Abstract:The Faster-Than-Nyquist(FTN)signaling-based scheme is a high spectral efficiency transmission scheme for largecapacity optical communication systems.This paper reviews the latest FTN signaling-based transmission schemes in the world,such as cascaded multi-modulus blind equalization FTN,digital FTN and Soft Output FTN(SOFTN).The cascaded multimodulus blind equalization FTN can effectively suppress noise and inter-channel crosstalk,the digital FTN can effectively simplify the system structure and the SOFTN has the highest spectral efficiency.It analyzes and compares in detail their performances and principles,which can be used as the basis for the design of future long-range large-capacity fiber-optic communication systems.

Abstract:This study explores the potential of long-wave infrared free-space optical (FSO) transmission that leverages multilevel signals to attain high spectral efficiency. The FSO transmission system consists of a directly modulated-quantum cascade laser (DM-QCL) operating at 9.15 μm and a mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector. To fully understand the system, we conduct measurements on the DM-QCL chip and MCT detector and assess the overall amplitude response of the DM-QCL, MCT detector, and all electrical components. We apply various signals, including on-off keying (OOK), 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), 6-level PAM (PAM6), and 8-level PAM (PAM8) to maximize the bit rate and spectral efficiency of the FSO transmission. Through a two-dimensional sweeping of the laser bias current and MCT detector photovoltage, we optimize the transmission performance. At the optimal operation point, the FSO system achieved impressive results which are up to 6 Gbaud OOK, 3.5 Gbaud PAM4, 3 Gbaud PAM6, and 2.7 Gbaud PAM8 signal transmissions, with a bit error rate performance below 6.25% overhead hard decision-forward error correction limit when the DM-QCL operates at 10 °C. We also evaluate the eye diagrams and stability of the system to showcase its remarkable transmission performance. Our findings suggest that the DM-QCL and MCT detector-based FSO transceivers offer a highly competitive solution for the next generation of optical wireless communication systems.

Abstract:Spectrum efficient data transmission is of key interest for high capacity optical communication systems considering the limited available bandwidth. Transmission of the high speed signal with higher-order modulation formats within the Nyquist bandwidth using coherent detection brings attractive performance advantages. However, high speed Nyquist signal generation with high order modulation formats is challenging. Electrical Nyquist pulse generation is restricted by the limited sampling rate and processor capacities of digital-to-analog convertor devices, while the optical Nyquist signals can provide a much higher symbol rate using time domain multiplexing method. However, most optical Nyquist signals are based on direct detection with simple modulation formats. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of high speed all optical Nyquist signal generation based on Sinc -shaped pulse generation and time-division multiplexing with high level modulation format and full-band coherent detection. Our experiments demonstrate a highly flexible and compatible all optical high speed Nyquist signal generation and detection scheme for future fiber communication systems.

Abstract:Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signal achieves higher spectral efficiency and capacity compared to Nyquist signal due to its smaller pulse interval or narrower subcarrier spacing. Shannon limit typically defines the upper-limit capacity of Nyquist signal. To the best of our knowledge, the mathematical expression for the capacity limit of FTN non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (NOFDM) signal is first demonstrated in this paper. The mathematical expression shows that FTN NOFDM signal has the potential to achieve a higher capacity limit compared to Nyquist signal. In this paper, we demonstrate the principle of FTN NOFDM by taking fractional cosine transform-based NOFDM (FrCT-NOFDM) for instance. FrCT-NOFDM is first proposed and implemented by both simulation and experiment. When the bandwidth compression factor $\alpha$ is set to $0.8$ in FrCT-NOFDM, the subcarrier spacing is equal to $40\%$ of the symbol rate per subcarrier, thus the transmission rate is about $25\%$ faster than Nyquist rate. FTN NOFDM with higher capacity would be promising in the future communication systems, especially in the bandwidth-limited applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the high-speed free-space optical (FSO) transmission over 1 km using 20 Gbit/s advanced coherent quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals. The constellation diagram and the bit error rate (BER) are measured. The receiving sensitivity of the FSO transmission is about-23.9 dBm at the BER of 3.8x10(-3).

