Abstract:Orthogonal time division multiplexing (OrthTDM) interleaves sinc-shaped pulses to form a high baud-rate signal, with a rectangular spectrum suitable for multiplexing into a Nyquist WDM (N-WDM)-like signal. The problem with generating sinc-shaped pulses is that they theoretically have infinite durations, and even if time bounded for practical implementation, they still require a filter with a long impulse response, hence a large physical size. Previously a method of creating chirped-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) pulses with a chirped arrayed waveguide (AWG) filter, then converting them into interleaved quasi-sinc pulses using dispersive fiber (DF), has been proposed. This produces a signal with a wider spectrum than the equivalent N-WDM signal. We show that a modification to the scheme enables the spectral extent to be reduced for the same data rate. We then analyse the key factors in designing an OrthTDM transmitter, and relate these to the performance of a N-WDM system. We show that the modified transmitter reduces the required guard band between the N-WDM channels. We also simulate a simpler scheme using an unchirped finite-impulse response filter of similar size, which directly creates truncated-sinc pulses without needing a DF. This gives better system performance than either chirped scheme.

Abstract:Spectrum efficient data transmission is of key interest for high capacity optical communication systems considering the limited available bandwidth. Transmission of the high speed signal with higher-order modulation formats within the Nyquist bandwidth using coherent detection brings attractive performance advantages. However, high speed Nyquist signal generation with high order modulation formats is challenging. Electrical Nyquist pulse generation is restricted by the limited sampling rate and processor capacities of digital-to-analog convertor devices, while the optical Nyquist signals can provide a much higher symbol rate using time domain multiplexing method. However, most optical Nyquist signals are based on direct detection with simple modulation formats. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of high speed all optical Nyquist signal generation based on Sinc -shaped pulse generation and time-division multiplexing with high level modulation format and full-band coherent detection. Our experiments demonstrate a highly flexible and compatible all optical high speed Nyquist signal generation and detection scheme for future fiber communication systems.
A Novel Scheme for Generation of Optical Dark Return-to-Zero Label Signals

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate binary optical dark return-to-zero (RZ) signals with tunable duty cycle and extinction ratio is proposed, through modifying the process of precoding, modulating and coding. The optical dark return-to-zero signals are easily generated only by using a dual-arm Mach-Zehnder LiNbO3 modulator along with an electrical signal time-delay device. It is demonstrated experimentally that the optical dark return-to-zero signals can be directly measured by a conventional binary intensity modulation-direct detection (IM-DD) receiver. When the electrical signal time-delay device at 2.5 Gbit/s is adjusted, the changes of optical spectra, the bit-error rate curves, and the eye diagrams of the optical dark return-to-zero signal for duty of cycles 0.25, 0.35, 0.60 and 0.80 are obtained experimentally. Moreover, optical dark return-to-zero signals generated by this novel scheme can be used as labels, in optical label switched networks.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme to generate eight-level electrical signals for a high-speed 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (64QAM) optical signal. The required optical signal-to-noise ratio at a bit-error rate of 2 x 10-3 for the single- (56.4 Gb/s) and dual-polarization (112.8 Gb/s) return-to-zero 64QAM is 21 and 26.5 dB, respectively.
Breaking the Baud Rate Ceiling of Electro-Optic Modulators Using Optical Equalization Technique

Abstract: This study presents an effective optical equalization technique for generating ultrahigh baud rate signals. The equalization technique was demonstrated using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM) with two-phase shifters having different bandwidths, which can be achieved by adjusting the structural design of the modulator or by incorporating varying bias voltages. When the two phase shifters are driven by appropriately sized driving signals, their partially offsetting response significantly reduces the rise and fall times of the output signal. The experiments were conducted using silicon DDMZMs without digital signal processing (DSP). In an experiment utilizing a low-speed silicon modulator, the on-off keying (OOK) modulating speed was improved from 30 to 90 Gbaud. In an experiment utilizing a high-speed silicon modulator, the OOK modulating speed was improved from 100 to 128 Gbaud, which approached the limit of our testing system. This remains the highest baud rate achieved by an all-silicon modulator without DSP. This technique breaks the baud rate ceiling of the modulator and has the potential to enable silicon modulators to operate at 200 Gbaud and beyond. The versatility of this method extends to a wide range of optoelectronic platforms, encompassing thin-film lithium niobate and indium phosphide modulators.

