Abstract:Next generation: Editorial Board Co-Chair Jian Pei, together with the other Editorial Board members from China, reflects on the interdisciplinary future of organic chemistry and how the young Chinese researchers featured in this issue are making that future reality. As one of the basic subjects of chemistry, organic chemistry is of significant importance at the forefront of creating new matter. As organic chemistry develops in breadth and depth, in addition to pure chemical synthesis, organic chemistry is comprehensively correlated with other research areas. Great efforts have been devoted to the interdisciplinary research that brings organic chemistry together with life science, materials science, medicine, energy storage, and organic electronics. The precise synthesis provides a library of molecular probes for the investigation of biological processes and mechanisms of drug action. Development of new synthetic methodologies and their application in the total synthesis of natural products have especially shown the charm of organic chemistry. More efficient and green synthetic methods have also rapidly diversified the organic materials, which facilitates the development of organic electronics towards light, flexible, low-cost and intelligent electronic products that greatly change our life. China is growing to become a leader in fundamental research. Organic chemistry in China, in particular, has seen rapid development in the past few decades. The boundary between organic chemistry and other chemistry branches is turning more unclear. National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has funded innovation to encourage the emergence of new interdisciplinary and cutting-edge research areas. So far, a number of young scientists have dedicated themselves to exploiting organic chemistry in other research areas, which represents a future direction for the development of organic chemistry, especially in China. This special issue highlights the excellent work from some of the early career researchers in China, which cover a broad variety of frontiers of organic chemistry, including metal catalytic organic reactions for the efficient construction of special or ring substrates, DFT study of metal-catalyzed reaction mechanisms, synthesis of small molecules or polymers which are applied as fluorescent probes in living cells or electronic materials in organic solar cells and organic field-effect transistors. Finally, we would like to sincerely thank all the authors for submitting their excellent work, and we truly hope this special issue can provide inspiration to researchers for further creative investigations in organic chemistry.

Abstract:Information and energy related technologies with their huge market potential are a key for the future of our societies.For electronic and optoelectronic devices, e.g., LC(D) or LED based displays and light sources, photovoltaic cells, or sensing devices, there is always tough competition between organic and inorganic materials based systems.Organic materials, however, often show advantages over inorganic materials, such as silicon or II-VI semiconductors, due to their tremendous structural flexibility, the availability of low-cost processing schemes, and the possibility to create (semi)transparent and/or flexible devices.Moreover, a view on the young history of organic electronics shows a rapid increase in device performance and extraordinary technological achievements.One of the ongoing challenges for materials scientists in academia and industry nowadays is the development of novel high-performing and stable organic materials.

Abstract:Abstract Materials are addressed as possible enablers for solutions to many global societal challenges. A foresight exercise has been conducted to identify research paths to design, with a new approach, a generation of materials which can provide multi-functionalities. These material systems have been named “stem”, in analogy to living cells where a base of primitive units can be designed and assembled for self-reacting to external inputs. These materials will embed a concept of “internet in things”, where their processing capacity will enable the systems to interact with the environment and express diverse functionalities. Stem materials do not exist yet, but many clues from different theoretical and experimental results suggest they can be developed, and because living organisms exist. This article aims at launching this new approach and promoting the structuring of a multi-disciplinary community to fill the research gaps.

Abstract:Modern efforts to influence materials science with principles of biology have allowed fungal mycelial materials to take a foothold and develop novel solutions for the circular bioeconomy of tomorrow. However, recent studies have shown that the value of tomorrow’s green materials is not determined simply by their environmental viability, but rather by their ability to make the polluting materials of today obsolete. With an inherently strong structure of chitin and β-glucan, the ever-adaptable mycelia of fungi can compete at the highest levels with a litany of materials from leather to polyurethane foam to paper to wood. There are significant efforts to optimize pure mycelial materials (PMMs) through the entire process of species and strain selection, mycelial growth, and fabrication. Indeed, the promising investigations of novel species demonstrate how the diversity of fungi can be leveraged to create uniquely specialized materials. This review aims to highlight PMMs’ current trajectory, evaluate the successes in technology, and explore how these new materials can help shape a better tomorrow.

