Abstract:The composite Ni/Al2O3-SiC catalyst was designed and synthesized for hydrogen production from propane partial oxidation. Through the composite of high thermal conductivity SiC and porous solid acid Al2O3, it improved the shortcoming of sintering and inactivation of high-temperature reaction for Ni-based catalysts. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 physical adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis etc. From the results, the SiC doped catalyst exhibited superior catalytic properties for hydrogen production by propane partial oxidation. By doping SiC with high thermal conductivity to Al2O3 support, the catalyst was improved for sintering and carbon deposition resistance and reducing the aggregation of Ni active sites reflected by improving the stability of hydrogen production.

Abstract:Sulfur-modified carbon support can effectively modulate the performance of the metal catalyst. Here we prepared a sulfur-doped mesoporous carbon material (CSx) through carbonization of poly(sodium p-styrenesulfonate or p-styrenesulfonate co-maleate), which was supported with Pd and employed for the selective hydrogenation of o-chloro-nitrobenzene (o-CNB) to o-chloro-aniline (o-CAN). Such catalyst shows almost 100% selectivity of o-CAN at 100% o-CNB conversion (performed In a batch reactor: t = 210 min, No-CNB/m(cat) = 0.63 mol/g(cat)). The stability (recyclability) study of the optimal catalyst shows that the catalyst can be reused for at least six times without decreasing the selectivity (100% conversion can be achieved with slightly prolonged reaction time). We suggest that the electronic effect between the S and Pd, which reduces the hydrogen adsorption and dissociation ability of Pd, to be responsible for the excellent selectivity, and the formation of C-S covalent bond to be responsible for the good stability.

Abstract:Oxidation of hydrocarbons with clean oxidants is a crucial process for the development of products ranging from commodity chemicals to speciality pharmaceuticals. While selective oxidation is commonplace in nature and mainly occurs through a broad variety of cytochrome P450 enzymes, the synthetic catalysts that have been identified so far are relatively inactive with aliphatic C H bonds. We present here a promising strategy for modifying polymeric graphitic carbon nitride by replacing the carbon atoms in the "melon" network using boron. B-11 solid-state MAS NMR and XPS spectral studies confirmed the incorporation of the boron atoms in the polymeric g-C3N4 as well as the degree of doping, while X-ray diffraction and IR indicated that the characteristic structural properties of polymeric g-C3N4, such as the original graphitic structure, and the C-N heterocycle units were essentially retained. The boron-doped polymeric carbon nitride shows promising catalytic activity and high selectivity (>= 87%) in the oxidation of benzylic aromatics. The use of this metal-free, organic, semiconducting polymer as an oxidation catalyst and H2O2 or O-2 as oxidants makes the reactions interesting from both an economic and environmental point of view. It is also hoped that our findings will stimulate further investigation and will open new possibilities to form hybrid carbon nitride materials with new and probably exciting applications.
Synergistic Effect of N-Doped sp 2 Carbon and Porous Structure in Graphene Gels toward Selective Oxidation of C–H Bond

Abstract:N-doped carbon materials represent a type of metal-free catalyst for diverse organic synthetic reactions. However, single N-doped carbon materials perform insufficiently in the selective oxidation reaction of C–H bond compared with metal catalysts or multielement co-doped materials. There are a few reports on the application of three-dimensional (3D) carbon materials in such a reaction. Besides, the relationship between the well-developed porous structures, heteroatom doping, and their catalytic performance is unclear. In this study, 3D porous N-doped graphene aerogel catalysts with high activity and selectivity for the C–H bond oxidation under mild reaction conditions have been synthesized through a two-step method. Systematic studies on the dosage of N sources, pyrolysis temperature, and their influences on the catalytic performances have been evolved. Abstract:Graphene sheet/polymeric carbon nitride nanocomposite (GSCN) functions as a metal-free catalyst to activate O-2 for the selective oxidation of secondary C-H bonds of cyclohexane. By fine-tuning the weight ratio of graphene and carbon nitride components, GSCN offers good conversion and high selectivity to corresponding ketones. Besides its high stability, this catalyst also exhibits high chemoselectivity for secondary C-H bonds of various saturated alkanes and, therefore, should be useful in overcoming challenges confronted by metal-mediated catalysis.

