating layers followed the orders of BSA > SRHA > alginate > SRFA. The E.coli cell membrane damage level was negatively correlated with the thickness and softness of the coating layer. NOM coating may physically alleviate the contact between NPs and E. coli cells and thus attenuate the extent of cell membrane damage caused by the NP-cell interaction. This work provides a new perspective for quantitatively interpreting the influence of NOM on the environmental behaviors and risks of nanomaterials.

Abstract:This work investigated the role of natural organic matter (NOM) in the environmental processes of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) and the uptake and accumulation of AgNP in wheat. Different NOMs (Suwannee River humic acids [SRHA], fulvic acid [FA]) and Ag elements (Ag-(0) and Ag+) were incubated in a hydroponic media for 15 days. The results showed that the NOM (10 mg C L-1) altered the dissolution, stabilization, uptake and accumulation of AgNP. The dissolution of AgNP declined in the presence of NOM. Compared with FA, the dissolved Ag+ decreased much more from 0.30 mg L-1 to 0.10 mg L-1 in the presence of SRHA. The fluorescence quenching results indicated that SRHA exhibited stronger binding to Ag+ than that of FA, and the quenching constants Ksv were 0.1309 (SRHA) and 0.0074 (FA), respectively. C-O, C-H, C-O-C, and Me-OH were involved in the interaction between NOM and AgNP. The NOM decreased the accumulated content of Ag in wheat. Hence, NOM alleviated the inhibition of AgNP to wheat growth. SRHA reduced the Ag content of wheat roots approximately 3-fold. These results clearly indicated the importance of NOM on altering the behavior, fate and toxicity of AgNP in an environment. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are ubiquitous in soil, and their quantity and stability play important roles in the fate, transport and bioavailability of contaminants in the environment. In this research, four soil nanoparticles (SNPs) were extracted from typical soil of different regions in China. Three different kinds of natural organic matter (NOM) were subsequently added to suspensions of SNPs to determine the effects of NOM on the stability of SNPs. The critical coagulation concentration (CCC), one of the most important indicators of the stability of the colloidal suspension in electrolyte solutions, was measured. The increase in CCC values indicated that the stability of SNPs was enhanced by NOM; however, the stability varied with the different electrolytes, properties of SNPs and properties of NOM. A coating of NOM increased the negative charges on the surface of SNPs. Therefore, the electrostatic force had a greater effect on the stability of SNPs than the van der Waals force, which contributed to their stability. The effect of NOM on the stability of SNPs was more evident in electrolytes with a monovalent cation (Na+) than in those with a divalent (Ca2+) or trivalent cation (La3+). The NOM increased the stability of less stable SNPs in relation to the composition and properties of SNPs. Further research is required to understand better how the behaviour and fate of SNPs are affected by NOM in the environment.HighlightsThe effect of organic matter on the stability of soil nanoparticles is evaluated. Abstract:Sludge is an integral part in the migration pathway of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from manufacture to the terrestrial environment. However, the detailed information on the role of natural organic matters (NOMs) remains limited. In this study, the sludge generated from coagulation of wastewater spiked with AgNPs (denoted as sludgeC-AgNPs) was taken as the model. Effects of humic acid (HA), alginate (AA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the release amount, dynamics and speciation of silver from the sludgeC-AgNPs were investigated by a series of leaching experiments. The results showed that HA, AA and BSA in the leaching solution could enhance the silver release from the sludgeC-AgNPs. The concentrations of the dissolved and colloidal silver in the BSA solution were the highest at the initial stage of dynamic leaching. The controlling step of the silver release was internal diffusion in the HA and AA solution, while the release of dissolved silver was controlled by both chemical reaction and internal diffusion in the BSA solution. In addition, the released colloidal silver fractions in the BSA solution contained more particles with size >50 nm compared with the HA and AA solutions. The results suggested that the properties of NOMs may be the key factor affecting the transfer of AgNPs from the sludge to the terrestrial environment.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM) readily interacts with nanoparticles, leading to the formation of NOM corona structures on their surface. NOM corona formation is closely related to the surface coatings and bioavailability of nanoparticles. However, the mechanism underlying NOM corona formation on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) remains largely unknown due to the lack of effective analytical methods for identifying the changes in the AgNP surface. Herein, the separation ability of biased cyclical electrical field-flow fractionation (BCyElFFF) for same-sized polyvinyl pyrrolidone-coated and poly(ethylene glycol)-coated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with different electrophoretic mobilities was evaluated under various electrical conditions. Then, the mechanism behind the NOM corona formation on these AgNP surfaces was elucidated based on the changes in the elution time and off-line characterization of the collected fractions during their elution time in a BCyElFFF run. Finally, the survival rates of E. coli exposed to polyvinyl pyrrolidone-coated and poly(ethylene glycol)-coated AgNPs with or without NOM collected during repeated BCyElFFF runs were observed to increase with increasing NOM concentration, clearly demonstrating the negative effect of NOM corona structures on the bioavailability of AgNPs. These findings highlight the powerful separation and isolation ability of BCyElFFF in studying the transformation and fate of nanoparticles in aqueous environments.
NOM Mitigates the Phytotoxicity of AgNPs by Regulating Rice Physiology, Root Cell Wall Components and Root Morphology.

