Abstract:A new method to modify excessively titled fiber gratings (Ex-TFGs) with 20 nm gold nanoparticles (GNPs) through 3-mercapt-otrimethoxysilane(MPTMS) was proposed. By monitoring the wavelength shift of Ex-TFGs for every modified step and using the scanning electron microscope (SEM), it proves that GN Ps are firmly combined on the surface of Ex-TFGs. Finally, by using different concentration of NaCl solutions to calibrate the refractive index (RI) sensitivity, we demonstrated that the sensitivity of the 81 degrees Ex -TFG get an improvement increasing from similar to 150nm/R IU to similar to 160nm/RIU.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fiber refractive index (RI) sensor based on an excessively tilted fiber grating (ExTFG) immobilized by large-size plasmonic gold nanoshells (GNSs). The GNSs are covalently linked on ExTFG surface. Experimental results demonstrate that both the intensity of the transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes of ExTFG are significantly modulated by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of GNSs due to the wide-range absorption band. The wavelength RI sensitivities of the TM and TE modes in the low RI range of 1.333-1.379 are improved by similar to 25% and similar to 14% after GNSs immobilization, respectively, and the intensity RI sensitivities are similar to 599%/RIU and similar to 486%/RIU, respectively.

Abstract:The dual resonant peaks of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) have been prepared by depositing the polyelectrolyte multilayer films composed of salt-containing poly(diallyldimethyl- ammonium chloride) (PDDA) and salt-containing poly(sodium-p- styrenesulfonate) (PSS). The multilayered polyelectrolyte films of PDDA/PSS were alternately assembled on the surface of the LPFG via electrostatic layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly approach. The sensing performance of the dual resonant peaks of the LPFG to nanofilms has been further evaluated. The experimental results demonstrated that the optimal sensitivities of the left resonant peak and the right resonant peak in the dual resonant peaks were as high as 52.79 nm/bilayer and 56.09 nm/bilayer, respectively, which were approximately 128 times and 136 times that of another single resonant peak in sequence. Finally, the reason for the emergence of the dual resonant peaks and the corresponding response mechanism to nanofilms were further analyzed and discussed theoretically. These findings are very beneficial for exploring the application of LPFGs in many fields such as biochemical sensing, drug screening, food detection and so on.
Study on spectral and refractive index sensing characteristics of etched excessively tilted fiber gratings

Abstract:We investigated the spectral and refractive index (RI) sensing characteristics of the excessively tilted fiber grating (Ex-TFG) with different cladding diameters. The Ex-TFG is inscribed in standard single-mode fiber, and the cladding reduces from 125 μm to around 15 μm by the chemical etching method. Experimental results show that the number of cladding modes decreases, and the spacing of adjacent resonance peaks becomes larger and larger with the reduction of the cladding diameter in the observed wavelength range of 1250-1650 nm. The average RI sensitivity in the index region of 1.33-1.38, the one near 1.33, and the one at around 1.38 of the etched Ex-TFG with a diameter of 15 μm is ∼6.3, ∼5.3, and ∼6.67 fold compared to those of the no-etched Ex-TFG, respectively. Also, the RI sensing performances of the etched Ex-TFG with a diameter smaller than 30 μm are better than those of the Ex-TFG inscribed in SM1500 (4.2 μm/80 μm) fiber in the index region of 1.33. The proposed micronano Ex-TFG has higher RI sensitivity and a more compact structure in biosensing applications, compared to the standard Ex-TFGs and Ex-TFGs inscribed in SM1500 fiber.