Abstract:Although precious transition metals such as palladium, platinum, and iridium are widely used in hydrogenation reactions, the earth-abundant transition metal-catalyzed highly selective semi-hydrogenation of terminal alkynes to terminal alkenes remains poorly developed and a challenge. Herein we demonstrate the excellent selective, cost-effective semi-hydrogenation of terminal alkynes via a novel graphene encapsulated Ni@N/C catalyst. The graphene layer encapsulated nano-catalyst Ni@N/C could significantly avoid metal leaching and improve the stability of the catalyst. The strong interaction of nitrogen with the Ni nanoparticles regulates the activity of Ni towards selective semi-hydrogenation of terminal alkynes. Substrates having un-functionalized as well as functionalized substituents, and substrates having sensitive functional groups (olefins, ketones) which pose a challenge to hydrogenate, were semi-hydrogenated with excellent conversion (up to 99%) and selectivity (up to 99%) under optimized reaction conditions.

Abstract:A facile protocol for producing porous carbon spheres co-doped with nitrogen and sulfur is presented. Thiourea resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) copolymerized resin microspheres were used as precursors. After only a simple calcination, the uniformly N, S co-doped graphitized carbon spheres could be obtained. Synergistic effects produced by the tunable content of N, S heteroatoms combined with the porous graphitized structures makes this one of the excellent non-platinum-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. When used in alkaline media, the materials exhibit high onset and half-wave potentials, high kinetic current density and a four-electron transfer pathway with low hydrogen peroxide yield, which is comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst. More importantly, the long-term durability test confirms its excellent stability for practical applications.

Abstract:Cobalt super-microparticles anchored on nitrogen-doped graphene (Co–NG) were prepared using an inexpensive method and were tested for heterogeneous oxidation of aniline with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in aqueous solutions. The crystal structure, morphology, and textural properties of Co–NG hybrids were investigated by various characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electron paramagnetic resonance and classical quenching tests were conducted to investigate the mechanism of PMS activation and aniline oxidation. The catalyst Co–NG exhibits an unexpectedly high catalytic activity in the degradation of aniline in water by advanced oxidation technology based on sulfate radicals (SO4−), and 100% decomposition can be achieved in 10min. This paper offers new insights on heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Heteroatom-doped meso/micro-porous carbon materials are conventionally produced by harsh carbonization under an inert atmosphere involving specific precursors, hard/soft templates, and heteroatom-containing agents. Herein, we report a facile synthesis of N and O co-doped meso/micro-porous carbon (NOMC) by template-free carbonization of a small-molecule precursor in a semi-closed system. The semi-closed carbonizaiton process yields hydrophilic NOMCs with large surface area in a high yield. The porous structure as well as the elemental composition of NOMCs can be modulated by changing the holding time at a particular temperature. NOMCs as metal-free heterogeneous catalysts can selectively oxidize benzyl alcohol and its derivatives into aldehydes/ketones with > 85% conversion in aqueous solution, which is much higher than that of the control sample obtained in tube furnace (21% conversion), mainly due to their high N conent, high percentage of pyridinic N, and large surface area. The presence of O-containing moieties also helps to improve the hydrophilicity and dispersion ability of catalysts and thus facilitates the mass transfer process during aqueous oxidation. The NOMC catalysts also dispayed excellent activity for a wide range of substrates with a selectivity of >99%.

Abstract:H2S selective catalytic oxidation, regarded as a green purification technology, has attracted much attention due to its ability to convert H2S to elemental S directly without thermodynamic limitation. Herein, we report for the first time that Co nanoparticles (NPs) with different Co content were encapsulated by N-doped graphitic carbon (3–5 layers) for H2S selective oxidation. The catalytic performance of catalysts increases at first and then decreases by increasing the content of Co. It is found that with a suitable Co content shows an optimal H2S conversion ratio of nearly 100% with the weight hourly space velocity of 18000 mL g−1 h−1 at 190 °C for 28 h. This high performance may be due to optimal mesopore size and abundant pyridinic N. In contrast, NC sample without Co has conversed nearly 95% of H2S at 250 °C. The theoretical calculation indicates that N-doped graphene can regulate the electron density around the Co NPs, which promotes the adsorption of H2S. We believe that the unique electronic and geometrical configurations improve the activity and stability. Our finding provides a new reference for the study of H2S selective oxidation.

