Abstract:Graphene is an atomically thin, two-dimensional allotrope of carbon with excellent chemical, mechanical, and electronic properties. Recent studies have revealed that using graphene or modified graphene as a catalyst support or metal-free catalyst can result in significant improvement in the catalytic activity, selectivity, reusability and tolerance due to the unique structure of graphene. This review summarized the recent progress on the pre-paration of the graphene-based catalysts and their application in traditional chemical reactions, electrochemical reactions and photochemical catalysis. The perspectives of achieving graphene-based catalysts with high catalytic performance have also been included.

Abstract:The creation of specific catalytic functionalities in the nanocarbon materials is an important approach to develop the metal-free nanocarbon materials (carbocatalysts). We report herein a functionalization strategy by treatment of N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) with ozone/water to create oxygen groups nearby the N groups (N-C=O). These groups, different from those present in conventionally oxidized NCNT, show peculiar catalytic behavior. The N atom adjacent to carbonyl group (N-C=O) modifies the reactivity of carbonyl towards C-H activation and simultaneously activate O-2 molecule for bifunctionality. Efficient performance for oxidative coupling of benzylamine to imine (>99% imine selectivity) can be obtained under solvent-free conditions at ambient pressure. The benzylamine productivity reaches as high as 131.3 mmol m(-2) h(-1), which is the highest among any other reported carbon-based catalysts. This work not only highlights a sustainable strategy for tuned surface chemistry of carbon materials by using mild ozonation process, but also reports a novel green aerobic synthesis method of benzylamine using tailored metal-free carbon nanomaterials. Abstract:Although carbon has been widely used in catalytic processes as a support material, very little is known about its function as an active catalyst. The scientific challenge is to achieve a detailed mechanistic understanding of the structural or chemical sites of the carbon that are catalytically active especially because of the very heterogeneous nature of carbon surfaces. This problem is complicated by the fact that there are limited tools to characterize the surface chemical and structural properties of carbon materials. This review highlights recent efforts from our group in utilizing well-defined synthetic nanostructure carbons in which surface properties can be controlled and systematically varied in order to identify their function for oxidative dehydrogenation reactions. Manipulation of exposed edge sites and oxygen functionalities are some of the aspects studied for controlling activity and selectivity on carbon catalysis.

Abstract:N-doped carbon materials represent a type of metal-free catalyst for diverse organic synthetic reactions. However, single N-doped carbon materials perform insufficiently in the selective oxidation reaction of C–H bond compared with metal catalysts or multielement co-doped materials. There are a few reports on the application of three-dimensional (3D) carbon materials in such a reaction. Besides, the relationship between the well-developed porous structures, heteroatom doping, and their catalytic performance is unclear. In this study, 3D porous N-doped graphene aerogel catalysts with high activity and selectivity for the C–H bond oxidation under mild reaction conditions have been synthesized through a two-step method. Systematic studies on the dosage of N sources, pyrolysis temperature, and their influences on the catalytic performances have been evolved. Abstract:Atomically thick two-dimensional materials have been increasingly attracting research interest not only due to their promising applications in a range of functional devices but also to their theoretical value to unraveling the catalytic electron transfer process within a simplified scenario. In this work, the monoatomic-thick dot-sized graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has been synthesized and intimately contacted to the basal plane of the graphene sheet to form the monolayer g-C3N4 dots@graphene (MTCG). The electrocatalytic activity of the MTCG in the oxygen reduction reaction is found to rival that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst in terms of the catalytic current density and half-wave potential. The density functional theory calculations confirm the catalytic improvement of the MTCG originates from a higher efficiency for the reduction of OOH-than that of the g-C3N4 alone; therefore, the current work is expected to provide new insights in developing next-generation, highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract:Graphene oxide, a two-dimensional aromatic scaffold decorated by oxygen-containing functional groups, possesses rich chemical properties and may present a green alternative to precious metal catalysts. Graphene oxide-based carbocatalysis has recently been demonstrated for aerobic oxidative reactions. However, its widespread application is hindered by the need for high catalyst loadings. Here we report a simple chemical treatment that can create and enlarge the defects in graphene oxide and impart on it enhanced catalytic activities for the oxidative coupling of amines to imines (up to 98% yield at 5 wt% catalyst loading, under solvent-free, open-air conditions). This study examines the origin of the enhanced catalytic activity, which can be linked to the synergistic effect of carboxylic acid groups and unpaired electrons at the edge defects. The discovery of a simple chemical processing step to synthesize highly active graphene oxide allows the premise of industrial-scale carbocatalysis to be explored.

Abstract:Coupling graphene-based materials with SiC nanostructures is one of the most feasible strategies to improve the photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. Here, we synthesized the vertical graphene (VG) sheets on the SiC nanowires achieved from rice husks to form the VG@SiC/C composite, in which the VG sheets possess high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, and chemical stability, and the SiC nanowires have a suitable bandgap for sunlight absorption. The resulting VG@SiC/C composite provides an enhanced photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO and CH4, yielding CO and CH4 evolution yields of 25.5 and 2.3 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively. The achieved CO yield is maximal so far among the SiC-based photocatalysts. The defective VG sheets promote the absorption of sunlight, enhance the CO2 adsorption and activation, increase the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, improve the activity of photocatalyst, and thereby prompt the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO with high yield and selectivity.

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of CO2 to value-added chemicals using renewable electricity provides a promising way to mitigate both global warming and the energy crisis. Here, a facile ion-adsorption strategy is reported to construct highly active graphene-based catalysts for CO2 reduction to CO. The isolated transition metal cyclam-like moieties formed upon ion adsorption are found to contribute to the observed improvements. Free from the conventional harsh pyrolysis and acid-leaching procedures, this solution-chemistry strategy is easy to scale up and of general applicability, thus paving a rational avenue for the design of high-efficiency catalysts for CO2 reduction and beyond.