Abstract:The present paper analyzes the sensor's basic principle of the bare tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) and surface plasmon resonance sensor (SPR) that deposited nanoscale gold-coating on the surface of the cladding. We simulated the transmission spectrums and some order cladding mode of TFBG in different concentration solutions by Integration and optical fiber grating software OptiGrating. So by the graphic observation and data analysis, a preliminary conclusion was got that in a certain sensing scope, the cladding modes of TFBG shift slightly to right with the increasing the solution refractive index(SRI),and the relation between resonance peak caused by the coupling of core mode and a certain cladding mode and the SRI was linear. Then the 45 nm thick gold coating was deposited on the surface of the TFBG cladding in a small-scale sputtering chamber KYKY SBC-12, and thermal field scanning electron microscopy presents that the effect of gold-coating was satisfactory to a certain extent in terms of microscopic level. The refractive index(RI) sensing experiments of different concentration solutions of NaCI, MgCI2, CaCI2 were carried out using bare and gold deposited TFBG. The RI sensing characteristics of both bare and gold deposited TFBGs respectively were studied by experiments. Meanwhile, it proved the conclusion that the cladding modes of TFBG drifted to right gradually when the SRI was increasing and the relations between resonance peak caused by the coupling of core mode and a certain cladding mode and the SRI were linear. And by quantitative analysis, we know that SPR sensor with the deposited namoscale gold layer on the surface of cladding enhanced the RI sensitivity dramatically by 2 to 500 nm RIU-1 which is 200 to 300 times larger than that of the bare tilted fiber Bragg grating approximately. The degrees of linear fittings of resonance peak caused by the coupling of core mode and a certain cladding mode and SRI of bare and gold-coating deposited SPR sensor are very good and both of them reach up to more than 0. 99.

Abstract:An excessively tilted fiber grating (ExTFG) Sagnac interference loop refractive index sensor based on vernier effect (VE) is proposed. Utilizing the basic principle of the optical VE, a polarization-maintaining fiber Sagnac interferometer with a free spectral range (FSR) of 1.52 nm and a Sagnac interferometer composed of ExTFG with an FSR of 1.36 nm are theoretically designed and fabricated. The vernier spectrum is obtained by superimposing two optical paths by cascading. Experimental results show that the characteristics of the vernier envelope are easy to identify, and the refractive index sensitivity reaches - 1286.40 nm/RIU through vernier amplification, improved similar to 8.46 and similar to 10.55 times than that of the TM and TE polarizations of the ExTFG sensors, respectively, which is in good agreement with the theoretically calculated result. The output spectrum of the sensor is relatively stable, and the sensor has the advantages of simple structure, convenient fabrication, and strong resistance of temperature crosstalk, leading to promising application in the fields of biochemical and biomedical detections.

Abstract:in this paper, it has been shown that the refractive index (RI) sensitivity of higher-order cladding modes of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) can be enhanced significantly with the deposition of gold nanoparticle over the surface. A detailed numerical study is being accomplished in this work. Initially, the sensitivity of higher-order cladding modes is evaluated with a dedicated multi-layer numerical model of FBG. Subsequently, thin nanoparticles of gold are being considered over the surface of FBG. A Four-layer model is employed for the computation of sensitivity of cladding modes of FBG. Almost a '2.5' fold enhancement of sensitivity is found with the utilization of gold nanoparticles. This proposed FBG sensors can be utilized in highly sensitive chemical and biological sensing applications.
Graphene-coated Tilted Fiber-Bragg Grating for Enhanced Sensing in Low-Refractive-index Region

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a method to significantly extend the sensitive window of tilted fiber-Bragg grating (TFBG) into low-refractive-index region with the integration of graphene coating. The coupling between cladding modes of TFBG and graphene coating results in an obvious modification of the cladding-mode envelope, which provides a sensitive regime relying on graphene's complex refractive index. Interacting the graphene-coated TFBG with various aqueous solutions, we observe strongly enhanced sensitivity in the low-refractive-index region of 1-1.428, which is about 10-fold extended from that of the unloaded TFBG. The graphene-coated TFBGs present great potentials in the biochemical sensing window.