Abstract:Natural organic matter (NOM) affects the environmental behaviors of AgNPs, which may change their phytotoxicity to plants. However, more evidence can be provided to illustrate how NOM influences AgNPs-induced phytotoxicity. In this study, using rice (Oryza sativa) as a model, the effects of NOM, Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) and fulvic acid (FA), on the dissolution and phytotoxicity of AgNPs were investigated. Silver ions decreased in both AgNPs and AgNO3 solution in the presence of NOM, and the effect of SRHA was stronger than FA. Image-XRF (iXRF) results showed that Ag mainly remained in the root rather than the shoot of rice seedling exposed to AgNPs. NOM mitigated the negative effects of AgNPs and AgNO3 on rice with lower germination inhibition rate, less chlorophyll reduction, more relative biomass and less O2•- content. Moreover, NOM improved root cell viability according to FDA fluorescent dye as well as maintained the normal root morphology. Interestingly, the neutral sugars content from pectin, hemicellulose 1, hemicellulose 2 and cellulose of root cell wall in AgNPs and AgNO3 treatments differed from the control, while it was close to the regular content in AgNPs/AgNO3+SRHA/FA groups, which implied that NOM regulated the changes. Besides, SRHA led to less germination and less relative biomass than FA due to different chemical characters. Thus, NOM needs to be considered when studying the phytotoxicity of AgNPs.

Abstract:The wide application of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has inevitably led to their release into the natural aquatic environment. Natural organic matter (NOM) is ubiquitous and would influence the fate and effects of these nanoparticles in such aquatic environments. Here we demonstrate that NOM plays an important role in the bioaccumulation kinetics and tissue distribution of AgNPs in zebrafish. In the presence of humic acid and fulvic acid, the uptake rates of AgNPs decreased while the depuration rates of AgNPs increased. As a result, the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of AgNPs in the entire body of the zebrafish was reduced. AgNPs were mainly taken up by the zebrafish via oral ingestion and were greatly accumulated in the liver, intestine and gill. In the intestine, NOM effectively inhibited the AgNPs from penetrating the cell membranes into internal tissues and also suppressed the disintegration and dissolution of AgNPs in gastrointestinal fluid, thereby decreasing the absorption of Ag by zebrafish. This research underlines the significance of incorporating the effects of NOM into predictive models for accurately assessing the toxicity and ecological risks of nanoparticles in natural aquatic environments.
Influence of natural organic matter on the transformation of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles and their ecotoxic potency in vitro

Abstract:Increased use and production of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) lead to an elevated risk of their diffuse dispersion into the aquatic environment and increased concern on unknown effects induced by their release into the aquatic ecosystem. An improved understanding of the environmental transformation processes of NPs of various surface characteristics is hence imperative for risk assessment and management. This study presents results on effects of natural organic matter (NOM) on the environmental transformation and dissolution of metal and metal oxide NPs of different surface and solubility properties in synthetic freshwater (FW) with and without NOM. Adsorption of NOM was evident on most of the studied NPs, except Sb and Sb2O3, which resulted in the formation of negatively charged colloids of higher stability and smaller size distribution compared with the same NPs in FW only. The dissolution rate of the NPs in the presence of NOM correlated with the strength of interactions between the carboxylate group of NOM and the particle surface, and resulted in either no (Mn, Sb, ZnO NPs), increased (Co, Sn NPs) and decreased (Ni, NiO, Sb2O3, Y2O3 NPs) levels of dissolution. One type of metal NP from each group (Mn, Ni, Sn) were investigated to assess whether observed differences in adsorption of NOM and dissolution would influence their ecotoxic potency. The results showed Mn, Ni, and Sn NPs to generate intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a time and dose-dependent manner. The extent of ROS generation in FW was similar for both Mn and Ni NPs but higher for Sn NPs. These findings are possibly related to interactions and infiltration of the NPs with the cells, which lead to redox imbalances which could induce oxidative stress and cell damage. At the same time, the presence of NOM generally reduced the intracellular ROS generation by 20-40% for the investigated NPs and also reduced cytotoxicity of Sn NPs, which can be attributed to the stronger interaction of carboxylate groups of NOM with the surface of the NPs.
Unraveling the Mutual Effect of Different Molecular Weights Natural Organic Matter Fractions and Heavy Metals on Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles Aggregation