Afterwards we present the principle of coherent optical Nyquist single carrier (SC) systems with frequency domain channel estimation and time domain equalization (FDTDE) with nonlinear compensation scheme coordinated. With this technique, Terabit polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 32 quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) superchannel with Nyquist pulse shaping is generated and transmitted experimentally.

Abstract:Super-Nyquist, also known as Fast-than-Nyquist (FTN), signal generation based on optical or electrical spectrum shaping methods has been demonstrated to be an efficient scheme for future high-capacity transmission systems. Super-Nyquist signal demodulations based on maximum a posteriori (MAP) or maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) on receiver side have been demonstrated in 100G, 200G and 400G systems, which enables PDM-QPSK transmission with 4bit/s/Hz net spectral efficiency (SE) at lower OSNR requirement and longer transmission distance. Further studies also show the highly filtering-tolerant advantage of the super-Nyquist signal when using the 9-QAM-based multi-modulus equalization. This feature is quite useful for signals transmission under the aggressive optical filtering in multiple reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) transmission link. In this paper, we review the newly reported super-Nyquist experiments using the optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ). We directly recover the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. We first successfully transmitted 100-GHz-grid, 20 channels single-carrier 440-Gb/s super-Nyquist 9-QAM-like signal over 3600-km ultra-large effective-area fiber (ULAF) at record a net SE of 4b/s/Hz (after excluding the 7% hard-decision FEC overhead). The highly filtering-tolerant performance of the 9-QAM liked super-Nyquist signal is also experimentally demonstrated. Using this scheme, we then successfully transmit 10 channels 440-Gb/s signal over 3000-km ULAF and 10 cascaded ROADMs with 100-GHz-grid based on the single-carrier ETDM 110-GBaud QPSK. It is the highest baud rate of all-ETDM signal reported with the highest net SE at this baud rate for PDM-QPSK signal.
On Merits of Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling in the Finite Blocklength Regime

Abstract:We identify potential merits of faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime. A unique aspect of FTN signaling is that it can increase the blocklength by packing more data symbols within the same time and frequency to yield strictly higher number of independent signaling dimensions than that of Nyquist rate signaling. Using the finite-blocklength information theory, we provide tight bounds on the maximum channel coding rate (MCCR) of FTN signaling for any finite time-bandwidth product. The merits are categorized into two operating regions of FTN, i.e., when the time-acceleration factor of FTN, $\tau$, is above or below a certain threshold $\tau_{0}$. When $\tau > \tau_{0}$, FTN has both higher channel capacity and MCCR than that of Nyquist rate signaling, when the utilized pulse shape is non-sinc. Since the issues associated with the ideal sinc pulse only get exacerbated when packets are short, the benefit of FTN becomes more significant in the FBL regime. On the other hand, when $\tau < \tau_{0}$, the channel capacity is fixed but MCCR of FTN can continue to increase to a certain degree, thereby reducing the gap between the capacity and MCCR. This benefit is present regardless of the utilized pulse shape, including the ideal sinc-pulse, and is unique to the FBL regime. Instead of increasing MCCR for fixed block error rates, FTN can alternatively lower the block error rates for fixed channel coding rates. These results imply that FTN can lower the penalty from limited channel coding over short blocklength and can improve the performance and reliability of short packet communications.

Abstract:The paper is devoted to the study of signals obtained as a solution of the optimization task. This approach can be used in Faster-Than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling to provide extremely high transmission rates. However, an increase in transmission rate results in the strong intersymbol interference (ISI), affecting energy efficiency, especially for commonly used square-root-raised-cosine pulses. The main advantage of optimal signal is in controlled ISI level for different rates and pulse durations. We consider application of Viterbi Algorithm for optimal FTN signals reception. Using the Viterbi algorithm for receiving signals with increased duration and intersymbol interference provides close to potential BER performance, while symbol rate is higher the Nyquist limit. The paper provides the comparison of spectral and time characteristics for the optimal and root-raised-cosine pulses for different cases (pulse durations, roll-off factors).