Abstract:Utilizing three-dimensional vectorial electromagnetic simulation, we propose a new refractive index sensing mechanism based on Fano resonance enhanced two-photon-absorption induced luminescence (TPL). The TPL from gold nanodisk heptamer (GNDH), which is affected by the refractive index of surrounding material, is used as an example to demonstrate the sensing mechanism facilitated by Fano resonance. The sensitivity of our method is about one order of magnitude better than the conventional refractive index sensing strategy employing plasmonic Fano resonance, while the size of the sensing probe can be further reduced at the same time.Sketch map of the TPL sensing platform. Gold-Film-Thickness Dependent SPR Refractive Index and Temperature Sensing with Hetero-Core Optical Fiber Structure

Abstract:A simple hetero-core optical fiber (MMF-NCF-MMF) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensing structure was proposed. The SPR spectral sensitivity, full width of half peak (FWHM), valley depth (VD), and figure of merit (FOM) were defined to evaluate the sensing performance comprehensively. The effect of gold film thickness on the refractive index and temperature sensing performance was studied experimentally. The optimum gold film thickness was found. The maximum sensitivities for refractive index and temperature measurement were obtained to be 2933.25 nm/RIU and -0.91973 nm/°C, respectively. The experimental results are helpful to design the SPR structure with improved sensing performance. The proposed SPR sensing structure has the advantages of simple structure, easy implementation, and good robustness, which implies a broad application prospect.
Refractive index sensitivity of gold double concentric nanoshells: Tuning the intensity discrepancy of two-band plasmonic absorption

Abstract:Refractive index sensitivity of gold double concentric nanoshells based on plasmonic absorption intensity has been investigated by using the quasistatic calculation. Increasing the environmental dielectric constant leads to the absorption intensity of vertical bar omega(-)(-)> mode gets intense, whereas the absorption intensity of vertical bar omega(+>)(-) mode fades down. Thus the intensity discrepancy between the two-band plasmonic absorption is greatly dependent on the environmental dielectric constant, which could be used in the refractive index sensing. Furthermore, the sensing ability can be improved by decreasing the thickness of the inner gold shell or increasing the thickness of the outer gold shell. A mechanism based on inter-shell plasmonic coupling and local electric field dependent surface charge density was investigated to illuminate the different effects from inner and outer gold shell on the refractive index sensitivity. Abstract:We propose refractive index sensors based on Ag-metalized nanolayer in microstructured optical fibers. The surface plasmon resonance modes and the sensing properties are theoretically analyzed using finite element method (FEM). In the calculation, Drude–Lorentz model is used to describe the Metal Dielectric constant. The calculation results show that the sensitivity of Ag-metalized SPR sensor can reach 1500nm/RIU corresponding to a resolution of 6.67×10−5RIU. Comparing with conventional detecting material-Au under the same structure, the sensitivity and 3dB bandwidth of our device are better.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a cascaded tilted fiber Bragg grating（TFBG） for enhanced refractive index sensing. The TFBG is UV-inscribed in series in ordinary single-mode fiber（SMF） and reduced-diameter SMF with the same tilt angle, and then excites two sets of superposed spectral combs of cladding modes. The cascaded TFBG with total length of 18 mm has a much wider wavelength range over 100 nm and narrower wavelength separation than that of a TFBG only in the SMF, enabling an enlarged range and a higher accuracy of refractive index measurement. The fabricated TFBG with the merits of enhanced sensing capability and temperature self-calibration presents great potentials in the biochemical sensing applications.