Abstract:Ferrihydrite is an iron mineral that widely exists in the environment as nanoparticles. The geochemical behavior of ferrihydrite nanoparticles (FNPs) can largely influence the fate of the correlated elements. Aggregation is the key factor to affects the geochemical fate of FNPs. Previous studies proved that the aggregation of FNPs is often influenced by natural organic matter (NOM), and the aggregation behavior was largely different with the different MW of NOM. However, little research considers the effect of the coexistence of heavy metal ions, which always interact with FNPs and NOM. Here, we studied the effects of different MWs of NOM on the aggregation and adsorption behaviors of FNPs in the presence of Cr(VI) and Cu(II), respectively. In Cr(VI) system, the presence of NOM with different MWs stabilized the FNPs, and the stabilization effect was higher with the increase of concentration and MW of NOM. However, in the presence of Cu(II), the addition of NOM first promoted the aggregation of FNPs and then inhibited, which was attributed to the change of surface charge from positive to negative. Furthermore, the adsorption and excitation-emission matrices parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) analysis results indicated that the adsorption properties of NOM were highly dependent on the humic substance components and MW distribution, and would affect the adsorption of NOM and Cr(VI)/ Cu(II) on FNPs surface. These results can help us better understand the interaction mechanism of FNPs, NOM and heavy metals from the molecular level, and predict the fate of FNPs and heavy metals in the environment.

Abstract:Ferrihydrite nanoparticles (Fh NPs) are ubiquitous in natural environments. However, their colloidal stability, and fate and transport behavior are difficult to predict in the presence of heterogeneous natural organic matter (NOM) mixtures. Here, we investigated the adsorption and aggregation behavior of Fh NPs exposed to NOM fractions with different molecular weights (MW). The NOM fraction with MW < 3 kDa destabilized the NPs, resulting in accelerated aggregation even at high C/Fe mass ratios, whereas higher MW NOM fractions imparted better colloidal stability with increasing MW and C/Fe ratio. Despite differences in the functional group composition of the bulk (dissolved) NOM fractions, all NOM fractions produced similar adsorbed layer compositions on the NPs, suggesting minimal contribution of chemical properties to the distinctive aggregation behavior. Rather, the higher adsorbed mass and larger size of the higher MW fractions were key factors in stabilizing the NPs through steric repulsion, whereas the lowest MW fraction had low adsorbed mass and was unable to counter electrostatic patch-charge attraction when the NPs are positively charged. This mechanistic understanding helps us predict the transport and fate of Fh NPs and the associated contaminants in natural environments with varying NOM compositions.
Effect of Decomposed Rice Straw Solution on AgNP Uptake by Rice Roots

Abstract:Decomposed rice straw solution was used as amendment of organic matter to investigate effects of natural organic matter ( NOM) on AgNP phyto?availability. AgNP uptake rate decreased with increasing levels of total organic car?bon ( TOC, 0-20 mg·L-1 ) and then tended to level off when TOC rose beyond 20 mg·L-1 till 80 mg·L-1 in concentra?tion. Analysis of the dynamic process of AgNP in the solution demonstrates that dissolution of AgNP was inhibited by NOM and decreased by 27?5%-95?5% in a dose?dependent manner as against the CK. Obviously the amendment of NOM leads to a reduction of the concentration of silver ion dissolved in the exposure medium and consequently a lower AgNP uptake rate of the crop. Meanwhile, the NOM tended to promote aggregation of AgNP, thus expanding the size of AgNP particles, and making them hard to be absorbed by rice. In addition, composition of NOM in molecular weight would also affect Ag?NP uptake. NOM low in molecular weight (<3 kDa) was found to have an effect on AgNP uptake comparable to that the pristine NOM did, indicating that the fraction of low molecular weight NOM plays an important role in AgNP uptake by rice roots.
Impacts of Morphology, Natural Organic Matter, Cations, and Ionic Strength on Sulfidation of Silver Nanowires

