Abstract:Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling has been recognized as a promising technique for next-generation high data rate communications. By intentionally reducing the symbol interval, FTN signaling is capable of transmitting more symbols than classic Nyquist signaling within the same time period and bandwidth. However, the intentional non-orthogonality of the bandlimited signaling pulses imposes severe inter-symbol interference (ISI), which requires powerful equalization at the receiver. Hence, we embark on the comparison of time- and frequency-domain equalization for FTN signaling both by theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. It is shown that frequency-domain equalization fails to reliably detect the FTN signal with a low FTN packing factor, while the time-domain equalization still performs well.

Abstract:Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signal achieves higher spectral efficiency and capacity compared to Nyquist signal due to its smaller pulse interval or narrower subcarrier spacing. Shannon limit typically defines the upper-limit capacity of Nyquist signal. To the best of our knowledge, the mathematical expression for the capacity limit of FTN non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (NOFDM) signal is first demonstrated in this paper. The mathematical expression shows that FTN NOFDM signal has the potential to achieve a higher capacity limit compared to Nyquist signal. In this paper, we demonstrate the principle of FTN NOFDM by taking fractional cosine transform-based NOFDM (FrCT-NOFDM) for instance. FrCT-NOFDM is first proposed and implemented by both simulation and experiment. When the bandwidth compression factor $\alpha$ is set to $0.8$ in FrCT-NOFDM, the subcarrier spacing is equal to $40\%$ of the symbol rate per subcarrier, thus the transmission rate is about $25\%$ faster than Nyquist rate. FTN NOFDM with higher capacity would be promising in the future communication systems, especially in the bandwidth-limited applications.

Abstract:Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling with linear precoding is investigated as a potential technique to transcend digital video broadcasting-satellite-second generation extension (DVB-S2X). Combining cyclic prefix (CP), cyclic suffix (CS) and discrete Fourier transform (DFT) with existing linear precoding algorithms, such as G-to-minus-half (GTMH) precoding (GTMHP), the CPS-GTMH-DFTP algorithm is proposed to eliminate inter-symbol interference (ISI) for FTN signaling. By comparison with most existing algorithms, our proposed CPS-GTMH-DFTP algorithm requires much lower implementation complexity. Specifically, only two multipliers and the corresponding fast Fourier transform (FFT)/inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) operations are required with the proposed CPS-GTMH-DFTP algorithm, which makes our proposed algorithm more suitable for practical implementation. Furthermore, the CPS-GTMH-DFTP algorithm has better bit error rate (BER) performance than most existing precoding algorithms. Simulation results show that even when the time acceleration parameter and roll-off factor equal to 0.75 and 0.35 respectively, our proposed CPS-GTMH-DFTP algorithm can still approach the BER performance of the ISI-free Nyquist signaling for all the modulation types adopted in DVB-S2X. More precisely, with 256-amplitude phase shift keying (APSK), the BER performance degradation is almost 0.03 and 0.01 dB in uncoded and coded FTN systems respectively. As far as we know, with regard to low complexity ISI elimination algorithms for FTN signaling, this is the first time to achieve such excellent performance with a time acceleration parameter 0.75 and a practical roll-off factor 0.35.

Abstract:The Faster-Than-Nyquist(FTN)signaling-based scheme is a high spectral efficiency transmission scheme for largecapacity optical communication systems.This paper reviews the latest FTN signaling-based transmission schemes in the world,such as cascaded multi-modulus blind equalization FTN,digital FTN and Soft Output FTN(SOFTN).The cascaded multimodulus blind equalization FTN can effectively suppress noise and inter-channel crosstalk,the digital FTN can effectively simplify the system structure and the SOFTN has the highest spectral efficiency.It analyzes and compares in detail their performances and principles,which can be used as the basis for the design of future long-range large-capacity fiber-optic communication systems.
On Merits of Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling in the Finite Blocklength Regime