Abstract:The core refractive index sensitivity of a gold nanotube was investigated by calculating the shift of local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). It was found that the core refractive index sensitivity can be improved by reducing the wall thickness or the surrounding refractive index. The sensitivity increases exponentially with decreasing wall thickness, but increases linearly with decreasing surrounding refractive index. This multi-factor controlled sensitivity of gold nanotube enlarges the ability of optimizing the refractive index sensors. The physical origin of this tunable refractive index sensitivity of gold nanotube was also investigated based on the plasmon hybridization and repulsive effects on the restoring force of plasmon oscillation. This physical mechanism can be used for designing core–shell metallic nanostructures for effective LSPR chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:The tilted fiber grating (TFG) is a special grating whose grating planes are slanted or blazed relative to the fiber axis. These tilts in the planes break the cylindrical symmetry of the fiber, strongly enhance the light coupling from the fiber core to cladding, and resonantly excite a large number of cladding modes. Then, the TFGs with rich spectral information and strong evanescent field leaking out open up a multitude of opportunities for the enabled light-matter interaction by functionalizing their surface with nanomaterials. In this review, we briefly analyze the architectures, coupling mechanisms, spectral properties, and implementations of different TFGs, including weakly tilted Bragg grating with small tilt angle, radiated TFG with 45° tilt angle, excessively TFG with large tilt angle, etc. Further, the sensing enhancement and spectral modulation by integrating layered nanomaterials on TFGs are discussed, which could be considered as a promising strategy to break the limitation of fiber's one-dimensional structure and promote the light-matter interaction for enhanced and extended applications in optical parameter modulation and sensing.

Abstract:A novel bio-molecular nanostructured sensor composed of Au spherical nanoshell and gain-assisted silica-core has been proposed and investigated theoretically, which shows a superior performance compared to the existing structured sensor. Using quasi-static approximation calculation, it is found that the scattering efficiency and the quality factor of SPR can be enhanced greatly by introducing proper amount of gain. The simulated results demonstrate that our designed Au spherical nanoshell and gain-assisted silica-core can obtain as high as 166.7nm/RIU for the sensitivity of refractive index, and the sensors' figure of merit is enhanced 2000 times nearly compared to that of g=0, which indicates that the designed spherical core–shell sensors have the powerful ability to detect a subtle change in the concentration of its background medium.

Abstract:Based on the mode coupling theory of a tilted fiber grating (TFBG), the spectral characteristics of a TFBC under different ambient refractive indexes are studied by the Optigrating software. The results show that when the ambient refractive index is less than the refractive index of the cladding mode, both the core mode and the cladding mode of the TFBG exist; in contrast, when the ambient refractive index is larger than or equal to the refractive :index of the cladding mode, only the core mode exists and the cladding mode disappears. The experimental results of this TFBG in distilled water, anhydrous ethanol, safflower oil, peanut oil and soybean oil are consistent with the corresponding simulation results. These research results have certain guiding significance for the real-time leakage monitoring of pipelines full of liquids with larger refractive indexes.
High sensitivity refractive index sensor based on tilted fiber Bragg gratings

Abstract:We demonstrate fabrication of tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) with dif-ferent tilt angles for the measurement of surrounding refractive index (SRI). High or-der cladding modes has been found to disappear gradually, with their resonance wave-length linearly increasing as SRI increases. The measured index sensitivity is higher than 500 nm/RIU.By optimizing the tilt angle of the grating,the proposed optical fiber sensor can be used for SRI measurements in different index range.

Abstract:Local plasmatic resonance existing around nanoscale metallic structures is closely related to the refractive index of the surrounding media. Gold Lamellae layers embedded in gratings are ideal to populate the plasmatic resonances locally with much higher concentration than the simple gratings, leading to enhanced sensitivity to the testing materials. Based on our earlier success in replicating dielectric lamellae layers, this paper reports our further work in converting the dielectric lamellae layers into gold ones and the study of their optical property as refractive index sensors. To prove the local surface plasmatic resonance be responsible for absorbing the light, the gratings without the lamellae layer were also tested for comparison. Both numerical simulation using the finite difference time domain method and optical measurements have demonstrated the enhanced sensitivity by the gratings with lamellae layers, although structural optimization is still needed. With the further improvement in both structural configuration, material and nanofabrication technique, it is believed that the proposed lamellae layers should be a promising candidate for highly sensitive environmental sensors.