Abstract:An important goal for nanocatalysis is the development of flexible and efficient methods for preparing active and stable core-shell catalysts. In this respect, we present the synthesis and characterization of iron oxides surrounded by nitrogen-doped-graphene shells immobilized on carbon support (labeled FeOx@NGr-C). Active catalytic materials are obtained in a simple, scalable and two-step method via pyrolysis of iron acetate and phenanthroline and subsequent selective leaching. The optimized FeOx@NGr-C catalyst showed high activity in oxidative dehydrogenations of several N-heterocycles. The utility of this benign methodology is demonstrated by the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant quinolines. In addition, mechanistic studies prove that the reaction progresses via superoxide radical anions (·O2(-)).

Abstract:Doping with pyridinic nitrogen atoms is known as an effective strategy to improve the activity of carbon-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. However, pyridinic nitrogen atoms prefer to occupy at the edge or defect sites of carbon materials. Here, a carbon framework named as hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne provides a suitable carbon matrix for pyridinic nitrogen doping. In hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne, three of the carbon atoms in a benzene ring are bonded to hydrogen and serve as active sites, like the edge or defect positions of conventional carbon materials, on which pyridinic nitrogen can be selectively doped. The as-synthesized pyridinic nitrogen-doped hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne shows much better electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction than that of the commercial platinum-based catalyst in alkaline media and comparable activity in acidic media. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the pyridinic nitrogen-doped hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne is more effective than pyridinic nitrogen-doped graphene for oxygen reduction.

Abstract:Nitrogen‐doped porous carbon nanocubes with a high surface area synthesized by carbonizing Prussian blue nanocubes coated with poly(fururyl alcohol) were used to support Pt nanoparticles as an electrocatalyst for the oxidation of methanol. The resulting catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity and electrochemical stability, owning to its high surface area, a uniform dispersion of Pt particles, and enhanced interaction between the particles and the support.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of ethylbenzene to acetophenne is an important process in both organic synthesis and fine chemicals diligence. The cobalt-based catalysts combined with nitrogen-doped carbon have received great attention in ethylbenzene (EB) oxidation. Here, a series of cobalt catalysts with metallic cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) encapsulated in nitrogen-doped graphite-like carbon shells (Co@NC) have been constructed through the one-pot pyrolysis method in the presence of different nitrogen-containing compounds (urea, dicyandiamide and melamine), and their catalytic performance in solvent-free oxidation of EB with tert-butyl hydrogen peroxide (TBHP) as an oxidant was investigated. Under optimized conditions, the UCo@NC (urea as nitrogen source) could afford 95.2% conversion of EB and 96.0% selectivity to acetophenone, and the substrate scalability was remarkable. Kinetics show that UCo@NC contributes to EB oxidation with an apparent activation energy of 32.3 kJ/mol. The synergistic effect between metallic cobalt NPs and nitrogen-doped graphite-like carbon layers was obviously observed and, especially, the graphitic N species plays a key role during the oxidation reaction. The structure–performance relationship illustrated that EB oxidation was a free radical reaction through 1-phenylethanol as an intermediate, and the possible reaction mechanistic has been proposed.

Abstract:Zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have recently emerged as an ideal type of carbon precursors with abundant tailorability. In this work, a series of ZIF‐derived porous carbon catalysts have been prepared with encapsulation of bimetallic oxide nanoparticles via simple thermal treatment. The composition and structure of these catalysts were confirmed in detail by different characterization methods. The bimetallic oxide (Mn/Co, Fe/Co, and Cu/Co) nanoparticles were encapsulated in the nitrogen‐doped graphitized carbon matrix. Moreover, the hierarchically porous structure and carbon defects were successfully constructed in the carbon catalysts. Additionally, in the selective oxidation of saturated C–H bonds in alkyl arenes, the carbon catalysts demonstrate outstanding performance for the oxidation of C–H bonds to corresponding carboxyl groups. This was due to their unique structure can greatly promote mass transfer and molecular oxygen activation, resulting in high conversion and high selectivity. Remarkably, this work here could also provide a novel strategy to the controllable synthesis of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)‐derived carbon catalysts for enhanced performance in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The transfer of catalytic function from molybdenum carbide to N-doped carbon has been tested by encapsulating molybdenum carbide with N-doped carbon using a one-pot preparation process.