Abstract:We identify potential merits of faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling in the finite blocklength (FBL) regime. A unique aspect of FTN signaling is that it can increase the blocklength by packing more data symbols within the same time and frequency to yield strictly higher number of independent signaling dimensions than that of Nyquist rate signaling. Using the finite-blocklength information theory, we provide tight bounds on the maximum channel coding rate (MCCR) of FTN signaling for any finite time-bandwidth product. The merits are categorized into two operating regions of FTN, i.e., when the time-acceleration factor of FTN, $\tau$, is above or below a certain threshold $\tau_{0}$. When $\tau > \tau_{0}$, FTN has both higher channel capacity and MCCR than that of Nyquist rate signaling, when the utilized pulse shape is non-sinc. Since the issues associated with the ideal sinc pulse only get exacerbated when packets are short, the benefit of FTN becomes more significant in the FBL regime. On the other hand, when $\tau < \tau_{0}$, the channel capacity is fixed but MCCR of FTN can continue to increase to a certain degree, thereby reducing the gap between the capacity and MCCR. This benefit is present regardless of the utilized pulse shape, including the ideal sinc-pulse, and is unique to the FBL regime. Instead of increasing MCCR for fixed block error rates, FTN can alternatively lower the block error rates for fixed channel coding rates. These results imply that FTN can lower the penalty from limited channel coding over short blocklength and can improve the performance and reliability of short packet communications.

Enhanced Carrier Phase Recovery Using Dual Pilot Tones in Faster-than-Nyquist Optical Transmission Systems

Abstract:Compared with high spectrum efficiency faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) backbone network, an enhanced carrier phase recovery based on dual pilot tones is more sensitive to capital cost in FTN metropolitan areas as well as inter-datacenter optical networks. The use of distributed feedback (DFB) lasers is a way to effectively reduce the cost. However, under high symbol rate FTN systems, equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) induced by a DFB laser with large linewidth will significantly deteriorate the system performance. What is worse, in FTN systems, tight filtering introduces inter-symbol interference so severe that the carrier phase estimation (CPE) algorithm of the FTN systems is more sensitive to EEPN, thus it will lead to a more serious cycle slip problem. In this paper, an enhanced carrier phase recovery based on dual pilot tones is proposed to mitigate EEPN and suppress cycle slip, in which the chromatic dispersion (CD)-aware Tx and LO laser phase noise is estimated, respectively. Offline experiments results under 40 Gbaud polarization multiplexing (PM) 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) FTN wavelength division multiplexing (FTN-WDM) systems at 0.9 acceleration factor, 5 MHz laser linewidth, and 500 km transmission demonstrate that the proposed algorithm could bring about 0.65 dB improvement of the required SNR for the normalized generalized mutual information of 0.9 compared with the training sequence-based cycle slip suppression carrier phase estimation (TS-CSS) algorithm.

Abstract:Faster-than-Nyquist(FTN) is a promising technique due to higher spectral efficiency, but at a cost of introducing the inter-symbol interference (ISI) which usually requires the computationally demanding detection algorithms. In order to reduce the detection complexity at the receiver, in this paper, a novel Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) scheme is proposed for FTN system. In the conventional THP (CTHP) scheme, the ISI introduced by time-packing can only be diminished from several preceding information symbols, which results in large residual ISI and an unattractive bit-error-rate (BER) performance. Moreover, due to the suboptimal receiver – a simple modulo operation which ignores the correlation between received symbols, CTHP faces obvious capacity loss and is ineffective to execute interference cancellation for FTNS. In this paper, residual ISI of FTNS in CTHP is formulated in detail and modeled mathematically. Further more, an improved THP method with an optimized receiver based on the soft interference cancelation (SIC) algorithm and iterative turbo process is proposed to combat residual ISI for FTNS. Computational complexity analysis and numerical simulation results show that the proposed scheme not only has inexpensive computational cost but also greatly outperforms CTHP and other cited schemes. Moreover, for moderate time-packing, it can approach the ISI-free BER performance boundary and is also competitive to the MAP equalization technique.