Abstract:In this letter, together with the transmitter configuration, a novel modulation code format named carrier-suppressed nonreturn-to-zero (CSNRZ) is proposed. Unlike the conventional nonreturn-to-zero code (NRZ), return-to-zero (RZ) and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (CSRZ) signals, this optical signal has reverse-phase optical amplitude in the periods corresponding to 0 bits comparing to 1 bits. With an additional transform module at the receiver side, this reverse-phase optical power can reduce the transmission power penalty due to fiber nonlinearity. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the generation, the detection and the performance evaluation of a novel return-to-zero frequency shift keying (RZ-FSK) format for 40 Gb/s transmission. Non-return-to-zero (NRZ) FSK signal is generated by using two continues-wave (CW) lasers, one Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and one Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZDI). A RZ-FSK signal is successfully generated by cascading a dual-arm MZM, which is driven by a sinusoidal voltage at half of the bit rate. The demodulation can be simply achieved on 1 bit rate through one MZDI or an array waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer with balanced detection. By numerical simulation, two types of frequency modulation schemes using MZM or PM, and impact of the frequency tone spacing (FTS) of the generated FSK signal are discussed. The proposed scheme shows that the novel frequency modulation format offers a few transmission advantages comparing with than that of the other traditional modulation formats, such as RZ and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK), under varying dispersion management. The performance analysis of RZ-FSK signal in a 4 × 40 Gb/s WDM transmission system is introduced. We experimentally demonstrate, transparent wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and in a highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNDSF) for a 40 Gb/s RZ-FSK signal, clearly validating the feasibility of all optical signal processing of high-speed RZ-FSK signal. Moreover, we investigate the receiver power penalty for the RZ-FSK signal after a 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission link with matching dispersion compensating fiber (DCF), under the post-compensation management scheme. Since the frequency modulation format is orthogonal to intensity modulation and vector modulation (polarization shift keying), it can be employed in the context of the combined modulation format to decrease the data rate or enhance the symbol rate. It can - - also be utilized in the orthogonal label-switching as the modulation format for the payload or the label.

Abstract:A novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce the channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering. The spectrum of the generated super-Nyquist 9-QAM signal is much more compact compared with regular Nyquist QPSK signal. Therefore, only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM channel multiplexing. By using the 64-GSa/s high speed DAC, 32-GBaud super-Nyquist 9-QAM signal is generated within 25-GHz grid for quad-carrier 400G channels. We successfully generate and transmit 4 channels quad-carrier 512-Gb/s super-Nyquist 9-QAM-like signal within 100-GHz grid over 2975-km at a net SE of 4b/s/Hz (after excluding the 20% soft-decision FEC overhead). Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel and simple method to generate a dark return-to-zero (RZ) pulse with tunable pulsewidth and extinction ratio by using a dual-arm LiNbO3 intensity modulator. Our experimental results show that this dark RZ pulse signal can be used in a 10-Gb/s optical packet switching system as an optical label. In addition, we demonstrate that this dark RZ label can be easily erased using the gain saturation effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier.

Abstract:Digital signal processing is the core functional block in beyond-100G transmission systems with a high symbol rate and/or high spectral efficiency. We review recent progress on high symbol rate signal generation and detection, and corresponding advanced algorithms for signal equalization and compensation at the transmitters (Tx) and the receivers (Rx), respectively. Thanks to the joint Tx-side optical pre-equalization (pre-EQ) and Rx-side partial response maximum likelihood sequence estimation, significant performance improvement can be achieved by reducing the penalty caused by bandwidth limitations of the optical and electronic components. A joint pre-EQ and look-up table predistortion technique is also reviewed in this paper, which is demonstrated to be an effective method for mitigating devices' nonlinearity impairment. We exemplify how these advanced algorithms enable high symbol rate beyond-100G transmission systems with signal generation based on either electronic time-division multiplexing or digital-to-analog converters.

Abstract:A 640 Gbit/s NRZ OTDM signal has been successfully generated for the first time by format conversion of a 640 Gbit/s OTDM signal from RZ to NRZ. First, a coherent 640 Gbit/s OTDM RZ signal is generated by wavelength conversion of the original incoherent OTDM signal utilizing Kerr switching in a highly nonlinear fiber. Second, RZ-to-NRZ format conversion is achieved in a specially designed silicon microring resonator with FSR of 1280 GHz, Q value of 638, high extinction ratio and low coupling loss to optical fiber. A 640 Gbit/s NRZ OTDM signal with very clear eye-diagram and narrower bandwidth than both the original incoherent 640 Gbit/s and the wavelength converted coherent 640 Gbit/s RZ OTDM signals has been obtained. Bit error ratio measurements show error free (<10(-9)) performance at a received power of -30 dBm for all the OTDM channels of the 640 Gbit/s NRZ signal, with very low power penalty (<0.5 dB) and improved dispersion tolerance compared to the wavelength converted RZ case.

Abstract:All optical method is considered as a promising technique for high symbol rate Nyquist signal generation, which has attracted a lot of research interests for high spectral-efficiency and high-capacity optical communication system. In this paper, we extend our previous work and report the fully experimental demonstration of polarization-division multiplexed (PDM) all-optical Nyquist signal generation based on Sinc -shaped Nyquist pulse with advanced modulation formats, fiber-transmission and single-receiver full-band coherent detection. Using this scheme, we have successfully demonstrated the generation, fiber transmission and single-receiver full-band coherent detection of all-optical Nyquist PDM-QPSK and PDM-16QAM signals up to 125-GBaud. 1-Tb/s single-carrier PDM-16QAM signal generation and full-band coherent detection is realized, which shows the advantage and feasibility of the single-carrier all-optical Nyquist signals.