Abstract:In the past few decades, 2D layer materials have gradually become a central focus in materials science owing to their uniquely layered structural qualities and good optoelectronic properties. However, in the development of 2D materials, several disadvantages, such as limited types of materials and the inability to synthesize large-scale materials, severely confine their application. Therefore, further exploration of new materials and preparation methods is necessary to meet technological developmental needs. Organic molecular materials have the advantage of being customizable. Therefore, if organic molecular and 2D materials are combined, the resulting 2D organic materials would have excellent optical and electrical properties. In addition, through this combination, the free design and large-scale synthesis of 2D materials can be realized in principle. Furthermore, 2D organic materials exhibit excellent properties and unique functionalities along with great potential for developing sensors, biomedicine, and electronics. In this review, 2D organic materials are divided into five categories. The preparation methods and material properties of each class of materials are also described in detail. Notably, to comprehensively understand each material's advantages, the latest research applications for each material are presented in detail and summarized. Finally, the future development and application prospects of 2D organic materials are briefly discussed.

Thus they have attracted more and more attentions in recent years. In comparison with traditional inorganic micro- and nano-materials, organic micro- and nano-materials possesses some merits such as unlimited choice of building blocks, low-cost, ease for large-area fabrication, and they have been applied in organic field-effect transistors, organic photovoltaic solar cells and so on. In this paper, we summarizes recent development of organic micro- and nano-materials. Using the concept of supramolecular chemistry, we discusses molecule design strategy and growth mechanism of organic micro- and nano-materials, and their applications.

Abstract:Significant efforts have been devoted to the investigation of organic materials especially for optoelectronic applications. Compared with traditional bulk materials, organic micro/nanomaterials, a new member of organic material family, displayed interesting novel properties, which has attracted increasing attentions in recent years. Compared with other fabrication methods, solution process provides a more convenient and cost-effective approach to obtain organic micro/nanomaterials with various morphologies. In this chapter, we briefly introduce the basic fabrication methods of organic micro/nanostructures. Then we review recent progress on molecular design strategies, growth mechanisms and applications of organic micro/nanostructures.

Abstract:The launching integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) and materials genome engineering (MGE) has led the transformation of empirical and theoretical design paradigm into the rational computational one that further provides the basis for the data-driven design paradigm by integrating the high-throughput techniques in experiments and computations, the big data science with general principles, the informatics with knowledge discovery based on data mining and machine learning, and ultimately enabling the possibility of materials intelligence design (MID) via artificial intelligence. In this perspective article, we highlight the intelligent solution to acquire the property-structure-process-performance relationship of multilevel-structured materials by emphasizing modularization, automation, standardization, integration and intelligence, following the hierarchical relationship of data, information, knowledge and wisdom, which is essentially different from the past empirical, theoretical and computational paradigms. The new era of MID is expected to fundamentally reform the material innovation mode through an integrated infrastructure guided by novel concepts that is radically distinguished from the way of thinking and doing in the past, providing a perspective scientific vision and direction for future materials design.

Abstract:While conventional mechanics of materials offers a passive understanding of the mechanical properties of materials in existing forms, a paradigm shift, referred to as mechanomaterials, is emerging to enable the proactive programming of materials' properties and functionalities by leveraging force-geometry-property relationships. One of the foundations of this new paradigm is nanomechanics, which permits functional and structural materials to be designed based on principles from the nanoscale and beyond. Although the field of mechanomaterials is still in its infancy at the present time, we discuss the current progress in three specific directions closely linked to nanomechanics and provide perspectives on these research foci by considering the potential research directions, chances for success, and existing research capabilities. We believe this new research paradigm will provide future materials solutions for infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and environment.

Abstract:Neuromorphic computing and engineering has been the focus of intense research efforts that have been intensified recently by the mutation of Information and Communication Technologies. In fact, new computing solutions and new hardware platforms are expected to emerge to answer to the new needs and challenges of our societies. In this revolution, lots of candidates’ technologies are explored and will require leveraging of the pros and cons. In this perspective paper belonging to the special issue on neuromorphic engineering of Journal of Applied Physics, we focus on the current achievements in the field of organic electronics and the potentialities and specificities of this research field. We highlight how unique material features available through organic materials can be used to engineer useful and promising bio-inspired devices and circuits. We also discuss the opportunities that organic electronics offer for future research directions in the neuromorphic engineering field.

Abstract:Porous organic materials have garnered colossal interest with the scientific fraternity due to their excellent gas sorption performances, catalytic abilities, energy storage capacities, and other intriguing applications. This review encompasses the recent significant breakthroughs and the conventional functions and practices in the field of porous organic materials to find useful applications and imparts a comprehensive understanding of the strategic evolution of the design and synthetic approaches of porous organic materials with tunable characteristics. We present an exhaustive analysis of the design strategies with special emphasis on the topologies of crystalline and amorphous porous organic materials. In addition to elucidating the structure-function correlation and state-of-the-art applications of porous organic materials, we address the challenges and restrictions that prevent us from realizing porous organic materials with tailored structures and properties for useful applications.