Duobinary Shaping and Phase Correction Algorithm for Faster-than-Nyquist Coherent Optical Transmission Systems

Abstract:The increasing shortage of spectrum resources makes researchers pay much attention to how to improve the spectral efficiency. Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) coherent optical transmission is one of the most promising techniques to improve the spectral efficiency achieved by duobinary shaping. In this work, a FTN coherent optical transmission system is constructed containing transmitting side and receiving side. On the transmitting side, signals are transmitted after QPSK or 16QAM modulation with duobinary shaping. On the receiving side, the laser phase noise is eliminated by a pilot aided blind phase search (BPS) algorithm. Then the duobinary-shaped 16QAM or QPSK signal is processed by the maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE). The constellation diagrams prove the effectiveness and convergence of the proposed algorithms. Moreover, the numerical results verify the relationship between the optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and the bit error rate (BER). Meanwhile, it is obvious that the FTN coherent optical transmission with duobinary shaping can improve the spectral efficiency effectively for signals of different modulation formats.
Low-Complexity Detection of M-ary PSK Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling

Abstract:Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling is a promising non-orthogonal physical layer transmission technique to improve the spectral efficiency of future communication systems but at the expense of intersymbol-interference (ISI). In this paper, we investigate the detection problem of FTN signaling and formulate the sequence estimation problem of any $M$-ary phase shift keying (PSK) FTN signaling as an optimization problem that turns out to be non-convex and nondeterministic polynomial time (NP)-hard to solve. We propose a novel algorithm, based on concepts from semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and Gaussian randomization, to detect any $M$-ary PSK FTN signaling in polynomial time complexity regardless of the constellation size $M$ or the ISI length. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm strikes a balance between the achieved performance and the computational complexity. Additionally, results show the merits of the proposed algorithm in improving the spectral efficiency when compared to Nyquist signaling and the state-of-the-art schemes from the literature. In particular, when compared to Nyquist signaling at the same error rate and signal-to-noise ratio, our scheme provides around $17\%$ increase in the spectral efficiency at a roll-off factor of 0.3.

Pilot Design and Doubly-Selective Channel Estimation for Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling

Abstract:Being capable of enhancing the spectral efficiency (SE), faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling is a promising approach for wireless communication systems. This paper investigates the doubly-selective (i.e., time- and frequency-selective) channel estimation and data detection of FTN signaling. We consider the intersymbol interference (ISI) resulting from both the FTN signaling and the frequency-selective channel and adopt an efficient frame structure with reduced overhead. We propose a novel channel estimation technique of FTN signaling based on the least sum of squared errors (LSSE) approach to estimate the complex channel coefficients at the pilot locations within the frame. In particular, we find the optimal pilot sequence that minimizes the mean square error (MSE) of the channel estimation. To address the time-selective nature of the channel, we use a low-complexity linear interpolation to track the complex channel coefficients at the data symbols locations within the frame. To detect the data symbols of FTN signaling, we adopt a turbo equalization technique based on a linear soft-input soft-output (SISO) minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalizer. Simulation results show that the MSE of the proposed FTN signaling channel estimation employing the designed optimal pilot sequence is lower than its counterpart designed for conventional Nyquist transmission. The bit error rate (BER) of the FTN signaling employing the proposed optimal pilot sequence shows improvement compared to the FTN signaling employing the conventional Nyquist pilot sequence. Additionally, for the same SE, the proposed FTN signaling channel estimation employing the designed optimal pilot sequence shows better performance when compared to competing techniques from the literature.