Abstract:Super-Nyquist, also known as Fast-than-Nyquist (FTN), signal generation based on optical or electrical spectrum shaping methods has been demonstrated to be an efficient scheme for future high-capacity transmission systems. Super-Nyquist signal demodulations based on maximum a posteriori (MAP) or maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) on receiver side have been demonstrated in 100G, 200G and 400G systems, which enables PDM-QPSK transmission with 4bit/s/Hz net spectral efficiency (SE) at lower OSNR requirement and longer transmission distance. Further studies also show the highly filtering-tolerant advantage of the super-Nyquist signal when using the 9-QAM-based multi-modulus equalization. This feature is quite useful for signals transmission under the aggressive optical filtering in multiple reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) transmission link. In this paper, we review the newly reported super-Nyquist experiments using the optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ). We directly recover the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. We first successfully transmitted 100-GHz-grid, 20 channels single-carrier 440-Gb/s super-Nyquist 9-QAM-like signal over 3600-km ultra-large effective-area fiber (ULAF) at record a net SE of 4b/s/Hz (after excluding the 7% hard-decision FEC overhead). The highly filtering-tolerant performance of the 9-QAM liked super-Nyquist signal is also experimentally demonstrated. Using this scheme, we then successfully transmit 10 channels 440-Gb/s signal over 3000-km ULAF and 10 cascaded ROADMs with 100-GHz-grid based on the single-carrier ETDM 110-GBaud QPSK. It is the highest baud rate of all-ETDM signal reported with the highest net SE at this baud rate for PDM-QPSK signal.

Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent works in 100 Gb/s signal generation and processing. A high-speed 100 Gb/s system with on-off keying (OOK) modulation format is implemented by using optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) method. As modifications of this system, simultaneous multicolor optical signal generation and 100 Gb/s return-to-zero (RZ)-to-non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format conversion are presented. We also demonstrate basic all-optical signal processing functions of 100 GHz clock recovery and 100 Gb/s all-optical 2R generation based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs).

Abstract:The Faster-Than-Nyquist(FTN)signaling-based scheme is a high spectral efficiency transmission scheme for largecapacity optical communication systems.This paper reviews the latest FTN signaling-based transmission schemes in the world,such as cascaded multi-modulus blind equalization FTN,digital FTN and Soft Output FTN(SOFTN).The cascaded multimodulus blind equalization FTN can effectively suppress noise and inter-channel crosstalk,the digital FTN can effectively simplify the system structure and the SOFTN has the highest spectral efficiency.It analyzes and compares in detail their performances and principles,which can be used as the basis for the design of future long-range large-capacity fiber-optic communication systems.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) for high spectrum efficiency transmission system are investigated in both long-haul and short haul optical networks. For long-haul transmission, two different super-Nyquist WDM systems based on advanced post (receiver side) and pre (transmitter side) DSP are demonstrated and studied. A novel DSP scheme for this optical super-Nyquist filtering 9-QAM like signals based on multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) without post filter are proposed and experimentally demonstrated, which directly recovers the Nyquist filtered QPSK to a 9-QAM like signal. This improved filtering tolerance and transmission performance are demonstrated in an 8-channel 112-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) experiment with a 25GHz-grid over 2640-km single-mode fiber (SMF). Alternatively, a novel digital super-Nyquist signal generation scheme is proposed to further suppress the Nyquist signal bandwidth and reduce the channel crosstalk without using optical pre-filtering and using. Only optical couplers are needed for super-Nyquist WDM multiplexing. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit 10 channel 32-GBaud (128-Gb/s) PDM-9-QAM signals within 25-GHz grid over 2975-km at a net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz (after excluding the 20% soft-decision FEC overhead). We extend the DSP for short haul optical transmission networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high speed CAP-64QAM system using direct modulation laser (DML) based on direct detection and digital equalizations. Decision-directed least mean squares (DD-LMS) are used to equalize the CAP-64QAM. Using this scheme, we successfully generate and transmit up to a record 60-Gb/s CAP-64QAM over 20-km stand single-mode fiber (SSMF) based on the DML and direct detection.

Abstract:A flexible optical NRZ-to-RZ format converter based on a time lens followed by optical filtering is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. After frequency chirp linearization, 9-tone ultra-flat optical frequency comb of 25-GHz frequency spacing within 1dB power variation is obtained. By changing the shape of the following optical band-pass filter, 3.4-ps Nyquist-shaped RZ signal and 3.7-ps Gaussian-shaped RZ signal are both achieved. The sensitivity improvements at a bit error rate of 10−9 are 3.3dB and 1.7dB, respectively.