Abstract:Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene (N,S-G) is activated using ZnCl2, KOH, and CO2 to develop different defects and functionalities. The modified carbo-catalysts are used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for phenol degradation. Compared with nitrogen-doped graphene (N-G), N,S-G exhibits better catalytic activity, and KOH activation further enhances the oxidation efficiency. Radical quenching experiments, electrochemical characterization, and electron paramagnetic resonance characterization reveal that N-G activates PMS via a nonradical pathway. The involvement of a secondary sulfur dopant will transform the reaction pathway into radical-dominated oxidation (SO4•–and •OH). KOH activation further promotes the generation of the two radical species and further involves superoxide ion radicals (O2•–), thus achieving deeper mineralization of the organic pollutants. Different from the nonradical species confined on the catalyst surface, radical oxidation (including the singlet oxygen (1O2) transformed from O2•–) occurs in bulk solution and protects the carbo-catalyst from corrosion, herein securing better structural integrity and stability of carbo-catalysts. Abstract:Oxidation of hydrocarbons with clean oxidants is a crucial process for the development of products ranging from commodity chemicals to speciality pharmaceuticals. While selective oxidation is commonplace in nature and mainly occurs through a broad variety of cytochrome P450 enzymes, the synthetic catalysts that have been identified so far are relatively inactive with aliphatic C H bonds. We present here a promising strategy for modifying polymeric graphitic carbon nitride by replacing the carbon atoms in the "melon" network using boron. B-11 solid-state MAS NMR and XPS spectral studies confirmed the incorporation of the boron atoms in the polymeric g-C3N4 as well as the degree of doping, while X-ray diffraction and IR indicated that the characteristic structural properties of polymeric g-C3N4, such as the original graphitic structure, and the C-N heterocycle units were essentially retained. The boron-doped polymeric carbon nitride shows promising catalytic activity and high selectivity (>= 87%) in the oxidation of benzylic aromatics. The use of this metal-free, organic, semiconducting polymer as an oxidation catalyst and H2O2 or O-2 as oxidants makes the reactions interesting from both an economic and environmental point of view. It is also hoped that our findings will stimulate further investigation and will open new possibilities to form hybrid carbon nitride materials with new and probably exciting applications.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions exacerbate the greenhouse effect, and electrocatalytic reduction CO 2 into value-added chemicals is regarded as a promising and effective method to cope with the issue. Silicon (Si) as a kind of metalloid element presents the features of non-metal and metal, potentially showing the advantages of metallic and non-metallic electrocatalysts simultaneously. By density functional theory (DFT), the screened SiN3 anchored graphene is selected to study the electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CRR) due to its good CO 2 capture ability, high stability and feature of the conductor. Along the reaction coordinate, the HCHO can be formed owing to the minimum energy barrier. Moreover, the SiN3 anchored graphene presents high catalytic selectivity toward CRR rather than the complete H 2 evolution reaction (HER). During the CRR procedures, the SiN3 ligand and C framework act as the electron translocator and electron reservoir respectively, which facilitate the CRR. This work provides a pathway to design highly effective metal-free CRR electrocatalysts and to achieve highly effective CRR.

Abstract:Single atom metal-nitrogen-carbon materials have emerged as remarkably potent catalysts, demonstrating unprecedented potential for the photo-driven reduction of CO2. Herein, a unique Cu@g-C3N5 catalyst obtained by cooperation of single atom Cu and nitrogen-rich g-C3N5 is proposed. The particular CuN diatomic active sites (DAS) in Cu@g-C3N5 contribute to the formation of highly stable CuOCN adsorption, a key configuration for CO2 activation and CC coupling. The synergistic diatomic active sites interaction is found responsible for the efficient photoreduction of CO2 to C2H4 which has been demonstrated in our Gibbs free energy calculation and COHP analysis. The CO2 activation mechanism was studied, the charge density difference and DOS analysis show that the low oxidation state Cu atom significantly affects the electronic structure of g-C3N5 and then enhance the catalytic activity of CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Nitrogen doped porous carbon cage materials are successfully synthesized using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Several carbides are selected as templates and in situ removed by CCl4. NaNO3 is then used to create porous structure, and a very large surface area (SSA) (1224 m2 g-1) could be obtained. The obtained materials can activate peroxymonsulfate (PMS) for degradation of various organic pollutants effectively. By NaNO3, the nitrogen doping styles could be regulated and the percentage of graphitic N and CO group could be increased, which will alter the PMS-based oxidation from a radical pathway to a non-radical dominated process. This study provides a novel way for synthesis of carbocatalysts, which should have great potential in environmental remediation.

Abstract:A SiC supported iron (Fe–SiC) catalyst was developed for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of carbon nanotubes. Using CO as the carbon source, sole Fe–SiC catalyst was mostly inactive for synthesizing carbon nanotubes and only trace amount of carbon deposits was produced. In contrast, the powder Fe–SiC catalyst could be activated by pressing them onto a flat SiO2 substrate or by mixing them with porous MgO powders. Particularly, efficient growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) was achieved on porous MgO promoted Fe–SiC catalyst, and predominant synthesis of (6, 5) SWNTs was realized at a reaction temperature of 650 °C. Systematic characterizations revealed that the reducibility of the Fe–SiC catalyst was enhanced by the physical contact with oxide support, which promotes the formation of small active Fe nanoparticles for the subsequent SWNT nucleation and growth. This work not only deepens our understandings to the catalyst activation mechanisms, but also helps design composite catalyst for synthesizing SWNTs.