Sphere Decoder with Box Optimization for FTN Non-orthogonal FDM System

Abstract:In 1975, the pioneering work of J. E. Mazo showed the potential faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) gain of single-carrier binary signal. If the inter-symbol interference is eliminated by an optimal detector, the FTN single-carrier binary signal can transmit 24.7% more bits than the Nyquist signal without any loss of bit error rate performance, which is known as the Mazo limit. In this paper, we apply sphere decoder (SD) with box optimization (BO) to reduce inter-carrier interference (ICI) in FTN non-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (FTN-NOFDM) system. Compared with the conventional SD, SD with BO can achieve the same performance to reduce ICI, but its average number of expanded nodes in search process is significantly decreased especially for high-order modulation format, which can reduce the complexity of the receiver. When the bandwidth compression factor $\alpha$ is set to 0.802, the transmission rate of QPSK-modulated FTN-NOFDM is 24.7% faster than the Nyquist rate, and it has almost the same performance as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), which agrees well with the Mazo limit. The QPSK-modulated FTN-NOFDM with $\alpha$ equal to 0.5 (the spectral efficiency is 4 bit/s/Hz) outperforms 16QAM-modulated OFDM by about 1.5 dB. The 16QAM-modulated FTN-NOFDM with $\alpha$ equal to 0.67 and 0.5 (the spectral efficiency is 6 bit/s/Hz and 8 bit/s/Hz, respectively) outperforms 64QAM-modulated and 256QAM-modulated OFDM by about 1.5 dB and 2 dB, respectively. Therefore, FTN-NOFDM will be a promising modulation scheme for the future bandwidth-limited wireless communications.

Abstract:A precoded orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation scheme relying on faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) transmission over doubly selective fading channels is {proposed}, which enhances the spectral efficiency and improves the Doppler resilience. We derive the input-output relationship of the FTN signaling in the delay-Doppler domain. Eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) is used for eliminating both the effects of inter-symbol interference and correlated additive noise encountered in the delay-Doppler domain to enable efficient symbol-by-symbol demodulation. Furthermore, the power allocation coefficients of individual frames are optimized for maximizing the mutual information under the constraint of the derived total transmit power. Our performance results demonstrate that the proposed FTN-based OTFS scheme can enhance the information rate while achieving a comparable BER performance to that of its conventional Nyquist-based OTFS counterpart that employs the same root-raised-cosine shaping filter.

Low-Complexity Detection for FTN Signaling Based on Weighted FG-SS-BP Equalization Method

Abstract:In this paper, a low-complexity turbo detection scheme based on a weighted factor graph (FG) serial-schedule (SS) belief propagation (BP) equalization method is proposed for Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling. The iterative equalization method is applied to mitigate the severe intersymbol interference (ISI) introduced by FTN signaling. In order to reduce the complexity of the equalization method, Gaussian approximation (GA) is used to calculate the log-likelihood ratio (LLR). Thus, the computational complexity is merely linear with the number of ISI taps. Furthermore, LDPC, as an efficient coding technique, results in performance that approaches the Shannon limit in this turbo detection scheme. The simulation results show that the proposed weighted FG-SS-BP-based turbo detection method performs close to the optimal detector under ISI-free conditions with very low complexity.
Frequency Reshaping And Compensation Scheme Based On Deep Neural Network For A Ftn Cap 9qam Signal In Visible Light Communication System

Abstract:We have proposed a frequency reshaping and compensation scheme for FTN (Faster-Than-Nyquist) CAP (Carrierless Amplitude and Phase modulation) signal based on machine learning for the first time in this paper. The cascaded post equalizer consists of 2 stages. The first stage digital signal processing (DSP) is a Deep Neural Network (DNN), then LMS post-equalization is conducted as the second stage offline DSP. Through this method, we successfully demonstrated a data rate of 1.12Gbit/s FTN CAP 9QAM modulation over 1meter free space transmission with bit error rate (BER) below 7% FEC threshold of 3.8x10(-3). Compared to the traditional FTN CAP modulation without DNN, the proposed method would increase the data rate by approximately 100 Mbps, leading to an improvement of system capacity of 9.8%. The experimental results clearly validate the proposed cascaded two stage DNN-LMS (C2S DNN-LMS) can be a promising solution for future high speed VLC system.
A Hybrid BP-EP-VMP Approach to Joint Channel Estimation and Decoding for FTN Signaling over Frequency Selective Fading Channels