Abstract:We have proposed a frequency reshaping and compensation scheme for FTN (Faster-Than-Nyquist) CAP (Carrierless Amplitude and Phase modulation) signal based on machine learning for the first time in this paper. The cascaded post equalizer consists of 2 stages. The first stage digital signal processing (DSP) is a Deep Neural Network (DNN), then LMS post-equalization is conducted as the second stage offline DSP. Through this method, we successfully demonstrated a data rate of 1.12Gbit/s FTN CAP 9QAM modulation over 1meter free space transmission with bit error rate (BER) below 7% FEC threshold of 3.8x10(-3). Compared to the traditional FTN CAP modulation without DNN, the proposed method would increase the data rate by approximately 100 Mbps, leading to an improvement of system capacity of 9.8%. The experimental results clearly validate the proposed cascaded two stage DNN-LMS (C2S DNN-LMS) can be a promising solution for future high speed VLC system.

Abstract:We demonstrate 4x128Gb/s Faster-than-Nyquist 16-QAM WDM signal transmission with heterodyne detection using signal-signal beat interference cancellation. The overall BER achieves 2.7x10(-3) (< 7% HD-FEC) after 80km SSMF transmission. The net spectral efficiency is as high as 4.04bit/s/Hz for one polarization.

Abstract:Faster-than-Nyquist non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (FTN-NOFDM) is robust against the steep frequency roll-off by saving signal bandwidth. Among the FTN-NOFDM techniques, the non-orthogonal matrix precoding (NOM-p) based FTN has high compatibility with the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), in terms of the advanced digital signal processing already used in OFDM. In this work, by dividing the single band into multiple sub-bands in the NOM-p-based FTN-NOFDM system, we propose a novel FTN-NOFDM scheme with adaptive multi-band modulation. The proposed scheme assigns different quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) levels to different sub-bands, effectively utilizing the low-pass-like channel and reducing the complexity. The impacts of sub-band number and bandwidth compression factor on the bit-error-rate (BER) performance and implementation complexity are experimentally analyzed with a 32.23-Gb/s and 20-km intensity modulation-direct detection (IM-DD) optical transmission system. Results show that the proposed scheme with proper sub-band numbers can lower BER and greatly reduce the complexity compared to the conventional single-band way.

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrated generation and transmission of 114 Gbaud and 126 Gbaud faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) discrete Fourier transform-spread (DFT-spread) quadrature phase shift keying orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (QPSK-OFDM) with 88-Gsa/s sampling rate digital-to-analog converters (DACs) experimentally. It is the first time to realize 400G FTN DFT-spread QPSK-OFDM signal per optical carrier for metro and regional applications, which will be a solution for network operators to address the issue of increasing bandwidth derived from the rapid popularization of mobile Internet and the wide application of IoT (Internet of Things technology). Delay-and-add filter (DAF) is adopted to realize frequency shaping at the transmitter to keep higher portions of energy of signal at low frequencies, which makes the OFDM much more robust to strong filtering effect. After pre-equalization, bit error rate (BER) performance of 114 GBaud and 126 GBaud FTN DFT-spread QPSK-OFDM has been significantly improved, and maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) shows a better effect than binary decoding in the aspect of against the inter symbol interference (ISI) introduced by spectrum compression. The effective bit rate of dual polarization 126 Gbaud FTN DFT-spread QPSK-OFDM which is generated with 88 GSa/s sampling rate is 410.08 Gb/s, to the exclusion of all overhead including TSs, cyclic prefix (CP), and 20% forward error correction (FEC) coding. We successfully transmit 8 × 400 Gbit/s FTN DFT-spread QPSK-OFDM signal generated from 88 Gsa/s sampling rate DAC over 420 km single mode fiber (SMF) with the BER under 2.4 × 10 −2 .

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of high bit rate optical frequency shift-keying transmitter. Base on the periodic notch spectral properties of Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer and the carrier suppressing functionality of Mach-Zehnder modulator, a high-speed optical FSK signal can be simply generated with another phase modulator and a single wavelength laser source. The transmission characteristics of this FSK signal are investigated under varying dispersion management. Simulated results show that 40Gb/s FSK signal gives only 1dB penalty after 80 km SMF transmission link under the post-compensation management scheme.