Abstract:Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are being widely utilized in an increasing number of consumer products, which could release silver to aquatic environments during the use or washing process, and have received growing concerns on their potential risks to bio-organisms and humans. The present study demonstrated that AgNWs mainly experienced direct oxysulfidation by reacting with dissolved sulfide species (initial S2- concentration at 1.6 mg/L) to produce silver sulfide nanostructures under environmentally relevant conditions. Granular Ag2S nanoparticles were formed on the surface of the nanowires. The sulfidation rate constant (kAg) of AgNWs was compared with those of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at different particle sizes. It was found that the kAg positively correlated with the specific surface areas of the silver nanomaterials. Natural organic matter (NOM) suppressed the sulfidation of AgNWs to different extents depending on its concentration. Divalent cations (Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions) substantially accelerated the sulfidation rates of AgNWs compared to monovalent cations (Na+ and K+ ions). At the same ionic strengths, Ca2+ ions displayed the highest promoting effect among the four metallic ions.
Photoreduction and stabilization capability of molecular weight fractionated natural organic matter in transformation of silver ion to metallic nanoparticle

Abstract:Photoinduced reduction of silver ion (Ag(+)) to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in the transformation and transport of engineered AgNPs and Ag(+) in aquatic environments. DOM is a mixture of natural polymers with wide molecular weight (MW) distribution, and the roles of specific components of DOM in the photoreduction of Ag(+) to AgNPs are still not understood. In this study, MW fractionated natural organic matter (Mf-NOM) were investigated for their roles on the photoreduction process and stabilization of the formed AgNPs. This photoinduced reduction process depends highly on pH, concentration of Ag(+) and NOM, light quality, and the MW of Mf-NOM. Monochromatic radiation and light attenuation correction suggested that the difference of Mf-NOM on reduction was mainly ascribed to the differential light attenuation of Mf-NOM rather than the "real" reductive ability. More importantly, compared with low MW fractions, the high MW Mf-NOMs exhibit drastically higher capability in stabilizing the photosynthesized AgNPs against Ca(2+)-induced aggregation. This finding is important for a better understanding of the differential roles of Mf-NOM in the transformation and transport of Ag(+) and engineered AgNPs in DOM-rich surface water.

Abstract:The numerous applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) lead to their spread in aquatic systems and the release of silver ions (Ag + ), which brings potential risks to environment and human health. Owing to the different toxicity, the mutual transformations between AgNPs and Ag + has been a hot topic of research. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous on the earth and almost participates in all the reactions in the nature. The previous studies have reported the roles of DOM played in the transformation between AgNPs and Ag + . However, different experiment conditions commonly caused contradictory results, leading to the difficulty to predict the fate of AgNPs in specific reactions. Here we summarized mechanisms of DOM-mediated AgNPs oxidation and Ag + reduction, and analyzed the effects of environmental parameters. Moreover, the knowledge gaps, challenges, and new opportunities for research in this field are discussed. This review will promote the understanding of the fate and risk assessments of AgNPs in natural water systems.

Effects of natural organic matter and sulfidation on the flocculation and filtration of silver nanoparticles

Abstract:Surface properties of engineered silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are strongly affected by environmental transformation. The fate and transport of these transformed AgNPs is largely unknown and cannot be fully explained by the traditional Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek (DLVO) theory. The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in the composition and surface properties of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) capped AgNPs after environmental transformation and their subsequent effects on the flocculation and filtration of these transformed AgNPs during water treatment processes. To study the aggregation and deposition behavior of the transformed particles, PVP-AgNPs exposed to humic acid (HA) and/or sulfidation were characterized, followed by separate flocculation, granular media filtration, and quartz crystal microgravimetry (QCM) experiments. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that HA exposure modified the original PVP capping via adsorption and/or ligand exchange and that sulfidation stripped the PVP from the particle surface as a result of the formation of silver sulfide. Sulfidation thereby reduced the stability of PVP-AgNPs in self-aggregation but enhanced the mobility of AgNPs in granular media filtration and quartz collector deposition. Without unbound macromolecules in the background solution, polymers on the particle surface largely prevent self-aggregation but allow favorable clean bed deposition. This difference between the effects on self-aggregation and granular media filtration is in contrast to traditional DLVO theory. QCM yielded two types of results, the initial rate of deposition and the ultimate deposition, and both gave insights into expected filtration behavior.