Abstract:This paper deals with low-complexity joint channel estimation and decoding for faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling over frequency selective fading channels. The inter-symbol interference (ISI) imposed by FTN signaling and the frequency selective channel are intentionally separated to fully exploit the known structure of the FTN-induced ISI. Colored noise due to the faster sampling rate than that of the Nyquist signaling system is approximated by autoregressive process. A Forney style factor graph representation of the FTN system is developed and Gaussian message passing is performed on the graph. Expectation propagation (EP) is employed to approximate the message from channel decoder to Gaussian distribution. Since the inner product between FTN symbols and channel coefficients is infeasible by belief propagation (BP), we propose to perform variational message passing (VMP) on an equivalent soft node in factor graph to tackle this problem. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed low-complexity hybrid BP-EP-VMP algorithm outperforms the existing methods in FTN system. Compared with the Nyquist counterpart, FTN signaling with the proposed algorithm is able to increase the transmission rate by over 40%, with only negligible BER performance loss.

Abstract:The spectrally efficient multicarrier faster-than-Nyquist (MFTN) signaling provides an efficient and robust solution for enhancing transmission rate and resisting channel impairments. In this paper, an evolutionary non-orthogonal physical waveform is proposed for simultaneously achieving high spectral and energy efficiency via combining MFTN signaling with index modulation (IM). Exploiting the implicit transmission of IM, the inactivated subcarriers alleviate the inherent two-dimensional interferences imposed by time-frequency packing in MFTN. Then, we develop a pair of iterative equalization algorithms based on vector approximate message passing (VAMP). For the first time-domain equalization (TDE), an extended constellation set is constructed for uniformly characterizing the activated and inactivated subcarriers. To further reducing the computational complexity, we establish a subcarrier-based segment-wise frequency-domain received signal model and accordingly develop low-complexity VAMP-based frequency-domain equalization (FDE) combined with interference elimination. Corroborated by simulations, the novel MFTN-IM waveform achieves superior bit error rate (BER) performance over benchmark waveforms in the high signal noise ratio (SNR) regions. Interestingly, while the proposed VAMP-TDE outperforms the proposed VAMP-FDE in BER performance, the latter is more competitive in balancing demodulation performance and computational complexity.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of bandwidth, a higher capacity communication system is required for optical short link and access network. Intensity modulationdirect detection (IM-DD) is considered as a reasonable method in access network, due to its low cost and power consumption. However, it reduces the spectral efficiency compared with IQ modulation. In addition, single-sideband (SSB) signal occupies less bandwidth than double-sideband signal (DSB). However, SSB systems suffer from signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) from photodiodes (PDs). Recently, KramersKronig (KK) receiver is proposed to mitigate SSBI. Meanwhile, single-sideband (SSB) signal is the prerequisite for KK scheme, and this kind of signal is also tolerant to fiber chromatic dispersion and multipath-fading. On the other hand, free-space optical (FSO) communication is becoming a promising candidate for next generation optical access network. Thus we experimentally demonstrate the KK scheme in 20km SSMF and 20m FSO links with both single carrier signal and multicarrier signal. We compare the performance between them with and without pre-equalization (pre-EQ). With the help of probabilistically shaped (PS) mapping to gives an increase in the sensitivity over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). We reach a 117bits transmission with a spectral efficiency of 5.85bitsHz of 20Ghz bandwidth with single modulator and single photodiode (PD) in fiber-FSO system.

Abstract:We propose and numerically investigate a novel high-speed (40-Gb/s and above) optical frequency shift-keying (FSK) transmitter scheme. By optical carrier-suppressed modulation and differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) to intensity modulation (IM) conversion, only one light source is needed in the proposed scheme to generate high-speed optical FSK signals. By using a Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM) as phase modulator and an additional delay interferometer (DI) cascaded after the carrier-suppressed MZM to suppress the remaining carrier, the performance of our scheme can compete with the double-light-source counterparts. The transmission performances of the FSK signal generated with the proposed scheme as well as detuning and bandwidth tolerance of the demodulation filter are also carefully investigated. Simulation results show that the proposed FSK generation scheme is very suitable for the next-generation optical access network and optical label switching network. A potential application of our scheme in high-speed passive optical network is proposed.