Abstract:The numerous applications of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) leads to their spread in aquatic systems and the generation of silver ions (Ag+), which brings potential risks to environments and human health. Because Ag+ is the main toxicant source of AgNPs, the exploration of mutual transformations between AgNPs and Ag+ could help to evaluate the environmental risks in the process. Dissolved organic matters (DOMs) are ubiquitous on the earth and have high chemical activities. DOM could oxidize AgNPs to Ag+, and reduce Ag+ to AgNPs as well. Due to the different reaction conditions, previous studies always generate opposite conclusions in the DOM mediated transformations between AgNPs and Ag+, which causing the difficulty to predict the transformation in specific reactions. Here we summarized mechanisms of AgNPs oxidation and Ag+ reduction regulated by DOMs, and analyzed the environmental effects on DOM regulating the reactions between AgNPs and Ag+. The objective of review is to raise new perspectives to above mentioned processes, and provide references for the risk assessments while AgNPs entering into aquatic environments.
Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on the Microstructure, Non-Isothermal Crystallization Behavior and Antibacterial Activity of Polyoxymethylene

Abstract:Silver (Ag) nanoparticles were synthesized by a facile route in the presence of oleic acid and n-propylamine. It was shown that the average primary size of the as-synthesized Ag nanoparticles was approximately 10 nm and the surface of as-synthesized Ag nanoparticles was capped with monolayer surfactants with the content of 19.6%. Based on as-synthesized Ag nanoparticles, polyoxymethylene (POM)/Ag nanocomposites were prepared. The influence of Ag nanoparticles on non-isothermal crystallization behavior of POM was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Jeziorny, Jeziorny-modified Avrami, Ozawa, Liu and Mo, Ziabicki and Kissinger models were applied to analyze the non-isothermal melt crystallization data of POM/Ag nanocomposites. Results of half time (t1/2), crystallization rate parameter (CRP), crystallization rate function (K(T)), kinetic parameter (F(T)), the kinetic crystallizability at unit cooling rate (GZ) and the crystallization activation energy (∆E) were determined. Small amounts of Ag nanoparticles dispersed into POM matrix were shown to act as heterogeneous nuclei, which could enhance the crystallization rate of POM, increase the number of POM spherulites and reduce POM spherulites size. However, the higher loading of Ag nanoparticles were easily aggregated, which restrained POM crystallization to some degree. Furthermore, the POM/Ag nanocomposites showed robust antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
Transport of Environmental Natural Organic Matter Coated Silver Nanoparticle Across Cell Membrane Based on Membrane Etching Treatment and Inhibitors

Abstract:Environmental natural organic matters (NOMs) have great effects on the physicochemical properties of engineering nanoparticles, which may impact the transport of nanoparticles across plasma membrane and the cytotoxicity. Therefore, the kinetics, uptake pathway and mass of transporting into A549 cell membrane of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) coated with citric acid (CA), tartaric acid (TA) and fulvic acid (FA) were investigated, respectively. CA, FA and TA enhanced the colloidal stability of AgNPs in culture medium and have greatly changed the surface plasmon resonance spectrum of AgNPs due to the absorption of CA, FA and TA on surface of AgNPs. Internalizing model showed that velocity of CA-, TA- and FA-nAg transporting into A549 cell were 5.82-, 1.69- and 0.29-fold higher than those of the control group, respectively. Intracellular mass of Ag was dependent on mass of AgNPs delivered to cell from suspension, which obeyed Logistic model and was affected by NOMs that CA-and TA- nAg showed a large promotion on intracellular mass of Ag. The lipid raft/caveolae-mediated endocytosis (LME) of A549 cell uptake of AgNPs were susceptible to CA, TA and FA that uptake of CA-, TA- and FA-nAg showed lower degree of dependent on LME than that of the control (uncoated AgNPs). Actin-involved uptake pathway and macropinocytosis would have less contribution to uptake of FA-nAg. Overall, transmembrane transport of NOMs-coated AgNPs differs greatly from that of the pristine AgNPs.
